The Wayans family has been associated with film and television comedy since the 1980s and Keenan Ivory Wayans is the patriarch of that talented group. After almost graduating with an engineering degree, Keenan pivoted to Hollywood with his good friend Robert Townsend, starring in the superb satire about the life of black actors called "The Hollywood Shuffle". From then on Keenan would mix film triumphs ("I'm Gonna Get You Sucka'!) with groundbreaking tv work ("In Living Color"). His comedy is urban, raunchy, and very, very funny. In recent years, Keenan has worked more behind the camera, often featuring family members in his casts. Find more clips below as always, and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Keenan? Keenan has spent so much time as a sketch actor, director, and producer that it's easy to forget he is a fine standup as evidenced by this 1983 set on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. https://youtu.be/OU91m_TtTTw?si=3V7_Pk2gVqRS4x22 Keenan found a kindred spirit (and early comedy writing partner) in Robert Townsend and their work bore fruit in the form of the 1987 satirical gem "Hollywood Shuffle". Here's a sample, featuring their take on the "Black Acting School". https://youtu.be/HoqmCwp95Q8?si=b9aFZqJpCI09J59C In 1990 Keenan launched his signature show "In Living Color". Conceived of as an edgier SNL, with a multiracial cast, In Living Color launched the careers of Jim Carrey and Jamie Foxx, as well as Keenan's siblings Marlon and Damon. This bit about a sketchy shopping service is one of the show's enduring classics. https://youtu.be/55aHvFD-I80?si=hbBGhkZTEHOQA5L-

Tonight, we host our very special guest: Stephen Tobolowsky! Stephen Tobolowsky is one of the leading character actors today. He has appeared in over 200 movies and television shows. He has played everything from Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day to Sandy Ryerson in Glee. He has appeared almost naked as Stu Beggs on Californication and has worn the same suit for seven years as Principal Earl Ball on The Goldbergs. Stephen currently appears as Dr. Leslie Berkowitz in the new generation remake of Norman Lear's One Day at a Time. Seasons 1-3, at present, are still available on Netflix. PopTV and CBS aired Season 4. Stephen has always been a storyteller. In sixth grade, he won his school's storytelling contest and over that summer won the award as best storyteller in the City of Dallas (13 years old and under division.) That impulse led him into writing. He wrote the screenplay for True Stories with David Byrne and Beth Henley. He wrote and performed his storytelling films Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday Party and The Primary Instinct. His labor of love has been The Tobolowsky Files, created with producer David Chen. What began as a behind-the-scenes movie podcast has become a sometimes funny, sometimes compelling portrait of a human life - as described by Miles McNutt here. The Tobolowsky Files is available at tobolowskyfiles.com and on Apple Podcasts. Early episodes were also previously broadcast on KUOW 94.9 in Seattle, on WFPL in Louisville, KY and many stations through Public Radio International (PRI). In April 1990, the first episode of In Living Color aired on Fox TV changing the face and tone of television. The half hour sketch show created by Keenan Ivory Wayans was called a Black Saturday Night Live for the hip-hop generation. It ran at 9:30 Sunday night on Fox right after the networks two hit shows The Simpsons and Married with Children. Thanks to that placement and hype around the show, 23 million viewers tuned in to the inaugural episode. Nearly 30 years since In Living Color went off the air its impact can still be felt throughout today's film and eco-system. Two old friends of the podcast return this week for Shat The Movies' take on "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka": Black Girl Couch commissioned the 1988 blaxploitation parody, and The King Bee is our guest host. Keenan Ivory Wayans' directorial debut led us to question the reality of the blaxploitation metaverse, declare every person's right to lampoon their own race, celebrate a knockout cast and determine that Damon is the least funny Wayans brother. In this episode, the Shat Crew also discusses a black Ryan Reynolds, whether wigs count as lying, whether Gene goes wild when Ash is gone, the comedic power of giant hats, Gene's first fart joke, suicide by soup and choosing your beating. This episode I caught up with Media Guru InkkLyfeTV and we just talked candidly about a lot of things we have been noticing in media and inside the African American culture. Check us out as we tackle some tough topics and continue to push the needle for journalism. Todays Topics include: Capitalism in the WNBA as the league threatened to eliminate a franchise for providing chartered flights for them. Chartered flights that were paid for by the organization only helped the well-being of players. Black Content Creators like Keenan Ivory Wayans paved the way for so many and others that are continuing the cycle of elevation African American content and the ways they are utilized in Pop American Culture. Bel-Air vs Fresh Prince: A discussion on the two hit TV series and what makes them the same but yet different and the reasons it is catching on with today's viewers. We speak on the writers, wardrobes, and even casting focuses that create the layers that makes us love these television series. CHECK OUT THE SHOW & MUCH LOVE!

