Greg and Tom interview Steve Bingen Studio Archivist and Hollywood Historian about his two new books. (available on Amazon)The MGM Effect: How a Hollywood Studio Changed the World 50 MGM Films That Transformed Hollywood: Triumphs, Blockbusters, and FiascosWe talk to Steve about the latest book The MGM EffectMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer's emblem, which has opened thousands of movies since 1924, is the most recognized corporate symbol in the world. Not just in the entertainment industry, it should be noted, but of any industry, anywhere, in the history of human civilization. And we talk to him about his next MGM book 50 MGM Films that Transformed Hollywood (available for purchase on November 1st.Movies don't exist in a vacuum. Each MGM movie is a tiny piece of a large, colorful (although often black & white) quilt, with threads tying it into all of the rest of that studio's product, going forward, yes, but also backwards, and horizontally and three dimensionally across its entire landscape. Not necessarily a “best of” compilation, this book discusses the films that for one reason or another (and not all of them good ones) changed the trajectory of MGM and the film industry in general, from the revolutionary use of “Cinerama” in 1962's How the West Was Won to Director Alfred Hitchcock's near extortion of the profits from the 1959 hit thriller North by Northwest.Podcast music:Intro music Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882Movie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production

Greg and Tom interview Justin T. Lee from Gazelle Automations. Justin is the creator of the Star Trek The Next Generation animated sequence in the style of the Star Trek the Animated Series that we discussed in our last episode. We also talk to Justin about his work on new Thunderbirds episodes in the original style using SUPERMARIONATION. Listen in on our lively discussion about Animation Puppetry and film making in general.THUNDERBIRDSGazelle Automations' Lindsay and Justin Lee wore many hats on this production (as did everyone on the crew), including leading the puppetry on these 50th anniversary episodes of the British sci-fi series Thunderbirds for ITV, created with classic Supermarionation techniques used in the 1960s.For their job as puppetry supervisors, they painted, wigged, strung and led the performance of the marionettes, which had to look and move like those from the original 1960s series. For certain characters, work was done many times over to get the squint of an eye or hairline to match the original puppet as closely as possible. The episodes premiered at the British Film Institute in August 2016 and are now streaming on BritBox in the UK. A nationwide Japanese cinema, streaming and Blu-ray release in January 2022 marked the original show's 55th anniversary. For more information about the company continuing to specialize in Supermarionation, visit www.century21films.co.uk.About Gazelle AutomationsProducer/puppeteer Lindsay Lee and VFX artist/puppeteer Justin T. Lee formed Gazelle Automations to create entertainment through the magic of puppetry, model miniatures and animation. From cramped beginnings in the tiny back room of a pizza shop (where pizza deliveries were literally passing through shots), Gazelle Automations now sees projects through from concept and fabrication to production, VFX and finishing. The company's clients and production partners include Anderson Entertainment, the BBC, CBC Kids, Century 21 Films, ITV, Shaftesbury, and TVOKids.Podcast music:Intro music Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882Thunderbirds are Go music Barry GrayStar Trek: The Animated Series Filmation Thunderbirds Creators Gerry & Sylvia AndersonPodcast ©2022 King Dyro ProductionsMovie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production

Tom and Greg interview Donnie Norden and we let him talk about his new book "Hole in the Fence" All about his true adventure diary- growing up on the MGM and Desilu backlots. We also attempt to ask a few questions along the way. Buckle up for a great Hollywood back lot story.Hole in the FenceBy: Donnie NordenAll of the stories in this book were written and lived by me, Donnie Norden. I was lucky enough to grow up in the "Heart of Screenland", which is how Culver City identifies itself. My plan is to chronicle and share my stories from this magical time. My true adventure diary- growing up on the MGM and Desilu backlots. Come trespass with me if you dare, through these enchanting, iconic landscapes. Go where cameras don't show you. It's dangerous for sure. You'll need to climb – very rapidly. You could get chased by Security or Guard dogs or arrested or hurt. Still want to come? Once inside you will never want to leave. My pals and I were soldiers in WWII villages, cowboys on the dusty streets of Tombstone, and pirates on the Bounty. On the rare occasions when it rained, we danced in Gene Kelly's footsteps in Singin' in the Rain. From that first time I poked my 10-year-old head through a hole in the tall fence surrounding the MGM backlot near my house in Culver City, I became intrigued, maybe obsessed. I began a coming-of-age journey