Segment 1. Progressive Democrats of America Tucson Chapter Organizing Meeting on February 22, 2011. The video in this segment has never been published. It was shot in February 2011, just a few months after the Tea Party victories in November 2010, a few weeks after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot at the Safeway Shopping Center in Tucson, Arizona and one year after Citizens United SCOTUS case. Three hundred progressives answered a tiny Tucson Weekly newspaper ad to hear about PDA and progressive activism. It was an exhilarating evening. In talking about the proposed Tea Party budget cuts and tax breaks for the rich, Grijalva foreshadows the struggles we have today. The 2010 election was the first one influenced by the SCOTUS decision that corporations are people and money is speech. Twenty-five years later, the richest man in the world bought the presidency for $270 million in campaign donations. The billionaires are in charge. Grijalva warned us in 2011.Segment 2. Senator Bernie Sanders Presidential Campaign Rally in Reid Park on October 9, 2015. Bernie drew 1000s of people in a rally in Reid Park in Tucson, Arizona on a lovely fall evening. Grijalva endorsed Bernie for president. This segment is Grijalva's introduction of Bernie. To see all of the videos from that evening, go to my PamelaPowersTucsonProgressive YouTube channel. (I shot a lot of footage that night. It's all broken up by speaker and for Bernie by topic because he talked for like 90 minutes. My camera battery ran out. Bernie's 2015 speeches are inspiring.)Segment 3. Vigil for Democracy on January 6, 2022. One year after the January 6, 2021 Insurrection at the US Capitol, about 100 Tucsonans gathered at the cancer survivors memorial at Reid Park in Tucson, Arizona for a candlelight vigil and thoughtful speeches from local elected officials. This segment is Grijalva's speech. (Forgive the shaky video, I handed my smart phone to a friend, while I waited in line to speak.) You can view all of the speeches from the Vigil for Democracy on this YouTube channel. There is also a podcast. Segment 4. Stop Abortion Bans Rally in Tucson. May 14, 2022. Mark's guest is Dr. Kristin Olson-Garewal the CEO and Co-Founder of "The Homing Project" a rapid rehousing project to help homeless people in Tucson. Unlike any other transitional shelter program, "The Housing Project" will provide a home not just a bed including onsite services.Bio ~ J Kristin Olson-Garewal MD Executive Director “The Homing Project” Born in St Paul MN. Oldest Girl of 9 children. We moved frequently to follow my civil engineer father's work on freeway bridges. I did grades 1-12 in parochial school, at first with nuns sent from Ireland to “the mission district of California.” Later I attended an all-girls Catholic high school in Puerto Rico learning Spanish in the process. Then to Boston University's Honors 6 yr. Med Program, finishing with an MD. My internal medicine residency was done at the Boston VA Med Center. Soon after my retirement my son, Raj Garewal asked me to help start a tiny home village for people experiencing homelessness. Raj had worked with a large services center for homeless people in Santa Monica. We had both become concerned with the hundreds of homeless encampments throughout Tucson. So we visited a number of Tucsonans working with the problem of homelessness, Tucson city council members, and tiny home villages in California. Then we started a nonprofit, I resigned my position on Clinical Amistad's Board of Directors due to conflict of interest, and began writing a business plan and applying for grants. JoAnn di Filippo joins Chris to discuss Pima County administration, compare and contrast the styles of retired Administrator Chuck Huckelberry vs new Administrator Jan Lesher. Timing of COVID bonuses and general wage increased for Pima County employees compared to what many Tucsonans have just gone through with COVID. Also the nature of COVID bonuses--intended to be for employees who had to interface with vulnerable population--going to managers and directors. And a change up to Ms. Lesher's leadership team.
In the first episode of Homeless to Wholeness, we explore how one family helped start an organization that continues its legacy of hope, shelter, and transformation. This inspiration story began in 1953 when Ray & Alice Chastain prayerfully founded the Gospel Rescue Mission; this is also the story of their granddaughter, Lisa Chastain, and the opening of The H.S. Lopez Family Foundation Center of Opportunity in 2019. It's an ongoing story, as countless Tucsonans are committed to making a difference in our community, dedicating their lives to the homeless and the poor. Listen in as we discuss this amazing ministry's past, present, and future.

