Spring 2142 and Gated Galaxies has launched its 400 Oz-8000 ships, each carrying 50,000 "resting guests" to, hopefully, a new home on a shiny, brand-new planet. As soon as they find one. IF they find one. This is the story of one of those ships – the Oz 9 – and its tiny crew of hopeless incompeten…

Listeners of Oz 9 that love the show mention:The Oz 9 podcast is a hidden gem in the world of audio dramas. With its unique blend of idiocy, mystery, and absurdity, this show offers a fresh and entertaining experience for listeners. Despite being around for several years, it has remained under the radar, which makes finding it all the more satisfying. The intelligently written scripts, talented cast, and top-notch production value make this podcast a true standout. The Seattle roots can be felt in its absurdist yet big-hearted humor, and it manages to poke fun at different nationalities without crossing any offensive boundaries.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is its ability to keep you hooked from the very beginning. Many listeners find themselves binge-listening to multiple episodes in one sitting because they simply cannot get enough. The characters are well-written and instantly captivating, and the storyline is intriguing and hilarious at the same time. The perfect balance between comedy and mystery adds depth to each episode and keeps you engaged throughout.
While there are very few negative aspects to mention about The Oz 9 podcast, some reviewers have pointed out that the accents can be a bit over-the-top at times. While this may be intentional for comedic effect, it can be a matter of personal preference whether or not it adds to the overall enjoyment of the show. However, this minor criticism does not detract from the overall quality and brilliance of the podcast.
In conclusion, The Oz 9 podcast is an absolute must-listen for fans of comedy and sci-fi. Have you ever been invited to a party you really REALLY didn't want to go to? Like, you won't know very many people, you're not sure how to dress for it, and the atmosphere is toxic? But you're being frog-marched by an army of ants onto an away ship, so you don't really have a choice, and you're sure the chances of getting anything decent to eat are hovering at slightly below zero? Yeah, well, welcome to our world. Planet KTAALNS (Kill Them All And Leave No Survivors, or, affectionately, "Bob") awaits our bedraggled little crew, and it looks like this particularly party is going to be their last. Brought to you by the team that brought you Wolf 359, you know it's going to be good. Faith Adler has crossed the country to spend the summer in NYC. There she meets David, and the two of them quickly get mired in ... something. It's complicated. Together with friends Tori, Matt, and Ginah, Faith and David navigate situationships, friendships, found family, and all the messiness of being young. Faith is a DJ, and that pretty much describes how she approaches life — willing to scratch, skip, mute, sample, and even reverse until things start to make some sort of sense. If you love Community, High Fidelity, and Fleabag, this show definitely has your name on it. Listen to the Director's Intro with Gabriel Urbina, then head over to Audible for the full listen. I'M SORRY, WHAT? HANG ON, LET ME GET TO A QUIETER PLACE, JUST A SECOND.... Phew. That's better. Things have gone bananarama aboard the Oz 9, and the crew has spent the last few hours trying not to get dysentery or squashed crossing a digital freeway. A few folks are hanging out in Meanwhile, which is basically a Narrators' Neverland with a few extra lost boys, and someone keeps trying to stick a fish in my ear. You're welcome to join the fracas, if you really want to, but wear a helmet and avoid Wiggy. He's an asshole. To everyone who responded to our blurb writer last time, they've been sacked. I mean ... does this look like message-in-a-bottle time? Using our show notes to get attention and complain about your job.... Seriously, we've no time for whingers 'round here- HA! April fool. Still me. It was lovely seeing some of you on the socials. I'd print out your comments, only I don't have a printer and the walls are too damp to post things on. Anyway, just wanted to let you know it's "spring" on the Oz 9, which means the bioswamp is in full flower and the mating calls of the egrets is deafening. The flowers and general greenness are pretty, but the giant spiders have taken to spinning themselves ear muffs to reduce the noise. All right for some, I guess. Anyway, hope it's pretty where you are. If you haven't yet discovered the podcast How I Died, you are in for a treat! A ghoulish, scary, maybe-listen-with-a-friend "treat," but yeah, a treat nonetheless! How I Died follows the story of forensic pathologist (NOT coroner) Jon Spacer. New to the oddly fatal place to live, Springfield, Dr. Spacer has an interesting super power: he can talk with the dead. Actually, that's not that impressive, hell, I can talk to the dead, but his super power is that when they talk back, he can hear them. So maybe that's the