Everyone needs a Beach Boy break every now and then, and I'm happy as a clam to announce this sharp left turn with Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite, as we take a mutual descent into the heart of darkness. Our examination of every last triumphantly bleak release by post-punk progenitors Joy Division is a dependably in-depth celebration of this great band's “eerie spatially.”Here's just a few of the many things that Stuart discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:The avalanche of crazily top-shelf singles Joy Division released between their two LPs, including “Love Will Tear Us Apart”;The obscure song from which Joy Division cribbed the riff for “Love Will Tear Us Apart”;The super-cool but maddening-at-the-time decision to do an exclusive release of Stuart's all-time favorite Joy Division 45 through a French fanzine; The unfortunate inverse ratio of the band's success to Ian Curtis's worsening epilepsy and suicidal urges; The crucial role that mundane conversation held in Joy Division's band rehearsals; The details surrounding Ian Curtis's tragic suicide;Stuart's favorite album of all time; And a track-by-track rundown of Joy Division's posthumous classic Closer.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income.

Long standing listeners will know that the Celtic Underground Podcast and Mogwai go back a long way. If you've ever heard the Tales from The Celtic wiki or the more recent Hail Hail History Tales you will have heard The Sun Smells Too Loud playing in the background and, for the unitiated, that is by Stuart's band Mogwai.Born in Lanark, Stuart is a founding member of Mogwai and after 10 studio albums, there is now a film out about this iconic band - If the Stars Had A Sound, which takes us from the bands formation through to the most recent album. The Guardian describes the film as follows “It has a purist approach, taking cues from the band's anti-logorrheic approach by offering only a loose biography and comparatively little by way of analysis. All the better to let their majestic instrumental squalls fill the space, unencumbered by too much guiding commentary.”But as we all know, Stuart has a love of Celtic and he and Andrew explore all of this on the podcast. He also gives us an exclusive on how we nearly had the perfect Celtic/Mogwai collaboration. As a taster to non-subscribers of the quality of content produce by Celtic Underground, we've made this “In Conversation” podcast free to all.If you like it, why not subscribe, or share the joy of CU with others…Christmas is coming afterall… This is a public episode. In this episode of the Art of Longevity, we have the pleasure of chatting with Stuart Braithwaite, a member of the internationally renowned post-rock band Mogwai. Known for their masterful use of crescendos, Mogwai have been making music since 1995, with 11 studio albums that have gained increasing popularity over time, with their latest 'As The Love Continues' reaching the lofty milestone of #1 in the UK album chart.Stuart's recently published autobiography, 'Spaceships Over Glasgow,' offers an insightful exploration of the band's progression and key periods of their journey. Though they never consciously planned for their success, Stuart shares some valuable insights into how artists can remain relevant and popular over a long period of time. “I can't see any of this as conscious…' We weren't expecting to be making 5/ 6 albums, never mind 10/11”.Despite the resolute lack of long-term planning, Stuart and his merry band have become masters of the music long game. One key takeaway is the importance of confident incremental steps and staying true to the original values that inspired them to pursue music. Stuart notes that some bands lose their edge by changing their sound to fit a particular trend, while Mogwai remained steadfast in their approach.Maybe they are simply building to the crescendo that destroys all crescendos!Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

