Summertime comes wanting to try out some new hobbies, indoors or outdoors.I'm pretty sure the kids have probably asked you to go ahead and buy a canoe or new rackets to play racquetball or tennis. Or maybe they wanted to do some knitting or build a Lego castle. And while all that sounds like a lot of fun, it comes with a price. And it comes with space. You have to have somewhere to put all the stuff that comes with these hobbies. So what are you going to do?How are you going to try out some new hobbies but not have the house be a cluttered mess? Yet, so much of the guidance aimed at parents and families is filtered through a "first family" lens. I am totally guilty of this! And I understand that this leaves a massive segment of the population under-equipped to navigate an additional layer of complexity to everyday household challenges. So on this episode of the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast, we are chatting all things decluttering with a step family perspective. But, even if you are in a “first family”, there's a ton of helpful info so don't skip it. And while I don't have direct experience decluttering in a step-household, thankfully, my expert this week does and she is here to help us out. Dr. Michaela Bucchianeri is a clinical psychologist, speaker, and coach living in the Twin Cities, Minnesota with her husband and two stepsons. Blending the science of psychology and the art of stepmom-ing, Michaela helps women in this unique role to create a stepmom identity that's all their own – so they can worry less, shift their energy to whatever lights them up, and start having way more fun! Through her work, she's witnessed firsthand the stress and anxiety caused by managing clutter in a stepfamily environment. And in her own 10+ years as a stepmom, she said she knows all too well how surprising and sensitive decluttering decisions and conversations can be. It is a great conversation and Michaela was so wonderful to chat with. You are in for a treat of a conversation about thoughtful decluttering as a stepmom. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: Why decluttering as a step family is so complex Ideas for decluttering that do not involve getting rid of things How to defuse these emotionally charged conversations around stuff Why we need to be more curious when decluttering Michaela's humbling decluttering story ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? If you're like most busy parents, the answer is no. It's perfectly understandable to see why our sleep suffers - families take a lot of time, energy, and effort to nurture and grow. Add in adult responsibilities like working, social commitments, and activities and it's easy to see why most of us pull back on our sleep when our schedules get full. But, my expert guest is here to tell us why we should be working backwards and start with making sure we're getting enough sleep. When we're well rested the other pieces in our lives just fit together better and we get to be the better versions of ourselves we're striving to be. As a Registered Nurse, Certified Clinical Sleep Educator, Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality and Certified in Clinical Sleep Health, Terry Cralle has devoted much of her career to sleep health and wellness. An author, sleep health advocate, and co-founder of a four-bed sleep disorders center, Terry serves as a national consultant and speaker to a large number of organizations and clients. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Start School Later, Inc. and the Advisory Board for the American Sleep Association. She holds Bachelors' degrees in sociology and nursing and a Master's in healthcare management. Terry is the co-author of the book, Sleeping Your Way to the Top as well as a children's book Snoozby and the Great Big Bedtime Battle. Terry clearly knows a thing or two about the importance of sleep! Most people don't think very highly of decluttering and try to avoid it if they can. I get it. Going through our belongings can be emotionally draining and overwhelming. But, living with clutter causes a lot of unnecessary stress in our lives so culling the things we don't need is important too. So how do we overcome our resistance to decluttering? Maybe you need a different approach. That's what I'm exploring in this week's podcast episode where I talk about the benefits of decluttering with a positive mindset. Instead of focusing on what you're getting rid of, this approach shifts the focus to what you want to keep. Positive decluttering allows you to be intentional about the items you choose to keep in your home and in your life, while giving you permission to release the items that no longer serve you without guilt or shame. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will help you discover: 5 steps to positive decluttering The benefits of decluttering this way Why it's better to focus on what you want to keep The importance of a vision when decluttering What you can do to declutter difficult spaces ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? This type of clutter that is made up of items we hold onto for emotional reasons, such as old photographs, love letters, and childhood toys. It is this emotional connection that makes it so difficult to let these things go. We often believe our memories of past events or the special people in our lives live in these objects because we can't help but think of these special times and people when we see these objects. While these items may hold a special place in our hearts, they also take up physical space in our homes and mental space in our minds - both of which are precious in their own right. The key is to find a balance between holding onto what is important and letting go of what is no longer serving us. That's where today's guest can help us. Krista St-Germain is a Master Certified Life Coach, grief expert, widow, mom and host of The Widowed Mom Podcast. When her husband was killed by a drunk driver in 2016, Krista's life was completely and unexpectedly flipped upside down. After therapy helped her unfurl from the fetal position, Krista discovered Life Coaching, Post Traumatic