super power: he can hear the dead. OK, I'm getting a little sidetracked. Anyway, it's a great show — annoyingly well written, fabulously acted, with intense and immersive sound design, so stick it in your ears. Once upon a time, there was a blurb writer who dreamed of the back of book jackets or maybe even the inside front flap, or the little bit of copy under the picture in a catalog, or a word or two like "stunning!" or "ribald!" on a film poster, oooo ooooo, maybe even on the inside first few pages of a novel, somewhere just under Kirkus Reviews.... But no. Instead that blurb writer does...this. Gives hints on a podcast episode you're planning to listen to anyway so you probably don't even read it. But here we are. Oooof, who cranked up the gravity? Feels heavy in here.... It's spring in the bioswamp, as much as it can ever be "spring" in space. Things are flowering, other things are ... I dunno, fauna-ing? Whatever the case, it's a bit rude round there, so maybe don't take the kids in for another month or so. And NO, I am not tearing up, I'm in the bioswamp in spring, these are allergies, for crying out loud. Or NOT crying out loud, more crying inwardly, little hiccups of despair- Oh, forget it. It's a Wednesday eve as I write this, and as I look out the porthole into the infinite recesses of space, I'm reminded how very small each of us is against the backdrop of eternity. Hey, Space Monkeys. Have you ever wondered what happened to the earth Oz 9 left behind? I mean, I'm not saying we CAUSED the zombie apocalypse, but the math works out. (Sorry, Sweden) 150 years ago, the zombie apocalypse apocalypted all over the globe, and now there's robots and zombies trying to wipe out what's left of humanity. Cali, a settlement scout, has big dreams but scarce resources who's just trying to stay alive, and Hannah, well, she's trapped in her zombie body, hoping not to eat anyone she actually cares about. Hannahpocalypse is a darkly funny story about love, fear, survival, and self-reliance while also being the podcast most likely to answer the question, do human beings really taste like chicken? It's a love story with sweet characters and queer crushes and the awkwardness that comes with having to communicate your affection while trying not to sprinkle your loved one with oregano. (zombie pro tip: seasoning is a total giveaway) But don't worry — Hannahpocalypse is Hopepunk at its heart, and you'll come away feeling lighter and easier about the coming end times. It may not sound like it in the podcast, but life aboard the Oz 9 can be pretty boring at times. In the hiatuses (hiatusi?) between hair-on-fire moments, there's a lot of just puttering about in the inky void without much to do. So, we've been creating a game to while away the hours between crises. In this conversation, you'll hear us wittering on about this game and what it might eventually look like if we can scrape together the finances and the brain cells to get it out in the world. Keep an eye and ear out for more information and a chance to support us on Kickstarter! And yes, the next "real" episode will be out soon. While Oz 9 is on hiatus (or "in hiding for tax purposes"), it's a great time to discover some new podcasts to binge. So if you're looking to adopt your next best friend, we've got you, fam. Madison On the Air is a "love letter to olde-tyme radio." Madison is a modern-day influencer who gets mysteriously yoiked back in time and shows up in some old time radio episodes. She brings her own modern attitude and utter chaos to the stories, and there's a rich back-catalog of shows you've likely heard of, even if you've never actually heard them. You may recognize creator, writer, and star Chrisi Talyn Saje — she took over the role of Julie on the Oz 9. But before she was our botanist, she was Madison Standish, cosmetics influencer and time traveler. Pretty much every episode is stand-alone, so as Chrisi says, if you find a title you like, jump in! The one you'll hear here is Forbidden Planet. Have a listen, then be sure to subscribe! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
You're in the Oz 9 void — no new episodes until, what, Halloween or something? It's cruel, we know. We hear your howls of despair. But wait! We have something for you, to fill those long, lonely hours without Once-Captain Jessie, Colin, Mrs Sheffield, Greg, or Joe (Jesus!). Yes. We got you a hiatus prezzie, and we think you're really going to like it. If you're not already familiar with Curious Matter Anthology podcast, now is the perfect time to discover this amazing show. This season, Season 3, CMA is spending the entire season on one story: The Exile. I don't want to tell you too much because (a) spoilers, and (b) I've been typing all day and I'm seriously sick of it. And this is, you know, a podcast, so maybe just listen. It's my discussion with co-producers Jonathan Pezza (writer) and Tiffany Smith (lead) on how they assembled a dazzling cast, how Jonathan does his immersive sound design that's as cinematic as anything you'll see at your local multiplex, how podcasts