However, there are several strategies you can employ to combat FOMO and stay committed to your NoFap journey. Here are some suggestions:     Set clear goals: Establish clear goals and reasons for undertaking NoFap. Remind yourself of the benefits you hope to achieve, such as improved self-control, increased self-confidence, better relationships, and personal growth. Having a strong sense of purpose can help you stay focused and resist the temptation to give in to FOMO.     Educate yourself: Learn about the harmful effects of excessive pornography consumption and the benefits of abstaining from it. Understand the science behind addiction and the positive changes that occur in your brain and body when you engage in NoFap. This knowledge can reinforce your commitment and make it easier to combat FOMO.     Create a support system: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who are also practicing NoFap or have similar goals. I will show you Liberty Village, CN Tower, Fort York, Exhibition Place, Lake Ontario, and Union Station. There are three levels of dealing with porn addiction. The first level is escaping your feelings with porn. I used to be unhappy and I wanted to escape it with porn right there and then. I had a symptom and I was using a Band-Aid for it. It worked for my symptom. But it was a coping mechanism for escaping the symptom = the feeling. Porn is that Band-Aid that lets you escape the feeling that you have. But it's only that. It only covers up the symptom in the short term. But it doesn't do anything to improve the situation. The second level is improved addiction. It's "medication." That "medication" is replacing porn with a healthier addiction such as an intimate relationship. It's better but not sustainable. Made me feel amazing a lot of the time. But deep inside, I was still unhappy. What if your partner breaks up with you? That's what my ex-wife did. Band-Aids and medications don't work. What is the ultimate solution ❔ The third level is getting free from ALL addictions. You've got to strike at the root cause of unhappiness rather than the symptom.  The root cause is your inability to enjoy life when you're doing… nothing. Stop maximizing pleasure. Like just being. Teach yourself to disconnect from the thinking mind and connect to being. The mind wants to feel comfortable. When you indulge in addictions, you feel comfortable but it means you are satisfying your lower self (monkey mind). No fulfillment there. Embrace pain as something you grow from. Read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Stop seeking stimulations. Enjoy meditation. Appreciate every little experience. Otherwise, porn creates that meaning for you. Stop distractions. Create a schedule. Create a Life that you will enjoy. Pornography is a type of media that can take many different forms, such as videos, images, magazines, or websites, and it typically depicts sexual acts or nudity in a way that is intended to be erotic or sexually stimulating. I will look at pornography from my super-biased perspective of an anti-porn guy.  The first purpose is to make you dumb and controllable. Your brain is lazy.  It wants pleasure. Pleasure can come from dopamine or serotonin. Dopamine comes from instant rewards that come easily. Serotonin comes from hard work. Getting real sex with a great partner is hard work. Your brain doesn't want to go for the hard work of sex to get serotonin. It's so much easier to go for the dopamine of porn and masturbation. Porn is just too accessible. The hardest part is that it's too easy to access on your phone—one click and you're already on it. After you get addicted to porn, the porn industry now controls you. The second purpose is to ensure the survival of the porn industry. It must grow profits by perpetuating itself and attracting new consumers and new talent, regardless of the damage it makes. The third purpose is to cross-seel associated things to you. Examples include Only Fans, sex toys, and VR goggles. Now, let's look at the “healthier” purposes of porn. It can be a form of sexual release. People feel the sexual tension and do PMO as a controlled release. The problem is that it's too easy to get addicted very quickly. Porn can add spice to your sexual life. Let's say, a couple wants to re-ignite the spark in their relationship. But they might not realize that porn comes with a risk of shattering the stability of the relationship. Some people are so depressed that PMO is one of the few ways for them to cope. The problem is that it will stop working eventually. Excessive consumption of pornography can also have negative consequences, such as addiction, desensitization to sexual content, and distorted views of sex and sexuality. I also recommend using my “15 Minutes of Sacrifice” technique: Imagine yourself feeling unhappy or bored or lonely. And you want to escape this feeling using fapping. But how long does it last? On average, 15 minutes.  What happens after that? You feel even worse than when you started. And you have that bad feeling on average for 2 hours. So that's 15 minutes of pleasure vs. 2 hours of pain. That said, let's look at an alternative scenario. Again, you feel unhappy or bored and want to escape.     