Now a point about current volatile market conditions. You should know that in such markets studies show that companies highly rated for their ESG and sustainability scores usually show superior returns compared to the overall markets. Just a thought in these troubled times where we all wish for the troubles around Ukraine to get resolved peacefully and without much loss of life. ------------------------------------------------------------- 1. The Stocks Topping ESG Rankings. And More… Let's begin looking at As You Sow and Corporate Knights' Report: Meet the top 200 companies investing in a clean energy future. By TOBY A.A. HEAPS, ANDY BEHAR, MICHAEL YOW, AND MATTHEW MALINSKY. Here are some quotes. “The Clean200 are the largest 200 public companies ranked by green energy revenues… Geographically… the United States dominated the 2022 list, with 52 companies on the Clean200, while Canada had the second largest share with 18, closely followed by China, which 16 Clean200 companies are headquartered in. On average, 58% of revenues earned by Clean200 companies are classified as clean, which is up from 39% in 2021 and significantly above the 20% average clean revenue for their MSCI All Country World Index (ACWI) peers… $10,000 invested in the Clean200 on July 1, 2016, would have grown to $20,709 by January 31, 2022, versus $20,315 for the MSCI ACWI broad market benchmark and $13,167 for the MSCI ACWI/Energy benchmark for fossil fuel companies.” End quotes. The top five Clean 200 companies are Apple inc., Alphabet Inc., Intel Corp, TSMC, and Iberdrola. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2. The Stocks Topping ESG Rankings. And More… Another good ranking is the just-released 2022 edition of Barron's 100 Most Sustainable Companies. Writing about them is Lauren Foster. Ms. Foster writes, quote… “In the fifth annual Barron's ranking of America's Most Sustainable Companies, shares of the 100 companies on our list returned 34.4%, on average, in 2021, besting the S&P 500 index's 28.7%... 41 of the 100 companies on last year's list beat the market in 2021.” End quotes. Barron's top five are NVIDIA, ON Semiconductor, Crocs, Inc., Applied Materials, and Jones Lang LaSalle. ------------------------------------------------------------- 3. The Stocks Topping ESG Rankings. And More… Now Mavis Babcock at topnewsguide.com has penned this article titled Top 5 ESG Stocks To Radar Now. Here are their names followed by some brief quotes on each one. “1) Viking Energy Group (OTCMKTS:VKIN) is perfect for any speculative investor searching for ESG investments. The diversified green company has made three recent acquisitions; a carbon capture system that produces sellable commodities from carbon emissions, a medical waste treatment device called the ‘OZONE', and a Green Renewable Diesel Production Facility in Reno that it is extremely close to closing on. 2) Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ:MAT) … the stock has gained 15% so far this year… Mattel is now projecting its 2021 net sales of $5.4 billion to grow 8% to 10% in the current year. Adjusted EPS is seen at $1.42 to $1.48. The toymaker also lifted its 2023 net sales growth forecast to high-single-digit from a previous outlook of mid-single-digit growth… Hasbro forecast growth of ‘low-single digit' in both annual revenue and operating profit this year. 3) American Financial Group Inc. (NYSE:AFG) … the stock has jumped 58% over the past year… (and) delivered fourth-quarter 2021 core net operating earnings per share of $4.12, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 38.3%. The bottom line doubled on a year-over-year basis. 4) CNH Industrial N.V. (NYSE:CNHI) … The stock is trading above 34% from its 52-week low and 4% away from its 52-week high. CNH Industrial came out with quarterly earnings of $0.25 per share, beating the Consensus Estimate of $0.21 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.30 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items. This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 19.05%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this truck, tractor and bus maker would post earnings of $0.22 per share when it actually produced earnings of $0.36, delivering a surprise of 63.64%. 