"I could live a lifetime here and still be learning  - it's a relationship - the greatest relationship of my life"Alice Irene Whitaker lives in a small cabin in the woods, is a mother of three, an author of the book “Homing" and host of the  'Reseed podcast, which is about rebuilding our relationship with nature.Surrounded by creek, meadow, and forest, Alice Irene began a new lifelong journey of repairing her fractured relationship with both herself and the natural world. Dismantling a history of anorexia, obsessiveness, and workaholism, she decided to stop taking and start caretaking. She shares how taking the leap to a life in a small cabin in the woods where seasons are apparent, repetition is a daily mantra and a shedding of her previous identity onto the forest floor has given her an opportunity to  live a lifetime in her new landscape and still be learning from the outside world every day - she sees her surrounds as a relationship-the greatest relationship of her life. Loved this? This week's EYE ON NPI is a Texas-two-steppin' motion controller that takes your 2-axis motion control to the next level: it's ADI/Maxim/Trinamic's TMC5272 Dual-Axis Stepper Motor Controller and Driver IC. We've been checking out many of Trinamic's great stepper motor driver chips lately and this one is the latest generation, with 2 drivers, plus motion control, for advanced usage even on boards that don't need real-time GPIO toggling for steps. Trinamic is definitely not a group that 'rests on their laurels': every year they are coming out with even more improvements to their awesome stepper motor drivers. This chip has 250 pages of datasheet and each page details yet another improvement or setting that will make your mechatronics fast, silent, and efficient. What sets the TMC5272 (https://www.digikey.com/short/0mq250r7) apart? Well, the first big thing is you get double the fun with two full stepper drivers for X and Y axis support. The voltage range is 2-20V, so good for low to medium voltage motors. The tradeoff is you can only get 1.5A max peak current, 1.1A sine wave, but for most users that don't have massive steppers that is perfectly fine. There's also a lot more 'smarts' in this stepper than the ones even from a couple years ago: 8-point motion control, no-loss/no-sense-resistor current management, 2D trajectory management over two axes, encoder or reference switch inputs, sensorless standstill motion detection. Of course all the fixin's you expect from the previous generations are there: silent stepping, UART and SPI and step/dir interface, stallguard, 1 to 256 microstepping, and diagnostic output But, it's in a 3x3mm WLCSP package: this means you'll need at least a 4 layer board and plugged vias. It also means heat dissipation might be more challenging than the drivers with the big ground pads. However, a nice tradeoff is that there is internal 'lossless' current sensing, so no chunky resistors are required. The upside of a WLCSP is that we have lots more pins for tons of interfaces. Each driver can run one bipolar stepper motor, and has multiple interfaces for control. As usual there's the STEP/DIR interface. This is great for usage with older designs that expect to toggle GPIO on each step. However, the S/D pins are shared with some of the cool sensors/encoders/switches. Plus all the really cool things the chip can do are too complex to adjust with just a few GPIO, so to really get the most use you'll need to use one of the packetized interfaces: UART or SPI. UART is great if you happen to only have USB for your computer: you can always just use a USB-serial converter, and the controller can be daisy-chained for multiple drivers per UART. If you have extra GPIO and/or a dedicated SPI port, we would recommend that since it's much faster and you can easily add more chips with one chip-select per. Some of the cool things you can do via the interface include a 8-point ramp controller: instead of stepping each motor and dynamically adjusting the micro-steps for speed/precision, the TMC5272 can do it all on its own. It can also handle knowing 'where' it is on an axis bar, by using the built in homing support. Homing can be done either by using the sensorless 'StallGuard' (https://www.analog.com/en/lp/001/building-better-stepper-motor-system.html) or with reference switches. You can wire the switches directly to the TMC5272 - good if you want to have slow motion homing since you don't have to whack into the end of the axis - and then let the chip manage where it is. Then you can tell it you want to move and when you want to get there, and the TMC will take care of the rest. For ultra-accurate motion control, you can connect an external optical or magnetic encoder to the motor shaft that will tell you exactly when a step has occurred. There's also a neat back-EMF sensor that can tell when the motor has moved while 'disabled' - good to know when you will need to do another homing step after re-enabling the motor. There's also an TMC5272-EVAL-KIT eval board that you can plug-n-play for instant stepper motor usage (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/TMC5272-EVAL-KIT/22107596), it works instantly with the TMCL IDE for trying out the various programmable settings (https://www.analog.com/en/resources/evaluation-hardware-and-software/motor-motion-control-software/tmcl-ide.html) and turn the motor via the TMCL IDE which sends UART/SPI commands over their USB driver board, so it's perfect for verifying the performance with your desired motors. If you want double the pleasure, double the fun of double-motor driving, you can pick up the ADI/Maxim/Trinamic's TMC5272 Dual-Axis Stepper Motor Controller and Driver IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/0mq250r7) from DigiKey today - it's in stock & ready to ship immediately! Place your order now & by tomorrow morning you can be step-step-stepping to the most advanced 2-axis motor controller design you've ever seen.

