This might be a podcast-first: seven custom-designed and printed glasses just for this episode. Glassware is arguably the most important element of craft beer as it's the actual vessel through which we get to experience it, yet it rarely obtains the shine it so glaringly deserves. Tonight, we fix that. Dan of Zenan, the largest glassware company in Canada, and Adin of Henderson Brewing, join Cee and Nate to chat about the importance of glassware across the board, Zenan's decorating capabilities, how they work closely with the craft brewing industry to get them what they need (even in a tight turnaround), the importance of relationships with breweries and suppliers, the different types of printing on glassware, why different glasses work with specific beer styles, festival glassware, the upcoming Henderson "Toronto In 100 Beers" book, and why there aren't as many "flagship" glasses these days. They get into some gems from Henderson, in the custom-made BAOS glassware (thanks to Dan!): Rush Canadian Light Lager, The Amazing Randi Hazy Pale Ale (Ides 99), Radicle Hopfenweisse, Rube Goldbeer Belgian Tripel, Stock Ale (Ides 100), X-1 (Rush Xanabrew II) Belgian-Style Black Ale, and Best Amber Ale. This was spectacular - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Kingston, ON has a fantastically bright craft beer scene, and no brewery has taken that more literally than Daft. Co-Founder Adam and brewer Rich joined Cee and Nate to chat about what's changed since we spoke to them last in late 2021, the move to cans from bottles, aging their dark beers, how amazing West Coast IPAs are, where the Kingston beer scene is at, the challenges of distributing beer, their LCBO switch out, and some of the stories behind their beer names. They got into a gang of Daft brews, including Barenaked Light Lager, Thirst Trap DDH IPA, Day Off Strawberry, Peach & Cream IPA, Throwing Shade Black Lager, Down By The River West Coast IPA, and Dad Bod DIPA. This was super fun, cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

Overcoming the challenges of a difficult childhood, she found peace and healing on the rivers, solidifying her commitment to sharing this remarkable experience with others. Now a professional angler & fishing guide based in the Roaring Fork Vally in Colorado, Shyanne considers the river her office; introducing people from around the world to the joy of fly fishing on Colorado's renowned Gold Medal rivers. As a female angler in a predominantly male industry, she has faced and conquered numerous obstacles, blazing a trail for future generations of women in fly fishing. Through her "Ladies On The Fly" clinics, she empowers women, children, and her community, inspiring them to embrace the sport. Her influence extends beyond her local area, as she organizes trips and events globally, encouraging aspiring anglers to pursue their passion.Join us as we delve into Shyanne's extraordinary story of resilience and determination. In April Bob and I start dissecting some of our favorite styles, lagers. In this episode we dive into the American Light Lager. A beer style that is perfect for cutting the grass, deck sitting, or watching any sporting event, the American light lager is pale, bright, effervescent, and just down right tasty. Sit back, crack a cold one, and listen as we pontificate on perhaps the most popular style of beer in all American folklore. Style examples: 1. Yuengling – Light Lager 2. Boston Beer Company – Sam ‘76 3. Great Lakes Brewing Company – Rally Drum Lager ABV: 2.8-4.2% IBUs: 8-12 Color: 2-3 Serving Temp: Go cold — anywhere in the 33- to 40-degree range is suitable for macro lagers. This is around your average refrigerator temperature, with 33 degrees, near freezing, on the low end. Your sweet spot is really between 36 and 38 degrees, which is the temperature of most draft beer systems. Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI Drink representative selection of the week: Brew Kettle – Major Lager 4.5% and 10 IBU Beer as described by brewer: A traditional Light American Lager with a crisp taste, a slight bite of American hops, a clean & refreshing finish. Now that Rochester, NY is our new US backyard, we figured we needed to shine some light on the exceptional craft beer scene out there and who better to tell that story than journalist Will Cleveland. Widely renowned in the area for his work at the Democrat & Chronicle newspaper, Will has been a friend of the show for like half a decade but this is his first appearance on the pod. Cee and Will got into the rich beer history of Rochester, his role in helping Other Half open in East Bloomfield, the impact of the