This week on the Side Woo we talk with LA-based artist and former long-time Bay Area resident Kelly Lynn Jones.  I was really inspired by Kelly's story and asked her to come on to talk about how she in 2018 she made the decision to file for bankruptcy for her store Little Paper Planes, which was a super cute boutique on Valencia Street in the Mission District of SF.  It came as a bit of a shock to those on the outside and I was really impressed by how transparent Kelly was while going through this challenging time that many would look at as a failure. But instead, Kelly saw it as a chance to change her life. She and her family eventually moved back to LA where she grew up, and began recommitting herself to her art practice.  Three years after returning, Kelly's first solo show in LA sold out affording her the chance to pursue her art more seriously than she had for a decade since graduate school. BONUS: Listen all the way to the end for some special ghost-related content. Spoiler: it involves ouiji boards. Really people don't use them. About Kelly Lynn Jones Kelly Lynn Jones (b. 1977 Los Angeles, CA) is a Los Angeles-based artist. Harpist Eira Lynn Jones joins us to chat about her work with the Juniper Project, a flute and harp duo that performs and records not only the most virtuosic repertoire, but also the approachable repertoire that they enjoy coaching. We speak about Eira's work as a composer of chamber music, as well as her connection to the Music in Hospitals program. Eira shares some of her background as someone who “did everything backwards”, having gone from a full-time orchestral position to a freelancer's career. Welsh harpist EIRA LYNN JONES is a versatile musician, who has a passion for creativity and originality. Her eclectic career ranges from orchestral work, recordings and commissions to chamber music collaborations. She is known equally for her committed, dynamic playing and her innovative, dedicated teaching. While a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, Eira won numerous awards, including a Guinness Foundation Scholarship and an I.S.M. Performer Award, resulting in her BBC Radio 3 debut on the ‘Young Musicians' series. Further studies with Kathleen Bride at the Manhattan School of Music in New York led to a Masters Degree. Invited to join the Manhattan Contemporary Music Ensemble, she premiered new works for harp, which ignited her interest in researching unusual and varied repertoire. She did indeed take her harp to the party; to Carnegie Hall, the Aspen Music Festival, Banff Centre of Performing Arts and Creativity, and even to the top of the Empire State Building! On returning to the UK she was appointed Principal Harp with Northern Ballet Theatre. She now regularly freelances with the UK's leading orchestras, including Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Opera North, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. As soloist, she has performed Debussy Danses with Manchester Camerata and Ravel's Introduction and Allegro with Northern Chamber Orchestra. Eira is also widely recognised as one of the UK's leading harp teachers. As Head of Harp at the RNCM she loves inspiring young musicians, receiving many invitations to run workshops worldwide, including USA, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Sweden and Iceland. She achieved notable success with her solo album ‘... from within', which is a mix of classical and folk pieces on both pedal harp and clarsach: "I love the album ... a diversity of music, a very accomplished technique, and your heart coming through" (Alan Stivell). From performing at the Hollywood Bowl to under the much loved “Dippy” dinosaur at the Natural History Museum; from appearing in Coronation Street to playing for HRH Prince of Wales in Spain; from recording with the heavy metal band “Venom” to accompanying Kiri te Kanawa; from directing the music of John Cage for 20 harps to leading the RNCM Young Harps Project, Eira approaches each project with passion, and is a true ambassador for this most magical of instruments. Video version of event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhUPCAlaKQ0 We hosted the Halifax Launch of Desmond Cole's The Skin We're In & he is joined by poet, professor, and activist El Jones, anti-racism activist Dr. Lynn Jones, and Fatouma Abdi who challenged Prime Minster Justin Trudeau to stop the deportation of her brother Abdoul Abdi. A bracing, provocative, and perspective-shifting book from one of Canada's most celebrated and uncompromising writers, Desmond Cole. The Skin We're In will spark a national conversation, influence policy, and inspire activists. In his 2015 cover story for Toronto Life magazine, Desmond Cole exposed the racist actions of the Toronto police force, detailing the dozens of times he had been stopped and interrogated under the controversial practice of carding. The story quickly came to national prominence, shaking the country to its core and catapulting its author into the public sphere. Cole used his newfound profile to draw insistent, unyielding attention to the injustices faced by Black Canadians on a daily basis. Both Cole’s activism and journalism find vibrant expression in his first book, The Skin We’re In. Puncturing the bubble of Canadian smugness and naive assumptions of a post-racial nation, Cole chronicles just one year—2017—in the struggle against racism in this country. It was a year that saw calls for tighter borders when Black refugees braved frigid temperatures to cross into Manitoba from the States, Indigenous land and water protectors resisting the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, police across the country rallying around an officer accused of murder, and more. The year also witnessed the profound personal and professional ramifications of Desmond Cole’s unwavering determination to combat injustice. In April, Cole disrupted a Toronto police board meeting by calling for the destruction of all data collected through carding. Following the protest, Cole, a columnist with the Toronto Star, was summoned to a meeting with the paper’s opinions editor and informed that his activism violated company policy. Rather than limit his efforts defending Black lives, Cole chose to sever his relationship with the publication. Then in July, at another police board meeting, Cole challenged the board to respond to accusations of a police cover-up in the brutal beating of Dafonte Miller by an off-duty police officer and his brother. When Cole refused to leave the meeting until the question was publicly addressed, he was arrested. The image of Cole walking out of the meeting, handcuffed and flanked by officers, fortified the distrust between the city’s Black community and its police force. Month-by-month, Cole creates a comprehensive picture of entrenched, systemic inequality. Urgent, controversial, and unsparingly honest, The Skin We’re In is destined to become a vital text for anti-racist and social justice movements in Canada, as well as a potent antidote to the all-too-present complacency of many white Canadians.

I first met Tori Lynn backstage at WRMF’s No Snow Ball, where she and I geeked out together over seeing Adam Lambert walk down the hall toward us, and the rest was history! So, when I asked her to be on my podcast, I could think of no better place to record than in the shadows of where we met: outside of the Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca. A naturally-gifted singer and performance artist, Tori Lynn won her shot at opening for Adam Lambert and Third Eye Blind at No Snow Ball by winning WRMF’s Dirty Voice Contest. From early releases like "Labyrinth of Love" and "Nobody but Me" to her latest tracks, including “Mama Said,” “Young and Free,” and “Fading Lightz,” Tori Lynn has garnered an incredible following. And, she has great affection for her fans! Her motivation is spreading positivity and inspiration, along with raising awareness for an incurable disease that has affected her family: Cystinosis.
