Tune into season 11, episode 6 of Beach Weekly as Lei Madrigal discusses new research on magic mushrooms, India's potential name change and more. The Parking and Transportation Services department at Long Beach State is updating its GPS tracking system for on-campus shuttles on the Ride Systems app to give passengers a more accurate live tracking of shuttles. New studies on psilocybin, commonly known as magic mushrooms, outline its benefits as an aid to psychological health. Based on these studies, the cities of San Francisco and Santa Cruz are taking steps toward the decriminalization of psilocybin. Similar studies show the health benefits of other types of mushrooms, such as lion's mane mushrooms, which can improve the brain's neuroplasticity and protect against dementia. LA Metro is prioritizing upgrading its public transportation in anticipation of the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. According to Southern California Public Radio, around 360,000 people are expected to attend the sporting events each day. Because of this large crowd, LA Metro is planning to extend the operation hours of buses and trains, increase easy-to-read signage, expand existing metro lines and more to make the city as convenient as possible for visitors. California Attorney General Rob Bonta is suing two anti-abortion groups under false advertising and unfair competition laws for wrongly promoting what they claim are “abortion pill reversals.” The groups, Heartbeat International and RealOptions, are being sued because they assure patients that the procedure of reversing a medication abortion is allegedly safe and effective. The owners of a Bronx daycare were charged with the murder of a 1-year-old child who is believed to have died from opioid exposure at the facility. Police uncovered huge amounts of narcotics, including fentanyl, underneath the floorboards of the daycare and drug paraphernalia stored near the children's napping area. The owner could face life in prison if ruled guilty on federal charges of narcotics possession and conspiracy. She also faces state court charges of murder, manslaughter and assault. India's name may change to Bharat, the Hindi word for India. The prime minister wants to change the name in an effort to fully embrace Hinduism, which is the country's most popular religion. Parliamentary changes could change the official name, but the possibility faces a lot of controversy because 20% of the country does not practice Hinduism. A Bob Ross painting called “A Walk in the Woods” is listed for sale at $9.85 million by the owner of an artifact gallery in Minneapolis. The painting is from the first episode of Bob Ross's show “The Joy of Painting.” Host: Lei Madrigal Editor: Julia Goldman Producers: El Nicklin, Aidan Swanepoel Like, comment, and follow us on your favorite platform for more content! This brain trust of SETI experts was hosted in February of 2020, back when live, in-studio conversations happened, and discussions of alien artifacts and UAPs was fringe science. The discussion includes James Benford's strategy for finding ETI artifacts and a proposition for both passive and active observations by optical and radio listening, radar imaging and launching probes. A debate on the implications of our own technosignatures. And what if we find nothing? A profound result: suggesting that, perhaps, no ET intelligence has yet come to look at Earth, or perhaps other civilizations are simply not as curious as we, good at concealing their activities, or simply lost to deep time. Many of the topics covered have now become mainstream science! The Director of National Intelligence has just released the second Annual Report on Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon. NASA has commissioned an independent study on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) led by Professor Keating's friend and colleague, Former chair of Princeton's astrophysics department, and President of the Simons Foundation, David Spergel. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-to-set-up-independent-study-on-unidentified-anomalous-phenomena/ And of course, our friend, Harvard Astronomy Professor Avi Loeb's Galileo Project for the Systematic Scientific Search for Evidence of Extraterrestrial Technological Artifacts ( https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/galileo/home ). For education reporter Adolfo Guzman-Lopez of KPCC, Southern California Public Radio, life has been "an emotional roller coaster" since he was shot in the throat by police with a rubber bullet. The incident happened May 31 in Long Beach, where Guzman-Lopez was covering a protest against police brutality and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Guzman-Lopez shares insights on why protest stories are education stories, and why this is an opportunity for education journalists to tap their sources and bring their beat experience into play. How can journalists develop nuanced and in-depth stories on the underlying issues fueling the public outrage? What should higher education reporters be thinking about in covering both the protests and the continued fiscal fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic? And what are the opportunities and challenges for education journalists covering racial inequities in both communities and the schools that serve them?

They recommend podcasts with diverse, global perspectives: Coming Out Stories, Tell Them I Am and Historically Black. Coming Out Stories is hosted Emma Goswell and will take you to one the most important moments in many people’s lives. It will perch you on sofas in suburban sitting rooms, stand you in front of officials' desks, put you at the centre of a crowd in a noisy classroom, everywhere where these conversations have happened. A podcast by What Goes On Media. Tell Them I Am is about the small moments that define who we are and who we are not. The stories are universal. The voices are all Muslim. Host Misha Euceph opens a window into the lives of Tan France, Alia Shawkat, Ramy Youssef, Reza Aslan, Mercedes Iman Diamond and others. It is a production of Southern California Public Radio. Historically Black Objects hold history. They're evocative of stories stamped in time. As part of The Washington Post's coverage of the Smithsonian's new National Museum of African American History and Culture, people submitted dozens of objects that make up their own lived experiences of black history, creating a "people's museum" of personal objects, family photos and more. The Historically Black podcast brings those objects and their stories to life through interviews, archival sound and music. A podcast from APM Reports, a production of Minnesota Public Radio.

Mette McLoughlin is a HR executive who most recently served as the senior vice president of human resources and chief human resources officer at American Public Media Group (APMG). She was with APMG for over 14 years. In the executive role, she led the human resources strategy, planning and implementation including all D, E & I efforts for all the APMG companies—American Public Media, Minnesota Public Radio, and Southern California Public Radio. She was previously responsible for all programs and activities related to organizational culture and employee engagement, including performance communication programs, employee surveys, all compensation programs and learning and development opportunities for APMG staff. Prior to APMG, she worked for the Hazelden Foundation as well as Lutheran Social Service of MN in HR management roles with primary responsibility for compensation & benefits, performance communication, and payroll services. Mette and her family live in South Minneapolis. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Mette found her way into the HR industry “by accident”, and how she integrates cultural competency into her work How doing diversity and inclusion work in public radio put Mette under more public scrutiny and pressure than usual How diversity issues have changed the “right” way to tell an authentic story and maximize the media’s reach Why Mette believes the media has a huge obligation and responsibility to be as neutral and objective as possible, despite the natural human bias Why the definition of “media” includes diverse information channels like movies and commercials, as well as traditional news How a change in reporting perspectives within the news media has helped push more extreme political views What Sara learned from the experience of working in HR for American Public Media during the Garrison Keillor #MeToo accusations Why Sara believes that the female-leaning HR field is in a difficult position during the era of #MeToo How the Garrison Keillor episode helped make people feel empowered to come forward with their own experiences What advice Mette would share with people new to diversity and inclusion work

If every vote matters, every voter matters, too. Kristen Muller, managing editor for newsgathering at Southern California Public Radio, station KPCC in Los Angeles, knew not to expect record high turnout during a recent municipal election. But when she realized some reporters in her own newsroom weren't aware an election was on the horizon, it provided a little clarity on the average 9 percent voter turnout.
