This week we travel back in time to just after the dawn of PUNK ROCK (1978-1981)! We discuss bands influenced by the 1st wave who then took punk into various sub-genres. If you don't think Punk is for you based on secondhand information, we ask that you listen with an open mind and prepare to get out some aggression. This episode features songs with the shortest track length that we've ever played; it's PUNK ROCK people! Punk is where Kevin started down his path of music fanaticism. Although, that was more based around the hardcore Punk scenes. This is the lead-up to hardcore, and what would establish punk as a lasting genre full of variety and originality. Hope you dig the 2nd wave!Songs this week include:The Dictators – “Faster And Louder” from Blood Brothers (1978)Magazine – “Shot By Both Sides” from Real Life (1978)Chelsea – “I'm On Fire” from Chelsea (1979)The Stranglers – “Dead Loss Angeles” from The Raven (1979)GG Allin – “One Man Army” from Always Was, Is, And Always Shall Be (1980)Zounds – “Can't Cheat Karma” from Curse Of The Zounds (1980)Soggy – “Waiting For The War” from Soggy (1981)The Cheifs – “Liberty” from Holly-West Crisis (1981)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store
"Cardinal SOG" and I first met on IG over a Social Distortion post in which Mike Ness was getting blasted by keyboard commandos for simply posting a picture of him standing with police officers. Since then, he and I have chatted a lot about the power of music, childhood troubles and trauma, finding purpose in life, and serving to help others. On this episode, he opens up about witnessing the domestic violence his mother endured, her death, gunshots ripping into his trailer, being a latchkey kid, and overcoming hurdles to become a firefighter, EMS, and work search and rescue. Oh...and he was in a band. Instagram: @cardinalsog

Joe Teague's name and marketing are well-known, but his music truly shines. Blending punk, folk, and bluegrass, he crafts catchy, clever tunes with witty lyrics and a voice reminiscent of Mike Ness. This gifted local musician navigates the original and cover music scene, offering a unique and palatable sound. When he's not making music, he's either being a father or raccoon watching. We're thrilled to have him on. Join me in welcoming Joe Teague to the Mouthful of Graffiti podcast! Sponsored by the Harford County Cultural Arts Board.

Interview by Kris PetersTwo international heavyweights of the rock and punk movement touch down in Australia in just over two weeks when Social Distortion and Bad Religion combine for a co-headlining tour.Kicking off in Auckland on February 15 the show travels to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth for a nostalgic look into the musical past that has also strongly shaped our future. In their 40 plus years of existence Social Distortion have only ever been to Australia once before and this run with Bad Religion also serves as their first headlining visit.HEAVY caught up with frontman Mike Ness to find out more, starting with choosing Bad Religion to celebrate the occasion."I just thought it was a cool opportunity," he shrugged. "We started about the same time. We've survived and managed to keep moving forward. There's a lot of similarities. I just thought it was a good idea of bringing two California bands that are equally well known and kind of making it a little more bang for the buck."Due to the fact Social Distortion have only ever toured Australia once before, it's fair to say that many local fans don't quite know what to expect. Sure, you can check out shows on YouTube and social media, but there's nothing that equals the intensity of actually being there."We might be getting older but we take this very seriously," he said. "We put on a high energy show. We start at the beginning of our career and work our way up in an hour and fifteen minutes. There's old stuff, there's not so old stuff and then there's a couple of new things because we are getting ready to record an album. We are going to be throwing in some new songs as well, as well as some classics that we haven't done in a long time."In the full interview, Mike talks more about what to expect from the tour, his memories of touring Australia, the early days of Social Distortion, the changing face of the music industry, refining your sound away from the mainstream, the new album and more.