Ahoy, Motherfuckers! This movie revolutionized black comedies and, in my opinion, assisted in opening up more opportunities for black actors and actresses outside of the scope that they had been locked into. This was a labor of love created by Robert Townsend. He literally paid for this out of his own pocket, as well as writing this with Keenan Ivory Wayans, and spent seventeen days over two years putting this together, and it is a biting satire that still evokes laughter 34 years later. Enjoy. With Carolyn on the verge of a bionic hip and Ashlee on the verge of a losing some good sanity, the two chose the unwind this holiday season with a 90s action comedy, Keenan Ivory Wayans' A Low Down Dirty Shame. What's its historical context? How does it function as a potentially progressive vehicle and be questionably problematic at the same time? Let's talk...
An absolute FIRST occurs during our podcast when Shelly Martinez decides to attack one of the comedies nearly on everyone's favorite list, Dumb and Dumber. What's that first? Something that knocks @KevinGootee and @KevinIsrael_NJ socks right off and never in a million years would've thought happened. “OH MY GOD! WE HIT A BOOT!“On this episode of Retro Grade Podcast, we take a look at a movie that meant a lot to the theater-going audiences of 2000. A movie that also meant a lot to Jorge's childhood. A movie that revived the spoof genre itself. We are talking about none other than, Scary Movie, directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans. This movie was one of the highest grossing films of 2000, earning more than ten times it's humble budget of 19 million dollars. The movie was so successful, a sequel was rushed out within the next year, and similarly themed spoof movies to follow suit until the genre eventually wore out its welcome with audiences, long after it did with critics. Not only was this important for the genre, but also, at the time of it's release, the highest grossing movie from a black director. It turned relatively unknown actors Anna Farris and Regina Hall, into movie stars. On the other side, re-watching this film in 2021, the film definitely doesn't hit the same. In fact, it might be the one movie that's aged the most, despite only being 21 years old. We talk about how the film relies on shortcuts by poking fun at marginalized groups (Doofy, Miss Man, and Ray) in an unsophisticated, almost mean-spirited way that just makes the film very hard to watch at times. We also talk about how some of the classic spoof gags work, but so many of them just seem to fall flat. How can a movie that has made people laugh so hard, and served as a launching point for people that Hollywood is definitely better for having, leave us feeling so icky? Give us a listen and find out!Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o
Tommy Davidson is a comedian and actor who came to fame in the 1990s as one of the stars of the groundbreaking sketch comedy TV show “In Living Color,” the first network TV sketch comedy show created by an African American writer-producer-star (Keenan Ivory Wayans) that featured a multicultural cast. Tommy has also appeared in dozens of TV shows and movies including “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls,” and he tours the nation as a comedy headliner. On the podcast this week, Steven and Sean are gearing up with far too many guns to take on the baddest Mr. Big this side of Sex and the City in Keenan Ivory Wayans' 1988 film, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Viewer (or podcast listener?) be warned: this is a straight-up spoof film. This is not the sort of high-brow comedy film that Sean was expecting, nor was it solely a drama or action film. It feels kind of strange to say, but this is a piece of work that has some deep layers. Indeed, very much like an onion, as the saying goes. It's a tale as old as time. A highly decorated man comes back from the military to find that his brother has been killed by a surplus of gold jewelry. He discovers that the dreaded Mr. Big has been filling the street with the shiny stuff and vows to take down this lowlife piece of scum. After reuniting with his dear, ass-kicking mother and his beloved girl, he forms a supergroup of black heroes from the ‘70s to back him up in his quest for revenge. Along the way, he tussles with hooligans, gets into fights with little people, and hangs out with freaking Isaac Hayes. You have everyone's permission to dig it, friend. If this film sounds more serious than what it actually is, then you're in good company. Sean had no idea what he was in store for, but in his defense, the trailer for the film paints a different picture of its content (make sure to check it out in the links below). Once you can get over its absurdity, you'll undoubtedly have as good a time watching this as Steven did. There's a lot of silliness to be had in this film. It is a film that parodies the blaxploitation movies that were so popular back in the ‘70s. It does so with obvious love and respect. It doesn't look down on its source material. It puts a ridiculous spin on it instead. If that isn't a perfect recipe for a B-movie bonus episode, then I don't know what is. Make sure you listen to find out if we thought this one was brilliant, a blunder, or a flunder of a film.
