If stars had trophy cases, Vega’s would be packed. The leading light of Lyra was the first star other than the Sun to have its picture taken, the first to have its spectrum taken, and the first with a published measurement of its distance. Vega is impressive in many ways. It’s more than twice the size and mass of the Sun, and about 50 times the Sun’s brightness. It’s encircled by a wide belt of dust, produced by collisions between big chunks of ice and rock. In about 12,000 years, it’ll serve as the Pole Star. And in about 200,000 years it’ll become the brightest star in the night sky. Vega first had its picture taken in 1850. In 1872, an astronomer took a picture of its spectrum, spreading its light into its individual wavelengths. A spectrum reveals a star’s composition, motion, and much more. In 1838, Russian astronomer Friedrich von Struve published Vega’s parallax – the first publication for any star. He plotted its position when Earth was on opposite sides of the Sun. That revealed a tiny shift against the background of more-distant objects. That shift revealed a distance of about 26 light-years – just one light-year off the modern measurement. Vega is low in the east-northeast at nightfall and climbs high overhead during the night. It’s the fifth-brightest star in the night sky, so you can’t miss it – a beautiful star with a case full of trophies. Script by Damond Benningfield

Russian astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm von Struve discovered and catalogued thousands of binary stars — pairs of stars that are gravitationally bound to each other. But a system that he first saw in 1829 was so striking that he gave it a special name: Pulcherrima — “the most beautiful.” It honors the contrasting colors of the two stars. One looks pale orange, while the other looks blue-white or even green. The system is also known by an even older name: Izar, “the girdle,” because it represents the middle of Boötes, the herdsman. Regardless of what you call it, most skywatchers agree with Struve: Seen through a telescope, the pair is quite beautiful. The orange star is a giant. It's burned through its original hydrogen fuel and is nearing the end of its life. As a result, it's puffed up to many times the diameter of the Sun. That “puffiness” caused the star's outer layers to cool, which is why it looks orange. Its companion is much hotter, so it shines almost pure white. It looks blue or green only when it's compared to the orange star. It's less massive than the companion, so it has a lot longer to go before it reaches its own “giant” phase. Boötes is in the east as night falls. Look for its brightest star, brilliant yellow-orange Arcturus. Izar is the first noticeable star to the left of Arcturus. To the eye alone, it looks like a single point of light. But a telescope reveals the true nature of this colorful duo. Script by Damond Benningfield

The Ming-Qing transition was an extremely chaotic time in Chinese history. Millions died of warfare, pestilence, or starvation, and millions more were displaced. Yet despite all these issues, this was also a period of cultural production, which has often been overlooked as people focus on the wars, famine, and climate change that pervaded this period. In this episode, I speak with Professor Lynn Struve about the literary pursuits of men and women and the overall intellectual landscape in the Late Ming and the Early Qing Contributors Lynn Struve Lynn Struve is an emeritus professor of history and an emeritus professor of East Asian languages and cultures at Indiana University Bloomington. Her research interests include traditional Chinese history, 17th century political and intellectual history, East-West comparative thought, and Chinese reference and source materials. Over the course of her career, she has published widely, particularly on the period of the Ming-Qing transition, and has received numerous awards. Her representative works include Voices from the Ming-Qing Cataclysm: China in Tigers' Jaws, The Southern Ming, 1644-1662, The Ming-Qing Conflict: A Historiography and Source Guide, and, more recently, The Dreaming Mind and the End of the Ming World, which was recently awarded best overall book in Ming studies published between 2019 and 2022 by the Society for Ming Studies. Yiming Ha Yiming Ha is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His current research is on military mobilization and state-building in China between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing on how military institutions changed over time, how the state responded to these changes, the disconnect between the center and localities, and the broader implications that the military had on the state. His project highlights in particular the role of the Mongol Yuan in introducing an alternative form of military mobilization that radically transformed the Chinese state. He is also interested in military history, nomadic history, comparative Eurasian state-building, and the history of maritime interactions in early modern East Asia. He received his BA from UCLA and his MPhil from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The fall of Beijing in 1644 did not immediately put an end to the Ming Dynasty. For almost half a century, Ming pretenders and loyalists in the south warred with the Manchus. One of the most prominent Ming loyalist factions was the Zheng family regime based in Fujian and Taiwan. Founded by the pirate-merchant Zheng Zhilong, the enterprise reached new heights under his son Zheng Chenggong, better known as Koxinga, who is best known for driving the Dutch out of Taiwan. This regime carried out the pro-Ming, anti-Manchu banner until it was finally defeated by the Qing in 1683. Joining me to talk about this fascinating regime is Professor Xing Hang of Brandeis University. He will cover the history of the regime from its rise to its fall, how it became so powerful, how and why Koxinga took over Taiwan, as well as what Ming loyalism meant to the Zhengs. Contributors Xing Hang Professor Xing Hang is an Associate Professor of History at Brandeis University and a scholar of China and of the East Asian maritime world. His first project is about the Zheng organization in Taiwan, its role in seventeenth century East Asian maritime trade, and how it defined its legitimacy, and he has published extensively on the topic. His research on this topic has also greatly informed his more recent project, which is on Chinese communities in Southeast Asia from the seventeenth century to the twenty-first centuries.