differ from other media and what that means for actors and directors, and so much more. Well, ain't this a kick in the underpants? No one would have believed, on that random Tuesday in 2142, that the Oz 9 would still be kicking (mumble) months later. And yet, as we stare down the barrel of our 100th full episode, well, here we still are, just to the left of Uranus, clueless and shivering in the dark. But isn't that just the human condition, basically? I mean... if we're going to philosophize.... Oh, let's not. Pour yourself something naughty and well-deserved, prepare tissue for the inevitable nosebleed, and roll the episode. Happy 100, Space Monkeys — so glad to have you still on board. It's time to check under the bed, make sure the closet doors are firmly shut, tuck any clown toys in your siblings' rooms or the freezer, and crank up the nightlight — things are getting spooky on the Oz 9. "Something is coming," and it's probably not bearing ice cream or prezzies. The crew of the 9 are in trouble, and though this is no big surprise, it is nearly the end of the season, so you never know.... So, a few things to discuss here. Basically, don't do ANYTHING you hear in this episode. So, I guess there's really only one thing to discuss. Never mind. Some warnings: sounds of person drowning. Some painful but non-lethal punching. There are no credits on this episode, so I'mma do them here. You've been listening to: Tim Sherburn as Colin and Emily Bonnie Brantley as Jessie Eric Perry as Howard Oz 9's theme music is composed and performed by John Faley; Lucas Elliott creates our artwork. If you haven't heard Best in Galaxy, (bestingalaxy.com) do yourself a favor and get that IN YOUR EARS. Oz 9 is written by Shannon Perry. The trailer you hear is from World Gone Wrong. I've listened to the first ep, and yeah, this is a good 'un. Get in there early so you can be smug about it later. I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. Have you ever met a Kestochalian? Actually, you might have. They're sort of lovely, except when you want to thump them on the snoot. Which, to be fair, is true of a lot of living things. Also my computer. Which, if it had a snoot, would have been thoroughly thumped on today. ANYWAY, we made something for you, and if you've ever made a huge Sunday meal, this is kind of like that. We slaved all day, it'll be over in 20 minutes, and then we start over. Do I sound crabby? I feel kind of crabby. Olivia frequently just gets bored watching the crew of the Oz 9 tangle themselves up in disasters of their own making, and lately she's been downloading podcasts to listen to. She recently stumbled across The Sprouting, a show about battling plants (wait for it) .... cleverly. And she liked it. Like ... a lot. She doesn't like ANYTHING, so we're all a bit shocked over here. Please take a listen to the supercut of The Sprouting, then find the show wherever you listen to podcasts! Dear listener, Welcome back to The Cradle. Our protagonists meet at a fuel stop... sorry, Gas Station... and come to the realization that travelling onwards as a group is far safer than travelling alone. As they navigate this eldritch plant strewn world, what horrors might they encounter? I guess you're about to find out. Well, cue the sultry saxophone and the wire-brushed cymbals, we're back for part II of our "noir" wormhole. We had high hopes for this one (as in, high hopes everyone would get shot and this nightmare would finally be at an end), but we're only down a tour guide, and even he just seems to have wandered off. Goldipants Detective Agency is hot on the heels of Red (aka Colin Smith aka Horace MacRory), the millionaire gangster whose morals are as slippery as his accent. Will Pluto and Donna track down the bad guy before we lose any more scientists? Will Mrs S and Donna survive their brush with the Big Bad? Also, what the hell's a nereid? You've been listening to: Lee Shackleford as Pluto Bonnie Brantley as Donna Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Tim Sherburn as Colin David S Dear as Dr. Theo Bromae Eric Perry as Joe Kevin Hall as Greg With special guest Bob Killion as the Admiral Chris Nadolny Gourley is your Narrator Many thanks to one of our all-time favorite podcasts, Mission: Rejected, for loaning us the character of the Admiral. It's a quiet night on the mean streets of ... uhhhhh ... doesn't matter. And it's not that quiet, either. Lemme start this again. It's a Tuesday night, and the Oz 9 has slipped into yet another wormhole. But it's OK. This one comes with hats. You've been listening to: Lee Shackleford as Pluto Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Bonnie Brantley as Donna David S. It's part 2 of this, and then I swear, we're finished and you can go back to just suspecting how pretentious we are rather than having the receipts. We know Feb 14 can be a bit rough for some, so we wanted to give you the subtle sounds of barfing fairies to help you get through the day. Just know, we love your goofy, kooky self ALL days of the year. As Narrator 2 says in this episode, "English majors must