This past week, DC and Warner Brothers pushed out their first comic book team-up film and it stars a cast of villains instead of heroes. But is it any good? On this week's episode, we're digesting it all, from Jared Leto's Joker to the Justice League tie-ins. We're even breaking down the criticisms DC fans have been mounting on film critics and Rotten Tomatoes for negative reviews of the films. Everyone's a critic, and this week, so are we with our review of Suicide Squad.
After we tore apart this year's first superhero battle in our review of Dawn of Justice, we're back to talk about the next big battle in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. Find out the answers to those questions and more in our review of Civil War.
From 'Civil War' and 'Suicide Squad' to 'Ghostbusters,' 'The BFG' and 'Finding Dory,' we look at the big comic book, sci-fi and family films coming our way this summer. Enjoy the show!
Ever since we first launched the Hey You Geeks podcast, we've been discussing our qualms with DC's Cinematic Universe. We've reviewed 'Man of Steel' in the context of the mythos of Superman. We've broken down every single Batman film to determine which is best. And we've pitted DC vs. Marvel in a discussion on the dark and light sides of the superhero genre. Now, the time has finally come for 'Batman v. Superman,' a film we've been anticipating with equal parts curiosity and dread. Did we enjoy the film? Or, did it live up to our fears? Listen to this week's show, our full, in-depth review of 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,' to find out…

One of the best TV shows of 2015 was Ash vs. Evil Dead, the Starz adapted series based on Sam Raimi's legendary Evil Dead films. The show's first season ended last week, so this week on Hey You Geeks we look back at the series with a number of roundtable chats we held with the cast and crew at last October's New York Comic Con. Have a listen to hear our interviews with creator Sam Raimi, show-runner Craig DiGregorio, effects mastermind Roger Murray and actors Bruce Campbell, Lucy Lawless, Jill Marie Jones, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo. Enjoy the show...
With recent news regarding Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, and Cline’s new book Armada now available, this weeks Hey You Geeks is about the writing, cultural impact and geekdom of Cline’s work. After that, we discuss the wave of new Force Awakens images that were released this week and the box-office bomb that is Fantastic Four. Enjoy the show...
This week on Hey You Geeks, we’re running through the big news, announcements and trailers from this years San Diego Comic Con. Oh, and we're doing it from the East Coast. That's right, we didn't attend this years geek Mecca, but you better believe we have a lot to discuss. From trailers and insights into Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad, to Lucasfilm's Comic Con takeover, Marvel's absence and World of Warcraft, there is a ton of movie news to discuss. Beyond that, we're breaking down the TV shows of SDCC to determine what we'll be tuning in for this fall, be it Ash vs. Evil Dead, Fear the Walking Dead or the new Muppets series. Before that, we talk about the news of Jonn Bernthal's casting as the Punishers for the second season of the Netflix Daredevil series, and why the Punisher character may finally have his moment to thrive. We end the show with a remembrance of the legendary Christopher Lee, who sadly passed away late last week, as well as with a brief announcement of a new, Star Wars related podcast we're prepping for launch later this summer.
This week on Hey You Geeks, we’re breaking down what we're considering the best movie of 2015 thus far; Mad Max: Fury Road. We talk about everything from Fury Road's storied production, feminist themes and how it stacks up to the first three films to its box-office performance and George Miller's direction. Our talk about box-office inevitably leads into a conversation regarding the controversial comments actor Simon Pegg made last week regarding superhero movies and geek cinema. We dig deep to understand his point of view and predict how we see the future of the film industry changing in the next few years.
This week on Hey You Geeks, we're presenting our geek certified 2015 summer movie preview. This week on Hey You Geeks, we’re following up our talk on dark and light superhero movies with a deeper look at Daredevil, the new Marvel/Netflix series we would argue has revolutionized superhero storytelling. After that, we do what Hey You Geeks has done since episode one, and talk about the franchise to top all franchises; Star Wars. While we sadly missed attending this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, we have our own little celebration on this week’s episode, sharing our thoughts on the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer and what emotions being “home” stirred in us diehard fans.
