Beer Me!
Beer Mysticism: Introspection in the face of the New Year

Beer Me!

There is a certain level of magic behind beer, in the fermentation alone. Those little yeasty cells are working hard to convert sugar to alcohol and CO2, but what else? Disco parties? Courtney Iseman, a Brookyn-based beer journalist, has recently published a zine: "Beer Tarot: Pulling Cards, Pouring Beer, & Discovering Self." She suggests adding a little mysticism, a little magic to the consumption side of beer; through Tarot. In this episode of Beer Me, she explains that while the practice of Tarot has been around for centuries, it has become more popular in recent years. Tarot has risen since the pandemic, "not as much as sourdough" Iseman jokes. People seek more introspective moments and creative outlets, and tarot answers both needs. To be clear, tarot is less about predicting the future and more about setting an intention, for example, "getting a vibe for the day", Iseman explains. (like bones or no bones, RIP Noodle). In her zine, Iseman dives into the history of Tarot and where it's surfacing in beer. For example, EJ Nunns & Max Sherman at Trve Brewing in Denver have designed a custom tarot deck. (it's stunning). What's in the cards? Maybe they suggest you try a new beer or branch out. Or they might suggest to stick to your favorite. Check out this zine for more details! Shoutouts: Trve Brewing, Brasserie l'Ermitage, Joanne Love, Noodle and the No Bones DayMUSIC CREDIT: The following music was used for this media project:Music: Funky Intro 31 by TaigaSoundProdFree download: https://filmmusic.io/song/9552-funky-intro-31License (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

In just a few days, it will have been one year since friend of the show, tour manager extraordinaire, and front of house master John Hopkins passed away. I don't need to state again the impact a person like John Hopkins can have on a community, not to mention the individual person. All you have to do is ask someone who knew John the way we all did. Back in April, I recorded an episode with Jason Parris of Wake Brewing, which would not have happened as it did without John's ability to link us up. No formalities, no legalities, no bull shit. It was just, you guys like doom metal and craft beer, be friends. We wound up speaking not only about John's passing, but two other key members of the metal and craft beer scene who also passed away: Barnaby Struve, previously of 3 Floyds and many others, and Brandon Gay of TRVE Brewing. While I never had the opportunity to meet with either, it's clear they have left behind a legacy of their own just like John. I opted to hold onto that part of the conversation between Jason and myself for a more appropriate time and that time is now, unfortunately. The wound is still fresh, but we have to remember that people like John, Barnaby, and Brandon don't come around often and when they do, it's their selfless nature that defines them. It's a trait that I would believe most of the human race lacks and those moments when you do encounter it, it hits you in a very specific, special way and you probably won't be forgetting it anytime soon. To coincide with this memorial, Diary of Doom has put together a special shirt in memory of John. When I first spoke with John, he remarked on referring to stoner metal as “burrito metal” back in the day. It seemed like the perfect image to memorialize him in. Thanks to Made In Brooklyn Silkscreeners and artist Corey Largent (insaneclampasta), we were able to do just that. A number have already been distributed to friends and family, but if you would like one, they will be listed on the Diary of Doom Bandcamp page. All of the proceeds will be going to Daphneyland Basset Hound Rescue that John was a fan of. Tracks featured are "The Clarity" by Sleep off The Sciences and "Space Rock" by Bongzilla off Weedsconsin