But this time, you spend the same 15 minutes not doing PMO. You choose to be strong. I know that is difficult… and painful. But afterward, you get 2 hours of pleasure because you feel good about making the right choice. That's 15 minutes of pain vs. 2 hours of pleasure. When you compare these two options, the choice is obvious. It does work for a short moment but ultimately, it is an unsustainable strategy. The key is to deal with anxiety directly—as the root cause of PMO addiction.  And I totally understand if you are feeling anxious. People are simply unprepared physically and psychologically for the amount of pressure the modern world puts on them. I am not a naturally anxious person. But I had periods in my life when I had it. One time was after my son Denis was born. My cousin's kid had died a year before, right before his birthday. I was scared that something like that could happen to my own son. I've been struggling with overthinking recently. I feel it is also related to anxiety.  I might think of all the different details of any task at hand. Even something as simple as riding a bike to a grocery store. That said, let me share a few ways I've used to relieve anxiety. Focusing on just one thing Just like many people, I like focusing on one thing. When I am laser-focused, I forget about any problems that I might have in the future. I feel calmer. To achieve that focus, I set goals and make plans for achieving them. Then I take that planning down to a day level. I schedule my day in 30-minute segments. I know exactly what I will be doing and that helps with focus. I also make sure to minimize distractions. If I have a distracting thought, I write it down. It's like I'm downloading this thought off my mind. My mind stops worrying about it as a result because now it knows that I will get back to that thought later. I also eliminate distractions from the phone. I turn off notifications and look at the phone as little as possible.  Letting go of control Anxiety is about trying to control everything including perceptions of yourself in others. I do my best to let go of that control. My goal is to be like a speaker in a club. It just plays music and doesn't care about how anyone reacts to it. Create an explanation for your fear (I learned this from Daniel Gilbert). Our mind lets go when it has an explanation of the things it wants to worry about. And I'd make a promise to myself to quit it for good.      But then I'd relapse anyway. This cycle kept on repeating for years.     I didn't understand why I kept relapsing back then. But after I read George Lenard's book Mastery: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment, my eyes opened.     What is homeostasis ❔     It turns out that there is a system in our mind that prevents us from changing. It's called homeostasis.     Homeostasis is an equilibrium state that our mind automatically returns to because this state ensured our survival in the past. It's like our comfort zone.     A decade ago, I had mild depression and survived it by developing an addiction to social media and porn. I taught my brain that this is my homeostasis.     After I recovered from depression, I wanted to get rid of my addictions. But every time, I kept relapsing because my brain felt uncomfortable about these changes and returned me to homeostasis—the old me riddled with bad habits.     Look, homeostasis is an amazing system that protects us from stress. Among other things, it maintains blood pressure and body temperature.     But the problem with homeostasis is that it only cares about survival in the short term. The system doesn't want to improve. It only wants to maintain its current state.     It creates a strong gravitational pull to stay in the current comfort zone that is very hard to resist. Imagine a jealous friend who doesn't want you to make progress in life because they fear you will abandon them.     Of course, the problem with homeostasis is that it holds you back from pursuing your dreams or goals. It's about survival right now, not about success or fulfillment in the long term. Those things are scary for homeostasis.     Homeostasis is also tightly connected to our habits. When you make some behavior habitual, it becomes part of your homeostasis. That habit comes easy but breaking it is difficult.     After learning about homeostasis, I realized that I could make it work for me rather than against me.     I had to break through it initially with willpower. But then my homeostasis would shift and new habits would become easier.     I did this with my social media and porn addiction. The first two weeks were brutal as I was breaking through the resistance of my homeostasis. But then going got much easier.      With time, it became easier to maintain the new homeostasis. That resistance I broke through now became my support. I remembered how I hated my old life with all those addictions. What do you make of it ❓     Back in 2014, I started with small steps in my NoFap transformation. I started with one day as my first NoFap goal.     It gave me a measurable target to focus on, reducing my anxiety. I also had something to look forward to, even though that something was a relapse.     