5) Ternium S.A. (NASDAQ:TX) Is another stock in the ESG sector which has been showing consistent rise. The stock has moved up 8% over the past one quarter… Benefits of higher steel prices and healthy shipments are likely to reflect on its fourth-quarter results.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Considering green real estate REITS? Well, here's a list also published in Barron's titled 10 Real Estate Companies That Are Both Greener and More Profitable. If this, is you, review this article titled For Greenification in Munis, Try SMI. It's by TOM LYDON and published on etftrends.com. Here are some quotes from Mr. Lydon. “The vast fixed income market is fertile ground for green fund innovation.... Consider the case of the VanEck HIP Sustainable Muni ETF (SMI), which debuted last September as the first exchange traded fund dedicated to green municipal bonds. The actively managed VanEck HIP Sustainable Muni ETF is managed by HIP Investments — a pioneer in the green municipal bond space… ‘HIP Ratings incorporate research that shows which variables are key to improving outcomes. Then, HIP tracks data and metrics related to evidence-based targets and goal,' said HIP Investors founder and CEO Paul Herman in a recent note. (This ETF)… which sports a 30-day SEC yield of 1.27%, holds just 44 municipal bonds. That's the result of a high bar for entry created by HIP Investor's stringent investment criteria and the newness of green municipal bonds. None of the ETF's holdings exceed a weight of 4.77%. ‘HIP Investor's methodology, which precedes the term ‘ESG' by several years, uses five pillars based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs. These five pillars — Health, Wealth, Earth, Equality, and Trust – can be mapped to ESG as well,' adds Herman. Additionally, the HIP's methodology features a dual-pronged approach that focuses on sustainability and education… ‘In the VanEck HIP Sustainable Muni ETF (SMI), HIP Ratings also track the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework, as well as a Climate Threat Resilience score,' notes Herman. California and New York municipal bonds combine for 60.6% of the ETF's weight. (This ETF) has an effective duration of 5.77 years, and 84% of its holdings carry investment-grade ratings.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- This ETF is designed to help fight heart disease while making you money. Here's how Now here's another specialist ETF that might be of interest to numerous ethical and sustainable investors. The article's titled This ETF is designed to help fight heart disease while making you money. Here's how. It's by Josh Meyers and found on cnbc.com. Here are some quotes from Mr. Meyers' article. “'The IQ Healthy Hearts ETF (HART)… is designed to help investors do well while doing good,' New York Life Investments' Wendy Wong told CNBC's 'ETF Edge' on Monday. HART's current portfolio includes companies such as UnitedHealth Group (UNH), Apple (AAPL), Novartis (NVS) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). The ETF, powered by Index IQ, sees a portion of fees go toward supporting the American Heart Association's fight against heart disease… ‘The American Heart Association uses [the funds] to support its Social Impact Fund,' she said. ‘This addresses health inequalities in under-resourced communities.' New York Investments' support has accelerated the growth of the Social Impact Fund by nearly three times, according to Wong. The HART ETF is significant in the ESG space as well, ETF Trends CEO Tom Lydon said in the same interview. Lydon called the partnership a great example of ‘[making] sure that we're not only doing right but feeling good about it at the same time and maybe learning how we can help our family do a better job of staying healthy.' HART is outperforming the S&P 500 so far this year, down about 5% versus the benchmark index's 6% loss.