Full episode on our Patreon. Vinnie Stigma is a foundational figure in the hardcore punk scene and the longtime guitarist of Agnostic Front; a band that helped define the New York hardcore sound. Their music touches on the realities of an early New York, social change and independent thought. Stigma's guitar work was central to releases like United Blood and Victim in Pain, albums that became cornerstones of the hardcore genre. Stigma was involved with Madball, a band fronted by Roger Miret's younger half-brother, Freddy Madball. He also launched a solo project under the name Stigma, releasing albums such as New York Blood and For Love and Glory. In 2024, Stigma published his autobiography, The Most Interesting Man in the World. Godfathers of Hardcore.   On this episode we speak to Emmy Nominated and Award winning Film, Commercial & Music Video Director / Producer / Editor Ian McFarland. Having started his career as a professionally touring musician and then a film editor, Ian brings a particular understanding of structure, music, pacing and emotion to his projects. He started touring the world in bands at an early age, performing at a wide range of venues: from punk rock parties in backyards and living rooms to major European Open Air Festivals.  In the past 10 years he has directed numerous music videos for Grammy-nominated international acts, created Emmy-nominated and award-winning films aired on VICE, ESPN, MTV & LOGO. He has also worked with top brands, ranging from BOSE and Fidelity to The Boston Celtics and Bank of America. Miret has become a suburban Arizona family man, but has a lot of demons that are revealed throughout the film. How does one age gracefully, or at all, in the mosh pit of midlife? Ghost Cult recently chatted with musician and director Ian McFarland, whose latest film is the acclaimed documentary, The Godfathers of Hardcore (McFarland & Pecci Films). The film is a candid and deep examination of the lasting influence of Agnostic Front on Hardcore music and the enduring friendship of Roger Miret and Vinnie Stigma. In addition to making the rounds and earning accolades in the global film festival circuit, it has been showing on the Showtime network in the United States and Canada ahead of its wide release on April 30th. We chatted with Ian about what inspired him to make the film, how his professional work as a commercial director prepared him for the different medium of making documentaries, the lasting bonds he built with Roger and Vinnie, and the future of the project. Hoya has been a long time friend of ours and we appreciate him taking the time to sit down with us and discuss growing up in New York, the Dynamo Open Air festival in 1995, raising a family while being in a full time touring hardcore band, his continued love for the hardcore scene and more.  Madball has been a driving force in the hardcore scene since 1988. The band was started by members of Agnostic Front as a side project to allow vocalist Roger Miret’s brother, 12-year-old Freddy to sing. The band has had its share of members including Vinnie Stigma, Matt Henderson, Will Shepler, and Mitts Daniels, but the constant has always been Freddy and Hoya. Despite a year-long break up in 2001, the band has continued on and continues to tour and release new music.
