A little levity and "Jealousy", the addition of some guitar, when our artistic heroes become sleazeballs, the worst basketball team ever, the best high school class ever, some great songs from Grease, Kristy McNichol, and Yaphet fucking Kotto. Stuff mentioned: Billy Joel "Jealousy" (1978), Badfinger "No Matter What" (1970), Play it Again, Sam (1972), The Bad News Bears (1976), Built to Spill "Twin Falls" (1994), Built to Spill Perfect from Now On (1997), Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Rambo: First Blood Part 2 II (1985), Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Grease (1978), Bye Bye Birdie "We Love You Conrad" (1963), Grease "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" (1978), Grease "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee"/Reprise (1978), Xanadu (1980), Olivia Newton-John "Magic" (1980), The Pirate Movie (1982), The Blue Lagoon (1980), Dream Lover (1986), The Pirate Movie "Happy Ending" (1982), Heart of Dixie (1989), Midnight Run (1988), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Gigli (2003), The Star Chamber (1983), Blue Collar (1978), and Jigsaw "Sky High" (1975).
2023 was the year of the strike, so what better way to bid it adieu than with one of the definitive labor flicks: Paul Schrader's Blue Collar. This time the pick belongs to the first-ever DIBYMTT guest, Allan McLeod, and before the guys even get the chance to talk Schrader, Duncan comes clean with a big confession. It paves the way for deep discussion about betrayal, compromise, on-set rivalries, and silly disguises. Zip up your overalls, strap on your safety glasses, and prepare for controversial takes on Harvey Keitel's weirdness, Richard Pryor's temper, and the pronunciation of "Kotto". If you haven't seen this classic, do yourself a favor and queue up a dramedy-heist unlike any other. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week's episode pays tribute to the late actor Yaphet Kotto with a look at his breakout role in 1972's "Across 110th Street." Eric and Charlie examine the gritty crime drama and talk about Kotto's celebrated career and onscreen power. Listen now!
In this episode, we look back on the amazing career of Yaphet Kotto. We talk about an unsung highlight of his filmography and a leading role from Kotto in Larry Cohen's Bone, a film that twists as much as it turns. Then we look at a perennial favorite from his filmography, the iconic and all-time classic sci-fi horror film from Ridley Scott, Alien. We also talk about the biggest thing in film this week, Zack Snyder's Justice League. Oh yeah, and we drink some beer.
Luke, Matt, Mike and Scott are back on the scene. The passing of Yaphet Kotto stirs strong feelings in Luke who gives a thoughtful farewell to the perpetually under appreciated Kotto. March Madness is back and both MSU and Michigan are in this year. We have plenty of chances to blow money now that sports betting is legal in Michigan. Scott got the vaccine and he is still alive. He tells you how to get it yourself if you live in Detroit. Mike has made tremendous progress from the germaphobe he once was in his younger days. Find out if Shoegaze is the best choice for your make-out playlist. Matt explains why book clubs can be a chore. Cormac McCarthy sat down with Oprah once for an interview. More literally he settled into a slouch with Oprah. Give us your feedback by emailing us random trash at isitsafepod@gmail.com

Okay, so streaming services like HBO Max and Netflix aren't quite the video store of old. Browsing through titles is tough, exclusivity makes thing worse, and they're constantly throwing their new movies at you in favor of catalog items. But, that doesn't mean there isn't good stuff to be found... if you look for it.
Nyhetssändning från kulturredaktionen P1, med reportage, nyheter och recensioner.
In this first episode, Wes and Ty dig deep into their mutual love of 1979's ALIEN by Ridley Scott and how foundational it was on the creation of The Expanse.
The number of F-bombs in this film is astonishing. So is the number of cigarettes smoked by De Niro! The Chumps explore the "Casablanca of buddy comedies," from the De Niro/Grodin chemistry, to the subtle gags, to the brilliance of the Litmus Configuration scene. Also: our homage to the late Chadwick Boseman.

