OH MERCY – BOB DYLAN with special guest Michael Gray. In 1989 Bob Dylan appeared to be a busted flush, the God bothering had faded and the glory decades were long gone but with Daniel Lanois at the helm ‘Oh Mercy' smashed any preconceptions of creative malaise and delivered his most vital work for years. For many ‘Oh Mercy' was a gateway drug to both Dylan and the genre of Americana. It is a genuine classic album that stands up to repeated listens.” (Rolling Stone). MICHAEL GRAY was the man who in 1972 wrote the first critical study of Bob Dylan's work – the first to take him seriously as an artist and to discuss his work alongside that of the literary majors – all this more than 40 years before Dylan received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Michael has remained at the forefront of Dylan Studies and his books are widely used in colleges and libraries on both sides of the Atlantic. We were delighted to welcome the author of ‘Song & Dance Man,' ‘The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia' and ‘Outtakes On Bob Dylan' for what proved to be a memorable evening – Dr. Michael Gray. This event took place on 26th September 2024 in the Pigeon Loft at The Robin Hood, Pontefract, West Yorkshire. To find out more about the CAT Club please visit: www.thecatclub.co.uk Happy Trails.
Chapter 1:Summary of Chronicles"Chronicles: Volume One" is an autobiographical book by Bob Dylan, the iconic American singer-songwriter and Nobel laureate. Published in 2004, it is the first installment of a planned three-volume memoir. The book delves into Dylan's life through a selective and non-linear narrative rather than a traditional, chronological memoir. In "Chronicles: Volume One," Dylan discusses various stages of his career, starting with his arrival in New York City in 1961, where he rapidly emerged as a prominent figure in the folk music scene. The book provides a vivid portrayal of the city's cultural atmosphere during this period, emphasizing the artists, musicians, and writers who influenced the young Dylan. Rather than focusing on his most successful and well-known phases exclusively, Dylan also explores less-discussed periods of his music career, such as the early 1990s, when he recorded albums like "Oh Mercy" and "Time Out of Mind", explaining his creative decisions and the evolution of his music during these times.Dylan's prose reveals his profound attachment to music, literature, and the American cultural landscape, referencing various artistic influences that shaped his songwriting and worldview. The book is notable for its lyrical quality, reflecting his talent as one of the greatest songwriters of his time.Contributing a personal and introspective perspective on Bob Dylan's life and career, "Chronicles: Volume One" is a valuable text for understanding the man behind the music, providing insights into his thoughts, motivations, and artistic journey in his own words. The work has garnered praise for its poetic approach and unique take on the memoir genre, blending historical narration with deeply personal anecdotes.Chapter 2:The Theme of Chronicles"Chronicles: Volume One" by Bob Dylan, published in 2004, is a memoir that explores key events and periods in the iconic musician's life. Although the book does not follow a strict chronological order, it provides profound insights into Dylan's personal experiences and the development of his artistry. Below we'll discuss some key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas from the book: Key Plot Points1. Arrival in New York City (1961): The book opens with Dylan's arrival in New York in 1961, highlighting his initial struggles and his eagerness to make a mark in the music scene. This early chapter sets the stage for his future successes and struggles.2. Recording of "Oh Mercy" (1989): Dylan details the recording process of the 1989 album "Oh Mercy," particularly focusing on his collaboration with producer Daniel Lanois. This is significant as it represents a period of artistic resurgence for Dylan after a series of less critically acclaimed works in the 1980s.3. Exploration of Musical Influences: Throughout the memoir, Dylan reflects on the artists and experiences that shaped his music, including his time spent learning from folk artist Woody Guthrie and his exposure to various musical styles.4. Personal Struggles and Reflections: Dylan discusses various personal challenges, including his discomfort with his fame and the public's expectations of him. His philosophical musings and self-reflection are key elements that run through the narrative. Character Development- Self-Awareness: As a character in his own memoir, Dylan exhibits a growing self-awareness and maturity. This development is most apparent as he looks back at his younger self with a mixture of affection and critical insight.- Artistic Integrity: Dylan's commitment to his artistic vision, despite external pressures and expectations, is a central part of his character. His integrity in his musical and personal life is tested and ultimately reinforced through the experiences he shares.- Resilience: The memoir highlights Dylan's...

