Support Breaking Walls at https://www.patreon.com/thewallbreakers It's a cold, rainy Sunday evening on January 8th, 1956. We're heading south on Riverside Drive in Manhattan's Upper West Side. On the air is NBC's Monitor with a New World Today discussion about the differences in American life in the past twenty years. The United States is changing. Psychiatry is on the rise as the cold war rages onward. The internal Red Scare has subsided, but Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said this week that the U.S. won't stop testing nuclear weapons, despite pleas from Pope Pius XII on Christmas Day. While nuclear fears are understandable, the U.S. government thinks the USSR's presence in emerging nations means they can't be trusted to follow suit and stop their own testing. In Ecuador today, five evangelical American Christian missionaries were speared to death by members of the Huaorani people after attempting to introduce Christianity to them. Meanwhile, Algeria is in the midst of a war for Independence between France and the Algerian National Liberation Front. It began in November of 1954 and by now it's considered the world's only active war of note. It's a complex conflict characterized by guerrilla warfare and the use of torture. Gunsmoke is far and away radio's highest-rated dramatic show. It airs on CBS Sunday evenings with a Saturday afternoon repeat broadcast. The combined rating of 6.5 means somewhere between six and seven million people are still tuning in from their homes. When factoring in car and transistor radios, nearly ten million people are listening. CBS remains the home for the top-rated prime-time shows. Our Miss Brooks is pulling a rating of 4.3, and both Edgar Bergen and Two For The Money are pulling a 3.9. Meanwhile, on daytime radio, CBS has the twelve highest-rated programs. So where am I heading? I'm a roving CBS producer. I've worked on both coasts, including with Norman MacDonell on Gunsmoke in Hollywood, but last year programming directors Guy Della Choppa and Howard Barnes sent me back home to New York. I'm heading to the City Center at 131 West 55th street. I'm to cover a preview of Shakespeare's King Lear starring Orson Welles. It features Viveca Lindfors and Geraldine Fitzgerald and begins at 8:30PM. I helped with Welles' Omnibus production of Lear on CBS-TV in October 1953. I had drinks with him last week. He kept raving about two things: Carl Perkins' new hit, “Blue Suede Shoes,” and friend Jack Johnstone's production of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. Johnstone directed Welles' Almanac series from the west coast during World War II. I phoned Jack yesterday. He had this to say. Jack was sure to mention that this week's upcoming Dollar story would take place in New York. If all goes well, Orson might be interested in returning to network radio in some capacity. Welles is once again a father. His daughter Beatrice was born last November 13th. He's been looking for more stable projects and wants to get dinner after the performance. Lear doesn't officially open until Thursday the 12th. The City Center was built as The Mecca Temple and opened in 1923. It's part of a small section of galleries, apartments, and performing spaces, but development is possibly encroaching. Last April, The Mayor's Slum Clearance Committee, chaired by Robert Moses, was approved to designate the area just west in Lincoln Square for urban renewal. The residents, many of them Hispanic, have been protesting the decision, but Robert Moses usually gets his way.
There was once a time known as the mid to late aughts, when the culture was at an ebb and bland bros ruled the land. One director, DJ Caruso, bestrode this brief period like a colossus. Look upon his works and sigh heavily! TWO FOR THE MONEY (2005) DISTURBIA (2007) EAGLE EYE (2008)
Two for the Money: Revisit this gripping drama of ambition and deceit starring Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey. Very often we come across films that seem to be familiar for indefinite reasons. There's just something relatable if not reminiscent about their construct or telling that pulls us in and keeps us glued even though the end seems only too predictable. But to be honest, sometimes, predictable can also be comforting and perhaps, is just what it takes to hit the spot. The 2005 drama, Two for the Money is surely one such film and it's our Lost and Found for today
The Old School Hollywood vs. The New School Hollywood. We've seen it many times before – The Color of Money, Safe House, etc. On this one, we got Frank Oz's “The Score” (2001) – Robert DeNiro matched with Edward Norton – vs. D.J. Caruso's “Two for the Money” (2005) – pitting “Hooah” legend Al Pacino […]

You're a lemon. Like a bad car. There is something... there is something inherently defective in you, and you, and you, and me, and all of us. We're all lemons. Game One pitched by a high-priced ace didn't exactly hit the jackpot, yet we'll try it again, hoping Jacob deGrom can bring the Mets back from the edge of the abyss that Max Scherzer (and a sleepwalking offense) pushed the Mets toward in the National League Wild Card Series. Greg and Jeff work through their frustrations, their uncertainties and their residual faith, all of it leading to their usual conclusion of “Let's Go Mets!”