Growth and learned the tools she needed to move forward and create a future she could get excited about. Now she coaches and teaches other widows so they can love life again, too. No one is there to offer you praise on a regular basis. And then once I became a parent, I had to make bigger decisions without training or prior experience so it was tough to know if I was making the right choices. All of that takes a toll on your confidence and makes it harder to reach your goals - no matter how big or small they might be. Thankfully, my guest this week on Wannabe Minimalist is well versed in helping people, like us busy moms, with boosting our self esteem. Risa Williams is a clinical psychotherapist and a productivity coach, specializing in time management tools and anxiety reduction skills in Los Angeles. She's the author of the self-help book series, The Ultimate Toolkits for Psychological Wellbeing, which includes: The Ultimate Anxiety Toolkit, The Ultimate Self-Esteem Toolkit, and The Ultimate Time Management Toolkit. She's also the host of The Motivation Mindset Podcast, which features productivity tools and examples of how they work in real life. She's been featured in Forbes Magazine, Business Insider, Parade Magazine, Real Simple, Wired Magazine, and HuffPost, and she writes articles for Breathe Magazine. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: How to wrap yourself in kindness Tips for talking to yourself What you can do to notice your strengths A unique look at how we balance our highs and lows Practical ways to boost your self esteem ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? This has become a road block for her and is keeping her from letting go of her stuff and enjoying the benefits of a clutter free life. And if there is one thing I know, it's that when one person has a question, others do too. They might ask it in a slightly different way, but the question is still there. Perhaps you've dealt with the guilt of letting something go in the past because it was expensive. Or maybe you want to make sure your donation doesn't end up in the landfill. Or perhaps you have a sentimental attachment to something and while you no longer want the item in your home you still care what happens to it. The way it generally comes up is that you want your stuff to go to a good home…whatever that means. This week's podcast episode starts with a look at a few reasons behind why we feel this way and then gives you 4 ways to take action and start making those donations. Would you consider them picky eaters who only want to eat a few “kid-friendly” things? This is a common struggle with parents and can be extremely stressful when all you want is to do for your kids is nurture, care for them, and help them grow up to be strong and healthy. My guest this week on Wannabe Minimalist is well versed in helping parents bring magic and fun back to the table and make dinnertime a pleasant experience for the whole family. Dr. Sam Goldman supports parents in their dream of helping their child have a happy and healthy relationship with food. Because when children have feeding challenges and just won't eat, parents are often left feeling lost, concerned, and like they're doing a bad job. Through her 10 years of experience as an occupational therapist, she has seen first-hand how these eating difficulties not only affected a child's health but their family dynamics. In her business she teaches parents how to create peaceful, no-pressure mealtimes where you can spend time connecting with your family instead of focusing on food battles snd how to help your child overcome “sensory issues” at the table so they can start exploring and trying new foods. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover: What food rules you should ditch Tips for getting your kids in he kitchen What you can do make kids interested in meal time How a cluttered kitchen can affect our sensory processes Fun ways to encourage kids to play with their food without the mess ********************** Music: Fresh Lift by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Happy by MBB https://soundcloud.com/mbbofficial  Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/Happy-MBB  Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/g6swHZbWtRc  ********************** Subscribe & Review Subscribe & Review Are you subscribed to the Wannabe Clutter Free podcast? Summertime comes wanting to try out some new hobbies, whether it is indoors or outdoors. I'm pretty sure the kids have probably asked you to go ahead and buy a canoe or buy some new rackets to play racquetball or tennis. Or maybe they wanted to do some knitting or build a Lego castle. And while all of that sounds like a whole lot of fun, it comes with a price. And it comes with space. You have to have somewhere to put all of the stuff that comes with these hobbies. It seems like a simple question, but it's a question I hear often which means that it's not as straight forward as it seems. Sometimes people really don't know what stuff to classify as clutter. They think that anything that's above the basic necessities is considered clutter (and that might be true if you are a hard-core minimalist, which I am not). Other times, someone might be looking for an excuse to keep something or a reason to get rid of something. When you are in this state of being unsure about clutter, a definition or a rule can help you make that decision and feel good about it. So it's no wonder that this question and the desire for a definition on clutter keeps coming up. If you've ever wondered what clutter really is or if you can have stuff as a minimalist, this episode will help you figure it out. