"The era is brought to life by the accounts of Albanians who lived through it, which capture the importance of football to a populace starved of any other source of communal enjoyment. The otherworldliness and innate cruelty of the Stalinist regime provide a terrifying backdrop to their tales," reads the blurb for Phil Harrison's book The Hermit Kingdom: Football Stories from Stalinist Albania.  Albania, on the far eastern edge of Europe, followed a rather unique path through the Cold War - and has a unique soccer culture to match that period. Caught between Russia, China and neighboring Yugoslavia, in a country that outlawed religion for all intents and purposes, the stories from Albania between 1946 and 1991 offers the use of pigeons by fan groups, evil Yugoslavian radios, an almost World Cup qualifier, and an erratic dictatorial regime that proudly practiced Stalinism long after Stalin was death. More than nostalgia or chronology, Harrison's book takes us into the stadiums and the city squared of a remote country in a remote time. This episode also features a brief audio reportage from listeners Dan and Archie, who attended the Europa Conference League game Slovan Bratislava vs Sturm Graz - and 3 Albanian contributions to the Eurovision Song Contest. The legacy of the businessmen who built Hong Kong are all over the city. Bankers work in Chater House—named after Paul Chater, the Armenian businessman behind much of the city's land reclamation (among many other things). The Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel sits along Mody Road, named after Hormusjee Naorojee Mody, a Parsi immigrant who helped found the University of Hong Kong. And that's not including figures like Robert Hotung, the half-British, half-Chinese magnate who found more power in his Chinese identity. The story of Hong Kong is more complicated than what the British or the Chinese might assert–countless migrants, from all over the world, came to Hong Kong to build the city and make their fortunes. Vaudine England's Fortune's Bazaar: The Making of Hong Kong (Scribner, 2023) tells the stories of these communities of Armenians, Indians, Parsis, Portuguese, Eurasians, and others who sat between the Anglo-Saxons and the Chinese majority. In this interview, Vaudine and I talk about Hong Kong's story, the city's early Wild West–or perhaps “Wild East” days—and the communities of men and women that built the city. Brooklyn's Wild East (https://www.wildeastbrewing.com) is a brewer's brewery. It's the kind of place that other local brewers go for a beer when they're not working. The lagers are exceptional, characterful more than crispy, and their best-selling IPA is a West coast-style iteration—a stark contrast to the hazy and juicy IPAs that make up the bulk of the offerings from neighbors Other Half or Finback. Cofounder and head brewer Brett Taylor has some strong opinions about brewing lagers—decoction isn't optional, water is very important, and the imperfection of more “rustic” malt offers a tension that makes for more interesting beers. In this episode, Taylor discusses those approaches to lager, as well as their techniques behind West coast IPA and mixed fermentation farmhouse beers, and along the way, he covers: leaning into Czech-style lagers due to the similarity in water between New York and Pilsen designing a brewhouse with decoction methodology in mind treating lagers gently in every step of the process to preserve the delicate flavors using the same yeast in different ways across the lager program brewing West coast and New England IPAs with Conan yeast modernizing West coast IPA recipes the challenges of scaling up farmhouse brewing cultures optimizing for light Brett character and very gentle acidity in foeder saisons achieving juicy yet dry notes in everything from IPA to mixed culture beer And more.