Sports Handicapper Brandon Lang joins us to give us some insight on sports handicapping and his hot picks for Week 1 of the NFL season and his picks for this weeks college football action. On today’s show, Pat goes live from the Indianapolis Colts facility for an incredible interview with the NFL’s leading tackler, probable Defensive Rookie of the Year, and one of the biggest Pro Bowl snubs in recent memory, The Maniac, Darius Leonard. They cover his upbringing and how he overcame the odds being stacked against him, and who he’s looked to for advice. They also cover his thoughts on the Colts season, how all the slights thrown at him are just adding chips on his shoulder, and how he should take the NFL drug testing him as a compliment (6:37-21:09). Pat and Digs also give a touching tribute to Coach Sacco, their high school football coach who recently passed away, and the guys get into a conversation about Pat’s high school playing days. Later, sports handicapper, source material for the film Two For The Money, and friend of the show, Brandon Lang, calls in to give a couple of red hot NCAA basketball picks, chats a bit about his time caddying for Jim Irsay (and inadvertently takes a couple of shots at Gorman), and looks ahead to this weeks NFL slate while also giving some thoughts on the NCAA football playoff (1:02:17-1:25:45). The guys wrap up the show by diving a tad deeper into the NFL games, and give a few more thoughts on the weight loss competition. It’s a great one. Come and laugh with us. Cheers.
Santana and Travis are back again for another week of action. You don't want to miss this one!
Alright, alright, awwwwriiiiight! It’s the glorious month of McConaughmay, celebrating the best Texan export since the discovery of oil. Kicking off this most sacred of months is Two For The Money, a “based on reality“ drama about the world of legalised sports betting. Matt Mac is brought into this shady world by a gambling Svengali, played by the legendary Al ‘hoo-ah’ Pacino. This is one of those movies that’s a slam dunk on paper, but it hit a short stop at the box office, and failed to score with the critics. Time (out) for us to take a punt, and revisit this classy looking drama. But does Pacino act like a walking parody of himself? Will it persuade us to become gambling addicts? And is Matthew’s performance McONaughhay or McOFFaughhay? Join us down the bookies to see if this gambling drama is an odds on favourite, or a waste of a betting slip. Does Matthew McConaughey make you want to lay bets? Get in touch and let us know. The Relatively Speaking Podcast in all its glory, which means you get to enter the weekend with a solid case of the giggles. The New York Knicks are off to a rather surprisingly solid start. However, one Mr. Phil Jackson keeps opening up his mouth-hole to discuss things with the media he probably shouldn't. His latest being the president of basketball operations calling Carmelo Anthony a player who holds on to the ball too much... which is odd when you consider there are two other people on his team who hold the ball longer than him. Do the Los Angeles Clippers stink? No! Lazily crowd sourced segment Ask Me Anything is back (with fake Seal, of course) this week. "Do you think Chris Paul ever wins a championship in such a crowded competitive conference?" "At what point do the Clippers consider getting something for CP3 and BG before they leave in seven months?" "Am I allowed to believe the NBA is fixed to get big market teams against each other in 6/7 game series?" The guys answer those questions in earnest. We'd like to say that the show ended with Jared and Joseph's Week 14 NFL picks, but that would only be a half-truth. After discussing about Joseph's dominance over Jared in the standings, the greatest NFL game-picker this side of Al Pacino in Two For The Money asks Jared a very random, very absurd, very unsettling question. What was the question? Listen if you want to find out! I mean, you can just fast-forward toward the end if you're that impatient.
