Eugene Ashe first entered the filmmaking business as a recording artist, where he landed on soundtracks for Free Willy and The Bronx Tale. While reading these scripts, and others, he started to see movies and television in a songwriitng sense. As a screenwriter, Ashe has credits for the documentary Home Again and films Homecoming and Sylvie's Love. In the latest project, the story follows a young woman who meets an aspiring saxophonist in 1950s Harlem. In this interview, Ashe talks about making movies rooted in humanity rather than trauma, writing screenplays to music, his formula for making Indie films, how to change the energy in pre-production, and why creatives need tunnel vision to make work at the best of their capabilities. Are you currently enjoying life with your soulmate? Are you pushing through with your best line of fit or have you abandoned your fairytale romance and settled for a scatter plot? So, what's a scatter plot? Sorry, no spoiler alerts. You'll have to tune in to find out. This week on The First Run, Chris and Matt take head down to southern Florida and spend ‘One Night In Miami'. Regina King's adaption of the play brings Malcom X, Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke, and James Brown together to tackle the lives and obligations to the struggle. Can Matt be won over after expressing last week his disdain for play adaptations? Then it's over to NYC in the early 60's for ‘Sylvie's Love'. Tessa Thompson stars in this throwback to the romance films of that era. But can any of us find true love and happiness? There's the always stupendous review of the big releases on Physical Media, featuring the Straight to DVD and Streaming Picks of the week. The show then closes with Matt and Chris beginning to share their favorite films of 2020. First up is part 1; films 10-6! Will your favorites make the list? In this fresh serving of HYST, Hammond recruits the usual suspects of Breen & Mercer to gather their thoughts on the latest film happenings. Luckily to lend them a welcome hand the team are joined by yet another industry vet/legend, the very lovely and articulate Andrew Turner. Andrew (who dialled into the pod all the way from Helsinki!) has been working in cinema for 30+ years for the likes of ODEON, Cineworld & 20th Century Fox to name a few. The gang have a good natter with him about all things film buying and distribution, talk about ANOTHER delay for 'No Time To Die', celebrate the news 'Godzilla Vs Kong' is being released sooner, pick their FAVE one shot takes from film & TV and lament the Academy for always getting the Oscars wrong. Of course, it wouldn't be a new pod without some #opinions and we review two new films - the charming 'Sylvie's Love' [Amazon Prime 2020] and the harrowing 'Pieces Of A Woman' [Netflix 2021]. Enjoy! Amazon Prime really hit the mark with this beautiful love story filled with so much rich subtext worth some discussion. It may be a lush, powerful love story about a Black couple but their love is truly universal.
"Sylvie's Love" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival where critics praised its lead performance from Tessa Thompson, the beautiful romance at the heart of the movie, the classical style which resembles the Golden Age of Hollywood and its costuming by Phoenix Mellow. We were lucky enough to chat with Pheonix about her work on the film which you can listen to down below. "Sylvie's Love" is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Enjoy!