The year is 2019. America is in crisis. The media is used to manipulate citizens to the government's will. A rabid, blood-thirsty nation turns to the screen to get its daily dose of pain and suffering. But that has nothing to do with THE RUNNING MAN, the 1987 sci-fi- action flick starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a man who stands up against tyranny and is forced to play a deadly game for survival. We loved this movie when we were kids, but how does it hold up in today's dark dystopian present? Movie Meltdown - Episode 322 This week we sit down and talk with the one and only...Yaphet Kotto. He has a fascinating place in history and a interesting role in the heyday of the New York acting scene, celebrity culture and the ever-changing Hollywood industry. Not to mention the overwhelming number of projects he's worked on over the years - it's quite a resume. So with all that to draw from, we attempt to get at least a brief synopsis of... The Strange and Amazing Life of Yaphet Kotto. And as we address the fine art of being "a strange guy", we also discuss... being a horseman, royal family ties, messing with the history, a ghost would appear, Homicide, a series of events... in a church basement, Ossie Davis, I don't have an agent, Kananga, Martin Breast, I read that I'm doing a television show, Panamanian, Harry Dean Stanton, he went to the rabbi, impersonating Marlon Brando, copying these older guys, the belly of the beast, James Earl Jones, having chemistry, Barry Levinson comes driving up, the strength of women, I'm gonna call the cops, Ridley Scott, there are big people who have their eyes on you, NAACP, getting jobs without having to audition, around New York I started getting this name, The Stage Deli, having me removed from the building, James Dean, I didn't know you knew Paul Newman, white royalty, A Raisin in the Sun, Montgomery Clift, I was mysterious for sure, The Liberation of L.B. Jones, Anthony Quinn, beam me up Scotty, even when his back was turned, James Bond, Marilyn Monroe, technological innovations, On the Waterfront, Christopher Plummer, The Actors Studio, being a rebel, the first time a white man is killed on-screen, The Dick Cavett Show, Lee Strasberg, Rebel without a Cause and the artist... is going to say something about it. "And no one knew... in my neighborhood or anywhere... that during the night, I was with superstars from Hollywood!"
In this new episode of Over/Under Movies, where we pick apart one overrated and one underrated film, we dive into the criminal underbelly of 70s Harlem. And who better to do that than three film critics from the Pacific Northwest? First off, we talk about 1972's Across 110th Street, which grittily depicts the investigation of a robbery during a 24-hour period. Is it a simple Blaxploitation film the way its reputation suggests, or is there something deep underneath? Then, we find ourselves in an existential conversation about where Ridley Scott's unique talent has gone after 2000s Gladiator, as his forced crime epic American Gangster proves to be an uneven and bland experience. How forgettable is it? One of our critics watched it three times, and he still can't care to remember what happens in it. As usual, thank you for listening, please send us your comments so we can improve the show and look forward to new episodes when our kick ass Portland-based film critics will discuss one overrated and one underrated film within the same genre or style. You can also find us on iTunes if you search for Over/Under Movies and on Twitter @overundermovies. Erik McClanahan is the lead film critic at Oregon Arts Watch, co-host of the Adjust Your Tracking podcast (Also available on iTunes) and a contributor at The Playlist. Ryan Oliver is an awesome film critic who used to write for Gotcha Movies but is taking a break in order to pursue something called a "viable career". Regardless, we love hearing him talk so he'll always be a part of the gang. Oktay Ege Kozak is a film critic for The Oregon Herald, Beyazperde, DVD Talk and is also a contributor and film critic at The Playlist. A special thank you to Drew Wallner, who designed our new logo.
Brian & Cargill continue their celebration of their favorite black character actors. This time around, they truck across 110th street to sing the praises of the great Yaphet Kotto!
Comedian Dustin Meadows hosts a weekly show wherein he watches his favorite movies with other comedians who've never seen the film before. Dustin introduces Joe Horan and Kyle Tolliver to Schwarzenegger's contribution in the long-running "Most Dangerous Game" variations genre. They discuss the least inspired puns of the Governator's career as well as a dystopian world that doesn't really go to the trouble of developing itself very much. The boys talk about wrestling way too much. *Artwork by Brandon Schneider

Bond is back in number eight, and Moore is playing him for the first time. Everything is different, except that the cars are American again, the dames are American again, and the action is kind of lame again. But—hey—the bad guys are black this time! I mock Felix Leiter and Whisper and condemn Rosie Carver and writer Tom Mankiewicz. I analyze Mr. Big's ruthlessly over-efficient gang machine. I mock Paul McCartney's grammar (but fail to mention how Bond dissed the Beatles in Goldfinger). I compare the film to the earlier entries, to the book, to blaxploitation movies, and to Smokey and the Bandit. I praise Seymour, Kotto, and Moore, but mostly I complain that this just isn't one of the better entries. I take a break from obsessively identifying cars to obsessively differentiating between crocodiles and alligators.