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Other Honorable Mentions – not in any order 1. From the cardboard to chemo, Tim Lawson's journey of resilience started as a young teenager battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and now he joins us as the newest member of the #YearOfTheVet family! November 2002… a 17 year-old aspiring B-Boy gets diagnosed with cancer… May 2003: remission… 2006: a Hard-Charging Marine. Not too long after separation... a suicide survivor...This conversation takes Tim from behind his mic, and gives him the platform to talk about himself for once—and thank God for that! The conversation we have is so rich with knowledge and personality, and we cover topics as deep as depression, to the reason we should wear pants during an interview.Tim created his foundation in Digital Media in the days before podcasting and social media were popular forms of entertainment… and what that means is that he’s been honing his craft for the better half of decade, having created and ended more projects than Thanksgiving dinners you’ve eaten since Y2K. What drove him was the love he had for talking to people, as well as being able to freely create creative content—and throughout that time he got to experience the highs, and he also really experienced the lows. And because of his journey, he’s able to come onto #YearOfTheVet and share the lessons learned during his road to the top!Tim and I talk transition (of course), entrepreneurship, podcasts… but we also talk about the importance of seeking out someone to be able to talk to, as well as the expense of “finding yourself.” A lesson learned from this conversation is to not keep your mouth closed when you want or need something, and that it’s ok to rely on your network for not only times of abundance, but also in times of need.As it pertains to dealing with depression, which Tim is well versed in, he mentions that awareness is key, and suggests that an individual should seek out therapy when feeling good and happy, and not as a last resort—or when depressed. And that’s mainly because therapy should be seen as a tool, and not as a weakness or a burden. And speaking of tools… Tim shares a few of his favorites, that he feels will help individuals be better versions of themselves!I had a phenomenal time talking to the man with the Golden Voice, and I hope that you enjoy this conversation with Marine Corps Veteran… Mr. Timothy Lawson!---------------------------Show Notes (5:14) The Voice of an Angel (6:01) The Grand Ol' Man of Podcasts (6:48) Pre-Marine Corps Tim (7:25) Who Needs School When You Have a Cardboard Box? Nutrition is perhaps one of the most talked about topics not only in sports performance but in very day life these days. We know that is accounts from (depending on who you talk to) anywhere from 60%-90% of how we look, feel and perform. When it comes to athletic performance it is obviously more challenging to have a meal on the go and a number of years back we saw the introduction of nutrition “gels”. Todays guest is a man who you could say has made these gels not only his fuel for his sports performance but also his fuel for life. Tim Lawson is the founder of Secret Training and has been in the sports nutrition business for a number of years. In this show Tim talks to us about how he got into the nutrition business, what’s important when looking for quality products and a whole load of things about the food industry that caused us a certain amount of surprise that’s for sure. Enjoy the show. Check out Secret Training here https://www.secret-training.com/

Today’s show is an interview with a listener, Tim Lawson, and we’re talking about Vision and working to execute that vision. But there’s a few other announcements I want to take care of before we get on with the interview. Denver meetup. Denver one-day workshop. Oregon Coast. Walla Walla and Palouse Workshop. Final call for Blue images via the facebook group. That wraps up the announcements, let’s hop on over to my conversation with Tim Lawson and this idea of vision. This is an enhanced episode, so if you have the ability to see the photo on your device, and if you’re not driving, go ahead and take a peek now so you know what we’re talking about, it’ll also have been posted to the facebook group a few days ago so you can also find it there. Topic: Tim Lawson, welcome to the show… Tell me about your image. Let me describe it first for the listeners, but then I just want to know how to came about this image. It’s a young woman in a cape and mask standing on a rock hill holding a large branch with a lantern over her shoulder. The stars are behind her with a significant swirl going on. Tell me about how this image came together and how you also worked in Photoshop to make this all happen.
Enjoy is previously Patreon exclusive episode featuring Tim Lawson from The Bettor Life. This was recorded in April 2019. We talk about gambling, Atlantic City, and so so much more.
