See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you are not moving as rapidly as you would like toward your goals, chances are that there is too large of a gap between your current behavior and the most-of-the-time behavior that the goals require to achieve them. Take advantage of the fact that you have the ability to change that. So … just change that now! The more reasons you have for achieving your goals, the more likely you are to take the steps necessary to achieve them. Welcome to the “Practice With Me” podcast. The practice of singing can serve beautifully as an object of meditation.Music unfolds in real time and can center us in the present moment. Singing involves the flow of both imagination and movement, and helps to integrate body and mind. It helps us to explore our inner world of feeling and to connect with others. Earlier in my career, I used mindfulness techniques to teach singing. Now I think of singing as an effective, enjoyable way to teach mindfulness. This podcast will explore the intersection between singing technique, Buddhist philosophy, mental and physical wellness, and humanism. Today we took a new look at an old question: What does it take to become a really, really good copywriter? I wanted to answer this question by zeroing-in on the path of mastery. I've been learning about the path of mastery for a long time. What I found out goes against what I learned in school and what I see on TV and in the movies. Our culture celebrates achievers but it does NOT respect the path of mastery very much. I'm lucky in that I know a number of copywriters who are well along this path, including a few who are personal friends and a few more who are my mentoring clients. To prepare for this show, I went back to the books I've been reading since 2009 to flesh out my ideas and observations. A few surprises, some new information. But nothing that goes against anything I've noticed and concluded up until now. So what I did was pick some key points from great books about mastery, and weave all that together with some practical, down-to-earth tactics and approaches for getting really, really good at copywriting. The way I see it, in copywriting, the word “mastery” is a term to describe having so many skills and so much knowledge at your fingertips that what you do looks effortless to someone watching you. It's not really effortless, but it's certainly different, when you do something after having prepared yourself to get really good and having done it in a certain way. And there is a known and documented way to get to this place. A better way to say it is: to get on this path. Because mastery, it turns out, is much more a path than a place. It's more a journey than a destination. It's more a way of continuously working on your skills, rather than a badge that you put up on your website. When you're well along the path of mastery, you may be able to solve problems and come up with ideas in a fraction of the time it takes someone with less experience to do the same thing. When you do it, often seems effortless to the person watching. If they knew what was going on under the hood, they would know better. It's not excruciating, but it's not always that easy, either. In copywriting at the highest levels, being able to perform at a high level is important. Why? Because somehow, as copywriters we find ourselves, in situations where we have to fix things or change directions under great time pressure. If you have the ability to go with the flow in situations like that, it can make all the difference in the world. On today's show, we didn't talk that much about the amazing feats of master copywriters. But we took a really good look at how they got there and how you can get there, too. Because when the heat is on, you'll want to be there yourself. When everyone's counting on you, you want them to feel good about how you perform. The advantages are: you have more choices and more opportunities. You end up working with more interesting people on more interesting projects. And, last but not least, you end up getting paid a lot more money. Here are the four parts of today's show: Part 1: Practice Doesn't Make Perfect — But Practice for Mastery Keeps Making You Better and Better What famed cello player Pablo Casals said about practicing. The definition of the kind of practice that makes mastery possible from the leading expert in the field, Anders Ericcson. Plus more from author Daniel Coyle and Robert Greene. Part 2: The Two False Flags On The Path Of Mastery My favorite expert on mastery is the late writer George Leonard. Some important insights from him on what the path is like, along with two misleading signs to watch out for, and why they occur from time to time. Part 3: So What Do You Practice, Anyway? Killer wisdom from martial art great Bruce Lee, as well as a couple other great insights from master teacher of hypnosis Igor Ledochowski and author Robert Greene. Also, a key finding from neuroscience about mastery, from author Daniel Coyle. This part of the show gives you a clearer picture of how practice fits into your journey as a copywriter. George Leonard he stated already in the late 90's that we, society want everything fast and now. I just remind you about my Ericsson… Instant -and other than instant noodles, - this is obvious , its not how results are produced. But hey Heiko, isn't that what you are doing? Well yes. Exactly the aim of using mental techniques that give you a quick paradigm shift, will stir emotions that show a glimpse of that things could be different. And this short insight will then lead to a openness a willingness to explore and use mental techniques in the long run. That's why I say my books on Amazon or short quick powerful guide, if you want to complex and detailed studies don't buy my book. But if you want to learn how to get the ball rolling, this might be a good option. It has got to do with getting into the flow. That level of where you are bored, doing the same old run at same old pace, compared to that speed workout maybe that day when you decided to join other faster runners and you instantly realize this is just too fast. So that most productive state is that fine line between too bored, and too difficult. Thanks for listening do share it with someone who you feels could use today's message, my name is Heiko. God bless you and remember, take it easy. SHOWNOTES: What does this mean for your running? Here some useful links. The same pitfalls that can trip us up along the path to mastery in our sport can trip us up in our pursuit of following Jesus. George Leonard outlined 13 pitfalls in his book "Mastery", and this episode focuses in on the second pitfall of obsessive goal orientation. While result goals are paramount in our pursuit of better, they can also trip us up if we obsess over them. Result goals set the direction of our steps, but it's our focus and our commitment to each step that gets us to where we want to go. This podcast is for athletes and coaches that are doing their best to follow Jesus. It's devoted to connecting Biblical truths to mental performance principles, so you can compete with a deeper purpose and perform at a higher level. If you're looking to grow your faith and your game, then this podcast is for you.