We start today's show with a quick review of 'Spaceships Over Glasgow' by Stuart Braithwaite, 'Almost Home' by Mima Merrow and the 'This England' TV show. 2/3 of these helped me recover from a serious case of man-flu this week and helped ease me into sober october. This week's main event is a conversation from July 2022 with synth-pop punk icon Manda Rin of bis who were the first unsigned band to play Top of the Pops and are celebrating their latest album with a UK tour in October (dates below) . They made some epic hits including 'Kandypop' and 'Eurodisco' which saw them sell over 100,000 albums in their first week in Japan alone. Our latest guests on Soundtracking are members of a band I hugely admire, who have done plenty sterling work on film and television in addition to their studio albums. Stuart Braithwaite and Barry Burns are half of Mogwai, whose screen work includes The Returned, Atomic, Zidane, The Fountain, Before The Flood and ZeroZeroZero. Their latest album, meanwhile, is As The Love Continues, which reached number one in the UK charts and was also nominated for a Mercury Prize.
I love Mogwai, so it was a pleasure to speak to Stuart Braithwaite for this sometimes feisty (hey, I was a teenage Blur fan!), often illuminating episode of my music podcast. I did intend to ask the Mogwai guitarist and sometimes singer about the bands lucious tenth album, As The Love Continues, which was released in February this year, topped the UK album charts, and, earlier this month, saw the band in contention for the Mercury Prize. That conversation didn't happen, but an interesting one – one by two fanzine-loving-DIY-punk-indie rock-fans of an age, confused about where the world they grew up in went to – played out instead. I'm sure we'll reconvene at some point for part two!A quick note on this episode. It's not the greatest audio. I've worked really hard to tidy things up the best I can and I can only think that there were gremlins at play during my conversation with Stuart. It's 1997. A young John Robins is studying for a GCSE in ‘Landlording'. His life is dominated by Queen, and provides the soundtrack to his school years. However, his life is about to be turned upside down with the release of Mogwai's debut album Young Team. Post-rock is about to become John's music of choice, and Mogwai will forever have a special place in his heart.Flash forward to 2021. Landlord John, wearing the Mogwai T-shirt he's had for over 20 years, is cleaning the bar at The Moon Under Water when he notices someone walking towards the pub. Through the mist comes a familiar face. It appears the stars have aligned, as the man walking towards him is none other than Mogwai guitarist, vocalist and founding member Stuart Braithwaite!Stuart has toured the world during his time in Mogwai, and grew up in one of the UK's greatest pub cities: Glasgow. He will certainly have some amazing pub stories to tell and we welcome him into The Moon Under Water with open arms, but let's just hope John is able to still pour pints despite his excitement. Tickets for The Moon Under Water Live are on sale now! Throughout August and September we'll be inviting special guests to create their dream pub LIVE from a real pub (The George IV in Chiswick). Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite, Slowdive's Rachel Goswell, Slint's David Pajo, and Beth Jeans Houghton - aka Du Blonde - discuss how much they care about their live shows sounding like the record, and that awkward moment when you forget the words to your own song live on stage. Stuart Braithwaite is a guitarist, songwriter and vocalist in Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, who have released 10 studio albums since forming in 1995. Their most recent record, As the Love Continues, went to number one in the UK earlier this year, and marks 25 years since their debut single. Stuart's guests include friend and collaborator Rachel Goswell, best known as the vocalist and guitarist in shoegaze band Slowdive. She's also a member of the Soft Cavalry and supergroup the Minor Victories, alongside Stuart. Also joining them is David Pajo, famed for his guitar shredding in US post-rock band Slint. He's also collaborated with the likes of Interpol, Stereolab, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. And Beth Jeans Houghton is a London-based artist who makes music under the moniker Du Blonde. Her latest record, Homecoming, came out earlier this year. She's also directed music videos for the likes of Ezra Furman, LUMP, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

After over 25 years in the game, Mogwai are a band that should need no introduction. Yet, perhaps because of their primarily instrumental nature, the Scottish post-rock band only recently received their first chart-topping album with 2021’s 'As the Love Continues.' Hitting No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart this past February, the record builds upon the emotively expansive world-constructing sound they’ve become masters of. For Live on KEXP, Troy Nelson takes us through a brief history of the band and shares snippets of DJ Morgan’s interview with Stuart Braithwaite about the lockdown-made record before the band plays a kaleidoscopic four-song set. Welcome to episode 28 of Songs From a Padded Envelope. We are joined by Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite for this episode which is something both Ben and I were so excited about, both being long-time fans of the band. Stuart spoke to us from his home in Glasgow and, despite some wifi difficulties at both ends, we had a fantastic conversation which culminates with Stuart sharing the home demo for the band's single, Ritchie Sacramento. There is a link to the brilliant video for Ritchie Sacramento below, which is great to hear after listening to the demo and hearing Stuart speak about the evolution of the song. Sincere thanks to Stuart for making time to speak with us and for sharing the demo. If you're enjoying the podcast, please do take a moment to drop a 5-star review up on Apple podcasts or help us spread the word about the show. We'd really appreciate it. Love and thanks Steve and Ben x Ritchie Sacramento video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWjzlJEmmxM https://www.mogwai.scot/ http://rockaction.co.uk/

Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite joins host John Doran. In our host's own words, "Scottish masters of the sublime Mogwai found fertile new ground between post-rock, goth and indie during the '90s. Offering a welcome counterbalance to the comparatively lighter sounds of Britpop. Nine studio albums later, for many, they remain to this day a blue print of what an independent group should be.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

FIFTY episodes!Yes, I know it says 24 up there but if you count For A' That and the couple of little specials, this one makes fifty. That being the case I'd like to say thanks to all the guests, the people who have helped to promote it, the people who tune in every week and those who put it on FB and tweet it and whatever the latest new-fangled thing is. The help is much appreciated. Also thanks to those of you who have donated a little to help us out with the costs that come up from time to time. If you'd like to help out with that then the button is up on the right of my blog page (link below).Anyway, for this 50th episode I was joined by Stuart Braithwaite who is the guitarist from the band Mogwai, who I am sure most of you have heard of. We talked about what convinced Stuart of the need for independence, that little song they wrote regarding Thatcher, and much more. Stuart talked about his discomfort with the mud-slinging and negativity in the debate.Did The Proclaimers open things up for Scottish mainstream musicians to sing in their own accents?Have the Yes campaign been too nicey nicey so far? Would getting a bit more aggressive help?I also took the opportunity to vent a little about Bono and Geldof and we discussed how scary the lurch towards UKIP is.Finally we got on to what artists and musicians and so on can contribute to the debate.Hope you enjoy…LINKShttps://twitter.com/plasmatronhttps://twitter.com/mgreenwellhttps://twitter.com/mogwaibandhttp://mogwai.sandbag.uk.com/lesrevenants/http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com
