Hey there! In today's episode, I'm flipping the mic and sharing an interview of me—recorded on the Drunk-ish podcast with the hilarious and wise Stefanie Wilder-Taylor—comedian, author of Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay and Drunk-ish, and one of the original mom writers who made me feel seen in the early days of parenting (and wine o'clock). If you've ever wanted to hear the full origin story—like, how I went from a straight-A, people-pleasing diplomat's kid to doing rugby keg runs in college and the book I read that made me recognize I might have a problem with alcohol… all the way to how I finally quit drinking, why I went back after a year sober, and what it took to stop for good—this is the episode for you. Dr. Dan talks to the always inspiring Stefanie Wilder-Taylor — author, TV personality, cohost of the popular podcast For Crying Out Loud, and Mom —about her memoir DRUNK-ISH: Loving and Leaving Alcohol. In this episode, Stefanie recounts the rise and fall of her relationship with alcohol, from liquor cabinet concoctions at age 14 to her online fame as a wine-loving mommy blogger to the disastrous evening when she drove drunk with her kids in the car that marked the end. Stefanie discusses her story, her parenting, her recovery and more with Dr. Dan. This is a powerful and reassuring discussion because Stefanie shares openly and honestly with Dr. Dan throughout their conversation. Listeners will appreciate the message that struggling with addiction does not mean you are deficient, bad, or alone. Stefanie Wilder-Taylor is a comedian, author, and podcaster who's making her second appearance on The Only One In The Room. Her new, best-selling book, Drunk-ish, is all about her journey to sobriety and is available wherever you get your books. She's been recording her popular parenting & comedy podcast For Crying Out Loud for over 13 years now with her co-host Lynette Carolla. Laura welcomes Stefanie back to the show and two reminisce about their friendship over the years for a bit before diving into sobriety. Stefanie tells a story about the first New Year's Eve she spent sober, as well as the time she tried her first beer as a teenager. Stefanie then talks about how she would normalize her excessive amounts of drinking, and how being a stand-up comedian helped feed into her addiction. Laura and Stef then have an honest discussion about Xanax addiction and how it's both similar and different from alcoholism. Stefanie also remembers the time when she was called out by a New York Times journalist, and the online backlash that followed. Before they wrap, Stefanie recalls the event that pushed her to get sober. This leads to a discussion about having a “high-bottom” and getting used to a booze free lifestyle.Check out Stefanie's first appearance on The Only One In The Room Here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/stefanie-wilder-taylor-is-the-only-sober-mom-in-the/id1457399201?i=1000437396321For more on Stefanie Wilder-Taylor: Email: babyonbored@gmail.comWebsite: https://stefaniewildertaylor.com/IG:@stefaniewildertaylorFB:@stefaniewildertaylorHer new book: Drunkish https://www.amazon.com/Drunk-ish-Memoir-Loving-Leaving-Alcohol/dp/B0CBCVYRJ4/Her Podcast: For Crying Out Loud https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/for-crying-out-loud/id354082588 Visit our website: https://theonlyonepod.com/ for full interviews, videos, event dates, articles and more. Stefanie Wilder-Taylor was a cool mom who loved wine. As an author and blogger, she made a name for herself championing mom's right to booze. What better way to unwind during naptime than with a drink? But despite her jokes, she could never quite quell the nagging internal voice that maybe she was drinking too much. After nearly 30 years of shoving that voice way down, Stefanie crosses an unthinkable line while drunk. She shares with Stephanie how her winding journey to sobriety included upending her public image – and discovering she wasn't the only mom hearing the nagging voice. Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, author, TV personality, and co-host of the popular podcast For Crying Out Loud, speaks to Zibby about DRUNK-ISH, the hilariously candid and refreshingly honest account of her break-up with alcohol. Stefanie shares what it was like to quit drinking fourteen years ago, after the shock of putting her family in danger and immediately reevaluating her relationship with alcohol. She also talks about mommy wine culture, the use of humor in her writing as a way to navigate uncomfortable truths, and the positive impact her honesty and vulnerability have had.Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/3OcbzD7Share, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! This podcast episode is a deeply personal one because the work of my guest, Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, both influenced my identity as a ‘fun mom' who loved to drink and was an inspirational guide on my journey to sobriety. When I became a mom I fell in love with my son, and was also quickly overwhelmed by the physical and emotional work of taking care of a baby. I couldn't believe how quickly my life changed and my independence and autonomy disappeared. I wondered if I would ever be able to relax and have fun again since my life was now dominated by work, running to day care, baby food, baths, bedtime and not much else. And I loved to drink. So when I discovered Stefanie's funny books about motherhood with titles like Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay and Naptime Is the New Happy Hour I felt like I'd found my people. That morning, in the coffee shop, my son was 16 months old. It was 17 months after Naptime Is the New Happy Hour was published. I bought the paper and hid it away. Today I got to thank Stefanie for her honesty, bravery and vulnerability, both in stopping drinking and being brave enough to talk about it. 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women. Recently, the royal family of Denmark made headlines over Queen Margarethe stripping the HRH titles from her four youngest grandchildren. The drama of men's uniforms at Prince Philip's funeral, the Red Bull heir who is on the run after killing a cop, the SaltLife Co-Founder who killed his girlfriend in a seedy motel room, are UFOs real, the Sackler family suicide cover up and Ghislaine Maxwell's tactics to recruit young women. Carrie opens the show this week digging into the headlines; Salt Life Co-founder accidentally killed his girlfriend, the Red Bull heir dragged a cop in a car crash, hostility between the two Danish princesses and how did the Queen handle the men in her family who wanted to wear uniforms to her husband's funeral. (Carrie talks a lot in the first part of the episode & curses a few times- not cool on either). Larissa talks about the scandal involving the AT&T commercial girl and finishing up the generational dysfunction that is Ghislaine Maxwell. Carrie & Larissa are back! They open the show talking about Halston & Ewan McGregor's portrayal of the designer on Netflix; apparently, the family is not too happy about it. A new book has been released, Zero Fail, about the Service Service. Rumor has it- two Trump family members got a little close with their agents a la The Bodyguard movie. The ladies briefly touch on the accusations of models against the Elite Modeling Agency- will there be a new wave of #MeToo? The private letters of JFK's mistress are up for auction and the son of El Chapo's partner who flipped on the cartel is released & the US is refusing to say where.
