Episode 34: Interview with Franklin Ritch

On the thirty- fourth episode of ATFT, I talk with writer/ director/ editor Franklin Ritch!  Franklin Ritch, one of Jacksonville's most prominent filmmakers, has worn many hats since he was a child. Once he was gifted a video camera by his grandmother for Christmas, there was no slowing Franklin down. His earliest projects were stop motion shorts, and he continued to make films through middle school and high school. His work only proved more versatile in terms of stories, characters, and genres when making a series of short films, such as "Bedridden" and "New Wings: A Batgirl Fan Film" under his production company Last Resort Ideas. Franklin's debut feature film, The Artifice Girl, had quite a successful film festival run. Franklin has been named one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” by Filmmaker Magazine. Franklin is without a doubt on the rise and a filmmaker who I'm sure you'll be hearing more about in the years to come.  Franklin's latest project is the highly- anticipated sci- fi short film, "Last Weekend". The short is set in the distant future where aliens have taken over Earth while humans live in reservations and follows two aliens who approach humans intending to help… but the humans are skeptical. While the plot is mostly under wraps at the moment, the film is largely a commentary on colonialism, specifically the treatment of indigenous communities in America. Franklin directed, wrote, and edited this film. "Last Weekend" reunites the team behind The Artifice Girl, including actors David Girard and Tatum Matthews. If you look closely in the final scene, you may spot past ATFT guest, Bernardo Goya! "Last Weekend "is currently in the midst of a film festival run and is expected to release this Winter! While you're waiting for "Last Weekend" to be posted on YouTube, check out Franklin's past work on the Last Resort Ideas Youtube channel by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/c/LastResortIdeas  This is Franklin's first appearance on ATFT! We were introduced through our mutual friend, Bassel Jadaa, nearly a year ago at joint WIFT x Jacksonville Film Bar event. It was in this first meeting that I asked Franklin to come on the show, for which he was absolutely down for, and over the course of the year I've gotten to know him by chatting with him monthly at Film Bar. He's one of the people I look forward to chatting with most each month since, aside from being very kind and humble, we both share a strong passion for cinema. Since we mostly talk about cinema rather than our own work, it wasn't until I started preparing for this episode that I realized just how brilliant and rare of a filmmaker Franklin is. The Artifice Girl was without a doubt remarkable, ahead- of- its- time debut feature film, but watching Franklin's films and videos from high school is what blew me away. There is not one bad film or video posted through the Last Resort Ideas Youtube channel. His early work is incredibly well made in all aspects from writing to acting to special effects, proving how gifted he is as a filmmaker. For this reason, this was one of the most exciting interviews I have ever had the pleasure of conducting. This episode was recorded on December 5, 2024.  In this episode, Franklin talks about his connection to film and filmmaking as well as his early work up to his recent projects such as The Artifice Girl. Up and coming filmmakers will greatly benefit from learning about Franklin and his drive to making his cinematic dreams a reality. Franklin also talks about his integral relationship with frequent collaborator Britt McTammany, what he gained as a filmmaker from being on the set of his mentor Mike Flanagan's new film The Life of Chuck, and why the end of each of his films contain a credit for “Marlon Brando's chest”. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Clicking on individual events will take you to the appropriate web page. Any other business It's been another hectic month here at HPR Towers. As we discussed on the mailing list most of the time was taken by the migration to Mastodon, and the implementation of the mirrors on the Community Content Delivery Network. Some daily stats are been updated on https://hub.hackerpublicradio.org/hpr_ccdn_stats.tsv Summary of the changes to the repo https://repo.anhonesthost.net/HPR Dave updated his tooling for processing shows and they are now available on the Gitea repo. We finally got around to creating the HPR Documentation wiki. Community Content Delivery Network (CCDN) A location to track the deployment of the HPR Community Content Delivery Network, that provides a mirror network for our content. HPR Website Design This is literally in the whiteboard phase of the HPR website redesign. Where we can track Compatibility of the clients subscribed to our feeds. Useful Resources Where we can link to other free culture sites that provide useful services. Requested Topics Where we can track topics that have been requested, and link to shows that addressed them. There is also a list with information about Podcatcher and Podcasting Platform Compatibility. If anyone wants to adopt a player then please do so. The section on Workflow will be changing shortly due to Dave stepping aside, and also the need to distribute to multiple end points. All the processing will happen first, and then all the checks will be done at the same stage just prior to posting. For this to work we need help finding a simple manageable WYSIWYG editor that can produce sane HTML when the host uploads the show. We also need a new system to distribute the files from an origin to all the mirrors. Other changes and fixes. The day of the week is now available on the website. Fixed the RSS feed to show explicit status. Fixed a bug that limited the future feed to just 10 shows. Fixed a typo in the status page. Following feedback, added emphasis about the upcoming two weeks, to the scheduling guidelines. Notable shout out to the people who are promoting HPR and are helping people out with audio issues. Provide feedback on this episode.

Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! On this week's show, we review the comedy-drama American Fiction starring the brilliant Jeffrey Wright (The Batman). Here, Wright plays Thelonious ‘Monk' Ellison, a struggling writer unable to make waves in the literary world. Forced to spend more time in his native Boston, Monk, under a pseudonym, finds unlikely success by writing a satirical, cliché novel littered with tropes from Black writers. And that's when the real problems begin.  Check out the show for our thoughts.  On Anniversary Corner we look back at I, Robot (2004). We are already half way through January in 2024, yet 2023 is now in the rearview mirror. It's time to take a look at the prior year and go through all the many films that came out that were considered horror and genre films. Dark Discussions and its co-hosts puts together their review of all that was good and bad in 2023. Was it one of the better years in genre cinema or did it have too many missteps to be remembered? Each of your co-hosts put together a list of movies they thought were good enough to recommend. Two lists were procured. This included a list of horror films and a list of other speculative fiction films. Afterwards we then combined those lists and came up with the Dark Discussions definitive lists in both categories as best of the year. Some obvious films like MEGAN (M3GAN) and EVIL DEAD RISE appear but also little known films like THE ARTIFICE GIRL and VENUS were too. Also included are some of our “sometime co-hosts” choices and what they felt were the best of the year. And don't forget our top and worst scenes, scream queens, breakout star, and anything else you can think of. Dark Discussions wraps up last year in a nice tight bow and gives their listeners a good many films to go out and search for.

Earlier in 2023, the film MEGAN (2023) arrived to theaters. The movie was about an artificial intelligence (AI) robot/toy that began to make its own decisions that turned it into a murderous monster. The science fiction subgenre including AI is suddenly “fresh” with the subject lately in the news. The latest movie to be released about the subject is THE ARTIFICE GIRL (2023) that's getting some notice.Law enforcement Deena (Sinda Nichols) and Amos (David Girard) think they have found an anonymous social media vigilante. They bring in Gareth (Franklin Ritch) to question him about his work and some online activity he's been a part of. When a little girl named Cherry (Tatum Matthews) seems to be a pawn in a pedophile sting, Deena is determined to find the girl and bring justice.Besides starring as Gareth, THE ARTIFICE GIRL is directed and written by Franklin Ritch. Also appearing is Lance Henriksen in maybe his largest and important role since the 1990's. The film appears to be a science fiction thriller but changes topics as the movie goes along. Your co-hosts take a look at this little film and give their thoughts.

Newcomer Franklin Ritch joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss the making of his debut feature THE ARTIFICE GIRL. From learning his craft through acting in theater and making short films… to tackling the incredibly difficult subject matter of child predators and artificial intelligence with a minimal cast in an (almost) single location story for his first feature film… to the decision to cast himself as one of the main characters… to working with the great Lance Henriksen… to the delicate process of directing a child actor through heavy dialogue that deals with child abuse and futuristic technology… to shooting during the pandemic on a schedule that broke production up over a year and a half… THE ARTIFICE GIRL is a film that begs to be seen and Franklin is definitely a filmmaker to watch! The boys also discuss “intermissions” in films, have another brief geek-out over STAR WARS, and debate the pros and cons of bringing actors back from the dead to the silver screen.

Franklin Ritch delivers a stunning debut The Artifice Girl, a small, intimate indie that asks BIG questions about the future of AI and continually finds exciting, thought-provoking, and startlingly human results. Imagine Shane Carruth making a hybrid of Ex Machina and The Social Network with the narrative structure of Steve Jobs, and you're in the ballpark. The Q&A with writer-director-editor-star Franklin Ritch was an absolute blast and full of wonderful info on this special little film. This film is the real deal, and well worth seeking out.

We do not know anything about the current writers strike in Hollywood. But that won't stop us from giving our opinions. Plus, the Dune: Part Two trailer and a new Babylon 5 movie.Science fiction has long explored the intersection between humanity and technology. The Artifice Girl seems like it is going to be just another to add to the pile - an AI program used to catch online predators has advanced beyond its original purpose. It defies expectations, but will audiences like it?During the opening weekend of John Wick 4, one trailer stood out. Sisu is an over the top, violent, and bloody World War II adventure. The story involves Nazis, gold, and a cute dog, but it is the bonkers action that is the real draw. Just because a movie is crazy does not mean it is good, however.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. The film stars Tatum Matthews (The Waltons: Homecoming), David Girard (short “Teardrop Goodbye with Mandatory Directorial Commentary by Remy Von Trout”), Sinda Nichols (That Abandoned Place, “Bubblegum Crisis”), Franklin Ritch and Lance Henriksen (Aliens, The Quick and the Dead). Director, screenwriter, editor and actor Franklin Ritch joins us for a conversation on how he came to write the script for The Artifice Girl, his thoughts on the very complicated choices that will need to be addressed with the ascendancy of Artificial Intelligence in our lives, working with a cast of relative unknown actors, and how habits of compassion and kindness could be a by-product of everyday AI.
