Fundraising with Precision: Inside Optimizing Sales at LAB Quantitative Strategies with Shane McCarthy

Dakota Rainmaker Podcast

In this episode of the Rainmaker Podcast, host Gui Costin welcomes Shane McCarthy, Managing Director at LAB Quantitative Strategies, for a thoughtful and practical conversation on building a lean, high-performing fundraising function in a data-driven investment firm. With over 25 years in the investment industry across operations, risk, product development, and portfolio management, Shane brings a rare full-stack view of capital formation.Shane shares how LAB QS, a $1.8 billion multi-strategy hedge equity manager based in Denver, is built around a risk-first, liquid, and return-per-unit-of-risk mindset. Originally spun out from one of the largest family offices in the U.S., LAB QS retains a strong cultural alignment with high-net-worth and family office investors, with growing interest from RIAs and small institutions. Their hedged equity strategy is structured to smooth volatility, limit drawdowns, and complement broader asset allocations. The business development team is lean—just two people—but Shane emphasizes that LAB QS operates with a firmwide fundraising mentality, supported by every department, from operations to compliance. The sales strategy is guided from the executive committee level, with clear goals and aligned resource allocation. Everyone has defined roles, responsibilities, and expectations, which ensures a unified commercial mindset across the firm.McCarthy stresses that face-to-face interaction and trust-building are still paramount in capital raising, especially in today's saturated and competitive investment landscape. While Zoom helps with efficiency, nothing replaces the relationship-building power of sitting across from an investor.LAB QS's tech-forward approach is another key strength. They rely heavily on Salesforce for CRM, integrated with Dakota Marketplace for seamless prospecting and pipeline management. With support from a 10-person tech team, LAB QS uses proprietary tools to customize analytics and automate reporting, enabling more effective and informed client interactions.Culturally, LAB QS embraces a challenge process, encouraging employees at all levels to contribute ideas and question assumptions. This openness fosters humility, collaboration, and innovation—qualities that Shane believes are essential for long-term success. To young professionals, Shane offers grounded advice: embrace the long game, expect rejection, and focus on knowing your client deeply. His leadership and experience reinforce a message that great sales organizations are built on cross-functional collaboration, disciplined execution, and the humility to keep learning.Tired of chasing outdated leads? Book a demo to see how Dakota Marketplace simplifies your fundraising process with accurate, up-to-date investor data.

Black metal. But make it western. We welcome frontman Shane McCarthy from Colorado-based black metal outfit, Wayfarer. In this episode of IUF, Shane talks about the 11-plus-year journey for the band, leading up to their fifth studio album, titled “American Gothic.” Powerful riffing, bleak melodic sensibilities and visceral songwriting have cemented Wayfarer as one of the modern innovators of the genre. Black metal may have been born in the Scandinavian countries of Northern Europe and the UK, but Wayfarer have now put in a twist of their own from the Western part of the globe. “American Gothic” showcases this creativity in tremendous fashion. In addition, Shane also talks about his love for Metallica and his first-ever experience in seeing the thrash legends in the flesh, and last but not least, his new chapter in life as a newlywed. Hi, I'm Shane McCarthy from the International Institute of Digital Marketing. In March 2020, the world entered lockdowns forcing many businesses to close or move online. Having an online presence is essential when it comes to building your brand & reaching your customers Luckily there are simple tactics that you can use to build your online presence. 1. Brand Story It is important to connect with your target audience and form a distinct image in the mind of your customers. Developing your brand is about making yourself more memorable than your competition. 2. Optimize & Build an SEO-Friendly Website People have short attention spans, so if your website is unattractive, slow, or confusing to use, they're going to leave and check out your competition. Using keywords will also boost your SEO score for searches. 3. Local Search Marketing This is about putting your business on the map in local searches when customers are searching for a business like yours. This is especially important with the pandemic as recent surveys have shown people are more likely to shop locally. 4. Social Media Marketing This is one of the cheapest and most effective forms of marketing that you can invest in & provides a great opportunity to connect with customers new & old. 5. Invest in ads Organic traffic can take some time to build but PPC ads that target buyers are a great investment for small businesses to increase awareness or drive traffic to their website. 6. E-mail Marketing An E-mail has been around so long it might feel stale and not worth your time but this isn't true at all. Capturing people's email when they're on your website by offering discounts, competitions & newsletters of new products can help bring back a lost shopping cart and create great relationships with your customers. 7. Build your reputation, Be engaging It's massively important to be responsive and engaging to your customers when they have a question or complaint that needs answering. What up podcasters! I hope you are enjoying the ride. This episode is our favorite thus far!! The reason being, we had our first ever interview and it was with our great friend, Shane McCarthy. We've known Shane since he was 10 years old growing up in Little Silver, NJ. Rick umpired a lot of Shane's baseball games as a kid. Shane attended Rumson Fair Haven H.S. and was a star pitcher there. After overcoming elbow surgery his Junior year, he earned an academic/athletic scholarship to Seton Hall University. His highlight of college was pitching a PERFECT GAME against LIU his sophomore year. There have only been 23 Perfect Games pitched in MLB and 30 in Division 1 baseball history. To give you an idea of how big of a deal this is - there have been 218,000 games played in MLB over the past 150 years and maybe the same in college baseball. If you take 53 and divide it by let's call it 400,000 games that means Shane McCarthy has accomplished something that only 0.00012679% of people have ever done. He's in an elite class of pitchers and this career is just getting started. Enjoy the pod and Shane's underdog story - we sure did!!  --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/appSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thebrothersbrandt/support
