His commitment to preserving and developing Caribbean culture led him to establish Bent Street Films LLC, a production company dedicated to bringing Guyanese and Caribbean stories to global audiences. With a robust academic background in Communication and Fine Arts from the University of Guyana and Ohio University, where he earned his Master's in Fine Arts - Film, Yaphet brings both scholarly rigor and practical expertise to his work. As Visual Content Manager at Hocking College and former roles such as Adjunct Professor and Graduate Assistant, Yaphet has not only shaped young minds but also enriched his own perspective as a filmmaker. His tenure at institutions like the Columbus College of Art & Design and the Athens International Film and Video Festival has deepened his understanding of storytelling dynamics and technical prowess.

The Chumps explore the "Casablanca of buddy comedies," from the De Niro/Grodin chemistry, to the subtle gags, to the brilliance of the Litmus Configuration scene. This week on the podcast we discuss how the generational gap has affected us as first generation Americans and what we have learned from our experiences so far. We each share our personal examples of our upbringing and how we have overcome various barriers to establish the relationships we have with our parents today. We hope this brings some form of clarity to those who are in a similar boat. We know first hand how much of an impact this can have on our overall well being, but we hope this helps push others in the right direction. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/growthovercomfort/support

A small handful of moments tie past, present, future in one. Leaving your work is such a matter. And when Art is your work, the conversation contaminates, beautifully. Groundbreaking actor Yaphet Kotto is not a reminisce'er by nature, but is he a retiree? And in a profession where one is arguably never hired to begin with, who is retiring from Art even up to? Perhaps, as Yaphet's work lives-on as dynamically than ever, retiring is one of those pesky mortal dilemmas. Our specialty, alas.

The year is 2019. America is in crisis. The media is used to manipulate citizens to the government's will. A rabid, blood-thirsty nation turns to the screen to get its daily dose of pain and suffering. But that has nothing to do with THE RUNNING MAN, the 1987 sci-fi- action flick starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a man who stands up against tyranny and is forced to play a deadly game for survival. We loved this movie when we were kids, but how does it hold up in today's dark dystopian present? Movie Meltdown - Episode 322 This week we sit down and talk with the one and only...Yaphet Kotto. He has a fascinating place in history and a interesting role in the heyday of the New York acting scene, celebrity culture and the ever-changing Hollywood industry. Not to mention the overwhelming number of projects he's worked on over the years - it's quite a resume. So with all that to draw from, we attempt to get at least a brief synopsis of... The Strange and Amazing Life of Yaphet Kotto. And as we address the fine art of being "a strange guy", we also discuss... being a horseman, royal family ties, messing with the history, a ghost would appear, Homicide, a series of events... in a church basement, Ossie Davis, I don't have an agent, Kananga, Martin Breast, I read that I'm doing a television show, Panamanian, Harry Dean Stanton, he went to the rabbi, impersonating Marlon Brando, copying these older guys, the belly of the beast, James Earl Jones, having chemistry, Barry Levinson comes driving up, the strength of women, I'm gonna call the cops, Ridley Scott, there are big people who have their eyes on you, NAACP, getting jobs without having to audition, around New York I started getting this name, The Stage Deli, having me removed from the building, James Dean, I didn't know you knew Paul Newman, white royalty, A Raisin in the Sun, Montgomery Clift, I was mysterious for sure, The Liberation of L.B. Jones, Anthony Quinn, beam me up Scotty, even when his back was turned, James Bond, Marilyn Monroe, technological innovations, On the Waterfront, Christopher Plummer, The Actors Studio, being a rebel, the first time a white man is killed on-screen, The Dick Cavett Show, Lee Strasberg, Rebel without a Cause and the artist... is going to say something about it. "And no one knew... in my neighborhood or anywhere... that during the night, I was with superstars from Hollywood!"
In this new episode of Over/Under Movies, where we pick apart one overrated and one underrated film, we dive into the criminal underbelly of 70s Harlem. And who better to do that than three film critics from the Pacific Northwest? First off, we talk about 1972's Across 110th Street, which grittily depicts the investigation of a robbery during a 24-hour period. Is it a simple Blaxploitation film the way its reputation suggests, or is there something deep underneath? Then, we find ourselves in an existential conversation about where Ridley Scott's unique talent has gone after 2000s Gladiator, as his forced crime epic American Gangster proves to be an uneven and bland experience. How forgettable is it? One of our critics watched it three times, and he still can't care to remember what happens in it. As usual, thank you for listening, please send us your comments so we can improve the show and look forward to new episodes when our kick ass Portland-based film critics will discuss one overrated and one underrated film within the same genre or style. You can also find us on iTunes if you search for Over/Under Movies and on Twitter @overundermovies. Erik McClanahan is the lead film critic at Oregon Arts Watch, co-host of the Adjust Your Tracking podcast (Also available on iTunes) and a contributor at The Playlist. Ryan Oliver is an awesome film critic who used to write for Gotcha Movies but is taking a break in order to pursue something called a "viable career". Regardless, we love hearing him talk so he'll always be a part of the gang. Oktay Ege Kozak is a film critic for The Oregon Herald, Beyazperde, DVD Talk and is also a contributor and film critic at The Playlist. A special thank you to Drew Wallner, who designed our new logo.
Comedian Dustin Meadows hosts a weekly show wherein he watches his favorite movies with other comedians who've never seen the film before. Dustin introduces Joe Horan and Kyle Tolliver to Schwarzenegger's contribution in the long-running "Most Dangerous Game" variations genre. They discuss the least inspired puns of the Governator's career as well as a dystopian world that doesn't really go to the trouble of developing itself very much. The boys talk about wrestling way too much. *Artwork by Brandon Schneider