Richard Ellis Talks

Homing pigeons have a way of always returning home. In the same way, when we become believers in Christ, the Holy Spirit acts as a sort of "homing mechanism" inside of us that draws us back to God, no matter how far we drift. Repentance isn't just for the unbeliever -- it's a reminder for each of us who have strayed to stop where we are and return to God.

Homing instinct in cats 9:45 #cats #catfacts #catlovers Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - The Mesopotamians and ancient Egyptians were the first to domesticate cats. Since these cultures were dependent on agriculture, the enemies of their livelihood were the animals that ate their crops. - Since Egyptians thought of cats so highly, they accessorized their pets with jewels. The richer and more aristocratic the owner, the bigger the jeweled collar their cat wore. - In ancient Egypt, anyone found guilty of killing a cat, even accidentally, was sentenced to death. - Egyptians thought that Bastet manifested physically as a cat and protected Egypt from invasion, just like a cat protects its owner's home. - In Slavic mythology, it was believed that a barn cat named Ovinnik was the protector of crops and livestock. - It was only around the Middle Ages when cat folklore turned dark. During this time, cats were thought to be accomplices of witches and black magic. - You've likely heard about the knack cats have for always landing on their feet no matter how far they fall. This is called a “righting reflex,” - Cats can't taste sweet foods, but they do have an extra organ that allows them to taste scents in the air. Apparently, that's why they stare at you sometimes with their mouths open! - Cats have outstanding balance that's only made better by their long tails. - Cats are carnivores, which (aside from cleaning themselves) is why they have that rough sandpaper tongue. It's supposed to help them clean every last morsel of flesh from an animal bone. - Cats can drink seawater. Unlike humans, cats have kidneys that can filter out the salt from seawater. - The ridges on a cat's noses are like fingerprints for people. That means that no two kitty noses are exactly alike! - Cats purr at a frequency of about 26 purrs per second. I think a lot of people right now are feeling terror or feeling deep grief - worry about climate - and might mention it in a joking way over dinner, like ‘oh, well, we'll see if we're all around in 20 years' and there's so much truth to that, to the pain people are feeling in the worry. And so in the end, I think and hope that it's helpful to share my personal emotional experience of this, even though it's very vulnerable to do so.As promised during our first conversation on June 10th, 2024, in e187 alice irene whittaker - caring for the planet I love, I've now read Homing: A Quest to Care for Myself and the Earth book that came out on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. Here is my review of the book. Please keep in mind that this is my first try at being a literary critic. Luckily, it was easy, because I loved the book and highly recommend it to everyone. I loved the flow of the book, like gently canoeing down a river with occasional sudden rapids but with some portaging. And I notice that you often refer to rivers in the book. We'll come back to that. At times the mix of practical and poetic did not work for me but then I'm not your average reader either, because my life story is actually much like yours, except that that I was a perfectionist and overachieving musician instead of a dancer - and I didn't break my arm, not yet anyway. I think we were brought up equally enamoured with nature and worried sick about the implication of modernity and our complicity in it, though we would not have used that language back then…So on the practical side I enjoyed learning more, for example, about eco-responsible local living : the buy nothing movement, the unbuilding movement, the permaculture movement and so on. I also loved hearing about that magical 37th degree isotherm and other stories of life on earth that warms the spirit. Here are some my highlights: You talk about ‘Fashion as an ecosystem of justice, climate, soil, labour, gender, creativity, expression and culture, made up of people each with their own offerings and niche, intricate in its diversity and interconnections.' in the context of sustainable fashion You remind us that ‘it's time for a whole-of-self-transformation, one that is messy and imperfect and wholehearted', which does not sound perfectionist but rather grounded in realityI love your thinking around economic issues, for example, you wrote that ‘For the circular economy, or any alternative model to be meaningful, it has to recognize Indigenous worldviews and pay reparations to the people who have been exploited, traumatized, and marginalized in the centuries-long project of the linear, patriarchal, colonial and capitalist economy.'And this last one, more on the poetic side, made me nostalgic for winter:Snow is water holding its breath, a calm pause after a deep inhale, waiting for that great exhale of spring when, instead of air, water rushes forth with relief.Beautiful, engaging writing. And of course your Homing book made me think about my own domestic life and my own