Back when Casey Royer was a young lad living at home, his good friend Mike Ness stayed with him for a brief stint. Being bored young teenagers they decided to start a band in Casey's bedroom called Social Distortion. On this episode, Casey brings in a cassette tape with a band practice song from the first iteration of the band Social Distortion. The recorded song on the tape is called Total Control with Mike Ness on guitar, Casey Royer on drums and Tom Corvin on vocals. Casey also dives into talking about the Detours, Adolescents, Radolescents, and, of course, DI. So, sit back, grab your favorite beverage and enjoy a little bit of Orange County punk rock history.

This is a fabulous convo, digging into the importance of teaching and learning emotional intelligence from a young age to improve our lives and heal society, and talking about Sarah's relationships with their parents, childhood experiences, self awareness, identity, empathy, and their life as a single parent, activist, musician and awesome human.Sarah formed their current band, Sarah Shook and The Disarmers, in 2014 and their current album, Nightroamer, is just magnificent - attitude, tunes, emotion and bags of self awareness. Happy February, friends. In passing Dave mentioned how he thought $3,000 was the perfect amount to buy a guitar, so Hank decided they should put it to the test… via The $3K Challenge. To leave it open to play again in the future, we decided to keep it specific - 6-string electric guitar with humbuckers. What do you think the buds chose? And will Hank ever follow rules? Also discussed: Dave's new Chicago Stompworks Grey Spec, getting RANDYED, Akai MPK Mini Mk3, fuzz first, the Mike Ness signature Gibson Les Paul, HitPiece doing more stupid stuff with NFTs, flagging gear on Craigslist, Willie Dunn needs a doc, and Buddy Holly.Podcast bros have feelings too.
Krystal Robbins (VP of Radio Promotion for ANTI-/Epitaph Records) might just take the cake for the most coolest artists mentioned per capita so far on RFUS! We actually recorded this in late 2020, but the podcast guest booking agent (aka me) took a few months off in 2021. Now we're back into a new season in August of 2021! In her years at ANTI- alone, Krystal has worked with everyone from Neko Case to Mavis Staples, from M. Ward to Mike Ness & Social Distortion to Michael Franti & Spearhead. Krystal has worked on behalf of legends like Tom Waits and Joe Strummer as well as newer acts like Jade Jackson, Son Little and The Antlers, to get airplay on some of the best radio stations in the country from KROQ in L.A. to WFUV in NYC. We shared stories of those gone too soon (like Cobain & Cornell & WFUV's own Rita Houston), the surprise equinox release of Fleet Foxes' latest amazing album, and (on a lighter note) RBF syndrome, dating back to Epitaph's heyday of Bad Religion, Pennywise, Guttermouth and so many more and an intern named Frances Bean Cobain.
For episode 67, we are joined by singer Jade Jackson. Jade has released two albums produced by Social Distortion frontman, Mike Ness. Jade tells us about her background in California and the music she grew up on and how music became a career for her. We get into how lockdown put her flourishing touring schedule on hold and what the plans are the next few years. Look out for Jade's exciting new side project with Aubrie Sellers. The Leaks Begin on the forthcoming IG Horowitz Report. CNN suffers momentary panic with Preet Bharara, describing the "really serious" news that an FBI Agent has been caught altering FISA documents. But the initial chills were soon dampened by additional leaks to the Washington Post and New York Times. We clarify our expectations for the IG Report -- probably spicier than standard Horowitz fare, thanks to oversight from AG Barr and John Durham. Thus far, the initial MSM protective spin has been surprisingly weak. Which means trouble ahead for The Perps. Good signs, as we await the real action from John Durham's investigation into the Origins of SpyGate, which now includes spook Stefan Halper's ties to the Pentagon's Office of Net Assessment. Meanwhile, Glenn Simpson of FusionGPS claims to have been duped by the Russian Natalia Veselnitskaya, while also claiming 'victim' status as his Black Ops continue to unravel. Totally Laughable. Plus, additional caller perspective on Ukraine from a former resident of Ukraine, eyewitness to corruption. Ukraine for sale, on the cheap. Also, we revisit the Golden Age we are now living in, along with the importance of cracking the MSM Propaganda Matrix in order to enjoy our lives. Setting our minds free from MSM tyranny. Tech Tyrants Hide the Whistleblower. