In the summer of 1978, Bracha Goetz – a Harvard graduate who had just completed her first year of medical school – flew to Israel for a six week working stint at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. After two weeks, she had left medicine and was studying orthodox Judaism full-time in a women's seminary. I met Bracha in the summer of '85,  living in a trailer in a West Bank settlement, managing four young children and already a prolific author of children's books. Having had no contact for close to 40 years, we spoke recently; about her views on spirituality, Judaism, the ethics of West Bank settlements and the particularly challenging period in Israel today. And no, she did not return to Medical School. One of the most moving – and entertaining – parts of our conversation is when she relives that phone call; when she told her mother and father that she was changing her life course. Very dramatically. And not returning to America. Bracha's wild ride in life – especially with spirituality and Judaism – is particularly interesting to hear and contemplate in these days between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.Bracha Goetz is the Harvard-educated author of 41 Jewish children's books and a candid memoir for adults, Nourish the Soul, about her journey to becoming Torah observant.  You can meet her books at www.goetzbookshop.com. Helping Children Shine with Bracha Goetz Not your typical Harvard graduate, Bracha Goetz is an award-winning Jewish children's book author who has written over 41 picture books that cover deep subjects and translates them for children to understand at their level. An avid reader growing up, Bracha could never find books covering the sensitive issues she was going through, from eating addictions to abuse to struggles with finding who she really was. From the outside, Bracha looked like she was living her best life, but on the inside, she was silently struggling with no one to turn to.  Like so many others, her addictions became a prison to her, and things started to unravel. After graduating from Harvard, it was in her first semester of medical school that she started to hit rock bottom.  Seeking help, Bracha spoke with a school counselor who told her that it seemed Bracha was searching for something spiritual. So, that summer, she decided to go on a 6-week excursion to Israel and ended up staying 10 years.  While in Israel, Bracha would immerse herself in learning everything she could about her roots and heritage.  She found the spiritual answers she so desperately was searching for and discovered the meaning of her life. Now the Goetz Bookshop & Publishing House owner, Bracha spends her time holding workshops to help others find ways to shine while continuing to write books that nourish the soul. Listen in as Bracha, and I discuss her own struggles with identity and addiction, the journey to Israel that changed her world, and how she has made it her mission to help children shine spiritually, embrace their uniqueness, and live their FEARLESS HAPPYNESS.

We wanted to bring on a guest that has experienced this type of relationship with food, so this show is about, How Overeating was Cured by Climbing the Pleasure Ladder! Have you ever had that feeling where you eat and 30 minutes later you're hungry again?  It makes no sense. You KNOW logically you shouldn't be hungry, but here you are starving. And on top of that, you have no idea what you're craving. You don't know what you're hungry for. So you eat the comfort foods, you eat the ice cream. Because those things usually do the trick and satisfy you.  And an hour later you're hungry again! So you think you're starved for nutrients so you try something healthy. But you're still not satiated.  Here's the thing, this kind of hunger doesn't just apply to food. It's a pattern that'll show up in many aspects of your life, including your work!  So how does this hunger apply to work? It starts when you think there is not enough time to get everything done. And I know you're thinking, “Um, Genea, that's every day of my life.” Just hear me out. You start working longer hours because you need to get everything done. You start getting less and less sleep. Because you're getting home later, and when you lie in bed your brain is spinning about what you have to do. You can barely get moving in the morning, but you get up and get your butt to work. You must get it all done!  You use all the things to get you through the day. More caffeine, more food, more sugar. You must override how tired you are because you must do more. You must get more done.  In the back of your head, you're thinking, “Once I get everything on this list done, then I can relax.”   So you keep going, and you push harder. But as soon as you get it all done, you see 10 more things that need to be done.  There is no rest for you.  But what you don't realize is that this pattern is a sign you have an insatiable hunger. You are hungry for doing more. And no matter how much you do it will never be enough.  I know you think there will be some magical endpoint, but there's not. And if there were, you would have already found it because you're smart and hardworking.  The key to stopping the hunger is to make yourself realize you're already full.  So how do you do that?  I'm glad you asked. This hunger is exactly what Bratcha Goetz and I are going to talk about on this week's podcast. And we'll give you some tips for stopping the hunger in all areas of your life. Because you deserve to feel like you can put the work down. You deserve to feel full and satiated, so you can feel happy in all areas of your life.  Connect to Bracha Website: https://www.goetzbookshop.com/ Bracha Bio:   Bracha Goetz is the Harvard-educated author of 41 books that help children's souls shine and a candid memoir for adults about overcoming food addictions joyfully. We have presented WASP episodes recorded from places like Nepal, Australia, and the U.K., now we'll add a new one, Israel. This is a very uplifting episode with author Bracha Goetz. Bracha overcame disordered eating as a young woman and used that victorious experience to discover meaning in life. This led her to learn from a rabbi about the Pleasure Ladder, which focuses more on the spiritual pleasures in life where we can find happiness in ways that feeding short-term addictions like through eating foods laden with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients cannot. Bracha and I exuberantly chat about simple steps you can take to eat better, find greater long-term fulfillment in life, experience joy, and more. Her study of spirituality has led her to be able to provide very insightful guidance for overcoming the negative voices in your head that lead to addictive behavior and instead live with gratitude. Bracha is the author of more than 40 books, most focusing on how to keep your family safe, healthy, and joyful. Her latest one is cleverly entitled, “Don't Read This Book.” Of course, getting her books published wasn't always successful, so I also love her simple advice for overcoming rejection. I had never spoken with Bracha before, and had a real kick sharing her passions. I think you'll love Bracha's energy and her very practical advice.Bracha Goetzthegoetzbookshop.comFacebook and LinkedIn Bracha GoetzInstagram @brachagoetzbooksBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