New section, listener submitted images. Lots of people submitted images. Thank you! Tim Lawson, Eli Temchin, Linda Maier, Alyce Bender, Jon Whitaker, Colin Mayer, Chris Bartell, Benjamin Stuben Farrar, Mike Sirach, Joe Vargas, John Scane. The images I’m choosing are from Colin Mayer. This image is from St. Kilda, Scotland. I really was drawn to this image because it somewhat made me think of the beehive huts in Ireland. But not really. These are quite a bit different. Anyway, the rock texture really comes through well in the foreground building. The entryway is small and you’d have to nearly crawl in it seems. There’s moss or grass or peat on the roof as well and that’s cool, it gives a certain ambiance that is nice and authentic feeling. There’s buildings that are somewhat blurry in the background. They provide a nice background. And behind them there’s more hovels like this foreground element and then in the mid-ground there’s a rock wall that connects to another little moss-covered room. Pretty much the only thing I’d change about this image is the heavy vignette. I think this image needs a vignette, but it needs to be less heavy and probably it should have a custom application as well. You can do this in Lightroom or PS where you brush in the vignette right where you want it. The lower right corner feels a bit empty and that’s probably OK. An image usually benefits from having some negative space. The DOF is small or shallow enough to keep the attention on the foreground building that we don’t really need to worry about the background elements distracting too much. They provide a good stage for the whole scene. Eli Temchin submitted one of an elephant. It’s B&W as well, and it’s quite striking. I love the texture coming through in the skin of the elephant. We see enough of the creature to certainly know what it is, but we only see a small portion of this beast, and that’s a good thing. By zooming in we’re looking more at shapes and forms to communicate the subject, but they are impartial shapes and forms. It’s not complete. This leaves more for the brain to figure out and work on. It’s good that way. There’re two things I’d likely change to this image. I think I’d move the camera slightly more to the left. In the view as it currently is, we almost see the second eye. This leaves a bit too much negative space in the forehead/trunk area. By moving it, we’d have more of the shoulder area on the left side of the frame showing and the eye would be pulled out of the center of the frame. It’s almost in the horizontal center and by moving it a bit to the right we’ll create a bit more tension in the image. Also, the depth-of-field feels a touch too shallow for me on this one. The eye feels slightly soft. But we’d want to keep the crustiness on the front of the face too, so a bit more DOF is needed to accomplish that. Linda Maier submitted one of ice on Yosemite Creek. I decided to also add this image because, well, the ice is likely to soon be melting and I’m really glad to see a good image like this coming together, and that the effort was put in to get out there in this weather and be inspired by what we see. This looks like a mini river flowing from left to right for me. It’s got a great starting point in the upper left corner with some strong elements pointing down and a bit to the right. As the eye travels down the ripples in the ice take over and they bring you off to the right side of the image. There’s a lot of chaos in this image too. I’d say the ice pattern is stronger than texture in this image. But texture certainly does come through nicely. There’s some grasses on the lower portion of the frame that provide context of location. It’s fairly high contrast with lots of highlights and lots of shadow areas and the lines are just squiggling all over the place. One change I’d make on this image would be to crop the rock element out of the top portion of the frame. I find it a bit distracting and letting the ice go off to “nothing” as it were would suggest a larger icefield. Leaving the edge unresolved like that forces the mind to fill in the blanks. Don’t think of it as lying. Think of it as eliciting the imagination! Thanks again to everyone who submitted images. I love it. Next topic for listener images The topic this next time is the color red. However red manifests itself in your image, that’s what I’m looking for. A Quick Announcement/Reminder Before we get to the main topic, I wanted to cover something that recently came up in the Master Photography listener group. I’ll likely make a mention there as well to try and ensure everyone is aware of this. That is, a listener asked us why things were so quiet over there at the IP websites. Especially the IP+ website. I’ve also had a listener ask about the rGPS app that was also published by IP. As far as the app is concerned I was able to contact Jim Harmer a while a go and he gave me a bit of info I can share. Basically the question was, “will it get updated anytime soon?” I don’t recall the exact question from the listener, but that was the main point. They liked the app, but wanted to see some updates happening. Jim stated that he’s buried in other projects but he’d “REALLY” like to do more with it. He also pointed out that there’s so much good data in it that has been added by users. But with the other projects it’s not going to receive any attention in the near future at least. The most recent listener concern was regarding IP+. The biggest thing to ensure everyone is clear on is that there’s no formal business relationship between IP+ and myself, and as far as I know, none of the other podcasters in the Master Photography group either. I contributed one video on camera cleaning and tripod cleaning when I first came on as a contributor. But any videos produced were “one-time” deals and for the last few years I’ve been focusing my efforts on providing my own solutions. Most of you know about the print course I’m developing. That’s still on schedule for an early April release. I’m striving for April 2. I’ll be spending my spring break on finshing it up and getting it ready for everyone. But I continue to spend pretty much each Friday and Sunday getting content produced either for the podcast or this course. And it’s been about three weeks since I last published an episode, so you know where my attention has been going JMe being quiet does not mean I’m taking it easy, that’s for sure! If you’re an IP+ member and you want to know more, I’m afraid I won’t have any answers for you. With that, let’s get on to the main topic. I’m going to blend in the idea of reading the light and making the most out of your shoot as I talk a bit about my trip to Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. For the details on this part of the show, please check out this blog post on my main site.