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter deleting the name of Eric Ciaramella. Alas, the formal arrival of George Orwell's 1984. The Purge only gonna get worse headed unto 2020. But why has Adam Schiff suddenly changed his mind on direct Whistleblower testimony? A resume too revealing of Coup Plotting Collusion? Plus, we discuss Jeffrey Epstein's return to the news cycle. James O'Keefe releases real whistleblower audio showing ABC reporter Amy Robach fretting over ABC News spiking her Epstein story three years ago. Then, in the aftermath, making matters worse, ABC & CBS collude to fire the wrong whistleblower -- a young woman named Ashley Bianco. Whoops. We conclude Epstein will keep Hillary Clinton from ever running again. And also -- Epstein did not kill himself. Also, we review the excellent new film Official Secrets about Deep State blackmail leading up to the 2003 Iraq War. Our take on Jeff Sessions announcing his run for Senate in Alabama. Six More Miles. This week on the Militant Minority Report, we get even more seditious than usual with the help of army resister Spenser Rapone (@punkproletarian). Mike Ness of Social Distortion brings a smile to our faces. Spenser's journey from 18-year-old recruit to dank communist meme. The relationship between capitalism and imperialism: Is it even possible to oppose war without attacking the wage system? The pitfalls of knee-jerk anti-imperialism. A comparative history of resistance and mutiny during the Vietnam War and Portugal's Carnation Revolution, the latter of which overthrew a fascist government with hardly any violence. Andy Stapp's heroic efforts to unionize the US Army in the Vietnam era. Will anyone pick up the mantel? The military as potential — even essential — site of class struggle, and the various factors working for and against that. Could a revolution ever happen here in the dark heart of the American empire, and if so, what would it look like? Lastly and most importantly: Was Spenser just trolling or does he really think communism will win? Opening Monologue: Our Crappy Institutions. Hostile to the American People and to the American Way of Life. A review of the latest Horowitz IG Report and its implications for the Criminal Deep State. Running out of reasons to trust the FBI, the DOJ and the rest of the Beltway Bureaucrats. We glimpse their contempt for Flyover Country as we consider the string of epithets they have used to describe the taxpayers who sustain their existence. But for how much longer? We analyze Peter Strzok's "smoking gun" text about the FBI's failed attempt to "stop" Trump. Also, President Obama suddenly caught in a lie of his own about Hillary's private email account. How will MSM find a way around that one? Plus, an unimpressed Sen. Chuck Schumer describes Trump's successful Singapore Summit as "all cattle, no hat." David Raven, Billy Watts and Taras Prodaniuk make their living making other people sound good. Their collective credits include albums and tours with Bruce Springsteen, Norah Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, June Carter Cash, Lucinda Williams, Mike Ness, Dixie Chicks, Richard Thompson, Jim Lauderdale, Peter Himmelman, Buck Owens, T-Bone Burnett and countless others. They're journeymen in top form, they're still on the journey, and they've been friends for decades. After spending so much time backing up other artists, they long ago decided to start their own trio, Mojo Monkeys, as a place to get their collective musical rocks off. The years of hard work shows in Mojo Monkeys. Unconstricted by a big name on a marquee, these guys can follow their own muse. There are funky grooves, and expert lines that duck in and out of a greasy and spicy New Orleans-influenced musical stew. For all their chops, the band never veers into ponderous wanking territory. Put another way, Mojo Monkeys isn't a side project that provides a bleeder valve for gratuitous sideman musical eccentricities, it's a place where three friends who happen to be expert musicians can share their common love for making music. Their mutual affection shines through, as does the reverence for the material they create together. Raven takes the lion's share of the lead vocals, standing at a hybrid upright drum set that allows him to better engage the audience by not being confined to a drum riser back between the amps. Watts' harmonic motion on his pale green Gretsch finds him delivering the perfect licks in all the right places, and Prodaniuk's snaky bass lines provide counterpoint as well as doing an exemplary job doing what the most astute bassists do best - which is making sure that the whole thing hangs together. Their new record, Swerve On, continues the groovy, danceable tack that Mojo Monkeys have defined for themselves over the course of their several records, and throws in a bit of The Band's eclectic sensibilities for good measure. It's hard not to smile when they do what they do, because Mojo Monkeys' music is fun, plain and simple.