In life, it's important to not take things too seriously. Comedian Tommy Davidson Tells His Story Today on The Total Media Network's Dr. Christopher Hall Show, Dr. Hall and Neil Haley will interview Comedian Tommy Davidson. In Living Color just passed its 30th anniversary, and we recently published the memoir of Tommy Davidson, one of the original cast members of the Emmy Award-winning show. In his candid memoir, LIVING IN COLOR: What's Funny About Me (Kensington Books) Davidson recounts his powerful life story, from being literally discarded in a garbage bin – saved and raised by his adoptive mother – to being discovered at The Apollo Theatre, to becoming a pop-culture touchstone. He takes readers from tryouts to its cast of notables (Keenan Ivory Wayans, Jim Carrey, Jennifer Lopez, Jamie Foxx, David Allen Grier, among many!) to its place in television history. A world apart from the predominantly white sketch show SNL, the New York Times calls it “a precursor to “Chappelle's Show” and “Key & Peele.” He shares his unique perspective on weathering the rollercoaster ride of his personal and professional life: making it in Hollywood, being an integral part of television history, on fame and family, and the power of positive karma in his life and career.
In this episode, Greg and his special guest, James, introduce Susan to one of their favorite late 80s comedies, Keenan Ivory Wayans' "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." The blacksploitation parody stars Wayans with actors of the blacksploitation genre: Jim Brown, Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas, and Isaac Hayes. Other actors in the film are Kadeem Hardison, Ja'net Dubois, John Witherspoon, Dawnn Lewis, Damon Wayans, Clarence Williams III, John Vernon, and Chris Rock. While Greg and James reminisce about the many times they've watched this highly-quotable movie, Susan explains the movie's origins and how it almost did not see the light of day and surpassed the studio's expectations for it. Greg throws us off the conversation more than once when he learns Susan didn't like the movie "Twins," the film against which "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" opened. Susan also flags this movie as another Roger Ebert one-star review as the group reacts. As always we select, our top three moments from the film. "I can do it in iambic" Hollywood Shuffle (1987) written, directed and starring Robert Townsend with Anne-Marie Johnson, Helen Martin, Keenan Ivory Wayans and John Witherspoon. Next Time: Hamilton (2020)
1987 saw the release of one of the few films of the decade to be written, produced, directed by and starring Black artists. Hollywood Shuffle, co-written by Keenan Ivory Wayans, is Robert Townsend’s satirical take on being a Black actor in Hollywood (who is not Eddie Murphy). How much has changed, if anything? Dan and Jon seek the answer to that question, as well as what role satire can play today in the ongoing struggle for equity in America, as they discuss this landmark film and the lasting influence it has had.Next Episode: The Running Man (1987)
On this week’s episode of Black Girl Film Club, Ashley and Britney are sneaking into the movies to discuss Hollywood Shuffle (1987)directed by Aquarian legend Robert Townsend and starring Robert Townsend, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Ann-Marie Johnson and John Witherspoon. The guys continue to catch up on what they've been up to bringing in the new year. Predictably, the guys have been catching up on movies and shows that they normally wouldn't have time to watch. We mention two Netflix projects, Eddie Murphy's My Name Is Dolemite Kevin Hart's Don't Fuck This Up. We start the show discussing if we have evolved into a culture of oversensitive people? Where are the The Jetsons? And, why haven't we achieved that level of technology in 2020? We then start to discuss Tesla's newly designed Cybertruck and some of the technological advances that we have been able to witness. Then the great debate of the show has us discussing the cost of integrity. How much would it take for you to sell out to star in a Popeye's chicken sandwich commercial? We also managed to possibly cross the line on Lizzo, Stevie Wonder, Kenan Thompson or maybe Keenan Ivory Wayans, Quavo, Eddie Griffin, Katt Williams and heaven help us, even our enslaved ancestors. This Week's Libation is El Tesoro Tequila Resposado and has an amazing effect on the crew. You'll hear all this and more in this week's episode of Decoding 40. Be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Patreon. Want to be our Whiskey Warrior of the Week? Or, do you have an event or product that you would like us to attend, sample and promote? Anchorman Ted Koppel asked him why, at the time, there had been few black managers and no black general managers in Major League Baseball. Campanis' reply was that blacks "may not have some of the necessities to be, let's say, a field manager, or, perhaps, a general manager" for these positions. Elsewhere in the interview, he said that blacks are often poor swimmers "because they don't have the buoyancy." Koppel says he gave Campanis several opportunities to clarify, ("Do you really believe that?") or back down from his remarks, but Campanis confirmed his views with his replies. Inc., producers of Ebony, Jet, and Fashion Fair cosmetics into an international powerhouse. Born