Christopher Evanson knows he’s usually the only Coast Guard veteran in the room. He’s used it as an opportunity to educate others on the culture the Coast Guard holds. Tim Lawson has never interviewed a Coastie in his time of podcasting, and is now taking the opportunity to do so. Chris and Tim discuss the following: What is a warrior? How does the Coast Guard embrace the warrior mentality? Why did he choos the Coast Guard over the other branches? What challenges does Chris face? How is he inspired? Enjoy! www.locknloadjava.com www.lawsonentertainment.com
Carl Churchill is co-founder of Lock-N-Load Java. Tim Lawson (host) and Carl collaborated on the idea of Fuel For Warriors. That’s how we got here with this podcast. In this episode, Carl talks to us about Lock-N-Load Java, their “coffee for troops” program, and how you can get their delicious coffee. Stay tuned tomorrow for Tim’s exclusive interview with Medal of Honor recipient, Kyle Carpenter.
Join us today as Josh and Ben talk about this week's interview with Tim Lawson of Veteran Empire. Tim Lawson not only provided Ben and Josh with a ton of valuable points, but he also inspired a great conversation. Ben and Josh reflect on what they know and what they've heard from people about life in the military. (Josh served and Ben has many friends who served). Your hosts also talked about Tim Lawson's viewpoint on honesty versus transparency. While both honesty and transparency involve telling the truth, when you tell it makes the difference. That viewpoint has changed the way Ben thinks of himself, considering himself a transparent person. Now, he sees himself as honest because he doesn't always offer up details, but he doesn't hide them when asked. Josh also provides an example of when transparency isn't always the best solution according to robots in Interstellar (on Amazon and iTunes). Josh and Ben also talk about the type of life that a small business own lives. Is it just a pie in the sky, all the time is free time, and we can do whatever we want when we want? While it is more flexible, it isn't exactly that life. Ben and Josh also talk about Tim Lawson's podcasts (he hosts more than one), and specifically 1, 2, Many: Veteran Suicide. The timing of Tim's episode and this show is interesting because a friend of Ben and his wife (who is a Vet), committed suicide last Friday. His family set up a fund to help pay for these unexpected funeral bills. As always, a special thank you to The Strand for our intro and outro music!
We have an amazing guest for you today, Tim Lawson. Tim is a Marine Corps veteran, college student at American University, found and owner of Lawson Entertainment, a company that has 4 weekly podcasts. The Veteran Empire Podcast for example was nominated for a 2013 Podcast Award in the Culture and Arts Category. He's been able to do all this before the age of 30. At 17 he defeated cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma, it was an experience that really helped him have determination and perseverance. He actually feels blessed to have cancer at the ripe age of 17 with his immune system able to recover fairly quickly after treatment. He believes that he is the product of his top 5 people in his life, which include his co-host Brandon of Brandon's Bromantic Comedy, his girlfriend, and colleagues in his life. He's working towards true freedom currently with his efforts as an entrepreneur, an internet marketer, a podcast host on several shows, and a full time student at American University. He's driven to control his time and run his life on his own terms. The Utopia he is working toward is building his business so he can maintain his lifestyle that he has currently has ripe with freedom and being able to spread his wings while working anywhere. "The more freedom I have , the more freedom I have to do the things I want to do. " Compared to being a Marine, he now has to create his own opportunities and has to work hard to make everything work. These are sets of challenges that he relishes. He loves the challenge of figuring out entrepreneurship and the opportunities it yields. He gives his girlfriend the credit for providing a level of peace that he had never felt before.. Awww.. how sweet. "Every day is a vacation day but every hour is a working hour." Aka the life of an entrepreneur Tim's 3 Value Bombs for Utopians: Time control is way more important than time management The opposite of sadness is peace, not happiness Be in constant pursuit of what that 3rd title is (ex: veteran, podcast host) Thank you Tim for your service and for being on the show! This guy is a stud and you'll definitely want to listen to this great episode in all its entirety. As always, a special thank you to The Strand for our intro and outro music!