Join Timothy Carroll and Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy as they sit down with Matty O on Triple M Homegrown to commemorate a decade of incredible music and memories. From their chance encounter as English teachers in Thailand to their rise to worldwide success, this episode takes you on an unforgettable journey through the band's remarkable history. The conversation begins with the boys reminiscing about their time in Thailand, where they initially crossed paths but struggled to master the local language. Fast forward to the present day, and their journey has led them to heights they could have never imagined during those early days. Back in Australia, Tim shares a heartwarming memory of witnessing Oscar's previous band, 'Dukes of Windsor,' achieve their own success. Little did they know that their paths would converge again in Sweden, where Oscar found himself crashing on Tim's couch while working on a 'Dukes of Windsor' record in Berlin, Germany. With minimal production experience and basic equipment, Tim approached Oscar with some musical ideas. Being the production wiz he is, Oscar jumped in to help bring those ideas to life. The duo's chemistry was undeniable, and though they never intended to form a band, the magic they created together was undeniable. Their first song 'Impossible Like You,' released in 2013, exceeded all expectations, receiving national radio airplay and opening doors to countless gigs. This unforeseen success set them on a course that would change their lives forever. Tim and Oscar also share touching moments they've experienced with fans, from encountering devoted admirers with tattoos of their lyrics to fans claiming they gave birth to a non-stop playlist of Holy Holy music. Matty takes the duo on a nostalgic trip down Memory Lane, reliving some of their biggest shows to date. The recounting of their first major gig at the Palais Theatre brings laughter as they recall committing a rookie mistake of forgetting their equipment – a tale that has become part of their band's folklore. Going behind the scenes at Splendour in the Grass, Tim and Oscar recall their exhilarating experience performing at the festival, from braving the mud to camping on site and even playfully sharing a stolen bottle of Jamison from Oh Mercy. In a surprising twist, they share an amusing story of being mistaken for a David Bowie cover band due to their band name "Holy Holy." The episode concludes with delightful anecdotes of their encounters with music sensations Billie Eilish and Coolio at Groovin The Moo, solidifying their position in the music world as artists who have had the honor of sharing moments with music icons.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As a teenager, he played in various bands and with time his interest in music deepened, with a particular passion for American folk music and blues. One of his idols was the folk singer Woody Guthrie. He was also influenced by the early authors of the Beat Generation, as well as by modernist poets. Dylan moved to New York City in 1961 and began to perform in clubs and cafés in Greenwich Village. He met the record producer John Hammond, with whom he signed a contract for his debut album, Bob Dylan (1962). In the following years, he recorded a number of albums which have had a tremendous impact on popular music: Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited in 1965, Blonde On Blonde in 1966 and Blood On The Tracks in 1975. His productivity continued in the following decades, resulting in masterpieces like Oh Mercy (1989), Time Out of Mind (1997) and Modern Times (2006).Dylan's tours in 1965 and 1966 attracted a lot of attention. For a period, he was accompanied by film maker D. A. Pennebaker, who documented life around the stage in what would come to be the movie Dont Look Back (1967). Dylan has recorded a large number of albums revolving around topics such as: the social conditions of man, religion, politics and love. The lyrics have continuously been published in new editions starting in 1973, under the title WritingsandDrawings, subsequently changed to Lyrics. As an artist, he is strikingly versatile; he has been active as a painter, actor and scriptwriter. Besides his large production of albums, Dylan has published experimental work like the prose poetry collection Tarantula (1971). He has written an autobiography, Chronicles (2004), which depicts memories from the early years in New York and which provides glimpses of his life at the center of popular culture. Since the late 1980s, Bob Dylan has toured consistently, playing over 3000 concerts during the last 20 years. Dylan has the status of an icon. His influence on contemporary culture is profound, and he is the object of a steady stream of literary and musical analysis. From https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2016/dylan/biographical/. Mark Howard is an accomplished Engineer, Producer and Musician - who worked with Bob Dylan as the Engineer on two of his most loved albums: Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind. In this conversation Mark tells us about the everything from the very beginning when Dylan drove himself up to the Teatro Studio for a different project, to 3am phone calls when Mark encouraged Bob to come finish the songs they'd recorded and then put out Time Out Of Mind. In between we hear some great stories from inside the recording studio. A Premium Edition of this episode, about twice as long, is available to Premium Members at FreakMusic.Club. Black and White: Radical Grace, Raw Truth and Real Hope in a Gray World
Mercy is such a blessing to receive, but so costly to the giver. Mercy is not meant to be taken for granted. The gift of God's mercy is so we can draw near, not be separated again because of sin. Bible Reading: Exodus 33-36 Verse of the day: Exodus 33:19, "The LORD replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose." Word of the day: Mercy. It is the Hebrew word: רָחַם (raw-kham').

For this episode, we're going to take a little break from the series on Rough And Rowdy Ways!I want to take you on a journey towards the heart of one of my favourite Bob Dylan songs of all time: “Most Of The Time” from Dylan's 1989 album Oh Mercy. Deceptively simple, this song about pain and denial is wonderfully subtle in its development of the singer's feelings, while also playing with the listener's expectations. In other words: it's a masterclass in songwriting. So let's find out why and how it works!I hope you enjoy this closer look at one particular Dylan song. Let me know if you enjoy this episode and what other songs you'd like me to take a close look at!Here's the link to the Daniel Lanois interview compilation I mention in the episode. If you are in a position to support my work, you can do that over on Patreon, where you also find the exclusive companion extra to this episode, in which we talk about the recording process of the song, the production, and its shortlived incarnation onstage! Thank you!Original theme music and sound design for this episode by Robert Chaney