legendary Tap & Mallet pub (RIP) and Genesee Brewery, a tease of the impeccable lineup for the Rochester Real Beer Expo in June that he's curating, and why he's loving his Substack newsletter. They got into four amazing beers - Genesee Light, Swiftwater IPA, Other Half Gouda and Mortalis Gemini (Tangerine, Strawberry + Waffle Cone). So many gems here, cheers! There's almost nothing we love more here at BAOS than a successful contractor-to-brick-and-mortar story, so this chat with Griffin Data of Newark Brewing was right up our alley. We connected with Griffin back in 2018/2019 when they were budding contractors, and now they've opened their own brewpub in Beamsville, ON, deep in Niagara wine country. Cee and Griffin spoke about their journey from being contractors to now offering contract services to up-and-coming breweries themselves, their approach to their beers, why they chose to focus on mostly lagers and Belgian styles, how their incredible kitchen came to be, and the growth of craft beer in the Niagara region. They crushed Newark's Helles Lager, Huhh Yeah Light Lager, Oktoberfest Märzen and their flagship Dunkel. Cheers! When people think of South Dakota, beer doesn't likely come to mind. Maybe Mount Rushmore. Probably agriculture. But in this episode, we're exploring what it means to be a part of building a culture and knowledge for beer in a state where that's still sort of new. We're chatting with Nicki Werner, director of brewing at Jefferson Beer Supply in Jefferson, South Dakota, a city with a small population and until just recently, a lack of exposure to homegrown beer. Nicki opened the business with her partner and Jefferson native, Anthony Roark, and together the pair are showing how a commitment to education and community can grow something unique in places where the idea of “craft beer” is still new. Light Lager may dominate the minds and taste buds of local residents, but Nicki's skill in the brewhouse is working to introduce customers to pastry Sours, Imperial Stouts, and Hazy IPAs. As you'll hear from Nicki, it takes a holistic effort to pull it off, and it helps to also find inspiration from peers that show how connecting to the place where you live and work can be translated to the way you make and sell beer.
In this special GABF Gold! edition of the podcast, Greg Winget of Wye Hill Brewing in Raleigh, North Carolina and Alex Sarames of Deadwords Brewing in Orlando, Florida discuss their specific, and sometimes unconventional, approaches to their respective gold-medal-winning beers. Winget and Wye Hill won gold with Luminous Beings, a hazy pale ale that uses a variety of current techniques to maximize flavor expression. He discusses: Brewing with 100% craft malt across the brewery Mash hopping for thiol precursors, character, and pH buffer Employing a very long whirlpool spin and soak cycle Fermenting cooler with Cosmic Punch Two-stage dry hopping to avoid over saturation Slow and measured transfers The importance of soft water Packaging on a very small but low-DO canning line And more! Sarames and Deadwords won with Bridge, an American light lager with a most unexpected hop choice. He discusses: Selecting Rahr North Star Pils for its light character Single infusion mashing Using Vista as the sold hop in the beer 120 minute boils to drive off DMS precursors Switching to the BSI Andech's yeast strain for fermentation Using the RO system to strip down and rebuild water Maintaining a clean facility And more! Light lager may not be the style most brewers are passionate about, but it's one that many people drink. Long dominated by macro brewers and beers lightened by corn and rice adjuncts, it's a competition category that fewer craft brewers have found success in. But for Andy Hooper, former brewmaster of Seismic Brewing in Santa Rosa, California, the beer style was ripe for craft reinvention. A very technically-minded brewer, Hooper had built out the brewhouse and cellar to allow for a fine degree of control, but the process of dialing in light lager using organic malt that was grown and malted in California by craft maltsters required quite a bit of fine tuning. In this episode, Hooper discusses: designing a brewery with wastewater reclamation and sustainability at its core connecting with craft maltsters and modifying stock malting processes for lightness and flavor committing to minimalist brewing with a focus on ingredients hot side process and constantly monitoring pH specific lautering parameters geared toward clean light lager gentle ingredient handling to minimize any distracting flavors controlled aeration developing a nitrogen-based process for breaking