Few observatory directors have had as colorful a life as Otto Struve. By the time he was 24 years old, he'd survived having his horse shot from under him, had almost been hit by lightning, and almost starved as a war refugee. Struve was born 125 years ago, in Ukraine — the fourth generation of an astronomical dynasty. He first accompanied his father to an observatory at age eight, and by 10 he was helping take observations. In 1916, Struve joined the Russian army. He was sent to the Turkish front. His horse was shot from under him, and another bullet zipped through his coat sleeve. Struve returned to his studies after the war. During the Russian revolution, though, he joined the White Army and fought against the communists. Afterward, he made his way to Turkey as a refugee. He spent a long, cold winter there, barely finding enough to eat. In the spring, he went to Constantinople, where he got by with odd jobs. He was a lumberjack for a while, and was almost struck by lightning. By chance, Struve received a letter from the director of the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory offering him a job. It took some doing, but Struve made his way to the U.S. in 1921. Over the following decade, Struve worked his way up, becoming director of Yerkes in 1932. That same year, he also became the founding director of the brand-new McDonald Observatory in Texas — a new chapter in the colorful life of Otto Struve. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
Otto Struve knew an opportunity when he saw one. The University of Chicago astronomer knew that his institution needed a big new telescope to supplement the 40-inch refractor at Chicago's Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin. Yet Chicago didn't have the money to pay for one. When William J. McDonald left his fortune to the University of Texas to build an observatory, Struve suggested a partnership: Texas would provide the observatory, and Chicago would provide the astronomers. Texas agreed, and the two universities signed a 30-year deal. Struve, recently promoted to the directorship of Yerkes, would also direct the new McDonald Observatory. Struve was born 125 years ago today, in Ukraine. He was a fourth-generation astronomer. He served in the Russian army, then was offered a job with the University of Chicago. Struve arrived in 1921, earned a Ph.D., and worked his way up through the astronomy program. Struve oversaw design and construction of McDonald Observatory's 82-inch telescope — the second-largest telescope in the world. It was dedicated in 1939. Struve spent long hours using the telescope to study the stars, while building up the Chicago astronomy faculty. Conflicts with his young scientists eventually led to Struve's resignation. Yet his name continues to resound in West Texas: McDonald Observatory named the 82-inch telescope in his honor. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

For a long time, Ray Huang's influential book 1587: A Year of No Significance has colored our imagination of the Late Ming, painting the Ming as a state that was stagnant and in decline. Traditional historiography usually focuses on the poor finances of the Ming state, its inability to pay troops, its poor military performance against the peasant rebels and the Manchus, and its factionalism. While all these are true to an extent, more recent scholarships have also uncovered another side to the late Ming - one of military success and military innovation. Professor Kenneth Swope, an expert on Ming military history and author of numerous monographs and articles on the topic, joins us to talk about these new narratives of the late Ming's successes and failures. Contributors Professor Kenneth Swope Professor Kenneth Swope is a Professor of History & Senior Fellow of the Dale Center for the Study of War & Society at the University of Southern Mississippi. He is an expert on Chinese military history, particularly Ming military history and has published numerous monographs, articles, and book chapters on the topic. His major publications include A Dragon's Head and a Serpent's Tail: Ming China and the First Great East Asian War, 1592-1598, The Military Collapse of China's Ming Dynasty, 1618-1644, and On the Trail of the Yellow Tiger: War, Trauma, and Social Dislocation in Southwest China During the Ming-Qing Transition. In addition, he serves as the book review editor for The Journal of Chinese Military History and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Chinese Military History Society. Many people celebrate their birthdays under the stars. But when Ambrose Swasey turned 89, he celebrated under a machine his company was building to study the stars — the first telescope for McDonald Observatory. Swasey was born 175 years ago today, in a small town in New Hampshire. He quickly showed a knack for designing and building things. As a teenager, he went to work in a machine shop, where he met Worcester Warner. They formed their own company, Warner & Swasey, which they soon moved to Cleveland. The company mainly built machine tools. But both founders were interested in astronomy, so they started building telescopes and their protective domes as well — work that made the company well known. Warner and Swasey built a big new telescope for Lick Observatory in California, and a bigger one for the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory — still the biggest telescope of its type in the world. In 1923, Chicago astronomer Otto Struve named an asteroid discovered with the Yerkes telescope in Swasey's honor. Later, Struve became the Yerkes director. And when Chicago signed a deal with the University of Texas to operate its new McDonald Observatory, Struve became its director as well. He hired Warner & Swasey to build it, including its first big telescope — the second-largest in the world. The telescope has moved down the rankings since then. But it's still in service — one of the legacies of Ambrose Swasey. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