and raised in Arkansas, Johnson’s family moved to Chicago when he was a teen. He excelled in school, received a scholarship to the University of Chicago, and began working at an insurance company. He got his start when his mother used her furniture as collateral for a $500 loan to start his first publication, Negro Digest, in 1942, which served as the launching pad for him to create the largest African American publishing company in the world. Seemingly, there wasn’t a single African American household in late 20th century America in which you could not find a copy of Ebony or Jet on the coffee table. In September 1955, Johnson made a decision that forever shook the world. Not one to vacillate on any issue, he revealed to millions the mutilated corpse of Emmett Till, a Chicago youngster who had been bludgeoned and shot in Mississippi for reportedly whistling at a white woman. Shortly thereafter, other black publications followed Jet’s lead in publishing the photos. It galvanized clusters of African Americans nationwide to protest such senseless acts of violence. In one bold move, the determined 37-year-old publisher helped launch the civil rights movement. 30. Open Comments 31. Crack became popular on the “streets” with dealers because it turns powder cocaine into an extremely profitable and addictive drug you can now sell to anybody, rich, poor, black, and white. Users liked it because it is a cheap and very potent. 70. Epidemic background – In 1981, crack started showing up in southern states, like Miami and Houston, and on the west coast, Los Angeles and Oakland. (Coastal/Port cities) Crack was basically an unheard-of drug until 1985. That year was the first time the term "crack" was used by the press, November, 29 New York Times article - A NEW, PURIFIED FORM OF COCAINE CAUSES ALARM AS ABUSE INCREASES, By Jane Gross. Within a year, over one thousand stories showed up in the press. By 1987, The DOJ said crack was in 46 out of 50 states. 71. How did it Happen? Movie Scene: Hollywood Shuffle, by Robert Townsend and Keenan Ivory Wayans 104. Robert Townsend, writer, producer, director, and actor was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 6, 1957, the second oldest of four children to Shirley and Robert Townsend. Growing up on the Westside of Chicago, Townsend was raised by his mother in a single parent home. As a child Townsend watched TV where he learned to do impersonations of his favorite actors. In 1974, at age 17, he joined Chicago’s Experimental Black Actors Guild X-Bag Theatre and studied at the Second City comedy workshop for improvisation. In 1975, he had a brief uncredited role in the 1975 movie, Cooley High. After high school, Townsend enrolled at Illinois State University, studied for a year, dropped out and moved to New York to pursue comedy. 105. Townsend met Keenan Ivory Wayans while they were both auditioning at the Improvisation Comedy club and the two formed a lifelong friendship. Keenan left for Hollywood, Robert stayed in NYC, and in 1980, at age 23, he almost landed Eddie Murphy’s spot on SNL. Keenan soon talked him into moving to Hollywood and pursuing an acting career. 106. He performed on comedy specials such as Rodney Dangerfield: It’s Not Easy Being Me and landed minor roles in films such as A Soldier’s Story (1984) with Denzel Washington, Streets of Fire (1984) with Diane Lane, and American Flyers, a 1985 movie starring Kevin Costner. 107. The auditioning process in Hollywood, along with other industry processes, were making Robert and Keenan very frustrated. Tired of the run-around and shuffling back and forth for opportunities that were patronizing and demeaning, they decided to make their own movie. At age 30, without any funding beyond the money saved from his earlier work, he co-wrote, directed, and starred in the critically acclaimed 1987 film, Hollywood Shuffle. Later that same year he directed his old friend Eddie Murphy’s stand-up special Raw. In 1991 he directed and starred in The Five Heartbeats, a biographical drama based loosely on the lives of the rhythm and blues group, the Dells and Temptations. He also directed and starred in The Meteor Man (1993) with James Earl Jones and Bill Cosby and went on to co-create the television series The Parent 'Hood (1995-99) 108. Open Floor 109. Television scene: Eyes on the Prize- An American television series and 14-part documentary about the Civil Rights Movement in the United States that originally aired on PBS in 1987. 113. Produced by Blackside, Eyes on the Prize tells the definitive story of the civil rights era from the point of view of the ordinary men and women whose extraordinary actions launched a movement that changed the fabric of American life, and embodied a struggle whose reverberations continue to be felt today. Winner of numerous Emmy Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award, an International Documentary Award, and a Television Critics Association Award, Eyes on the Prize is the most critically acclaimed documentary on civil rights in America. 