In the post for our previous podcast, we had to work to make a somewhat vague connection between the beer we were trying (Surfari IPA) and music (Surfaris, the band). For this episode, the connection will not require as much creative license, but there is still some mystery involved. The beverage we will be sharing with you is Where I Live, a mixed culture sour ale. It is a collaboration beer from two Colorado breweries, New Belgium (Ft. Collins) and TRVE (Denver). It features a base of 100% Colorado grown malt and was finished with Colorado whole flower lavender. As for the music connection, New Belgium’s website says that it was named after a song by a Flemish metal band. We attempted to find the song by doing a little internet research but came up empty. If anyone out there can share the song with us so that we can satisfy our curiosity, we would appreciate it. What did we think? What do you think? The festival graciously asked us to host a talk at each session that would be free for fest goers to attend. We decided to do Brewery Focus chats where we interviewed three breweries pouring at the festival that we thought stood out.
We chose Salopian Brewery of Shrewsbury, Young Master Brewery of Hong Kong and Trve Brewing Co. of Denver. The first talk featured is with Wilf Nelson, Managing Director of Salopian Brewery. We discuss the longevity of the brewery and how they have changed and adapted to the changes in the UK beer scene over the last two decades, amongst other things. http://www.salopianbrewery.co.uk/ Our second talk was with Jess, Tom and Rohit of Young Master Brewery. They tell us about growing the brewery in Hong Kong and how craft beer in Asia has grown with them over the past few years. We also hear how they make their beer unique to where they are from. https://youngmasterales.com/ The third and final talk is with Erin and Nick of Trve Brewing, who talk to us about being known for mixed ferm beer, but creating wonderful clean beer. Including the 'Cold' pils we drank during the chat which they also touch upon. Nick and Erin also chat about their unique taproom and how music has inspired there look and artwork. https://www.trvebrewing.com/ Thanks to the breweries for talking to us and the festival for the opportunity. Happy Thursday to all my party people. Have you ever tried a Barrel Aged Sour Ale? Well neither have we, which is why we were intrigued! This week, Ryan and Alex delve into the appropriately named, “Life's Trade” by TRVE Brewing Company! If you consider yourself a Metal-head, well then hell, TRVE is the brewery for you. They pride themselves on promoting the Metal-head counter-culture, and not taking themselves too seriously. Onto the beer! Since this beer is aged in wine oak barrels, it has a cloudy yellow, chardonnay-like pour and a bright taste. Flavors include that of lemon, vanilla, pineapple, wheat, and even an umami or savory hint to it. Lastly, because of the reduced oxygen exposure, the tartness of the beer is mitigated which in my opinion, is a really EXCELLENT touch. If you know how Ryan and Alex episodes go, you know that things get weird really quick. This week we discuss having a girlfriend that insists on having the same haircut as you, that Sir Paul McCartney actually BREWS his own beer, and how to deal with an ex who is currently dating your best friend. (Or maybe now ex best friend?) So grab a brew, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer! For anyone who's gone brewery hopping in Denver, CO, you know how lively and enjoyable that experience can be in one of the country's pre-eminent beer towns. Lots of IPAs, outdoorsiness, and that sort of early 2000s don't-try-too-hard aesthetic in the form of picnic tables and raw wood and concrete that passes for authenticity unquestioned among craft enthusiasts. And let's face it: some of it's real, some of it's not. So when TRVE Brewing Co. brewing popped up on the scene, it was a violation of the Mile High City's Pleasantville-like beer scene in more ways than one.  Founder Nick Nunns was making yeast-driven beers with a heavy metal theme in a neighborhood far from the sparkle of Denver's eye. Much has changed since then, but mostly in ways that continue to put TRVE at the edge of a still-somewhat-monoculture beer scene, as good as it is, with a few great exceptions.  And in this next phase? Nunns is going to make things even weirder.

The 4B Flight, Episode 3 – Today on The 4B Flight, a collaboration beer from Prairie Ales and Trve Brewing. We are back with the third of six episodes for this week’s mini-episode-extravaganza that we call The 4B Flight. In case you missed what’s going on here, we’re releasing a new mini-episode of Four Brewers everyday for a week. Why? Because we like you. Prairie and Trve Collaboration Beer Today’s beer is a special treat from Prairie Artisan Ales, made with their brothers and sisters in beer and metal (?), Trve Brewing out of Colorado. Coming in at 6.66% ABV (of course), this sour is a red ale made with black salt, peaches, brettanomyces and all kinds of other fun stuff. It’s quite interesting, and we all have differing opinions of the beer, and interesting beer makes for a hopefully interesting show. Tune in tomorrow for the next beer in The 4B Flight!  BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