When I hit my target, I also felt proud immediately. I felt I developed tiny momentum from that first streak.     Then I set two days as my next NoFap goal. The momentum I had made two days a little bit easier.     That's how I went from one small goal to another.     After 8+ years, I don't track NoFap days anymore but I am still the counting guy in many other things. I do it to see my progress. I also use this as a reminder of my goals. I hate the idea of resetting my streak in any kind of good habit that I am implementing. Take sleep or food intake, for example.      Now if you feel that counting days is holding you back, experiment with not counting days. Instead, make days count by adopting a lifestyle of making the right choice every time.      Make a promise to yourself that fapping is in the past. I didn't want to get out of my room and get rid of PMO. I didn't want a girlfriend. I didn't want to travel. I didn't want to live a passionate life. Until I realized I actually wanted those things. I'd been lying to myself. That's how I got motivated for my No PMO brain recovery. With that motivation, I started getting my life together. After I started NoFap I also rewired my brain to get pleasure from activities that used to feel boring. I felt more motivated to do those activities. For example, while I was addicted to PMO, I'd feel the urge to distract myself with PMO every time I sat down to work. That's because I taught my brain knew this was a reliable source of pleasure. But now I felt motivated to fight that distraction. My brain went, "Okay, now I can't get pleasure from distractions. Where do I get it?" And the answer was, "Work and other productive activities!" I didn't need to get distracted to feel pleasure anymore. I felt motivated to get it by doing something productive instead. Accomplishing small goals started to give me pleasure. Especially now that I also increased the number of dopamine receptors. I want to address those common critiques in this walking podcast episode. I will explain why I to curing your brain from porn helps with self-improvement. Critique # 1: I am not addicted. I watch it recreationally. Indeed, some people can do PMO recreationally just like I can drink a glass of wine once in a few years and not become an alcoholic. My goal is not to convert those people. My first goal is to increase awareness of the dangers of PMO among those who don't recognize them. Especially kids. Here's an example from someone reaching out to me for help: “I'm 18 and I have been masturbating since 16 and I realized that it affected my grades and life negatively. I will sit for a bachelor's exam in 3 months but I want my mind and soul to be clearer. Is a month enough time to recover and regain the clever brain I once had?” My second goal is to use my stories and strategies to motivate people who are seriously addicted to PMO and need help. Critique # 2:  You are selling unscientific cr*p. There's actually pretty convincing scientific evidence about the problems with PMO. For example, a 2022 study from Switzerland looked at how porn influences men and women. Here's what they found for men: “A higher frequency of porn use (wave 1) and increased porn use over time (waves 1–3) were associated with lower levels of sexual self-competence, impaired sexual functioning, and decreased partner-reported sexual satisfaction.” https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/psychological-medicine/article/porn-use-and-mens-and-womens-sexual-performance-evidence-from-a-large-longitudinal-sample/665B68D9E195A19B5825F9411B059927 Critique # 3:  Counting days doesn't work. You should make NoFap a lifestyle instead. Look, if you have the willpower to go NoFap Cold Turkey, I applaud for me. For me, counting days was very useful. It helped me admit that I was an addict and needed to work hard to get rid of the addiction. Plus, tracking my progress motivated me to keep going. Critique # 4: Why do you say masturbation is bad ❓ I don't think masturbation is bad. In fact, it's healthy. It only becomes a problem when used excessively, compulsively, and in conjunction with porn. I actually believe that having a regular controlled release is a good thing as long as you don't use it as an excuse not to look for a romantic partner.  Critique # 5: Why do you propose extreme semen retention ❓ I actually don't. I don't think it's healthy. When I was quitting PMO, I reduced my bad habit to masturbating once a week with no porn. I believe whenever we don't use any part of our body, it atrophies. And so does the reproductive system. I am not a doctor, though, and I am not giving medical advice. Critique # 6: Stop moralizing. I actually agree with this. Sometimes, I might fall into moralizing. But I think there is enough stigma in the NoFap community already. By moralizing, we might make people feel unnecessarily guilty and worthless. The alternative is humor—making fun of ourselves. After all, we are a bunch of evolved monkeys on a spinning rock.  Critique # 7: You aren't PMO-free. It's up to you to believe me or not. I will only say this:  I've been PMO-free for almost 9 years now. And I regret that I hadn't done it in my teenage years.     Anti-NoFap Study: My Response (He Is Hero Podcast Ep. 55)

