Nancy grew up in Savannah, Georgia, and like most people, was active in the church. But after having kids, she moved into the Jewish neighborhood of Savannah, wanting what she saw there for her family. That started her down a path of questioning and curiosity that ultimately led her to convert. We talk about her journey, what she studied to become a certified Jew, and how her before-and-after lives compare. This episode kicks off an informal mini-series exploring conversion to Judaism. We'll hear a few personal stories, and a rabbinical perspective. This could be an endless series, because of course, every experience is unique. As many converts as there are in the world, that's how many reasons and paths there are to conversion.  Synagogue: the Jewish house of worship and learning. Also called a "shul" or temple.JEA: The Jewish Educational Alliance, is Savannah's version of a JCC (Jewish Community Center). JCCs originated in Baltimore in 1854 and are community and event centers, often with gyms and child care, open to membership from anyone. Proselytize: to recruit or attempt to convert someone to a faith. Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights, recognizable to many by the 9-branched menorah, takes place anywhere from October to December, on the 25 of the Jewish month of Kislev (Judaism uses a lunar calendar). Not actually a religious holiday, it commemorates the victory of the Maccabee (meaning: hammer) tribe over the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes.Zaydie: Yiddish for grandpa, also spelled “zaydeh” or “zaydee.”Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: known as the High Holy Days, they are separated by ten days, collectively known as The Days of Awe. Rosh Hashanah means “head of the year,” but is not the calendar new year; it's the anniversary of Creation. Tradition says that on Rosh Hashanah the Book of Life is opened, and on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) it is sealed. Brooke Chiro is an actress, model, and content creator, based in Nashville, Tennessee. Ever since she was young, she knew she wanted to be involved with the entertainment industry in some capacity. Chiro loved getting opportunities to act and be front and center in photographs. When moving too Nashville. Chiro found a job in retail working at Kittenish, a store owned by country singer, Jessie James Decker. As her experience at the store continued she got promoted to being a content creator. Now, full time, Chiro works as Kittenish's content creator and develops new ideas to make the business the best it can be. Jessie James Decker Dishes on New Music and Her First Cookbook! Jessie James Decker has been busy balancing her thriving career and home life while under quarantine, and tells our Gentry Thomas that her Mother recently told her she should slow down. When we spoke this week with the 32-year-old, she talked all about how quarantine has been going for her family of five, as well as her new music and her highly anticipated first cookbook, Just Feed Me. Jessie shares down-home and simple-to-make recipes for drinks, appetizers, and full dinners--many Italian, Southern and Cajun dishes which were handed down to her from her mom.  Jessie and her husband, Eric Decker, share three young children together -- 6-year-old daughter Vivianne and their two sons, 5-year-old Eric II and 2-year-old Forrest. Today on the show, I am chatting with another old college buddy of mine, Mr. Todd Evans.  He is the Director of Professional Development with ProLiteracy based out of Syracuse NY. Todd and I talk about our college days at Memphis State and how they prepared us for who we are today, his desire to educate the voting population, and how we as a community, can help adults learn to read. And for me, Adult Literacy is a very personal topic. There is an estimated 36 million adults in the U.S.—and almost 800 million worldwide—struggle with basic reading, writing and math skills. These individuals struggle daily to read a menu, fill out a job application, or even read a bedtime story to their children. ProLiteracy removes the hurdles that stand in the way of their goals. We talk 30 years in the military, ICBM missiles, Strategic Air Command and the cold war.  Colonel Vaughn retired from the United States Air Force in 2010 concluding a 30 year career in the military.  He started off as an ICBM launch officer in South Dakota and concluded his long career as Chief of Nuclear Operations at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue Nebraska. Today on the show I am catching up with former University of Memphis Tiger basketball Hall of Famer, Antonio Anderson.   We talk about growing up in Lynn Massachusetts, the thrill of basketball, coaching in his hometown and his love affair with the city of Memphis. And yes, we even chat about THAT game.  You know the one… on April 7, 2008. During his playing career at Memphis, he helped lead the Tigers to a combined four-year record of 137 wins to 14 losses.  Anderson, along with 2 other Memphis seniors, Robert Dozier and Chance McGrady, finished his career at Memphis with the most wins as a player in NCAA men's basketball history. A 6ft 6 guard who took incredible pride in his defense, he graduated from the University of Memphis in 2009.  And today coaches a state-winning high school basketball in his hometown of Lynn, Massachusetts. Beka Contreras (a southern girl born and raised in a small town in North Carolina) met her husband while serving in the military. They have been married just over 4 years and are currently on adventure raising their two kiddos in England where her husband is stationed.  And although she's no longer serving in the military she is still doing things she loves like - thrifting, educating about essential oils, pursuing photography, and dreaming about someday working for NASA.  She has a deep desire to bring together wives, mothers, daughters, girlfriends or anyone who has a pursuit of community to find a place of belonging.
