On this episode of Your Region Pod, we are looking at Community Safety Zones. What are they, why are they needed, and how are they enforced? The reality is that more kids than ever are being driven to school because parents no longer feel safe letting their kids walk, or ride their bikes. This has everything to do with the number of cars, and high rates of speed. In a sense, more cars have begotten more cars. In response to this, The Region is creating Community Safety Zones in areas with higher pedestrian volumes. To help guide us through the program we invited Valerie Smith, Director of Road Safety and Safe Mobility Programs at Parachute Canada. Leslie Maxwell from Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region. We also bring back Doug Spooner, the Interim Commissioner for Transportation Services here at The Region of Waterloo. We hope you enjoy the episode, and we'd love to know what you think. She is joined by Karen Stintz, a Conservative Party of Canada Candidate for Eglinton-Lawrence, a former Toronto City Councillor and the CEO of Variety Village, Toronto City Councillor Paula Fletcher for Ward 14 Toronto Danforth and Barbara Hall, a former Toronto Mayor. Our panel reacts to the damning Toronto auditor general findings regarding City workers responsible for maintaining parks, an online payment system the City uses, and Metrolinx making changes to its senior leadership. Will that lead to projects like the Eglinton Crosstown LRT being sped up towards completion after years of delay?    PM TRUDEAU TESTIFIES OVER FOREIGN INTERFERENCE Tasha Kheiriddin is joined by Will Stewart, a Conservative Strategist and Senior Vice President with Enterprise Canada, Robin Sears,  a Crisis Communications Consultant and former NDP Strategist and George Smitherman, a former Ontario Deputy Premier and Health Minister. This week: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau testified during the public inquiry into foreign interference. Closer to home, Ontario residents could see a rebate announced by the Ford government in its upcoming Fall economic statement. TIME TO REVISIT SAFETY AROUND PARKSIDE DRIVE Tasha Kheiriddin is joined by Faraz Gholizadeh, a Parkside resident and Co-Chair of Safe Parkside and Jacquelyn Hayward, Director of Planning, Design and Management, Transportation Services at City of Toronto. We take a closer look at a final study produced by the City of Toronto focused on enhancing safety measures for Parkside Drive by High Park where, tragically, two seniors were killed in a chain reaction crash and many collisions have taken place over the last decade. Does the plan go far enough in making the road safer for residents?

This week we have the companion interview to the Transit Unplugged TV episode from Hawaii, with Jon Nouchi, Deputy Director of the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services. For the first time, Paul doesn't just sit down with our guest; he walks and rides with Jon on the Number 8 electric bus. Jon tells Paul about his department's commitment to preserving the Hawaiian language and culture right down to having bus announcements in English and Hawaiian. While the conversation wanders into pineapples and food, Jon also reflects with Paul on their spirit of innovation as a crossroads of cultures in the middle of the Pacific. More than pretty beaches and volcanoes, Hawaii and its people are creating transit solutions that are uniquely theirs. We continue with retired Navy Command Master Chief and co-founder of Lions Guide, Keith "Flip" Griffin, with leadership lessons especially for people in the crucial middle-management layer. Middle managers are the glue that keeps organizations coordinated and connected, and Flip gives advice for managing up to the executives, down to their people, but also out and ahead to what lies on the horizon. This, and the rest of his advice, is crucial for anyone who wants to move up the ladder, and then what to do once you get there. Also on the show, Elea Carey talks about translating your agency materials into other languages. Google Translate might work okay, but native speakers will give you the edge when trying to really convey your meaning. Next week on Transit Unplugged In-Depth, we have Noah Berger, Administrator at the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority, talking about his agency, and some really cool pianos. We are excited to bring you this special episode of Transit Unplugged with world-renowned speaker and leadership expert Stephen M. R. Covey. In this riveting conversation, Paul and Stephen talk about what it means to lead people, organizations, and ourselves, today. Stephen Covey, already an expert on leadership and leadership development, faced a challenge while merging Franklin Quest and the Covey Leadership Center to form FranklinCovey. People who had been rivals and competitors were now working together and building a new company. And as Stephen tells it, things were not going well. As he studied the problem, Stephen realized the root cause was a lack of trust. Stephen figured out how to help build trust within the company and how that changed everything for the better and turned things around. Inspired by this experience, Stephen wrote the best-selling book Speed of Trust. Then based on that book's success, Stephen wrote Trust & Inspire: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash Greatness in Others, which was named the #1 Leadership Book of the Year by the Outstanding Work of Literature Awards. As Paul and Stephen explore the connections between trust, inspiration, and how we lead people, Stephen talks about how we should change our mindset to leading people and managing things. As Stephen says, people want to be led, not managed. They want to feel trusted in their job and then be able to extend that trust back to the company and its leaders. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did and share it with others. If you'd like to learn more about Stephen Covey and the Global Trust Practice at FranklinCovey, visit https://www.speedoftrust.com/.  And as an extra bonus...you can now find the Transit Unplugged podcast on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@transitunpluggedpodcast! Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Peter Butt, Co-Chair of the project to develop Canada's alcohol guidance, Dr. Kevin Shield, scientist with CAMH's Institute for Mental Health  Policy Research and  Dr. Erin Hobin from Public Health Ontario whose focus is on warning labelling. Canadians got new guidance on alcohol consumption this week and the recommendation is that no amount of alcohol is safe and that it's risky if you have more than two drinks per week. One of the things that the report says is that if you have three to six drinks on a weekly basis, your risk of developing cancers like colorectal and breast cancer increases. More than seven drinks a week increases risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. The report found that as many as 17 per cent of Canadians drink 3-6 drinks on a weekly basis while 40 per cent drink more than this a week. And, some experts want to see Cancer warning labels on alcoholic beverage bottles. ---- THE RISE IN THE POPULARITY OF MOCKTAILS Libby Znaimer is joined by Renee Suen, Food Editor of BlogTO and Gail Lynch, CEO of Zero Cocktail Bar in Toronto. Have you ever heard of a "Mocktail"--or non-alcoholic beverages in the style of cocktails that are often referred to as placebo cocktails? Well, they are really popular at bars and restaurants across Toronto. The thing is that without alcohol you would think that these drinks come a lot cheaper than their alcoholic counterparts. But, that is not the case at all. They can get really expensive and have a price tag range of anywhere between $11 to $22 in many cases. So, what's behind this trend and why is it so expensive? ---- CITY OF TORONTO'S MOST CONGESTED INTERSECTIONS  Libby Znaimer is joined by Roger Browne, Director of Traffic Management in Transportation Services at the City of Toronto. It's no secret that Toronto has a traffic congestion problem. Now, you can find out the top ten most congested intersections. At the top of the list is Lake Shore Boulevard East and Lower Sherbourne Street, followed by Finch Avenue West and Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road and then Finch Avenue West and Highway 400 South Finch WB Ramp in third place. Roger details the other intersections on the list and what the City is doing about the ongoing problem. Here are the intersections in Toronto that had the most traffic congestion in 2022: 1. Lake Shore Boulevard East & Lower Sherbourne Street 2. Finch Avenue West & Norfinch Drive/Oakdale Road 3. Finch Avenue West & 400 South Finch Westbound Ramp 4. Finch Avenue West & 400 North Finch Eastbound Ramp 5. Finch Avenue West & Signet Drive/Arrow Road 6. Lawrence Avenue East & Scarborough Golf Club Road 7. Lake Shore Boulevard East & Bay Street 8. Would you know the red flags of human trafficking to look for if you were a professional in an industry that was routinely entering homes? Would you be able to recognize signs of trafficking inside a residential brothel or other residence where a person was being exploited? Professionals in the moving and in-home delivery spaces are regularly in and out of homes and businesses in ways that other members of TAT's mobile army are not. So, we have created a new training for this niche part of transportation that equips anyone -– but specifically, the 90K+ members of the moving and storage industry -- to recognize and report trafficking. In this episode of Driving Freedom, we are joined by TAT Training Specialist and Survivor Leader Liz Williamson to hear more of her story and what movers likely saw -– and either missed or ignored –- when helping her family with professional moves during the course of her exploitation. Also joining us is Jeff Schimmel, vice president of Transportation Services at Atlas Van Lines. Jeff shares his experience using the TAT training at Atlas for several years and the excitement behind this new video TAT has created for the industry. Learn the red flags for spotting trafficking inside a home from Liz's first-hand experience, and be encouraged by Jeff as we uncover what companies in the moving and in-home delivery industries can do to help combat this issue.Resources: Link to new training page: https://truckersagainsttrafficking.org/movers-in-home-delivery/Link to Tip Sheet for Movers: https://truckersagainsttrafficking.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/TAT-Mover-Tip-Sheet.pdfLink to Tip Sheet for In-Home Delivery Professionals: https://truckersagainsttrafficking.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/In-Home-Delivery-Tip-Sheets.pdf