through the studio backlots and through movies and TV shows past and present – the history, the romance, the fantasy, and how it all looked real, because it was real.I'll take you from sidewalks used in Singing in the Rain to Atlanta, where Gone With the Wind was filmed. We will hang out in Andy Griffith's house, the Walton's house and Andy Hardy's house. We'll watch as filming takes place on films and TV shows of the 70's from our staked out hidden birds-eye view locations. I'll even take you inside the tree stump used in Hogan's Heroes. We'll visit other studios as well like Warner's and Disney.During this decade-long period of trespassing, my success at eluding the guards caused MGM Studios to hire additional guards, known as “Studio Police”, to catch me… “The Phantom,” as I came to be known!A link to purchase Donnie's book on AmazonPodcast music:Intro and ending music Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882extra musichttps://pixabay.com/per Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license.Podcast ©2022 King Dyro ProductionsMovie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production

In this episode Greg and Tom talk with the Producer, Writer and Director of Chesley Bonestell: A Brush with the Future along with his Co-Producers Ron Miller and Melvin SchuetzWe talk to the three of them about who was Chesley Bonestell and what prompted them to make the film. We learn some interesting facts about Chelsey's influential paintings and talk about the paintings and books he illustrated. Chesley was the artist that brought to life the images of the space program using the concepts of Wernher von Braun's vision of life amongst the planets The creation of Chesley Bonestell: A Brush With The Future was guided by two Bonestell experts – Ron Miller and Melvin Schuetz - and the film includes the perspectives of over twenty individuals who either knew Mr. Bonestell or were influenced by his work.“I didn't know what other worlds looked like until I saw Bonestell's paintings of the solar system.”– Carl SaganChesley Bonestell: A Brush With The Future compellingly reveals a nearly-forgotten artist whose mysterious, almost magical, ability to envision distant worlds inspired generations to reach for the stars. Often compared to a twentieth-century da Vinci, this first-ever film about Bonestell explores the life and works of an artist whose influence and timeless imagery are regarded by many as unparalleled. This documentary was produced by award-winning filmmaker Douglass M. Stewart, Jr. and Co-Produced by Ron Miller, co-author of the Hugo Award-winning book, The Art of Chesley Bonestell, and Melvin Schuetz, author of A Chesley Bonestell Space Art Chronology.https://www.chesleybonestell.com/Podcast music:ending music Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882Intro musichttps://pixabay.com/https://cdn.pixabay.com/download/audio/2020/10/26/audio_f906b5e5f1.mp3per Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license.Podcast ©2021 King Dyro ProductionsMovie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production
Greg and Tom interview Motion Picture unit still photographer Clay Enos about his work with Director Zack Snyder on "Watchman", "Justice League", "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", and most recently the Netflix film "Army of the Dead"We talk about Clay's beginnings in motion picture still photography starting with a visit to the set of "300" and how his friendship with Deborah and Zack Snyder shaped the path of his career in photography. We also touch on his travels including a trip from Bogotá Colombia all the way to New York and a photography trip riding around on a Vespa. We also get intimate stories about shooting on "A Star is Born" and how it's difficult to swing a Trident in a bathroom. And exactly why the Van Nuys airport is a movie hotspot. Much to Tom's delight we also hear a funny Halloween story about Gal GadotA little bit about Clay Enos:Clay Enos, despite over a decade of working on blockbuster film sets, refuses to be pigeonholed into any one category of photography. Movie posters, a far-flung non-profit assignment, or a spontaneous portrait on the street, finds Clay consistently capturing moments that feel both real and transcendent. Always spontaneous yet sincere, Clay's unique style shines through his commercial, editorial and personal photographs.Clay enjoys the fast pace of shooting on the fly. His relaxed, jovial style allows him to be creative and resourceful with whatever he is shooting. His recent commercial clients include Warner Bros. and the Bloomberg Foundation. In 2007, film director Zack Snyder hired Clay to document his film adaptation of Watchmen for Warner Bros. That opportunity opened up a world that for the next decade saw him working as a set photographer. His most notable recent films include the Academy Award winning A Star is Born and the upcoming sequel to the critically acclaimed and worldwide blockbuster, Wonder Woman 1984. Tom and Greg discuss some of the most intriguing things (in their minds) of the ways Life imitates Art The alternate earth Designated Survivor is a show where the president incites an attack