114. The 1987 original airing: America's Civil Rights Years 1954–1965 (6 parts) Pt. 1 - Awakenings (1954–1956)": Chronicles the murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi and the Montgomery bus boycott in Alabama. Pt. 2 - "Fighting Back (1957–1962)”: Chronicles the school desegregation crises at Central High School by the Little Rock Nine in Arkansas and by James Meredith at the University of Mississippi during the Ole Miss riot of 1962. Pt. 3 - "Ain't Scared of Your Jails (1960–1961)": Covers the Nashville sit-ins and boycotts that sought to end racial segregation at lunch counters in Tennessee and the Freedom Riders efforts to end segregation on interstate transportation and terminals throughout the southern United States. Pt. 4 - "No Easy Walk (1961–1963)": Examines the failed attempt by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in Albany, Georgia to end segregation and the subsequent lessons learned to win a major victory in Birmingham, Alabama during the Birmingham campaign. The film also covers the March on Washington, one of the largest political rallies for civil rights in United States. Pt. 5 - "Mississippi: Is This America? (1962–1964)" Chronicles the murder of Medgar Evers in 1963 and the murders of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner in 1964 in Mississippi. The film also covers the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) attendance at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City during the United States presidential election of 1964. Pt. 6 - "Bridge to Freedom (1965)": Examines the effort to restore voting rights in Selma, Alabama during the Selma to Montgomery marches. 115. Review from Common Sense Media: - IS IT ANY GOOD? - This documentary series is wonderfully narrated by Julian Bond and peppered with feisty first-person accounts from the people who lived it. Watching early film of Martin Luther King, Jr. as a 26-year-old clergyman at the beginning of his historic odyssey and seeing the young, future Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall just after his victory in Brown vs. the Board of Education are highlights in a film that consistently strives for excellence, integrity, and clarity. It's a fascinating, emotional journey marked by moments of sadness, disgust, pride, and ultimately joy. Eyes on the Prize brings a crucial part of America's recent past to life. 116. About Henry Hampton: Hampton was born in St. Louis and as a child suffered from polio. He obtained a B. A. degree from Washington University in his hometown. He was a renowned producer whose television documentary Eyes on the Prize set the pattern for nonfiction accounts of the civil rights movement. His films include The Great Depression and America's War on Poverty, both of which were critically acclaimed. Hampton founded and ran Blackside Productions; the United States' largest African American owned documentary film Production Company. His work focused on the lives of the poor and disenfranchised and chronicled the 20th century's great political and social movements. 117. Open Floor: 118. Question: None 119. Vote: Favorite/Best/Most Important Pop Culture Item of 1987
023 - We decided to mix things up a little this week and choose a film we had a feeling might be a real stinker in our 2019 adult eyes, The Glimmer Man. Spoiler alert: we were right. Let us be clear, you don’t have to watch the film to enjoy this episode - it’s really just a great vehicle within which to chat about all-round weird unit, Steven Seagal. The most interesting things about this movie are most certainly the things that that happened around it. We cover Seagal’s bizarre on set behaviour, his history of rubbing co-stars the wrong way and investigate some of the Hollywood and martial arts urban legends out there that surround this mysterious fellow.
Mo Alexander has played the comedy game for almost two decades and has headlined all over the country in top clubs and theaters. He has also opened for Keenan Ivory Wayans during his 1999 comedy tour where he was in the running with Wanda Sykes for the opening slot and Keenan chose Mo. He also had his own theater show, The Mo Funny show in Las Vegas with his partner in crime and comedy Matt Davis. In 2010 he participated in the San Francisco comedy competition where he missed making the semi finals by a .006 percent. Mo has also released 4 cd’s of original material (2000) The Mo Files, (2004) Evolution, and (2008) Nappy Headed Hoes and other Fcc Infractions, (2012) Just in Case the Mayans are Right and one compilation (2010) Teabaggin. In Feb 2012 he was featured on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom radio program where he has been invited to return soon to earn the moniker of a Bob & Tom regular. Alexander's style is to offend those people and ideals that have offended him; ideals such as ignorance, narrow-mindedness and for that matter, the easily offended. Alexander's comedy in a fun contradictory social study. He's lovably evil; techno-geek with social skills; scooby doo after he ran away from the mystery machine gang and started hanging out with the old men scaring the children away. The only predictability from his shows is that laughter and thought will ensue. Check him out. Buy him a shot or ten of higher end Tequila (no Cuervo!) and watch the antics of a true entertainer push the limits of what you thought was possible in comedy... without ending up at your local police department. Demand this delightfully twisted, insightful and fun comic to come around to your town, because until you see him, y'all

They honestly don't make movies like this anymore. A very well made and funny Keenan Ivory Wayans gem with a semi-memorable cast of characters.
