Today, I'll be speaking with Tom Potter about all of his favorite outdoor adventures in a town you may know as one of the most picturesque Alpine-style villages in the United States, Leavenworth, Washington! I'm very excited for this episode because Leavenworth has always been in the back of my mind as an excellent fit for this podcast, and even more so for one of our holiday episodes. Leavenworth is not only incredibly jam-packed with outdoor activities, it boasts tons of holiday cheer to boot! We will, of course, talk a bit about the holiday season and how it affects and influences this Christmas-loving town. But Tom also does a fantastic job explaining why Leavenworth is so much more than an adorable Bavarian town engulfed in holiday lights! About Tom Potter (Aka: T-Pot) Tom is a local Leavenworth entrepreneur. When he first arrived in the area, he spent several years working in the bars and restaurants throughout the village to fund his recreational habits. During that time, he inadvertently found himself planning vacations for people, so they wouldn't waste a minute of their stay. Eventually, The T-Pot Experience was born, an all-inclusive trip planning service he operates that focuses on bringing you the best of the best of Leavenworth. With this host and concierge service, he helps visitors make the most of their time in the area, specializing in unique experiences based around outdoor recreation, food, wine, and scenery. Learn more about Tom Potter and how to plan Leavenworth excursions with him at thetpotexperience.com. What We Cover in This Episode What makes Leavenworth so picturesque and unique and "the recreation Mecca of Washington." Why people are drawn to Leavenworth for the holidays. A pro tip on the ideal time to see the Leavenworth holiday lights. What time of the year Christmas-town is in full effect. How you can see the Leavenworth lights from your couch. The best and worst times of year to visit Leavenworth. What each season in Leavenworth has to offer visitors. Which part of town is optimal for an Airbnb rental. The best spot in town for coffee and biscuit breakfast sandwiches, and what time you should be there to make sure you get a biscuit. The best spots to ski and snowboard near Leavenworth, and how to fit in a whitewater kayaking adventure on the way back! The best part of the river for a more relaxed inner tube float or standup paddleboarding with incredible views. A fantastic sandwich spot you won't walk away from hungry. The best sausage garden in town to get a bratwurst. All of the incredible professionally maintained mountain biking trail options available in town and a few of Tom's favorites. A historically prominent ski hill area that hosts bikers in the summer and skiers and tubers in the winter. The nordic skiing that is also available in the area. The "buffet of hiking" offered in Leavenworth. Two of my favorite hikes around this area (and one ends at the view seen in the cover image for this podcast!) The optimal spots in town for beer, dinner, and craft cocktails. The music scene in Leavenworth. The best Instagram spot in town. Two underrated spots in town you should be sure not to miss. Quotables "Come to Leavenworth to enjoy the mountains, enjoy the recreation here, get a little taste of Bavaria. It's a unique gem in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains of Eastern Washington. As you pull into town, you'll just be amazed by how they've stuck to the Bavarian theme, and the mountain access is about as good as I've ever experienced." We’re heading back to the archives, this time revisiting my 2006 interview with Steve Hindy, co-founder of Brooklyn Brewery. Steve’s career journey, both as a foreign correspondent before he took the entrepreneurial leap, and as a brewery owner, is the stuff of blockbuster movie fare. After all, being robbed at gunpoint and being threatened by the mob are not problems the average entrepreneur encounters (thankfully!). Steve and his co-founder Tom Potter forged ahead through the ups and downs of the early years, even staring down bankruptcy at one point. But as Steve told me, building a business is like climbing a mountain. You put one foot in front of the other, you do the work everyday, and eventually you get there. In 2003, Steve and Tom sold their beer distributorship for $10 million to focus on the brewery. Since we spoke, Brooklyn Brewery has grown from $12 million to over $50 million in revenue, and it’s become a local institution, committed to investing in and giving back to the community. At the end of 2020, 36 years after convincing his neighbor and homebrew partner to quit his steady job at a bank and join him in starting a brewery, Steve announced his retirement. His story is proof that with grit, determination and a bit of fearlessness, you can turn your passion into a thriving — and thrilling — venture. *** If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Following a baker’s apprenticeship, Tom went to work for a bloke trying to make his way in the pastry business world. Learning from this guy's failures and successes, Tom, at the tender age of just 23, decided to launch his own business. On the way he created a multi-national, multi-million dollar empire. That business ... Eagle Boys Pizza. Watching Eagle Boys peak, Tom turned his attention to the bakery business and created "Crusty Devils Bakeries", which also became hugely successful. He has turned his attention back to the pizza market, though, so watch this space for a new competitor!! Tom shares much of knowledge (in his own pull-no-punches manner) in this interview and on the speaking circuit. He can be contacted via his website, www.tompotterspeaker.com.au NOTE: there is a bit of profanity in this podcast, for those out there with delicate ears!! Please enjoy :)