Tim served five years in the United States Marine Corps, spending the majority of his career as a Marine Security Guard protecting U.S. embassies in Algeria, Russia and Peru. He was inspired to start the 1, 2, Many Project after seeing media coverage of the epidemic of veteran suicide concentrate on the statistics rather than the human beings caught inside the crisis. As a veteran and a survivor of suicidal behavior, Tim wanted to change the conversation to engage the broader community in proactive solutions.
From Podcast to Movement Today’s episode of In The Trenches features Timothy Lawson of Veteran’s Empire and the founder of 1, 2 Many: Veteran Suicide - which is a podcast series telling the stories of veteran suicide. Tim’s story of starting work with Veteran’s Empire is an encouraging tale that shows us success is a matter of breaking out of the mold, taking bold action, and ultimately doing the work. Lawson, a prior service Marine, is completing his Broadcast Journalism degree at American University, while working with Veteran’s Empire and 1, 2 Many Veteran Suicide. In today's episode, you’ll learn about: The impact starting a podcast has had on Tim's life How Tim crowdfunded his podcast (and why it matters) The work of Veteran’s Empire and 1,2 Many to help vets reintegrate back into civilian life You'll also hear Tim speaks passionately about the work of 1, 2 Many Veteran Suicide and hopes the message he is spreading will put an end to veteran suicide. If it resonates with you, please share this podcast and help spread the word. Life as a Veteran Timothy Lawson served five years in the USMC, including a short stint in the Moscow US Embassy. Currently completing a Broadcast Journalism degree at American University as a full-time student, Tim hosts the Veteran’s Empire podcast and is creating the 1, 2 Many Soldier Suicide project, as well. Tim says he got started in Veteran’s Empire by volunteering to help with their social media. “I was getting out of the Marine Corp, had a blog called A Couple Good Ideas, focused on healthy aspects of relationship.” Later, he offered to help Veteran’s Empire with their social media, “I just thought that Veteran’s Empire needed a podcast.” Starting the podcast without permission (the result of Tim Ferris’ Four Hour Work Week) “instead of asking them if I could do the podcast, I just started doing one and I jut put their name on it.” The organization gave no resistance, “they thought it was a great idea and thy pretty much told me to run with it, keep everything in line with the mission of Veteran’s Empire.” Tim says he launched that podcast about the same time as when Cliff Ravenscraft arrived on the scene. The show organically grew in influence and in guest credibility. “It went from talking to my friends on the show to reaching out and getting guests that had a name,” he says. Tim found Veteran’s Empire after a fellow Marine sent him the logo. As soon as he got the logo he knew it would be huge. “So I asked to get involved. Somehow I actually started running their Twitter. That’s how I actually got involved with Veteran Empire to begin with,” telling them, “you need a social media presence, no one’s running your Twitter, let me run that.” Becoming a Podcaster Tim says he’s launched a total of five podcasts, with four currently being updated. With the Veteran’s Empire podcast, Tim says he was completing a podcast when he came to the realization that “this is what I should be doing… I continue to pursue it more than anything else in my life.” Since that time, Tim has created Romantic Comedy - a weekly podcast, which gave birth to the Capital Experience, which gave birth to the 1, 2 Many Veteran Suicide project. About three weeks into his work with Veteran’s Empire Tim started podcasting. The first rendition of the podcast was, in Tim’s word, “success-esque” - inspired by the Tim Ferris book Four Hour Work Week. Saying he realized the value of Veteran’s Empire “if we promoted veterans and what they were doing.” “Back then,” he continues, “there was no other podcast that was focusing and promoting veterans specifically in their post-military career.” After creating the podcast, before even having been approved by Veteran’s Empire, "I kept going with it, and as soon as the guys at Veteran Empire realized how much more attention they brand was getting through the podcast, I quickly became … officially a member of Veteran Empire." Tom says the story is a great lesson for entrepreneurs. “Be proactive about that kind of stuff,” Tom says. Tim says he started interviewing friends who were doing cool stuff, “I didn’t have to go very far to get a guest.” Then people started recommending guests to him before he reached out to Marine Aaron Chaffs of Love and the Wild. “I thought it would be fun to talk to a reality TV star, and he responded back to me, which I didn’t expect at first. That interview was the first bridge that I had ever been connected