When we pursue mastery, we're choosing a path that has ups, downs, and plateaus. George Leonard outlined 13 pitfalls along the path to mastery in his book appropriately titled, "Mastery". Those same pitfalls that can trip us up along the path of mastery can trip us up in our pursuit of following Jesus. This episode reminds us that it's our unseen hours that will determine how far we go, what we'll achieve, and what we'll ultimately experience in our relationship with Jesus. This podcast is for athletes and coaches that are doing their best to follow Jesus. It's devoted to connecting Biblical truths to mental performance principles, so you can compete with a deeper purpose and perform at a higher level. If you're looking to grow your faith and your game, then this podcast is for you.
I say this all the time – but today's interview is one of my favorites of all time. Jamie Wheal is a talented conversationalist, killer writer, and the author of Recapture the Rapture, a supremely high-level how-to book, if you will, on how people might recapture the individual bliss and collaborative magic that we've strayed so far away from. We assess society at this stage of de-evolution before delving into ways Jamie has uncovered that we may deepen our understanding, and thus, our experience. Then, we spend some time talking about sex – past the stigmas and social strcutures put in place to distract and confuse us – to hone in on what a deeply spiritual and connective practice it can be, if you let it. We wrap with a thoughtful dissection of what makes a bad cult, and what makes a good one. Jamie delivers his insight without even a hint of pretentiousness; he's honest, hopeful, and confident – giving his words an inviting warmth that I know you'll enjoy. 00:07:34 — A Critical Juncture for Humans Recapture the Rapture by Jamie Wheal 17k-foot hike to a hot spring full of snakes Connection between “Rapture” and “rapture” The Woodstock/Burning Man of 1803 American spiritual soup Why we can't hear the centrists 00:34:23 — Ascension is Possible: Finding Meaning 3.0 William James and nitrous oxide (The Atlantic) Substances as a tool Your brain on nitrous oxide Intentionality is everything Ritualistic use in tribal Western New Guinea 00:59:01 — Sexual Practices to Deepen Your Experience Illuminating the lack of research on sexuality Unique nature of human sexuality Sex magic and hermetic traditions Creating a more exalted experience Truly making love 01:31:34 — Building Ethical Cults Luke's first (and second) cult Building communities that support each other Red flags for spotting and avoiding a culty cult Metaphysics, ethics, and sacraments Exploring the work of Lisa Feldman Barett The Follow → Fuck → Fear → Fight cycle 12 traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous Highlighting the influence of Alice Walker and Joanna Macy Celebrating the work of Ken Kesey, Robert Anton Wilson, and John C. Beloved Hoffman teacher and coach, Max Gaenslen, holds this question as the focus for his life and life's work: "What is the difference between people who really connect to that divine spark within them and find fertile soil for that seed to grow in the world - and people who don't?" The question first came to him in 2004 while riding on a Greyhound bus. Once it hit him, he immediately knew he needed to live this question. Today, the common thread running through all that Max does is the belief that the Light exists in everything and that we all have innate genius and gifts. In conversation with Sharon, Max explores what lights him up - human potential and the journey of awakening into the body. He shares a multitude of viewpoints from which to look at the process of spiritual awakening and emphasizes awakening our body and heart. You will hear Max's infectious love of his life's work. One of Max's other joys is drumming. At the age of eleven, Max first heard the drum solo in All the World's a Stage, by Rush. It was then that he decided he wanted to become a drummer. More about Max Gaenslen: Along with being a Hoffman teacher and coach, Max Gaenslen is a Senior teacher and trainer of George Leonard and Michael Murphy's Integral Transformative Practice and George Leonard's Leonard Energy Training. He is the Coordinator of Esalen Institute's Center for Theory & Research. Max is also a California state-certified “Education Specialist.” Max is also a drummer and percussionist. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in creativity and entrepreneurship, Max began his career in business consulting. Max did the Hoffman Process in 2005, then shifted his career direction to focus on transformative education and workshops for adults, as well as working extensively with adolescents in a therapeutic context. He worked for thirteen years in San Mateo County's Therapeutic Day School program and has taught workshops and programs for such organizations as Esalen Institute, ITP-International, Greenheart Transforms, and The Institute of Noetic Sciences. As mentioned in this episode: The Future of the Body: Explorations Into the Further Evolution of Human Nature, by Michael Murphy. Quotes Max shares: "The winds of grace are always blowing, but you have to raise the sail." -- Ramakrishna "The flesh, itself, is waking up." -- Michael Murphy Transcendence ("Up and out"): When we transcend, we move up and out of the body. Embodiment ("Down and in"): Moving down into the body and deeper into its interior. Drumming as a way to bash! Max talks about drumming as a way to bash negative patterns. Bashing is one told to use during Expression, how we let go of our patterns. We exercise our free will – choose to step out of a pattern, and take action using our Voice, Body, and Intention.

I am super excited to be sharing this conversation with Richard Fransham. Richard told me how early in his teaching career, he read “Education and Ecstasy” by George Leonard and that set him on a course to becoming a strong advocate for self-directed learning. He now focuses his advocacy on the mental health of young people, which has two core ingredients: social justice and self-determination. He explains how these ingredients form the basis to self-directed learning. Richard has initiated The Youth Rights Day to provide youth and their supporters with the opportunity to show the power of their combined voices. You can find out more by checking Richard's website

Inner tubes and the illusion of the control. Reframe the game -> successful right now. Karmic vs. capitalistic framing. “Have your second child first.” Alert and calm. “Trust your stuff.” Interoception. The pretzel. State management > time management or stress management.