Welcome to Episode 56 of the RetroWDW Podcast: "Good Neighbors" - We appreciate your support and hope you have been enjoying each and every episode. Be sure to check out some of our previous shows! Comments & Corrections Jake Nelson wrote in about a possible hidden skeleton somewhere inside Catastrophe Canyon. We give our take on this one from the old days of MGM. Reuben wrote us asking about the old shop to the left right inside the entrance to the Disney-MGM Studios. He is referring to Sid Cahuenga's of course! We discuss this store and the various items we have seen there over the years. Joe Barlow wrote in about some backlot vehicles, mainly the Hardcastle and McCormick car. We misidentified it as a Lamborghini, but Joe tells us it really is a kit car from back then. Listener Mail The mailbag is full and we love that! Every month, you can possibly get on the show, so be sure to write to us at podcast@retrowdw.com. Tom Potter is our first letter and it is all about time capsules. Tom brings up the opening of Coronado Springs and how they placed a capsule back in 1997. Next up is Ron. He asks us about trucks being buried at the Magic Kingdom from way back during the late 60s construction. We hear about some trucks out in the lakes, but as far as the parks, we aren't really sure... John wrote us and has been a binge listener since August. He is curious about the EPCOT Center pavilion logos and who designed them and why. This is right in How's wheel-well and is super fun to learn about. Finally, we got a tweet from Michael, giving some major props on the upcoming Horizons release we have coming. Todd gives us the updates next... Audio Rewind Our audio rewind this month is El Rio del Tiempo - Thank you for all the guesses and emails! We have a winner! Congratulations Jimmy Tucker! - you won the book by Marty Sklar from Brian. If you think you know the answer to this month's audio rewind, email us! contest@retrowdw.com - This month, the winner will be getting 3 books from author Christopher Smith - All entries due 4/15/2020 and a random winner will be selected. Main Topic This month, our main topic is Good Neighbors mostly focusing on Sea World. The early days of Lake Buena Vista had just one theme park so people needed more to do and more places to stay. A few years back, we discussed some of the good neighbor hotels and that program back on Episode 39. Brian leads us this month through some of the history and how Sea World got it's start. This includes California, Ohio and the other locations as this is all an important part of the story. We walk you through every attraction through the years with personal experiences and also lots of great memories. This includes things like the Dolphin Feeding Pool, original Whale and Dolphin Stadium, Fountain Fantasy, Water Skiing and so much more. The construction history is also discussed, which has changed quite a bit over the years. This wouldn't be an episode of the RetroWDW Podcast without some food discussions. We take a deep-dive into the Hawaiian Punch Village along with some very detailed discussion about 'Hula Pie'. If you have ever been to Sea World since it opened, this episode will for sure take you back and also give you a look at how it has changed over the years. We hope you enjoy this look at one of our favorite 'Good Neighbors'. 2020: The Year of Film To make sure you are the first to know when items are released, subscribe to us on YouTube. Be sure to click the notification bell too, that way you are alerted when we post. Finally, be sure to check out Vimeo if that is your thing, as we will post there as well. This past month we have posted a great resort tour from The Disney Channel, The original DVC Resort Tour, and a great Innoventions commercial from the mid-90s. As a bonus, to accompany this episode we have released a great new video from 1980 Sea World. This was shot on Super8 with sound! You are going to love this vintage footage that looks amazing - especially the Whale & Dolphin show. Next Month Join us next time for Episode 57, which we have not fully planned out, but you won't want to miss it Thanks for joining us!

Allen Katz is one of the world's leading experts on distilled spirits and cocktails. He founded the Brooklyn-based New York Distilling Company in 2011 with Tom Potter, and has been at the forefront of the resurgence of rye whiskey in the United States. He's even helped to create a new category of the stuff - 'Empire Rye' - which requires 75% of the mash bill to be rye grain grown in New York. We were dying to ask Allen: why is he so enamoured with whiskeys? Are they increasing in popularity? Does he have any advice for the plethora of young craft distillers entering the market today? How is the Shanty Bar, which is attached to the NY Distillery, experimenting with the company's famous spirits? Allen is absolutely brimming with valuable knowledge and expertise. Then, our Free Pour Five segment features young gun Ollie Margan, a 26-year-old multi-venue owner from Adelaide who's already making waves in the industry. The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with legendary Detroit rock powerhouse Thomas Jackson Potter! Jack White fans know Tom for many projects over the years, such as membership in The Dirtbombs, prominent inclusion on Jack's Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation and most notably as the frontman for Detroit's quintessential two-piece rock group BANTAM ROOSTER. Like the Flat Duo Jets before them, Bantam Rooster blazed the trail for two-piece potential in the rock world, and paved the way for The White Stripes in the years that followed. Tom's electrifying guitar sound is the perfect blend of high-energy rock and carefully crafted melody, and his extraordinary talents can be heard on countless records from the 80's, 90's and beyond - including the now-classic Ultraglide in Black LP from The Dirtbombs and Bantam's 2000 Sympathy release F*ck All Y'All. As friend and collaborator with artists such as Jack White, Mick Collins and Jim Diamond, Tom helped define the Detroit rock sound during the turn of the millennium and continues to push musical boundaries to this day with innovative groups like Seger Liberation Army and Choke Chains. We here at the Third Men podcast would like to thank Tom for joining us for one of the most fun, lively discussions we've ever had on the show and hope everyone has as much fun listening as we had interviewing! Download the MP3. Being robbed at gun point and being threatened by the mob are not problems the average entrepreneur encounters. Steve Hindy faced these problems and more, but what concerned him most was the fate of his brewery. Steve started the Brooklyn Brewery with Tom Potter. Steve was a journalist and foreign correspondent. Tom was a banker. Neither knew a thing about starting, much less running, a brewery.
