This week on The Top Five Podcast, we're turning the scanners toward the ships that missed the mark as we count down our least favorite spaceship designs. After celebrating the sleek, iconic, and unforgettable vessels we love, it only felt fair to take a look at the clunky, confusing, awkward, or just plain ugly ships that never quite launched for us. From questionable shapes to baffling design choices, we're breaking down the spacecraft that left us scratching our heads instead of staring in awe. Strap in—this flight might get a little bumpy. A timeless EPCOT icon becomes the center of a modern debate about how communication continues to evolve in the age of AI. This week, Stephen reimagines the final act of Spaceship Earth, restoring its physical storytelling roots while introducing a new interactive layer that reflects how technology is reshaping human connection in real time. The result is a grounded, thoughtful update that stays true to the attraction's core thesis: bringing people closer together across distance, language, and time. From classic communication scenes to a carefully constrained AI-driven personalization system, the pitch explores what it means for Disney storytelling to remain human in an increasingly automated world.Plus, Brett of Ride Creator joins the Idiots live to pitch Mission to Mars…Needs Moms!, a chaotic crossover that combines the infamous Disney film with the classic Tomorrowland attraction in a way that somehow makes perfect sense. MIT Media Lab's Mitchel Resnick speaks with us about the development of his Lifelong Kindergarten research group and their efforts to affect the educational landscape through creative technological activities. Throughout the conversation, we describe the shifts in academic environments, starting from the free-form, highly imaginative kindergarten rooms to the stricter halls of higher learning. Mitch relates these changes to different uses of technology within the classroom setting and the differences in learning methods. He emphasizes that participatory uses of technology, such as remixing media or sharing projects, invite creativity and community for students. We compare Mitch's practices to those used by fandom and liken them to building LEGO masterpieces without instructions; both emphasize the sharing of information and building communities. This conversation with Mitch is filled with the hope that curiosity and creativity will keep people as lifelong learners. There is a question at the center of Western civilization that no institution wants to answer directly. It is not a new question. It is hiding in plain sight, in the oldest text most of us were handed as children. If God created the universe, and the universe is vast beyond any reckoning, then what exactly was happening in Genesis when the text says "let us make man in our image?" Not me. Not I. Us. That one word has haunted theology for centuries. And tonight's guest has spent decades arguing that the answer is not metaphor. It is not poetry. It is contact. Rev. Michael J.S. Carter is an ordained Interfaith Minister, a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, a Board Certified hospital chaplain, and a UFO experiencer who has been having contact encounters for approximately 35 years. He is also a Reiki Master, a counselor to other experiencers, a longtime consultant on The History Channel's Ancient Aliens, and the author of five books, the most foundational of which is Alien Scriptures: Extraterrestrials in the Holy Bible. That book argues, with theological rigor and personal testimony, that the Bible was never a document about the supernatural. It is a document about contact. That Elohim is a plural noun for a reason. That the Nephilim, the beings who descended from the sky and bred with human women, were not metaphor. That Ezekiel did not see God. He saw a craft. That Elijah did not ascend to heaven in a whirlwind. He was taken. Whitley Strieber, the author of Communion, called it the best book ever written on the topic. Rev. Carter grew up in a Black church tradition in Baltimore, trained as an actor in New York City, earned a graduate degree from one of the most demanding seminaries in the country, and then encountered beings he could not explain. Orbs of light. Grey aliens in his bedroom while his wife slept undisturbed. And a reptilian entity that physically held him down, looked him in the eye, and told him he would be rich and famous. He is also one of six people who appeared in Steven Spielberg's documentary Abduction Diaries, the production that became the blueprint for Spielberg's HBO series Taken. Tonight, we are going to pull the thread that runs from Genesis to the grey aliens in his bedroom. We are going to ask whether the most sacred books in human history have been hiding a contact record in their pages all along. We are going to ask what a reptilian being with an agenda wants from a minister from Baltimore. And we are going to ask what God actually is, once you remove everything you thought you knew about the word.