idea of home.An excerpt from episode 185 of this podcast with indigenous artist Sandra Laronde came to mind: I really believe that we carry the spirit of the land wherever we go. In the Western canon, they say that once you leave home, you can never return, but in the Indigenous canon, home never leaves you. I can see affinities between Sandra's statement about home never leaves you and the purpose of your book which is about : … care, motherhood, healing, faltering, and searching for ways to live during breakdown and about finding home, when our planetary home is eroding, and questioning how - and whether - to have hope. What then is hope? What is home? What is life? What is love? You ask a lot of questions. One of things that caught my attention in Homing was the idea of ‘breakdown' (some might call it ecological and societal collapse) but systemic breaking down in one way or another, which is a necessary step in nature's regeneration process but is also necessary for us to live through as we exit the modern world and btw the word through is very important in your book. We'll come back to that. So, I would say that Homing is a hoot - a funny and moving book - but it's also a sobering book that is connected to reality. What your book shows us, Alice Irene, is how to batten down the hatches and to get ready for a storm that is already here, as you've experienced this week with the floodings in Chelsea, Québec and the disappearance of your gardens and some of your beloved natural spaces but it's also about unblocking creative energies and working through that dynamic. Working through… I like the way you put it on page 171:Believing in myself as beneficial rather than harmful provided a deep and unfamiliar freedom. Overall, I would say that Homing is a valuable addition to ecological and climate crisis literature. It's so deeply personal that we can literally feel your pains and joys but it's also a universal story that can appeal to anyone, anywhere. And I think that it's a literary tour de force and I want to thank you, and your family, for sharing your story and I hope you write a sequel, when you're ready. I'm really curious to know what happens next. *Chapters (generated by AI and corrected by Claude Schryer)Reconnecting and ReflectingAlice Irene and Claude reconnect after their previous conversation, setting the stage for a deep dive into Alice Irene's new book. In this episode of Play Saves the World, the hosts Daniel and Kevin are joined by Thomas Jones, also known as the Birdman, to discuss the love of homing pigeons. They talk about the different types of pigeons, the special abilities of homing pigeons, and the bond between humans and these birds. Thomas shares his personal journey with pigeons and how they saved his life by keeping him away from negative influences. The conversation also touches on the intelligence of crows and the role of nature in providing a sense of freedom and calm. Thomas shares how he got into raising and racing pigeons, including a story about hatching a pigeon from an egg found by his son. He talks about different types of pigeons and their abilities, as well as the process of racing pigeons. Thomas also discusses his ministry of releasing pigeons at funerals and weddings, explaining the symbolism behind it. He shares some fun facts about pigeons and surprises the hosts with a live pigeon named Wolf. The conversation ends with Thomas sharing his YouTube channel and the impact his videos have had on viewers. Takeaways Homing pigeons have a special ability to find their way back home no matter where they are released. Pigeons can form a strong bond with their owners and provide a sense of companionship and dependability. Nature and animals, like pigeons, can bring a sense of calm, joy, and connection to something greater. Hobbies and playful activities, such as keeping pigeons, can have a profound impact on one's life and provide a sense of purpose and meaning. Pigeon racing involves training and racing homing pigeons over long distances. Releasing pigeons at funerals and weddings symbolizes the release of the spirit and brings comfort to grieving families. Keeping pigeons requires regular cleaning and protection from predators. Pigeons can live up to 20 years in captivity. Pigeons have a heart rate of 600 beats per minute while flying. Different breeds of pigeons have different abilities and characteristics. Sound Bites "The birds actually were good for me and kept me away from a lot of things that I could have gotten involved in as a youth." About collapse acceptance : I've been in that space and it is really liberating. How I frame it for myself is : I don't know how it all turns out and it's really out of my control and to not worry about it (not that I never worry about it) but what's really in my control is : do I show up as a human being and feel my humanity and care for the people I love and the places I love and this planet I love ? That is what I can do.I first heard about Alice Irene Whittaker's work from a colleague who said ‘you have to listen to the Reseed podcast'. I did. It's a brilliant podcast about repairing our relationship with nature - and each other. Alice Irene has spent over a decade in leadership and executive roles in nonprofit organizations, think