In the face of record murders in Tucson and rising crime, Pima County Administrators want to release inmates. Why? Because corrections officers don't want to get the COVID vaccine so bureaucrats are going to take it out on Tucsonans. And now, as D&H celebrates its 60th anniversary, the family-owned business continues to provide consistent, high quality, expert HVAC services throughout Southern Arizona. In fact, the company is doing an exciting first as they are in the process of opening a state-of-the-art technicians' training center, which will benefit the industry, workforce development and its clients at all levels, including superior 24/7 service, full financing, and coverage of all brands. We spoke with Ron Barber just ahead of the ten year anniversary of the shooting that took place on January 8, 2011, at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ “Congress on Your Corner” event in Tucson. Ron Barber was Gabrielle Giffords District Director at the time of the shooting and was seriously wounded. He later represented Southern Arizona from June 2012 to January 2015. Ron currently is president of the board of the January 8th Memorial Foundation. Ron Barber discussed how he first got to know Gabrielle Giffords while she was still an Arizona State Legislator. He described the moments before the brief 19 seconds and 33 bullets of the shooting- and its aftermath- including the importance of the spontaneous memorials created by Tucsonans immediately after the shooting. Ron spoke about creating the Fund for Civility, Respect, and Understanding while still in the hospital to help fund mental health and anti-bullying initiatives. Initial funding came from a star-studded concert in March 2011 featuring Jackson Browne, Crosby & Nash, Calexico, Ozomatli, Keb Mo’, Sam Moore, Dar Williams, Nils Lofgren, Alice Cooper, and more. He then spoke about the commemorative ceremony that will take place on January 8, 2021, dedicating a memorial at the Historic County Courthouse created for the victims, survivors, and first responders of the Tucson shooting that claimed six lives. Because of the ongoing pandemic, the event may be viewed on Pima County’s Facebook Page. Finally, Barber says that it is not the shooting that defines Tucson, but it is our actions as a community that define us. The Memorial, which is located just west of the Historic Courthouse in El Presidio Park and called “Embrace,” tells the story of the lives lost and people wounded at the hand of a gunman on January 8, 2011, at Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ “Congress on Your Corner” event in Tucson. Here is the artist statement by Rebeca Mendez. Ron administered human service agencies in Arizona for 34 years prior to his work with Congresswoman Giffords. He has served on the boards of nonprofit agencies including Governors Council on Community Coordinated Child Care, United Way, Governors Council on Developmental Disabilities, Southern Arizona Mental Health Corporation, COPE, Our Family Services, Chair, Pima County HIV/Aids Planning Committee, founder and president of the Educational Enrichment Foundation and Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. (KSAT / Romper) (46:15) This Week in Science: What Are the Actual Ingredients in a Vaccine? Here's a quick rundown of the most common ingredients in vaccines, according to the FDA, CDC, and various experts . . . Trace amounts of antibiotics. They're used in production to kill bacteria. No allergic reaction to any vaccine has ever been traced back to the antibiotics in it. Trace amounts of egg proteins. Some vaccines are grown in eggs. And eggs aren't sterile, which is one reason antibiotics have to be used. Vaccines for the flu, measles, mumps, rubella, rabies, and yellow fever contain trace amounts of eggs. But there are alternatives now for people with allergies. Gelatin. It's used as a preservative and a stabilizer. It's the most common ingredient that causes allergic reactions, but it's still rare. Only about one in two million people have a serious reaction to it. MSG. Yes, the same stuff that's in a lot of Chinese food . . . fast food . . . and a ton of junk food, like Doritos. Just like gelatin, it's used as a preservative and a stabilizer. It got a bad rap in the '60s when people claimed it caused issues like headaches and nausea. But there's no evidence it's dangerous. Aluminum. It makes vaccines more effective by strengthening your immune system's response. If you add up all the vaccines a baby gets in the first six months, they contain 4.4 milligrams of aluminum. That's compared to 7 milligrams in six months' worth of breast milk . . . 38 milligrams if they only eat baby formula . . . and 117 milligrams if it's a soy-based baby formula. Formaldehyde. There's a tiny bit to inactivate the virus . . . as much as 0.02 milligrams per dose. But we have WAY more of it than that circulating in our bodies naturally. The average baby has 50 to 70 times that much formaldehyde at birth. There's also something called thimerosal, that contains a tiny amount of mercury . . . but a much-less-dangerous kind than you find in fish. It's another preservative that's been used in vaccines for 90 years. But two decades ago, there were concerns it could cause health issues if it was used too much. So now most vaccines don't have it. Only some types of the flu vaccine have it today. But there are other versions that don't.