on congress which results in Congress being destroyed along with the president and that, as new president Keifer Sutherland is forced to deal with the maniacal followers of the dead president, who it turns out is alive and living in Zambia, where he controls a shadow government… Along with some other musings on Star Wars (why a lack of stand up comics in the Star Wars Universe) along with more Trek talk. We also get into the Streaming world Remarking on the mashup of all the trends in streaming movies and tv series — a couple is making a documentary about the latest serial murder (for Netflix) when a teenager shows up who claims to be a hitherto unknown son who is writing a screenplay (for Amazon Prime) about a house is haunted by the ghost of a detective who is seeking to atone for the accidental death of his son that he feels responsible for. And in the end we discover that the couple are ghosts and that the son who popped up unexpectedly is actually the son of the mother and it's a limited series on Apple TV. Movie TriviaGreg and Tom delve into some movie and streaming content trivia in this the last episode of 2020. A year that will go down in both universes as equally bad in multiple ways. Also a fun discussion of radio favorite the short form content of Dick Orkin and his radio series Chickenman a part of both Tom and Greg's formative years in High School.Chickenman's rogues gallery includes the Choker, the Hummer, the Chicken-Plucker, the Dog Lady, Big Clyde Crushman, the Bear Lady, the Very Diabolical Rodney Farber (a childhood playmate who never forgave Benton Harbor for breaking his red wagon one Christmas Day), and the Couple From SHTICK (Secret Henchmen To Injure Crime Killers). Benton Harbor is prone to spoonerisms, such as "I shall not rest while rime runs crampant in the streets of Midland City."Greg first heard Chickenman on the AFRTS radio station in Guantanamo Cuba where I worked as a summer intern 1974 I have my copies on large Ampex Reel to Reel tapes as Tom mentions in the show.Orkin was production director at WCFL in Chicago, IL back in 1967 when he created “The Adventures of Chickenman”, portraying mild-mannered shoe salesman Benton Harbor who would fight crime as “Chickenman”. “He's Everywhere. He's Everywhere!” The series was syndicated to more than 1,500 stations worldwide.A special thanks to Apple music for having all the Chickenman episodes on iTunesPodcast intro music:Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882and a few short pieces in the middle or the end I think somewhere in there.Found on Pixabay Movie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production

Soul Runner released the summer of 2014 Greg and Tom discuss the Feature Film SOUL RUNNER along with other cinematic influences. A wonderful rambling discussion of film and SciFi concepts both real and fantastical. Join your hosts on a seemingly never ending discussion of the practical importance neither of them can fully understand. Michael is in search of his Grandfather who is the creator of the Oswa Drive which is what enables a ship to warp space and travel to the distant stars.Michael starts his search in old New Orleans protected by large flood gates from the risen seas. He consults the Soul Archive a data storage of the thoughts and memories of the dead. Each time he enters a Soul Archive to speak to the dead leads the world within seems calm and quiet. The real world is a full of visual and auditory distractions and seems to grow more complex and a subtle background noise as the story goes on. So that each time he enters the church like confines of the Soul Archives its evident. (Oscar nominated for sound design)Michael is a Sun runner. He races in contests within the solar system in sophisticated ships with modified Oswa drives that let you hang in real space right before the warp is created racing in the outer jovian planets between Jupiter and Neptune. A sublight race with a tricky human controlled flicker of the powerful Oswa engine to keep your ship in real space and go the fastest from Jupiter to Saturn. The races are sponsored by the ship makers and Osaw warp engine makers. As he races, he discovers fluctuations in the Oswa drive that shouldn't be there, and in the final race with his nemesis, loses all power and then miraculously it come back with a surge of energy that can't be explained even by the best Oswa physicists. This is Sean Connery's last movie, NOT the League of Extraordinary Gentleman, as many believe. He plays the grandfather, who we see in various flashbacks, but whose voice Michael thinks he hears from time to time when he is racing.SOUL RUNNER A Universe 2 release of an Oswan Pictures Production with minimal funding from K Mesler partners (so they don't loose their shirts in foreign markets)All rights reserved ©2020 King Dyro Productions Podcast music:Kamihamiha! - Alien Warfare Stems by Kamihamiha (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/Kamihamiha/60882 and a short piece in the middle somewhereThis Tree Guide by JoeBone (c) copyright 2020 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/JoeBone/62314 Movie Reviews and Serious Nonsense is a King Dyro Production