up hop cones for fresh-hopped lager And more. _Note- after this episode was recorded, Andy resigned from Seismic Brewing, hence the designation as "former" Seismic brewmaster. _ G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): G&D Chillers new Micro Channel Condensers! "I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell." On a special live and in the flesh episode of Domestic Pints ONLY, the prodigal son has returned home: Tom is back in Ottawa, baby! He came over to John's apartment and we recorded the episode on John's balcony (hence why you hear the constant sound of nature, this episode makes for a good sleep aid!). This week we are doing another brewery spotlight, focusing on the acclaimed Blyth, Ontario brewery: COWBELL BREWING CO. We first chat the light lager: SMOOTH SAILING! Next up is the tasty kölsch ale, ABSENT LANDLORD. We wrap things up discussing the popular IPA HAZY DAYS. Along the way we also discuss the following topics: Tom's flight to Ottawa, John's half marathon run, seeing J. Cole play basketball, Nardwuar the Human Serviette, and Tom's home brewed IPA. We had a fun time crushing these beers and an even better time chatting and drinking face-to-face. Check out COWBELL beers all across Ontario. I GOTTA HAVE MORE COWBELL! Next week, we will be back with our long awaited 'seltzer sunday' episode - stay tuned! We're heading to the grocery store this week on Domestic Pints ONLY, and we're coming home with some CO-OP brand beers from the Variety Pack box. We chat a bit about these beers (produced by Calgary's own Big Rock Brewing) before giving a rating to the cans. We then delve into the lineup: Lager, Light Lager, IPA, Pilsner, and the irreverent Red Ale. This was one of our wildest episodes yet: featuring some strong surprise beers that we loved, and a couple of our lowest scores TO DATE. Overall, it was an experience. If you're having a "challenging day", check out these cheapo domestic beers! Show notes from John Holl:"By the time you're hearing this, I'll be at the Jersey Shore, unplugged and drinking cream ale. It's a long-planned vacation but as I got ready for some days away I had a sense of senioritis kick in. I knew I needed to get a show done, but my brain was also mushy from deadlines and life. When an email from Ben Love popped up in my email, I knew I had found a solution. I've known Ben for years. I've been to the brewery he co-founded with Van Having several times, and even spent some time – as you'll hear – with him in New Zealand when he poured at the Beervana Festival and I spoke at the country's black tie brewers gathering. Ben is a brewer who likes to tease out flavors and look for the unexpected. He also has a traditionalist streak in him and all of it shows in the beer. He's also a world class conversationalist and I knew that having him on the show would be an easy layup as I head into a holiday. Is it lazy? Maybe. But, it's still entertaining and informative for you, because I'd never sacrifice on that."This Episode is sponsored by:NZ HopsNZ Hops, the co-operative of Master Hop Growers are a passionate collective of farms dedicated to innovation and sustainability. Over the last few weeks a few IPAs have popped up here at the home broadcast studio that all had the same label reading “Things We Don't Say." It was soon revealed to be a collaboration beer between Eagle Park Brewing and the Hope for the Day Foundation that was offered to breweries around the world. It's designed to talk about mental health in and around the beer space – and that includes the drinkers as well. You've heard of Hope for the Day on this show before, notably when Drew Fox of 18th Street Brewing was on the show a few months ago. Max Borgardt is the guest this week. He and his brothers had a choice, he says, either become musicians or brewers. They choose wisely, even if they are still heavily involved in music. As the brewery has grown in the last few years they've played to their strengths, IPA, a light beer aimed at non-craft drinkers, and hard seltzer smoothies. It has helped the brewery gain recognition, not only in their state but beyond its borders. It seems like every conversation is going to be about COVID-19 at some point, because it's just ever present on the mind. Get vaccinated. When we recorded this in July the CDC had not yet updated guidance, and so host John Holl started off by talking about how things were opening up and how the brewery was getting back into the swing of things with sales and planning for the grand re-opening of their new taproom, which barely had time for a proper first grand opening. Max spoke to the show over Zoom