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- The factual definition of clutter and why it's not enough- Why physical clutter is not the only issue- What you can do to look at your clutter differently- How I categorize clutter so it's easier to tackle- The first step I take to minimize my clutter that works wondersSubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? When her doctors couldn't tell her the cause, she took it upon herself to dig into the products we all use everyday. What she discovered is pretty shocking, upsetting, and unbelievable. Do you wish your kid's room could be organized and tidy? You're not alone! I get asked all the time about how to declutter and organize kid's stuff. It seems like the smallest among us have the most stuff or at least it's the most in your face (and everywhere in your home). No matter if you have one child or five, the fact is kids typically come with a lot of stuff. It is so easy to accumulate toys, little clothes, books, games. Kids grow fast and each stage comes with new belongings. If your children have never been given boundaries around their stuff, it's going to be really difficult to go from a whole house stuffed to the rafters with toys, gadgets, gizmos, and squishies to those sparse instagram images you covet. The good news is, you can get there, it's just not happening overnight and that's okay. Some days I feel like I nailed it and other days feel like a failure. However, my journey toward minimalism has had some wonderful overlap when it comes to the rest of my life - outside of the stuff in my home. It has helped me become more intentional and that includes how I spend my time and the relationships I have. Of course the most important relationships in my life are those with my partner and that with my daughter.Since, there is always much to learn in this life, I brought in an expert when it comes to the parent/child relationships we have. Dr. Sarah Bren is a licensed clinical psychologist and mom of two, whose passion is helping parents find their inner confidence and raise healthy, resilient kids. She is the host of the podcast [Securely Attached](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/securely-attached/id1570870737), and the creator of the website [drsarahbren.com](http://drsarahbren.com) where she offers resources such as guides, workshops, and digital courses. She is the co-founder and clinical director of [Upshur Bren Psychology Group](https://upshurbren.com/) in Pelham, NY where she treats parents, children and families.Sarah has such a calming presence and you call tell she practices what she preaches. It was a fun conversation and I learned more about attachment parenting, gained confience in some of the tehniques iI have been using in my own life, and found encouragement for the developmental stages that are awaiting me as my daughter grows up and matures. That was me this week. Life was busy because we had just gotten back from our spring break vacation and my calendar was full of things to clean up from before we left and to make up for being off for the week. You know how that goes. But then, my daughter woke up sick. And with the last 2 years dedicated to the pandemic (and thankfully avoiding illness) we were totally out of practice with what to do. To say that it completely took over my day would be a good way to put it.There was a problem though - I did have a couple non-negotiable things that had to happen. Instead of letting the complete change of my day ruin everything I worked through it and it ended up being not only a productive day, but a good one too.I recently spoke about the best ways to organize your days and I think the universe was giving me this opportunity to put that advice into practice. It worked and I also uncovered a few more lessons for how to actually keep my cool in the midst of a crazy day. That's what I want to share with you. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- My 5 step plan for getting my day back on track- What I say to myself to keep a clear head- The biggest aha moment I had with the concept of time- How I plan for the unexpected- The #1 thing I recommend you do before tackling a bad daySubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? Or worse, does it seem like no matter what you try it's a drop in the bucket compared to the problem so you're not sure it even matters? Those are the questions and issues my guest on this episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show found himself pondering as he looked at the different ways he could try to help the environment while downsizing to a tiny home. What started off as a project to build his own custom tiny home, turned into a new-found mission of trying to figure out how to have a bigger impact on the world around him. Michael Bartz is the producer and host of the In Over My Head Podcast that follows his journey to lower his environmental footprint by building a 175 square foot off-grid Tiny Home. He felt overwhelmed by trying to "save the planet" and wasn't sure if all his downsizing and minimizing was really making a difference so he decided to bring in the experts. Michael and his partner Sara live in their Tiny Home on a farm in southern Alberta, and when he's not podcasting, he can be found pursuing his creative endeavors of acting and writing, or being active and hiking in the Rockies.I thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with Michael and he opened my eyes to some really interesting ideas when it comes to how we can actually make a difference when it comes to the environment. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- What it took for Michael to downsize from a traditional house to a tiny home- The catalyst that pushed him to build his own tiny home- The 2 surprising things Michael thinks we should all do if we want to help the environment- What he does with his bulky sporting equipment in a tiny home- How minimalism has shaped Michael's lifeSubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? I am the decluttering go-to in my group so it's pretty common for people to come to me when they have questions about what to do with their stuff, how to organize something, or issues letting go of the things in their home. And what I heard was pretty typical. She told me that she's tried to declutter in the past, but has basically given up at this point because no matter what she tries her home becomes messy again in a week, month tops. She also told me her husband's not really on board and her mom buys her kids anything they want, even though she has asked her mother to stop. Sound familiar? However, instead of jumping in and