tanks, and charities, with a focus on gender equity and environmental issues. She co-founded, and was Executive Director of Mother Nature Partnership, a charity focussed on reusable, environmentally sustainable menstrual supplies for marginalized women and girls. Alice Irene is a member of Nature Canada's Women for Nature, a group of women of influence who drive change for nature, and sits on the Board of Directors of Régénération Canada. In a previous life, Alice Irene was a professional dancer and contemporary dance choreographer, which she will talk about during our conversation. A heads up that this episode is going to be a 2 part conversation because her new book Homing: A Quest to Care for Myself and the Earth, from Freehand Books, is coming out on September 3, 2024 and I want to have a follow up conversation with Alice Irene specifically about the book later this summer though she does talk about it a bit in this conversation. The book is about care, motherhood, healing, faltering, and searching for ways to live during breakdown and about finding home, when our planetary home is eroding, and questioning how - and whether - to have hope. My feeling is that Alice Irene is ultimately an optimist but I'll need to read Homing to find out how. We also talked about the role of art in the ecological crisis. Alice Irene notes that:Something I've learned about myself over and over again, is that I am an artist and I have an artist's soul, and that there are also other people like that out there. …  I think the role of art is vital and that it's been so underused and under-respected.We also talked about the influence of sitcoms on changing cultural perspectives : I think TV and movies, which are art, are changing opinions around gay marriage, for example, like sitcoms, and having it more embedded into pop culture is something that will be powerful. After conversation on Monday June 10, 2024 we went for a soundwalk to gather further sound material for this episode where she shares stories about her relationship to the land, including how she spent  time during COVID with her three young children by the stream. We'll start the soundwalk in her husband's workshop. Alice Irene recommended the following books: Mary Oliver's poetry (notably Wild Geese)JOY IS THE JUSTICE WE GIVE OURSELVES by J. Drew LanhamWILDING: HOW TO BRING WILDLIFE BACK - AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE by Isabela TreeON ANOTHER PANEL ABOUT CLIMATE, THEY ASK ME TO SELL THE FUTURE AND ALL I'VE GOT IS A LOVE POEM by Ayisha Siddiqa from the On Being podcastthe bibliography of Alice Irene's book HomingNote: Homing: A Quest to Care for Myself and the Earth available for pre-order on this website or at  places like Indigo-Chapters or your local bookstore.Photo of Alice Irene by Brittany-Gawley *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). The year is 1888. Queen Victoria is celebrating her 50th year ruling over an empire on which, famously, the sun never sets. Her loyal subjects, as well as colonizing the heck out of the world, are breeding. And to signify whether they've got a little girl or a little boy in the family, sometimes the offspring break out from the usual white gowns and get dressed in their gender-assigned colors. For girls, blue. For boys, pink.  Blue, it was thought, is a more delicate and dainty shade and also the color associated with Mary Magdalene, the ultimate mother of Christendom. And pink, connected to red, is the stronger color with martial overtones. The British redcoats, after all, were the greatest fighting force of their time. And in fact, it wasn't until the 1940s that things got flipped and pink got stapled onto girls and blue to boys. Today's guest is Kassia St. Clair, a distinguished historian and author with a unique focus on color, textiles, and the everyday aspects of life that often go unnoticed. Her book, "The Secret Lives of Color," delves into the fascinating stories behind different colors throughout history. With a background in design and style writing, Cassia brings a blend of curiosity and discipline to her work, bridging the gap between academia and popular culture.  Get book links and resources at http://2pageswithmbs.com and subscribe to the 2 Pages newsletter at https://2pageswithmbs.substack.com. Kassia reads two pages from Homing: On Pigeons, Dwellings and Why We Return. [reading begins at 16:34] Hear us discuss: "I think the writer comes to the subject both because of this childhood experience, but also because he himself is struggling with the idea of home." - 00:20:55 | "Home is those friendships, many of which I still am lucky to have. Home is what I'm creating for my daughter. And home is London." [25:03] | "History books are given to subject matter experts and professional rivals. You will quite often see that mistakes are made. People don't tend to agree on the facts, and that's why history keeps on moving forward." [36:20] | "I think it's one of the fundamental dances, that dance between freedom and commitment." [38:56] | "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. You know, that sounds both lonely and also at times a little enticing." [39:07]

Everything Everywhere Daily History Podcast