In just a few days, it will have been one year since friend of the show, tour manager extraordinaire, and front of house master John Hopkins passed away. I don't need to state again the impact a person like John Hopkins can have on a community, not to mention the individual person. All you have to do is ask someone who knew John the way we all did. Back in April, I recorded an episode with Jason Parris of Wake Brewing, which would not have happened as it did without John's ability to link us up. No formalities, no legalities, no bull shit. It was just, you guys like doom metal and craft beer, be friends. We wound up speaking not only about John's passing, but two other key members of the metal and craft beer scene who also passed away: Barnaby Struve, previously of 3 Floyds and many others, and Brandon Gay of TRVE Brewing. While I never had the opportunity to meet with either, it's clear they have left behind a legacy of their own just like John. I opted to hold onto that part of the conversation between Jason and myself for a more appropriate time and that time is now, unfortunately. The wound is still fresh, but we have to remember that people like John, Barnaby, and Brandon don't come around often and when they do, it's their selfless nature that defines them. It's a trait that I would believe most of the human race lacks and those moments when you do encounter it, it hits you in a very specific, special way and you probably won't be forgetting it anytime soon. To coincide with this memorial, Diary of Doom has put together a special shirt in memory of John. When I first spoke with John, he remarked on referring to stoner metal as “burrito metal” back in the day. It seemed like the perfect image to memorialize him in. Thanks to Made In Brooklyn Silkscreeners and artist Corey Largent (insaneclampasta), we were able to do just that. A number have already been distributed to friends and family, but if you would like one, they will be listed on the Diary of Doom Bandcamp page. All of the proceeds will be going to Daphneyland Basset Hound Rescue that John was a fan of. Tracks featured are "The Clarity" by Sleep off The Sciences and "Space Rock" by Bongzilla off Weedsconsin

To executives, new features mean more money, but even if you had terrific features, they wouldn't be worth a thing if they only worked half the time. Reliability isn't something you want to put off until later after the project has grown, it will save you a lot of time and money if you factor it in from day one. Everyone has adapted to a speedy internet these days. Users leave if the site is taking more than even a few seconds to load. It's easy to get overly focused on features while losing the context of the overall application. The first and foremost solid you can do future you is to keep things as simple as possible. Never get overly complicated, that's where you run into scaling troubles. Complexity also causes significant headaches when bringing other people on. In addition to keeping complexity low, make sure documentation gets written and that it's kept up to date. A solution that Molly's company has put in place to keep the docs fresh is to give every document an expiration date three months out from when it gets written. When someone references the docs, they check if it's past the expiration date, if it is they go through and make sure that the information is still current, and afterward extending the expiration date another three months. Transcript "Build Performant And Reliable Applications With Molly Struve" Transcript Quotes "To me, a site reliability engineer is a software engineer, but with their focus on performance and reliability." "So, it's a dev, but they've got a little bit of something extra in there that just helps them kind of step back and look at the whole system and ensure that it's performing and reliable." "There's only so much you can just attribute to the black box. Sometimes you actually got to go in there and figure out what's going on." "You can have all the great features in the world, but if they're only working 50% of the time, none of your clients are going to be happy." "A lot of times, if you're just focused on just the feature you're building, you'll lose the context of the overall application." They discuss the usefulness of IOPs for those who have potential to recover without going inpatient on a residential unit. They also discuss the need to address trauma and other factors when recovering from an addiction, the importance of not judging addicts or assuming they inherently have more character defects than the rest of the population, and more. Don't forget to listen to all the episodes from this series, and join Cinthia and Greg for the wrap-up.