Sen. Rand Paul says John McCain has been wrong on everything for "four decades." President Trump discusses "very fake news" in a tour de force press conference. John Dickerson of CBS admits the media has lost America, and can only blame themselves for it. Will the Trump Wall save money? Why are Chinese students at UCSD trying to block an appearance of the Dalai Lama? Plus, we listen to First Lady Melania Trump recite the Lord's Prayer. Future Vice President Mike Pence gets lectured and hectored by the Broadway cast of the Hamilton musical during a recent performance. We review the controversies that have ensued and take a historical look at the real Alexander Hamilton -- whom we suggest had much in common with President-Elect Donald Trump per economic, trade and foreign policy principles. Meanwhile, we puzzle over the allegedly "pro-diversity" Hamilton producer's recent casting call for "non-white" actors only. Something off-key about that? Plus, we consider Senator Jeff Sessions' nomination for Attorney General, and ask why the New York Times is suddenly adding his middle name to its related reportage. To wit, "Beauregard." We also ask why commentator David Brooks has not yet kept his word and moved to Canada. Is there some delay? With Listener Calls and Music via Paul McCartney, Mike Ness, Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gary Johnson enters outer space. The Libertarian presidential candidate sticks his tongue out at an NBC reporter, then later announces a grand plan for future humanity to "inhabit other planets." And so we ask -- to the Star Trek theme -- is Johnson already doing so? Meanwhile, we surf the good news on the latest polls and consider tomorrow night's big debate matchup between Trump and Hillary. We offer bipartisan advice as we continue our conversation with Jan from "Colorado Women for Trump." Also, we listen to legendary boxing-promoter Don King discuss his support for Donald Trump and the founding principles of America. Plus, a memorial tribute to Arnold Palmer. Les Deplorables, Les Execrables. Notes on the gaping "enthusiasm differential" between Trump and Clinton supporters, with grassroots updates from a "Honk & Wave" event organized by Colorado Women for Trump. A conversation with paterfamilias John Andrews on East Coast terrorism, Hillary's Health and the trends for "change" in 2016. Are concerns about Hillary's physical well-being less important than concerns about "trust" in what she reveals about her health? Is Democratic VP nominee Tim Kaine now walking back his running mate's "deplorable" and "irredeemable" phraseologies? With Listener Calls and Music via Buddy Holly, Mike Ness, Frank Sinatra and George Baker. Plus, we review the twangy new Dwight Yoakam rendition of Prince's "Purple Rain."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We need new leadership in America. A conversation with paterfamilias John Andrews, former Nixon staffer and president of the Colorado Senate. To what extent is President Obama's rhetoric on law enforcement culpable for police slayings in Dallas and Baton Rouge? Did Obama "set the table" for these tragic events? Meanwhile, we review the selection of Gov. Mike Pence as running mate for Donald Trump -- a "solid gold" decision, says Andrews -- as we chronicle the "last gasps" of the Never Trump movement. Also, we survey the enduring challenges of the Hillary Clinton campaign with regards to basic "messaging." At this point in time, after all of her years in public life, does Hillary even know why she's running for office? Does her motivation stem from a devotion to principle -- or more of a desire for power? Plus, with an eye to recurrent terror in France, we recall the "James Taylor Diplomacy" of the Obama Administration, and suggest the need for an immediate uptick in seriousness to the level of "Hall and Oates."