between my world and the entertainment world." Tim didn’t realize that people were so easily approachable. Later, Tim landed Marine veteran Shannon Ihrke, who’s now the Loop Rock Girl in Chicago and has been in and on the cover of Maxim Magazine. "When I got her on the show and the guys (at Veteran Empire) realized that one, I was able to reach people that were in a sense inspiring in the veteran community, and two, the people I was getting in touch with were either successful or on their way to becoming successful, that affiliation had a lot of power." Shannon’s return to the show after her success was when he says he realized the real value in building a strong network. Another celebrity who has demonstrated the respect others have for Veteran Empire is UFC fighter Tim Kennedy. "He does plenty of interviews, but it still looks good for us for him to come interview with us…. when I ask an author or model, or something like that, while they’re still an amateur, and they move on to become a professional, they’re going to speak really well on us, and it’s going to look good for use to have that affiliation,” Tim says. 1, 2 MANY PROJECT Tim says he started the 1, 2 Many project while waling around the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. “I started thinking — for some reason, veteran suicide was on my mind — just the stats and how the media was covering the 22 a day, 1 an hour… .it was right around the tim when the first leg of the V.A. scandal really hit mass media and that was a big thing.” Saying the VA crisis started to bug him, Tim says he became concerned that “no one was talking about practical solutions to this. It was like we were overcomplicating the whole thing.” Saying he decided to create a podcast “because i’m not going to go run a 5K and think it’s going to save someone’s life,” Tim describes what he thought 1, 2 Many would be like. Using Kickstarter to help fund the original project, intended to conduct interviews during college Summer Break, Tim used the Kickstarter campaign to get the word out about his project and then used the funds to support himself during the summer while he traveled all summer to conduct the interviews. “The project was happening, whether Kickstarter got funded or not. It was just the matter of the level in which is was going to happen." Since started the project, Tim says several changes have been made from the original program to what it is today. 1, 2 Many launched in June 2014, with his own story of personal battled with suicidal behavior. “Every Monday since,” Tim says, “a new story has come out, whether it’s been a veteran who experienced suicidal behavior and how they got out of it where they sit down now, or it’s been a friend of a family member who lost a veteran to suicide.” Tim says his Kickstarter campaign attracted the attention of the American Legion Auxiliary. “They heard that I was doing this project and they had a conference coming up in three weeks, and wanted me to find someone in the D.C. area who had lost a veteran who’d be willing to come up and speak.” Lawson explained to the program official that three weeks was not enough time to arrange such appearances, and that most who had recently gone through such loss or struggle probably wasn't ready to go public. So, he tells them, “how about you just have me come up and talk, I’ve talked to a bunch of veterans, and I’m doing this project.” With the validation of his Kickstarter campaign, Tim was invited to the conference, “and I’ve raised thousands of dollars behind this project and there’s obviously an audience ready for this.” Results of the 1, 2 Many Podcast Tim explains that the evaluation of his podcast, 1, 2 Many, is one of the objective evaluations of his business. “From what I’ve learned, simple things save lives. And, when I tell you these three things, you’re going to wonder why we’re not doing more of this. This is stuff, these three things that I preach to my live audiences and through the podcast, that I believe that we could use to really save, not only the veterans, but the people around us, from depression and suicide.” Stating he learned these three things and their effectiveness as he’s had some more experience with military personnel who have struggled, Tim says one of the three things is empathy. “Most people actually just want you to understand that they're sad, and they want to make sure that it’s ok for them to be sad.” He says it’s ok for vets to be sad if transitions back to civilian life have been difficult, “and, even though your friends around you look like they’ve been successful coming out of the military, there’s a chance they’re experiencing the same thing, so you should not feel like you’re isolated in this frustration.” Empathy is something which should be shared with others even before there’s any sign of suicide, says Lawson. Second, Lawson says he has learned, as a result of his 1, 2 Many podcast, is renewed purpose. This