perforce English maj," so here's the episode you've all been dreading: the Fakespeare. Come on, stop whining, you knew it was coming. If you're not familiar with A Midsummer Night's Dream, well, there are lots of really excellent versions out there. We prefer you NOT listen to those, however, as that's going to make this seem even more torturous than being read Vogon poetry before being shot out into space. That said, it was fun to write and fun to do, so ... get over it. Also, the second half should show up on Feb. 14, a day some folks seem to think is special. Thou hast been listening to... David S Dear as Dr. Theo Bromae Kevin Hall as Greg Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Eric Perry as Dr. von Haber Zetzer Shannon Perry as Olivia Chrisi Talyn Saje as Julie Tim Sherburn as Colin Sarah Rhea Warner as Pipistrelle Bonnie Brantley as Duckweed, Wooly Sedge, Horsetail, and Cattail. Kyle Jones is your Narrator 2, And Chris Nadolny Gourley is your Narrator. Our music was writ by John Faley, and our artwork from the fevered brow of Lucas Elliott. Sarah Golding our dialogue did edit, and Shannon Perry our sound design'ed. Lamentably, our story of Oz 9, much like the alien of old, did explode from the head of Shannon Perry and wreaketh much havoc upon a space ship. Check out more nonsense at https://oz-9.com. This episode... it fought back, I tell you what. But we finally wrangled it into some sort of shape. I'mma go with "parallelogram," because it looks like it's about to fall over, but it's a shape, anyway. We meant to get this out when we were still in the throes of the holiday season, but hey, it's Winnie the Pooh Day, and I reckon that's worth celebrating. It's also National Michigan day, soooooo, go, Michigan, I guess. It's episode 90! And that's the best thing we can say about it. There's a lot of sampling of condiments. Word of warning: don't get between (former) Cpt. It's nearly Christmas as I type this, and I'm bah humbugging like your least favorite neighbor, but throwing out an episode of Oz 9 always makes me happy. I like making the world just a little bit goofier and more confusing. We have some additions to our ship today, and they are stupid cute in the manner of those "got my kid a puppy" videos that are all over the socials, only these might make you cry for entirely different reasons. But we'll see, I guess; they don't have many teeth yet. Anything else I should mention? Oh yeah: happy hols, Space Monkeys. You're the biggest bunch of goofballs this galaxy has ever seen (and I'm talking about the galaxy with DNA's Hooloovoos in it, so you know it's seen some things), but we love you. We turned five years old yesterday. The podcast, I mean — Oz 9 just turned 5. How we've lasted that long, we have no idea, but we suspect it has something to do with the fact that everyone is slightly fried from the pandemic and not giving real life 100% of their attention just now. And that's cool. Real life can be a bit of a turd on a hot plate now and again, so suspending reality right alongside disbelief seems like a healthy decision. All of which to say, thanks for hanging out with us. Gravity — both the being-serious kind and the falling-down kind — is not something we handle well. You clearly don't either, and we're happy you chose to unfurl your freak flag across the nose of the 9. High five, space monkey. We wouldn't be here without you. And the healer pod. Remember those days, hanging out at the mall, thinking Spencer's Gifts was the height of counter-culture because they had festive roach clips? Yeah, me neither. I spent all my time at Waldenbooks. Anyway, get ready for a trip backwards in time to the mall. I can almost smell the Orange Julius and Cinnabon (which reminded me that I made coffee that was currently cooling in the other room, dammit. I'm back now) and hear the yelps as another pre-teen gets their ears pierced at Claire's. There's a very confused security guard -slash-sommelier, some moaning, and somebody ends up with an earring in their forehead. (Now taking bets on who THAT turns out to be.) Because you haven't got the sense nature gave a goat, you're listening to: Chrisi Talyn Saje as Julie Sarah Rhea Werner as Pipistrelle Eric Perry as Joe Aaron Clark as Le Bichon Frise Shannon Perry as Madeline and Olivia Lee Shackleford as Pluto introducing the Narrator's kiddo, Michaela Nadolny Gourley as Emma, the Counter Girl and John Dowgin of Mission: Rejected as Cyril the Security Guy. Continuing in our endeavor to educate the public, much of the cowboy vernacular here is authentic. Well, some of it. "Brown gargle," for example, is totally legit. Should it come up on Jeopardy at some point, we expect compensation. The crew continue to explore the Oz 9, sometimes voluntarily. We know these stupid sandwich machines are trying to tell us something, but knowing that and actually understanding what that "something" is are two different things, and let's face it, this bunch have only just managed speech. Honestly, there's just nothing good to be gained from listening to this. It's a bunch of people old enough to know better being very silly while affecting various accents (with varying degrees of success). Good ahead and listen if you want to, but please wear headphones and do something redemptive with your hands, like making food for unhoused people or picking your nose. We'll all feel better about it. Much thanks to Sarah Golding, to whom all credit (and frankly, blame) belongs. Yer ever-lovin', Crew Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
