Host Malcolm Harris kicks off a spooky edition of WHAT THE TRUCK?!? live from Chattanooga, Tennessee, diving into some of the biggest stories shaping trucking and logistics. First up, OOIDA Executive Vice President Lewie Pugh joins the show to react to Secretary Duffy's fiery comments on driver qualification standards and language proficiency. Lewie breaks down the long-running myth of the “driver shortage,” calling it a cover for low pay, poor training, and unsafe working conditions. He lays out OOIDA's priorities—from codifying DOT rules into law to passing the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act—and challenges lawmakers to finally put people over profits. Next, Greg Braun, CRO and cofounder of C3 Solutions, celebrates 25 years of innovation while discussing their new C3 Hive platform. Despite a surprise fire alarm mid-interview, Greg powers through to explain how C3 Hive connects shippers, carriers, and yard operators in real time—reducing dwell time, streamlining communication, and using AI to optimize dock and yard management. Finally, Veer Junja, USC alum and cofounder of Fleetline, joins from San Francisco to share how his startup is empowering carrier planners with AI-driven optimization. Drawing from his debate background and family ties to trucking, Veer discusses how Fleetline uses algorithmic planning to boost efficiency and cut deadhead, helping carriers thrive in any market cycle. Less-Than-Truckload pricing power continues to dominate the market, drawing on insights from the latest quarterly report by AFS Logistics and TD Cowen. LTL rates are expected to remain elevated through year-end, following a third-quarter rate-per-pound index that set a record, standing 65.1% above its 2018 baseline. The episode also reviews the higher-than-average rate of transport bankruptcy filings seen in the first half of October. Filings included five companies, ranging from small carriers like G1 Transport (five power units) and Styx Logistics (an Amazon DSP) to larger entities like GEC Transport Solutions (70 power units). Hear about FleetWorks' efforts to modernize freight matchmaking using artificial intelligence, fueled by a recent $17 million funding round led by First Round Capital. CEO Paul Singer noted that AI is the solution to the long-standing inefficiency caused by lack of transparency between brokers and carriers, and the company plans to use the funds to scale engineering teams in San Francisco and Chicago. Don't miss today's lineup on FreightWaves TV, including a new episode of WHAT THE TRUCK?!? with Malcolm Harris, live at noon. This episode of What The Truck?!? dives into major transportation headlines and features two standout guests shaping the logistics landscape. The show opens with news updates from FreightWaves' John Kingston, who discusses a spike in Chapter 11 filings across the transportation sector—five in the first two weeks of October alone. Next, Malcolm explores innovation and visibility in logistics with Beth Young of Velocity, who shares insights on how her company connects technology across fleets and facilities. She discusses advances in AI, automation, camera safety systems for forklifts, and the growing importance of connectivity and sustainability. The conversation also touches on workforce development, the future of distribution efficiency, and even a fun detour about mozzarella-making and Spanish cuisine. The final guest, Trent Tello, CEO and founder of Forever Freight Broker, brings high energy and passion for reforming broker–trucker relationships. He tells his personal story of entering the industry after his father lost a trucking business to bad brokers and explains how he's teaching drivers to “cut out the middleman” by learning brokerage skills themselves. His goal: empower truckers through education, transparency, and long-term thinking. This week on The Transfix Take, Jenni Ruiz and market expert Justin Maze break down the latest trends as Q4 2025 kicks off. Rates are holding steady, but regional shifts and a few policy curveballs are keeping things interesting. Here's what's moving the market: • A return to seasonal norms after weeks of volatility • Flatbed load-to-truck ratios up 8.4%, signaling tightening in project and construction freight • A nor'easter and West Coast storms bringing rain, wind, and early snow to key markets • West Coast lanes heating up while the Southeast and Coastal regions cool off • A continued slow decline in the South, while the Midwest holds steady • The ongoing impact of non-domicile CDL regulations — and why Maze says the real effects are still months away Plus, Jenni gives a shoutout to Freightwaves' new WHAT THE TRUCK?!? host, Malcolm Harris, and recaps Carly Gunby's appearance on the show to talk RFP strategies and how to beat AI fatigue in freight. Malcolm Harris is joined by two industry leaders for a jam-packed show. This episode is brought to you by Descartes MacroPoint, the industry's best transportation visibility and risk monitoring platform. First, Malcolm speaks with Michael Hain, Director of Product Marketing at Descartes. They dive deep into the latest Descartes Transportation Management Benchmark Study. Hain reveals that a surprising 81% of respondents now see transportation as a competitive weapon and a key customer service differentiator. They discuss the gap between high AI adoption and low full-process automation (only 17%) , and how companies can leverage their existing tech stack to its fullest potential. Hain also explains how Descartes' solutions like MyCarrierPortal and MacroPoint FraudGuard help companies combat the rising risk of cargo theft. Later, Tyler “T-Mont” Montgomery, Chief Commercial Officer at Scout Freight, joins the show. Montgomery shares his excitement for his new role and the vision for Scout Freight to be an agile, core truckload provider that doesn't lose its entrepreneurial spirit. U.S. businesses are increasingly claiming USMCA exemptions as rising tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other goods push import costs higher. This has led to a sharp increase in USMCA compliance for goods from Canada, reaching 81% in June, and from Mexico, now at 77%. Massachusetts state troopers sentenced after involvement in a CDL fraud scheme. Calvin Butner received three months in jail and Perry Mendes one month, both for falsifying CDL test scores and giving passing grades to unqualified applicants. Three other individuals involved in the scheme are still awaiting their sentencing. Canada Post has also made headlines, reporting its largest-ever pre-tax loss of US$294 million in the second quarter due to a significant drop in parcel volumes. This decline, which has been steady since December, resulted from a prolonged contract dispute with mail carriers that pushed shippers to private carriers. Overall revenue for Canada Post was down 7.3%, with a 36.7% decrease in parcel revenue. Trump's administration has placed an immediate pause on new commercial truck driver work visas. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cited concerns that the increasing number of foreign drivers endangers American lives and undercuts American truckers' livelihoods, a decision that followed a fatal semi-truck crash in Florida and is supported by the ATA. A framework agreement was announced on Thursday to boost transatlantic economic ties and resolve trade imbalances. Under this deal, the EU will eliminate tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and grant preferential market access for various American agricultural products, while the U.S. commits to applying a maximum 15% tariff rate on most EU goods. Furthermore, FedEx is turning its attention to Europe, sending specialists from its U.S. ground, parcel, and freight units to streamline operations and improve efficiency, particularly in route planning and package efficiency. This initiative is a major part of FedEx's plan to cut an additional $1 billion in structural costs this fiscal year, building on the $4 billion already eliminated in the past two years.