Before the development of electricity and electrical communications, the fastest information could travel was the speed of a horse. Maybe a ship might have been a bit faster depending on the route, but for the most part, the speed of information was limited to the speed of a human.  However, there was one exception to this. It was a communications method that could only carry small amounts of information, it only worked in one direction, and the number of messages you could send was limited, but it was faster than anything else.  It was used for centuries and was still relied upon even after the development of radio. HOW ABOUT THOSE OSCAR ANIMATED SHORTS? (Kidding, it was a fun episode of Night Vale, we're just really excited to talk about cartoons.) Anyway, massive spoiler warnings as we discuss our favorite Oscar-nominated animated shorts, which were as surprising as they were upsetting, just how we like them. (This episode of VagueCast is brought to you by the 2024 Oscar Animated Shorts Collection: yiiiiikes.) And before we wrap up, we also have to go over the latest Hugo-Award-Clusterf*ck news, which was outdated even before we finished recording because it KEEPS GETTING WORSE. This week's outro is a clip from Illusion by Darkfluxx. Correction: we said passenger pigeon several times, when we meant carrier pigeon. Homing pigeon would've been even better. Correction 2: War Is Over isn't a Beatles song, John Lennon released it outside of the band. Elizabeth apologizes to all the John Lennon fans out there. For that and for saying the cartoon would've been better if the song wasn't in it. In case you're curious, here's the list of all the Oscar Winning Animated Shorts. Turns out yes, some years the winner wasn't particularly family-friendly (2021's "The Windshield Wiper" has a lot of sexy content) but 2015's "Bear Story" beat "World of Tomorrow", and 2016's "Piper" beat "Pear Cider and Cigarettes" and that's when Elizabeth decided family-friendly beats edgy-and-cool most years. As of today the Oscar-nominated animated feature Nimona is still up for free on YouTube! Here's a good write-up of the Hugo Awards debacle. (Short version: the board self-censored anything they thought MIGHT upset the Chinese government, and were as stupid about it as you can possibly imagine.) (And the post doesn't mention the fact that the board did business with a Chinese company that's been sanctioned by the US Government, but we're still waiting to hear how all that turns out.) Homing in on the right keywords can significantly impact the outcomes of your search. There are four essential factors to consider formulating your keyword search strategy. Location, location, location! When searching for your dream job, start with your location preference. Whether it's hybrid, remote, or based in a specific city, clarity is key. Don't limit yourself. Explore beyond traditional city boundaries, including that dream location. Industry matters! Tailor your search based on your field of interest. Whether it's education, software development, transportation, or even cruise lines like Disney, be specific about the industry you're targeting. Skills & jargon! Highlight your unique skills or specific job-related jargon. For instance, if you're into pyrotechnics, put it out there! Use quotation marks for precise results and narrow down your search. Job title power! If you have a well-defined job title in mind, include it in your search. Maybe you want to be an administrative assistant, software developer, or cruise line specialist. Whatever it is, make sure to be explicit in your search terms. It's a trial and error process. Don't be afraid to experiment with different combinations of keywords and refine your search strategy. The goal is to strike the perfect balance and find your ideal job match. An effective job search strategy can make all the difference in finding your ideal role. Make sure to listen to this episode and use these four strategies to fine-tune your approach and ultimately secure your desired job.

That's exactly what happened to our guest and trainer Katie, and she's here to provide a first-hand account of the realities and unique trials that come with owning an aggressive and reactive dog. From finding a good breeder, to the surprises that unfurled when she brought her pup, Ghost, home, Katie's journey is an eye-opening exploration into a world many dog owners seldom experience.Ghost's fearful and reactive nature presented Katie with a whole new world of canine behavior, forcing her to rethink traditional training methods. Through her story, we unravel the struggles of navigating a dog's fearfulness, the importance of creating a stable environment, and the critical role of setting boundaries. Katie's experiences highlights the complications that can happen when training a reactive dog and emphasize the need for patience, understanding, and respect for a dog's boundaries. This episode offers a profound look into the world of reactive and aggressive dogs, shedding light on the often misunderstood behaviors of what it means to own a behavioral dog.Purchase Leashes: https://shop.theeverydaytrainer.comVisit the Website: https://theeverydaytrainer.comJoin the Community: https://community.theeverydaytrainer.comFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theeverydaytrainer/