is very important, according to Lawson, because when soldiers separate from the military, it’s hard to find a position that will make them feel as important and depended upon as when they were in uniform. “When I was an E-2 or E-3,” he says, “I had more responsibility than I did in any of my jobs when I first got out of the military.” He says that lack of a sense of responsibility, or feeling that someone is depending on you is detrimental to a soldier’s psyche. The third thing Tim Lawson says he’s learned through talking to soldiers, their families and experts about soldier suicide is that soldiers need mentorship, “on both sides,” he says. The advice is something any business coach or business person will tell you - it’s good to have a mentor, and it’s good to be a mentor. “so why aren’t we suggesting people who are getting out of the military find a mentor?” he asks. Advice for Struggling Soldiers Tim says it’s important for a soldier to focus on those things that make them feel good. Relying on advice from James Altucher, Tim says “if you don’t feel good, think about what makes you feel good. If it’s laughter, maybe watch some stand-up comedy.” Tim says depressed soldiers need to find ways to get away from just focusing on the negative aspects of life. “If you realize this is the way you’re doing down, it’s not easy to tell someone what’s going on in your life, it really isn’t,” he says, “I would never discount that… but there are things that you can do to let people know that you need a little bit of help, or you need some more involvement that could really benefit you.” One of the ways you can find happiness is through a hobby. Tim refers to Ralph Randolph from the Discovery TV show, “Devil’s Riot’. “He was on a panel we did in Nashville, and he talked briefly on motorcycle clubs, and how a lot of veterans join motorcycle clubs because they’re given a role inside that club.” He says even if that role is Treasurer and they have to balance a checkbook once a week, the soldier knows they have a task to accomplish and that the other guys in the club are spending on them to do it. Lawson says it puts them back in a unit. “We don’t have to wait for signs of suicide to intervene, we can provide empathy, sense of purpose and mentoring long before we see depression.” Advice for Friends and Family of Struggling Soldiers For those who love the soldier that’s struggling, Tim offers some advice as well. “If you know that a veteran… anybody… comes out, and they’re processing out of the military, talk to them. “Ask them what their kids like to do in their spare time. Show interest in their life outside of military. If there’s one thing people who are suffering mentally and emotionally dont’ want, is for that to be the focus of attention.” “If I came to you and said, ‘hey, I’m going through some emotional things and I’m starting to contemplate some scary stuff,’ I don’t want the next five times of you and I interacting, for that to be the first thing that you bring up. That’s just going to drive me nuts.” He says the lines of communication will collapse and drive their self-esteem even lower because of how they think you perceive them. He suggests that you ask all sorts of different questions, in order to get them talking and thinking about something else. He reminds those loved ones, “you don’t have to be a superhero or a therapist. Or be able to admit that you need help. There’s a lot of proactive ways to be doing this, and they’re things I believe we should be doing long before we see emotional and mental stress.” The Future of 1,2 Many Podcast Tim says he will continue to tell powerful stories of soldiers struggling with suicidal tendencies. “Mondays are the stories. Wednesdays, I share a short essay I’ve written on my thoughts on suicide, whether they’re in my personal life or the observations that I’ve made through the conversations and interviews that I’ve had. Then on Fridays, I will start doing a short, five or ten minute Q & A podcast.” That podcast will feature questions from Twitter, Facebook from when he speaks publicly and other avenues. “I plan on incorporating a non-profit called 1, 2 Many branded the same way, sort of, this umbrella over several different causes, and I’d like to have some sort of programming. I would like to have some sort of programming that not only addresses veteran suicide, but also campus rape, maybe human trafficking. I feel like I can get enough interviewees on that. It’s actually something else I’ve been interested doing programming on, things where I feel like America just sucks at having a conversation on.” “There aren’t any real actions for people to take to be a part of the solution to any of these problems,” Tim says, “so I would really like to see 1, 2 Many start doing both recorded and live programming that changes the conversation in all those arenas.” Connect With Timothy Lawson Tim invites you to listen to his podcast at on iTunes.
