Flore Laurentienne - "Voiles" from the 2022 album Volume II on RVNG Intl. Recording under the name Flore Laurentienne, composer, orchestrator, and musician Mathieu David Gagnon captures rich, romantic instrumentals, inspired by the wilderness in his hometown of Montreal, Québec. In fact, his latest album — titled Volume II — was inspired by Canada's St. Lawrence River, with the instrumentation designed to "illustrate and illuminate the river's flow." A full-house today in the Foxy Digitalis zone. A quick recap on the opening week(end) of my exhibition, “The Sound Leaves,” which was among the best times I've had in a while. I need to do more of that! Plus there's some real bangers out this week, especially my Album of the Week from the great Lau Nau. And if that wasn't enough, around 12 minutes in, I have a conversation with RVNG Intl's Matt Werth about the new boxed set of Pauline Anna Strom reissues - essential listening if there ever was!Album of the Week: Lau Nau “Aphrilis”This Week's Links:The Sound LeavesThe Sound Leaves at Philbrook MuseumPauline Anna Strom “Echoes, Spaces, Lines”Patrick Shiroishi “i was too young to hear silence”Niecy Blues “Exit Simulation”Lucy Railton “Corner Dancer”Foxy Digitalis is an online music resource and organization promoting music in the margins with the idea that sound is for everyone. M. Sage is one of the most generous and thoughtful artists. His new album, “Paradise Crick,” finds joy in sonic reverie, and getting lost in that world makes things feel a little brighter. This conversation about the album felt so good. After a rough morning, talking to Sage about whimsy, pleasure, and so much more, I felt so much better and refreshed. He and his work have that kind of effect on people. “Paradise Crick” is out now on RVNG Intl. https://msage.bandcamp.com/album/paradise-crick https://foxydigitalis.zone/2023/06/09/foxy-digitalis-daily-6-9-23-m-sage/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Lucrecia Dalt - "Contenida" from the 2022 album ¡Ay! on RVNG Intl. On her eighth and latest LP ¡Ay!, Colombian-born, Berlin-based artist Lucrecia Dalt celebrates both her homeland and outer space. Infusing childhood influences of bolero, mambo, merengue, and salsa into her synth-heavy soundscapes, she tells the story of Preta, an extraterrestrial being who lands on Earth. The ten-track album examines themes of love, time, and on today's Song of the Day, existence. "A falling progression, vocals harmonizing, a jazzy something… Why not?," she describes to The Fader in a track-by-track. "Playing this piece live, it's become one of my favorites from the album. Fun to perform, fun to dance to. Can you imagine being bodiless and suddenly feeling trapped, like theatrical containment? Irreversible…" Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tashi Wada joins Nikita Gale and Alexander Provan to speak about technologies that claim to capture the souls of performers. Wada presents a composition for a “high-resolution player piano” and asks how we discern between human expression and technical perfection, how we listen to virtuosos and machines. He speaks about the pandemic-era vogue for liveness at home, the displacement of pianists by piano rolls (or proprietary software), and the differences between people and marionettes. And, with Gale and Provan, he listens to Conlon Nancarrow, Glenn Gould, Perry Como, advertisements for hi-fi systems, the ghost of Art Tatum, and the stars of Hologram USA Theater.Tashi Wada is a Los Angeles-based composer and performer who founded and runs the label Saltern. His most recent album, Nue, was released by RVNG Intl. in 2018.The composition presented on this episode, Table of Visions, was commissioned by Triple Canopy as part of a residency at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and written for the Steinway Spirio, a player piano designed to record and replay live performances. (Triple Canopy recently published an essay about the composition with recordings of two sketches, excerpts of which are played on this episode.) With Gale and Provan, Wada speaks about the history and future of “high-resolution” technologies, which aim to approximate (or supplant) liveness—and, increasingly, are aided by precise records of all that we say, do, and play. They discuss the age-old dream of perfect fidelity as manifest in musical automata, cutting-edge stereos, and holograms of Tupac and Michael Jackson. And they ask how the pursuit of performances that exceed human capabilities change us as listeners as well as laborers. In this episode, Gale, Provan, and Wada speak about Philip Auslander's Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture (Routledge, 1999); Heinrich von Kleist's “On the Marionette Theatre,” 1810; and the work of Patrick Feaster, a specialist in the history, culture, and preservation of early sound media. In order of appearance, the music and other recordings played on this episode are: Steinway & Sons, “The Features of the Steinway & Sons SPIRIO | r,” 2019; Glenn Gould playing Bach's “Contrapunctus IV,” “Glenn Gould on Bach,” Sunday Concert, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, 1962; Perry Como, “Goodbye, Sue,” (Victor, 1943); Conlon Nancarrow, “Study For Player Piano No. 13” Studies for Piano Player (Other Minds, 1977); “Study For Player Piano No. 42,” Conlon Nancarrow: Studies for Player Piano, Vol. V (Wergo, 2018); a film by RCA that introduces the company's high-fidelity stereo system, 1957; “Variations on Glenn Gould,” Telescope, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, 1969.Medium Rotation is produced by Alexander Provan with Andrew Leland, and edited by Provan with Matt Frassica. Tashi Wada composed the theme music. Matt Mehlan acted as audio engineer and contributed additional music.Medium Rotation is made possible through generous contributions from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Nicholas Harteau. This season of Medium Rotation is part of Triple Canopy's twenty-sixth issue, Two Ears and One Mouth, which receives support from the Stolbun Collection, the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, Agnes Gund, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
Tonight's edition features new music from Loscil, Mammal Hands, K. Leimer and a spin from Bay Area electronic composer Pauline Anna Strom's first record in 30 years (spoiler: it's fabulous). Traditional Japanese instrumentation broken into hypertextural ambient music. That describes the sound of Sugai Ken well. He is releasing his new album UkabazUmorezU tomorrow on the New Yorker label RVNG Intl. A record he describes as conjuring the “subtle and profound ambience of night in Japan,” it collects 11 hypnotic ambient pieces constructed from field recordings taken around his home of Kanagawa and its local performing arts center. Here he has carefully collected some gems from RVNG Intl catalogue. It is a beautiful, drifting listening experience. definitely a special treat for fans of intricate sonic textures and expanding soundscapes. Stellar OM Source is a producer who never sits still. Always growing with each new release, the French woman arrived on a wave of dreamy and evocative synth pieces then went on to make Drexcyian techno and acid laced sci-fi soundtracks. She’s done so over the course of eight albums and a handful of EPs mostly on Rvng Intl. and though quiet on the release front for the last couple of years, she still serves up compelling club sets. Her mix here is a short, snappy and freaky one that leaves you wanting more. It’s a selection composed entirely of Belgian music because, she says, "I wanted to give back some love to the people of the country where I live. So many great talents and so much inspiration. Most tracks have been given by the producers themselves." From frazzled industrial techno to haunting EBM, sparse atmospheric tracks to groaning electronics, it packs a lot in over a short time and is utterly refreshing.
For many years In Flagranti have been treating us to some of the best music out there. Releasing on Phantasy, Rvng Intl, Kitsune, Kill The Dj and many more including their own Codek Records label. Their soundcloud page is interesting to me personally. This project has always pushed to explore the inside of musicians and artists by listening to what has inspired them. "Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to.” - this is what is included on the bottom of the description. You know the end result at this point, let's get back to the roots and explore music that influenced this production. Sasa Crnobrnja (pronounced Sasha) is taking his valuable studio time in London to share his personal favourites. All of this in the hour two. First hour dedicated to some new music (and so far September has been fruitful) and a new track preview from our host.
The moment I heard Rami Malek whisper "Mind awake, body asleep" (Mr Robot, series 2) I knew this would be the inspiration for a new mix. A mix about half-sleep, lucid dreaming impressions... ungraspable images... and about "letting go". After all, Mr. Robot's tagline was "Control is an Illusion". Control proved to be an illusion indeed, with these different, unrelated, fragments coming together like pieces of a puzzle, creating a mix "like its own cinematic score."