    A study released in February 2023 offered some critique of NoFap as a community. The study name is Iatrogenic effects of Reboot/NoFap on public health: A preregistered survey study. Let me respond to some of the ideas from the study.   → “Pornography addiction” is an unrecognized diagnosis. I will reply with a comment Dorian made on my blog: “I've also been consuming porn for 15 years, now starting my journey. I recognized it as a problem a few years ago, but I'm just now realizing how bad it really is. Until now I've made excuses or just pretended it isn't a problem even though I knew the truth. I'm totally lethargic and demotivated.”   → Qualitative studies have consistently suggested that “Reboots” paradoxically cause more distress. The distress appears to occur in response to (1) the abstinence goal, which recasts common sexual behaviors as personal “failures.” Honestly, I don't think this distress is that bad. In fact, it's okay to feel distress when you are pushing yourself to improve yourself to get rid of a bad habit. You are getting out of your comfort zone, after all. I'd recommend decreasing the distress by getting support, though. Part of that distress is indeed unhealthy. You might feel shamed or bullied. You might feel something is wrong with you. But that's not true. You are a good person. It's just that PMO addiction is getting the best of you. Then, it's key to see the distinction between porn and masturbation. Masturbation is not bad. It's a natural way to release sexually when you can't have sex. Sex should be a priority, though. Excessive masturbation becomes a problem when it's a waste of time and energy. And a coping mechanism. And an excuse not to be social and seek real sex. Finally, porn is poison. Kill me, hang me but porn is poison to guys. Porn is bad to your brain just like weed is. You can consume it and convince yourself it's helping you but on the backend, it's killing you.   → (2) problematic and inaccurate Reboot/NoFap forum messaging regarding sexuality and addiction. Participants reported that their most recent relapse was followed by feeling shameful, worthless, sad, a desire to commit suicide, and other negative emotions. More engagement in NoFap online forums was associated with worse symptoms of erectile dysfunction, depression, anxiety, and more sex negativity.   Well, I felt porn-watching was wrong for me way before NoFap became a thing. The problem is not about NoFap as a particular community. I think that overall, they have a positive message. But are there still particular people in a community who are toxic ❓For sure. And that's normal. Now if you feel your self-improvement goal is not supported by this community, don't go there. Or filter what they write.   → Results support and expand previously documented harms and problems with Reboot/NoFap claims of treating pornography addiction from qualitative research. This is a controversial topic. See some of the studies above that talk about the dangers of porn for sexual confidence in men and the stability of relationships. Whenever someone takes PMO to an extreme, it's easy to attack them. Perhaps, the answer is common sense and moderation.     I want to fap only… actually never. I've been porn-free for 8 years now and PMO is no longer an option. However, excessive or compulsive fapping can interfere with daily activities, relationships, and overall quality of life.   On the other hand, success can bring a sense of accomplishment, financial stability, and personal fulfillment. Pursuing success often involves hard work, perseverance, and dedication, which may require sacrificing some immediate pleasures or desires.   Ultimately, the decision of whether to prioritize masturbation or success is a personal one that depends on your values, goals, and priorities. It may be helpful to reflect on what you want to achieve in the long term and whether your current habits align with those goals.   If you find that excessive masturbation is interfering with your daily life or preventing you from achieving your goals, it may be helpful to seek support from a healthcare provider or coach. They can provide guidance on how to manage sexual desires in a healthy way and develop strategies for achieving success.     I've been porn-free for 8 years. During this time, I had two short relapses in 2017 and 2018. So technically my current No PMO streak is 5 years.     Healing from porn is necessary if you feel adult films are a problem in your life. You need healing when you feel addicted to them as a coping mechanism. In this sense, healing from porn is like healing from alcohol abuse. Alcohol becomes a problem when you depend on it and can't say no even if it hurts your long-term goals.  Now someone might have an alcohol addiction but not a porn addiction. And they might wonder why someone would get addicted to porn. And vice versa, a porn addict who doesn't care about drinking won't see why an alcoholic would want to abuse the bottle. The point is that we are all different and have different genetic setups or emotional triggers which cause us to watch porn or drink. Despite our differences, we need to support each other in accomplishing our personal goals. That's how healing from porn happens (or healing from alcohol).
