Have you ever considered how your home either helps you or hinders you when it comes to your goals? Is it helping you be the kind of parent you want to be, or making it harder? Is it helping you have a stronger marriage, or distracting you from your partner? Clutter can affect us in ways we may not even realize. So can our routines and boundaries. In this episode, author Laura Forbes Carlin shares her insight on this ripple effect of clutter, and offers different concepts that can help us figure out how to choose what stays and what goes (like “everything is alive”). She also shares a framework for deciding when and how to include your kids in the decluttering process. In this episode of the Organized Coach Podcast, I discuss organizing your closet and creating a wardrobe with insights from guest Sarah Horgan. Sarah is a full-time working mom + wife who lived with clutter and found her way to the other side. She radically changed her own life after a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Forced to examine everything, including her perfectionism and people-pleasing, she realized all the stuff (and not just the physical stuff) was standing in her way of living her life, her way. After embracing minimalism and finding her way to simplicity, Sarah started Simple + Intentional to support other women in doing the same. She encourages and inspires others through her blog, Instagram account, and podcast. Sarah lives in Toronto with her husband and daughter. She loves the outdoors, a strong cup of tea, and is following her dream of writing a book! In this episode, Sarah shares her personal journey. She emphasizes that decluttering is not about the stuff but about understanding our buying behaviors and the psychology behind clutter. We focus on the importance of an organized wardrobe, offering practical tips for decluttering and organizing clothes to reduce decision fatigue and enhance personal style. We also delve into the relationship between our belongings and self-perception, advocating for a mindful approach to consumerism and the benefits of a minimalistic lifestyle. Sarah provides specific strategies for building a versatile, comfortable, and loved wardrobe that aligns with personal style and body image, ultimately promoting self-care and a more organized life. Some things to listen for that really impacted me: Don't start your day with negative thoughts. You can't out-organize too much stuff. Decluttering and organizing is a form of self-care. Clutter is never about the stuff. It's about our buying behaviors, our emotions, and our comfort. Our brains are wired for scarcity. We are teaching our brains to think differently. Sarah defines an organized wardrobe in three parts. You can declutter for real, or you can fake it. This will help you get started! Depending on your season, take it as far as you have the capacity to. Don't be tempted to buy things that are "okay." Invest in "amazing." From our conversation, I'm doing the following to create an easy closet I love to walk into every morning: Choosing my favorite items - analyze what I love about them. Decluttering my closet by category. (jeans, tanks, t-shirts) Managing my impulsivity. Being okay with the wait. Practicing the pause. Adding a tab to my Idea Tracker with brands I love, things I want to invest in (missing pieces of a minimalistic wardrobe), etc. The key moments in this episode are: 02:46 The Journey of Transformation: Sarah Horgan's Story 08:23 Decluttering: The First Step to an Organized Wardrobe 11:26 Creating a Personalized and Organized Wardrobe 20:33 Exploring Personal Style and Wardrobe Choices 26:26 Finding Your Style: The Journey Begins 26:53 The Time and Research Behind Personal Style 28:02 Exploring Sustainable Fashion and Investment Pieces 29:16 The Benefits of Secondhand Shopping and Customization 30:01 Patience Pays Off: Building a Wardrobe You Love 36:41 Reducing Decision Fatigue: Organizing Your Closet for Ease 38:53 Navigating Sales and Marketing Traps 43:21 Self-Care Through Wardrobe: Decluttering and Self-Love Connect with Sarah Horgan: Website Instagram Podcast Intentional Living Bundle Books Sarah mentions: Everything That Remains The Organized Mind Scarcity Brain (the scarcity loop) Project 333: The Minimalist Fashion Challenge That Proves Less Really Is So Much More Brands Sarah mentioned: Save 10% on your color profile with Color Guru with code SIMPLECOLOR Athleta Miik Eileen Fisher - the 12 shapes - The planner feature could be used to visualize getting pieces elsewhere. Hey Friend! I know how it feels to be drowning in laundry. Waking up with yesterday's dishes in the sink. Feeling like I worked all day long and by the end of the day, you couldn't tell at all.... My husband never got to see the clean floors, because there was always some big spill or mess within 30 minutes after mopping. UGH!! But once I had a plan for what needed to be done, and how to do it without neglecting my other responsibilities, and without making an even bigger mess that I wouldn't have time to clean up, I was able to GET STUFF DONE!!! When we decluttered down to one suitcase each, here are some things you need to know about that.Episode links:How to make your home your home peaceful, creative and easy to clean upFor show notes and resources mentioned in today's episode, head to https://motherhoodsimplified.com/why-i-decluttered-everything1. We did it because it was the best option for us at the time. Logistically it made the most sense. 1. It was really hard. I had no concept about how much we had, or how much fit into a suitcase. 2. No one wanted my stuff. Straight up, no one wanted it, needed it or would take it. 3. Would I do it again? Under those circumstances, absolutely. Just because? Probably not. 4. Do I think others should do it? Maybe. What I think people should really take away from it are these two things: 1. you're going to have to trash things. 2. You're going to get familiar with what and how much you really have. And it will surprise you. Mentioned in this episode:How to start & finish decluttering your home as a momhttps://motherhoodsimplified.com/pod-free-video/