I know, I know, I skip a lot of bonus episodes too, but srsly, give this one a listen. Not only is Jonathan smarter than the entire crew of the Oz 9 concurrently and consecutively (yes, low bar, but still), he's also got really fun things to tell us about. Hear the interview, then for goodness' sake, stick around and hear his full-cast, immersive audio adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow." Exploring the Oz 9 isn't like exploring brave new worlds in the manner of highly questionable colonialists of eras past. Except for the alligators. And the swampy bits. Also not knowing what's safe to eat (hint: not bloody much). And the near-fatal encounters on a daily basis. OK, so it's actually quite a bit like exploring brave new worlds, except for the bravery. Just... listen to the episode. Try to stay out of the quagmires, and if you do get quagged, at least wipe your feet before you go wandering around the ship. You've been listening to... Eric Perry as Joe Bonnie Brantley as Lady Nibble Biscuit and Jessie Tim Sherburn as Colin Sarah Golding as Mrs Sheffield Shannon Perry as Madeline and Olivia Special thanks to J Michael DeAngelis from Mission: Rejected for taking on the role of The Cowboy. Exploration of the Oz 9 continues, and it's not going well. Though we did find some goldfish. And some bumper cars. Traveling via vending machine is just unpredictable and not nearly as filling as you might imagine, but the crew are blundering around the ship from room to room and sandwich to sandwich, flirting with cowboys and this sentence is a bit long so I'm stopping now. You've been listening to... You know how they say "dog bites man" isn't a story, but "man bites dog" is? First, don't bite dogs. Second, think of how many things you've taken from a junk food machine. Yeah, there's a parallel in here somewhere, and it's super spooky, but I'm tired and you're going to have to make the connection yourself. In this episode, Olivia's I-drops (iDrops?) have gotten mixed up with some other substances, and, well, if you thought added chaos might cancel out existing chaos....nope. It just piles on. Yes, I KNOW we said January, but hey, it's January somewhere, right? The Oz 9 crew are finally (?) done with their plant-based emergency and have broken free of the Milky Way Galaxy. They're currently lurking in a galaxy that (if you're looking at it sideways and are 9 years old) has a vaguely rude shape. That should keep them entertained for a while. Anyway, they might actually get off the 9 and explore a strange new world here soon, so now's probably a good time to say goodbye. Please stay through the end credits to hear a very cool trailer for a very good show. And we haven't gotten any reviews for, like, AGES, so you know , if you wanted to , you could, like, leave us one or something. No biggie. I tell ya, you turn your back for, like, three months, and someone just shoulders their way in there and takes over your ship, your characters... sheeesh. ANYWAY, if you're familiar with A Ninth World Journal or Deconstructive Criticism, you've already enjoyed the work of our own Dr. Theo Bromae, better known as David S. Dear. In this bonus episode, he gives us a glimpse of life behind the curtain. And in front of the toilet door COME ON ALREADY SOME OF US HAD RICE KUDZPIES AT SNACKTIME. Tim Sherburn as Colin Bonnie Brantley as Jessie Shannon Perry as Madeline Kevin Hall as GregDavid S. Dear as himself Kyle Jones as Narrator 2 and Chris Nadolny Gourley as your Narrator Our music is by John Faley; our artwork is by Lucas Elliott. Typically, Sarah Golding is our dialog editor, and Oliver Morris is our sound designer, but you have Shannon Perry to blame for those this time. This episode of Oz-9 was written by David S. Dear.
Welcome to the Audiotorium. It's Discussing Oz 9, with Narrator and Narrator 2, Pluto, and other assorted folks. (http://www.discussingnetwork.com/) But in the style of Discussing Stuff, it's a review of Oz 9's season 4, so if you haven't listened to all of season 4, well, spoilers, sweetie. This episode was written by Kyle Jones and features ... If you struggled through the classically complex and layered story of the last four seasons, you're not alone. It was, as Mrs Sheffield has it, "more twisty-turny than my graduate teaching assistant's insides after my AP Honours' Intestinal Inversion lecture and practicuum." So Dr. Charles Tucket, who you may remember from another hiatus episode, The Oz 8000 Biosphere: Portrait of a Refuge, has been unthawed once again to provide some much-needed and hopefully not teeth-grittingly dull exposition and explanation.
