He played college football for the Maryland Terrapins and was selected 12th overall by the San Diego Chargers in the 2005 NFL Draft.  He earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in his first season and recorded 39+1⁄2 quarterback sacks in his first three seasons, also making three Pro Bowls as well as two All-Pro selections. He was hampered by injuries his next three seasons, and the Chargers waived Merriman midseason in 2010. He was picked up through waivers by the Buffalo Bills that season, but he only played minimally with the Bills due to continued injuries. He was released by the Bills before the 2012 season before they re-signed him midseason. He retired at the end of the 2012 season.

Willie Buchanon played 11 seasons in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers and San Diego Chargers. He was selected 7th overall in the 1972 NFL Draft by the Packers and in his first season, was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.  He was named to the Pro Bowl in 1974 and 1978.  After seven seasons with the Packers, Buchanon moved to San Diego and finished his final four seasons with the Chargers. After his football career ended, Willie was named to the San Diego Chargers 50th anniversary team and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.  Today on the podcast, we talk to Willie about his NFL playing career, growing up as a pastor's kid and living his life as a follower of Christ. NFL – Hurts, Jefferson, Mahomes among AP NFL MVP finalists Jalen Hurts, Justin Jefferson and Patrick Mahomes are finalists for The Associated Press 2022 NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year awards. The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 9. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league completed voting before the start of the playoffs. Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Bengals QB Joe Burrow also are finalists for MVP. San Francisco 49ers edge rusher Nick Bosa, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones and Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons are the finalists for AP Defensive Player of the Year.      Bill Maas was the Chiefs first-round draft pick in 1984, the fifth player taken overall. He lived up to his first-round status, being named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year despite missing two games. After a career-high seven sacks in 1985, he matched that total the next season and was awarded his first Pro Bowl nod. He went back again to the Pro Bowl in the strike-shortened 1987 season after getting six sacks and scoring a touchdown off of a fumble recovery. Maas got off to a fast start in 1988, getting four sacks and a safety in his first seven games.      His 40 career sacks are tied with Mike Bell as the eighth most in Kansas City Chiefs history, as of 2020, and is the most by either a defensive tackle or nose tackle. Bill Maas is the first nose tackle in Chiefs history to make the Pro Bowl. He was the first Chief ever to win a Rookie of the Year Award. During his career, Maas won acclaim for his relentless pass rushing ability and was selected twice for the Pro Bowl.    In this fun podcast Bill takes us through his football, broadcast and commercial real estate careers.