from the brewery in Muskego. This Episode is sponsored by:BriessBriess is the leading supplier of specialty malt to craft brewers. For Kevin Ashford, brewmaster of Figueroa Mountain Brewing (https://www.figmtnbrew.com) in Buellton, California, every beer can always be improved. After winning two medals for their Danish Red Lager, Ashford and team made the difficult decisions to simplify the malt bill, dry it out a touch, and add a decoction step—significant moves for a beer that had a following and had wowed judges. But for Ashford, truly great beers are created through a process of subtraction—iterating and eliminating anything that doesn't need to be there, while using all the tools in the brewing playbook to maximize the expression in what's left. In this episode of the podcast, Ashford shares his optimization strategies, primarily in the lager realm. These include: Decocting Mexican-style lager to build malt character and create “weight” in light lagers Using Contessa hops for a classic but fresh feel Employing multiple lager yeast strains in the production brewhouse Cellaring with a combo of cylindroconical fermenters and brite tanks to optimize clarity Understanding the importance of time in lager brewing Using contemporary hops like El Dorado and Strata in lagers The benefit of cold fermentation on retaining hop aromas And more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): Like your flagship beer you can rely on G&D Chillers for the same quality and consistency. G&D guarantees that every chiller they build will hit 28 degrees without breaking a sweat. They never stop. They draft, they craft, they service each and every brewery – big or small. BSG (https://bsgcraftbrewing.com/) Even the best yeast deserves a helping hand with seltzer fermentation, which is why Pathfinder N-Pure Seltzer Nutrient ensures reliable and complete fermentation of a seltzer base, while providing a clean, neutral fermentation profile. Not to mention it provides all the essential nutrients required by yeast for production of hard seltzer bases fermented from those sweet refined sugars. Give your seltzer yeast a boost by visiting bsgcraftbrewing.com (https://bsgcraftbrewing.com/) and searching for Pathfinder N-Pure Seltzer Nutrient, or call BSG at 1.800.374.2739. Old Orchard (https://www.oldorchard.com/brewer): The most common complaint about hard seltzers? They need more flavor. Extract alone is a weak flavoring agent and can leave a chemical aftertaste. But there's a better way. The craft concentrate blends from Old Orchard are packed with REAL FRUIT FIRST, no added sugars, and just enough natural flavor. Breweries are turning to Old Orchard concentrates for seltzer with more body, color, and aroma. Turn seltzer skeptics into supporters with seltzer that drinks like a beer. The overlaps between beer and whiskey are plentiful. Both rely on craftsmanship and quality ingredients, and share certain production methods in common. Modern makers in either category have the luxury of looking at tradition while pushing the boundaries of innovation for the future. But it's the differences between the two that keep things interesting. Single malt whiskey producer Stranahan's in Denver, Colorado is one such modern maker, one that's helping to define the budding American single malt whiskey category against Scotch and other international players. A visit in 2018 led writer Gabby Pharms to dive into their process, history, and position as Colorado's first new legal whiskey distillery since Prohibition for her latest piece in Good Beer Hunting titled “Whiskey and the Mile High City — The Distillery Making Single Malt in the Rocky Mountains,” which was published on June 16, 2021. In our conversation about her piece—which was written for our Beer and a Shot series, made in partnership with Miller High Life—Gabby reveals what led her to spotlight a producer who she feels is at the forefront of an American spirits revolution. Not only does their early entry into the category position Stranahan's at the vanguard, but their literal mile high location also serves to shape their products in a unique way. In our conversation, Gabby discusses how she prefers her single malt whiskey (neat, or perhaps with one cube) and which beverages she tends to pair with barbecue (it's not Light Lager, as I incorrectly presupposed). She also muses on what the future holds for American whiskey makers, finds some silver linings in the wake of COVID, and believes there's truly a whiskey for everyone. If American single malt whiskey has a cheerleader, it's Gabby Pharms.

Portland Timbeers-A podcast about the Portland Timbers & Oregon Beer.