saying that decluttering was no use, I asked her if her stuff was in order. And here's where it hit home. My friend said she didn't see the point of getting her home in order when she felt all alone. There's just so much to do that she felt like she failed even before she started. My heart broke a bit for her. The good news is, there are ways to fix this decluttering situation, so I gave her tips to help her solve these issues and I'm sharing that same advice with you because as we were talking, I realized that she was making the same mistakes I see over and over. And if she was making these mistakes, it's likely you are too. **Let's fix that so you can move forward in confidence and no longer feel like you are alone on this journey. It's a bit like the philosophical question of the chicken and the egg. We're not sure which came first? In this instance the question becomes does life better because you declutter or do you declutter as you get closer to your dream life? And maybe you think it's a hard question because everyone's idea of a dream or ideal life is different. Yes, that is true. What seems ideal for one person might be the opposite of what you would consider a dream. The good news is that our definition and visions of dream lives actually have very little to do with the steps we need to take to get there. So no matter if you want to be a homeschooling parent or prefer to send your children to school - you can use these steps. If you want to travel the world or explore your city they will work for you too. They will even work no matter how much or little money you have in the bank. The 3 steps outlined in this episode will help you create a clear vision for your life, let go of the comparison trap, and create space so you can enjoy the life of your dreams. Let's explore how we can create a life you don't feel like you need a vacation from. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- Why the first step to getting the life you want is knowing what it is- How to create goals that improve your whole life- The 10 life categories you need to consider when creating your vision- The simplest way to get out of the comparison trap- How decluttering makes it easier to live your dream lifeSubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? This is one of my favorite places to start. Yes, some people say to start in your bathroom because there are fewer emotional decisions to be made there and there is less stuff to deal with, but for me the sense of accomplishment and joy I feel when looking at an organized closet is worth the effort. When my closet is organized, I am able to start my day off on the right foot. I can see all of the clothing I own and it makes it easier to choose an outfit for the day. When my day begins with less stress it carries over throughout my day and makes the other areas of my life easier too.Adopting a capsule wardrobe has seriously helped my closet organization issues and taken this to a whole new level, but you don't have to go that far to see amazing results. These 4 easy steps can help you get your closet under control no matter if you are a fashionista and love to have the latest and greatest trends or if you are more like me and enjoy a simple wardrobe that mixes and matches. The principles are the same and before you know it your closet will be clutter free, organized, and feeling amazing.Opening those doors just might become one of your favorite parts of your day and any day that starts with a smile is a winner in my book. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- Why the first step to organizing your closet isn't even touching your clothes- How to create space for everything you love with the container method- An update to one of the most trusted organization methods- The easiest way to declutter - not you do not have to take it all out at once- Why making your space is important and what it does for long-term organizationSubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? You might not think that how we spend our money or the thoughts we have about money have anything to do with our stuff.Or maybe you just think that only those who over spend and buy stuff they do not need are the only ones who experience the link between spending and clutter. But, for many people - myself included - the way we think about money, even when we do not over spend, has a giant impact on the items in our homes. In addition to over spending, the other big issue when it comes to money and stuff is under buying. They are on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to spending money and both cause problems in our homes and lives. But, how can spending less money and under buying be a problem when it comes to clutter and having an organized home? Turns out, there is a balance between buying enough so that you have what you need when you need it and buying too much, causing too many piles to build up in your home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- Why under spending actually causes you to stress more about the things in your home- How over spending leads to mounds of clutter and unwanted bills- Examples of under buying and over spending to see if either affects you- The difference between under spending and under buying / over spending and compulsive shopping- 5 simple things you can do to overcome either under buying or over spendingSubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? That's how we learn and grow. And my journey toward a clutter free life has seen it's share of minimalist mistakes and frugal failures. In fact, I am a pretty frugal person. It's just in my nature and the idea of buying less (and thus spending less) is probably what drew me to minimalism in the first place. However, what has kept me on this journey is a simpler, more intentional life that is just easier to manage. When you have less stuff, there is less to worry about, less to clean, and less to get in your way.Unless, you take it too far. When that happens, the practice of having less can actually make life more difficult. This is what a minimalist fail is.And when you waste money - when your intention was to save money...that is a frugal fail.My hope is that by sharing some of my most memorable minimalist mistakes and frugal failures, I can help spare you from these same troubles. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- Why spending the least is not always best- How coupons actually work and why I never use them- What I do now to save money on cable and streaming services- The problem with DIY projects- My horrible travel hack failure and what I will never do againSubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? The changes are big in branding - so the name of the website and look of it will be changing, but the content and the reason behind what I teach and discuss will be staying mostly the same.A few weeks ago I had this nagging feeling in my gut that I was not getting my message out to the people I could really be helping. While I relate to minimalism and love the tenets of living with only the things I feel are necessary to enjoy my life, I know I have a LONG way to go until I would feel ready to call myself a true minimalist. However, there is something about the label of minimalism that makes me cringe just a bit. I've never felt extreme enough to help people who want to be hard-core minimalists. But, for the people who want to live with less stuff, the word minimalism puts them off as it feels too unattainable. So in order to help the most people (especially those who need it the most) find this website and podcast, I am changing the name. It's all laid out in this episode and I hope you enjoy it. Don't forget to explore the newly designed website too. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- Why I decided now was the right time to change my brand- How the change will affect this podcast (or not)- The steps I took to evaluate the name of my business- What people in my real life think when I talk about minimalism- The big goals behind what lead to this changeSubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? I've moved over 20 times in my life and while I am pretty skilled at it, moving with a school-aged child made me understand that my most recent move was going to be different. So I called in an expert to help me along the way. Ali Wenzke is the author of The Art of Happy Moving: How to Declutter, Pack, and Start Over While Maintaining Your Sanity and Finding Happiness and a real estate broker with Baird & Warner in Winnetka, IL. Ali and her husband moved ten times in eleven years, living in six U.S. states. Known as the “Marie Kondo of moving", Ali's advice has been featured on TV, radio, and podcasts as well as in Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, Today.com, Real Simple, Fast Company, Parents Magazine and many more. Ali is happily settled in the Chicago suburbs with her husband and three kids and for now doesn't plan on moving any time soon. Our discussions starts with the move that lead Ali to buckle down and declutter and I push her to give us her best tips on moving with children, what to do when other family members don't share your same vision, and what to do when you get into your new home. Yes, moving can be stressful, but it doesn't have to be. In fact, it can be a time of rejuvenation and reinvention of one's self. And even if you have no plans to move, you can learn to declutter like you are moving and enjoy the benefits of a lighter home. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- The secret to making a big move easier- A fun game to help your kids declutter- How to get your family on board with decluttering for a move- Why you don't have to move to reap the rewards of thinking like a mover- The best tips for organizing your new home quicklySubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? Often with those goals comes new hobbies. And with new hobbies comes more stuff. There is a term that encapsulates this increase in stuff. It's called clutter creep and it means the accumulation of new things as we go through life. It's the adding of more to your space without getting rid of something else at the same time. Without discipline, it's easy to end up with a home overrun by all of the stuff you need to do these hobbies or accomplish your new goals.Figuring out what to do with this happens - because trust me it will happen - is not only possible, but there are steps you can take to keep it from happening in the first place. The good news is you can still be a minimalist and have hobbies. You can even have more than one hobby. It depends on what other stuff you have, the space you have in your home, and what ultimately brings you joy. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- Why hobbies are important and should not be cut out of your life- How to evaluate your hobbies- What I do to limit hobby clutter creep in my home- Why starting small is smart- What minimum viable amount means and why it's the key to keeping clutter at baySubscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast? Does it make you think of stark walls? Do you think it means living with the least amount of stuff possible? That's not what minimalism means to me. For me, minimalism means freedom. Freedom to buy less and thus need less money. Freedom to travel more instead of buying a large home. Freedom to change careers instead of owning a fancy car. Being a wannabe minimalist is someone who lives intentionally, but is not defined by how much or how little they own. A wannabe minimalist is intentional about what they allow into their homes because they know once it's in, it's ten times harder to get out. This episode gives you a peek behind the curtain and the three life changing events that drew me to minimalism. I rarely speak so candidly about how I live my life and what really goes on behind closed doors. This episode of the Wannabe Minimalist Show will also help you discover:- How I got into minimalism in the first place- If my husband was always on board with this idea of living with less- How minimalism works for our family of three- What I really think of decluttering toys- Strategies for decluttering and creating a happy home**********************Subscribe & ReviewAre you subscribed to the Wannabe Minimalist Show podcast?