In this weeks episode, Jason and Gary interview Floyd Hayes a daring east coast guerrilla marketer who just a matter of a few days-made the International News for registering his beer as a service animal. The Food Network, Fox, The Daily News, and the New York Post all ran the story originating from an article in the Ale Street News Floyd has recently been the target of critics on both sides of the political spectrum as well as those who feel he is mocking people who need service animals. In this interview You will learn about the genesis of this idea, Floyd's love for beer and his brief stint as a home brewer.Jason and Gary also discuss Jason's new Light Lager, brewed with $50 dollars (1/4 ounce) of Zaran Saffron.Jason and Gary discuss the upcoming Fort George Dark Arts Festival and some of the beers they are looking forward to.Gary pulled a 10 year old Jubel Ale from the recess of his Garage Freezer and they compare a 2010 with a 2019 Jubelale.Beers Enjoyed tonight:Meridian Vanilla Stout by Ecliptic BrewingJubelale (2019) by Deschutes BreweryJubelale (2010) by Deschutes BreweryA big thanks to Floyd Hayes for your time, the interview and for being courageous enough to push the limits! To contact Jason and Gary please email them at:Email PortlandTimbeers@yahoo.com Twitter @PDXTIMBEERSInstagram: PDXTimbeersUntappd: PDXTimbeers See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
When discussing this, the world's most popular beer style, we get into topics such as off-flavors, the power of advertising, and macro beer brand loyalty. Then we get drunk and try to envision a scenario for which genocide is the only solution. Enjoy!
We're finally putting our taste buds where our mouths are (or was that always the case?) with this blind light lager taste test. We try to guess between the two Night Shift beers we had recently and the macro beers they are based on. Our thoughts might just surprise you! In this episode, we focus on the American Lager and Light Lager, BJCP Categories 1A and 1B. We know these are styles that are easy to poke fun at. However, it is hard to not recognize the skill it takes to make a beer that light. With little room for error, the big boys have figured out a way to make these “lawnmower” beers taste exactly the same no matter where they are brewed. We have a selection of the mass-produced American beers to discuss, plus we will be sampling some local interpretations of the styles as well as some style variants. So grab a tall boy and kick up your feet.
Natalie from Southbound stops by to talk about their Mac N Cheese event and let the guys try Southbound's new Light Lager
Light Lager(Description c/o Beer Advocate)The Light Lager is generally a lighter version of a brewery's premium lager, some are lower in alcohol but all are lower in calories and carbohydrates compared to other beers. Typically a high amount of cereal adjuncts like rice or corn are used to help lighten the beer as much as possible. Very low in malt flavor with a light and dry body. The hop character is low and should only balance with no signs of flavor or aroma. European versions are about half the alcohol (2.5-3.5% ABV) as their regular beer, yet show more flavor (some use 100 percent malt) then the American counterparts. For the most part, this style has the least amount of flavor than any other style of beer.Subcategory: American-Style Light Lager-Mass-Produced - Bud Light, Coors Light, PBR, Miller Lite-Color – Very Light to pale-Clarity: Chill haze should not be present-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Very Low-Hop Aroma and Flavor and Bitterness Absent to Very Low-Body: Low with dry mouthfeel-ABV: 3.5%-4.4%Subcategory: American-Style Amber Light Lager Color: Pale to medium amber. The word “Light” refers to light body and reduced calories rather than color.Subcategory: German-Style Leichtbier (German for “Light Beer”)Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Low to mediumPerceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Low to medium-Glassware: Pilsener Glass (or Pokal) – (c/o Beer Advocate) Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass, shaped like a trumpet at times, that captures the sparkling effervesces and colors of a Pils while maintaining its head. A Pokal is a European Pilsner glass with a stem. Benefits: Showcases color, clarity and carbonation. Promotes head retention. If you've ever taken a trip to Asheville, NC you've likely heard, "If you can find the time, take a trip to Fonta Flora." Todd Boera opened his original brewery about an hour east of Asheville in Morganton. Slightly closer is Fonta Flora's new Whippoorwill Farm location, a 9-acre farm and 15-barrel brewhouse. Being away from the action of Asheville hasn't hurt his brewery. His unique brews with ingredients like beets, carrots, and tulsi bring in plenty of fans, and many do make the side trip from Asheville. Boera uses only local ingredients in his brews and his farm will have a sizable orchard as well as garden areas to grow other ingredients. For those he can't grow himself he'll source from other local farmers. Fonta Flora also has their own house culture used to ferment their "Appalachian Wild Ales". With the growth the new location has allowed, you'll see some more "normal" beers like Kolsch, Maibock, and even a Light Lager. The funk will keep flowing as well. Boera admits some of his creations are for a very specific audience, but they're what put Fonta Flora on the map and continue to be very important beers for them to brew.