This week on Hey You Geeks, we’re talking about the dark and light sides of comic book movies, piecing together how the dark New York of Marvel’s new Daredevil series will fit into the often lighter-themed MCU. We’re also looking at DC’s new cast of brooding faces and debating where darkness does and doesn’t belong in superhero movies. But first, we explain a little more about the podcast, and cover some news on the upcoming Ghostbusters multiverse and the first Star Wars standalone film, Rogue One.
This week on Hey You Geeks, we’re talking about the awesomeness that is the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. We’re doing a bit of speculating, a lot of geeking out and touching on some of the criticisms of the trailer, many of which are completely preposterous and disconcerting. This leads us to talk about the new Terminator film and sequels in Hollywood today, using film marketing as the basis for a debate on what we see as a lack of originality in and imminent implosion of movies as we know them. We’re also discussing the casting announcement of the Suicide Squad movie, with a debate on the pros and cons of Jared Leto in the role of Joker. Finally, we share some thoughts on news of Mark Hamill’s return to The Flash, Ryan Reynolds return as Deadpool, and more.
This week, we’re talking all about comics! With the recent influx of new Superhero books on shelves, it’s a great time for change in the comics landscape and the perfect time for new readers to jump on. We’re talking about everything from the new Superior Iron Man, All-New Captain America and Lady Thor titles to new event titles including DC’s Batman: Endgame and Marvel’s AXIS. We also talk about the new and many titles interweaving (pun intended) Marvel’s Spiderverse. After that, we sift through some news and rumors about the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Atari: Game Over and Jurassic World.
Last week, we attended our local comic convention, Rhode Island Comic Con, with the goal of interviewing some of the cons amazing guest lineup for Hey You Geeks. Turns out, the con was a case-study on how not to run a convention. The geeks came in force, but the con just wasn’t equipped to handle the masses. This got us to thinking about the state of geek culture. As experiences have shown, geek culture is booming, but we wonder; Is this the peak? In the long shadow of geekdom, a sub-culture built from outcasts and niche obsessions, what does it mean to be a geek today? After pondering these questions, we end the show with the two fun interviews we did manage to grab at RI Comic Con, one with Reb Brown, the first Captain America, and the other with Sesame Street and Great Space Coaster puppeteer, Jim Martin.
There’s much to discuss after last weeks unexpected, announcement-heavy press/fan conference put on by Marvel Entertainment to announce Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).There’s so much to talk about that we’ve invited Bryan White of Cinema Suicide on to break it all down with us. From Doctor Strange, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther and Inhumans to Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and finally, an announcement of a Captain Marvel movie, we’re talking potential plotlines, casting and crossovers. We also talk about the remaining films of Phase 2, Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron and how Marvel’s new slate of films shapes up against DC’s upcoming superhero slate. Finally, it wouldn’t be Hey You Geeks without a little bit of Star Wars talk, so we’re sharing our thoughts on the Episode VII concept art that leaked last week.
We’re back from this years New York Comic Con, the biggest mass media and geek culture conglomeration on the East Coast. We have a lot to talk about, from the Birdman panel with Michael Keaton and Edward Norton and Batman’s 75th Anniversary panel to the Occulus Rift, the new Daredevil series and more. Cons can be a daunting and overwhelming setting, so we’re sharing our experiences, both wins and losses, from battling panel lines, contending with floor traffic and planning ahead as a guide to doing Comic Con the right way. We also offer our opinions on the state of geek culture and shifts we observed at this years con.
Gotham, the biggest new show of the Fall and perhaps the biggest television premiere of the year, has finally arrived. Las year, we dedicated an entire episode of Hey You Geeks to breaking down all of the Batman films, so you better believe we’re all over Gotham. The big question is; did we like it? Did you? We’re dissecting it all; story, character and setting to determine whether or not Gotham is the Batman (though technically not) series comic book fans like us have been waiting for. After that, we talk about news suggesting there will finally be a Deadpool movie, weigh in on the True Detective season 2 casting and discuss the big purchases of Twitch and Minecraft that have shaken up the gaming industry.
When we decided to do a double-feature episode on Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem and Ari Folman’s The Congress, we had no idea how deep of a sci-fi journey of existentialism we were in for. This week, we are looking at these two, slightly under-the-radar movies (both recently released in select theaters and on VOD) that absolutely moved us. Our conversation goes deep into religion, technology and the importance of thought-provoking stories in science fiction. The question is, were we moved in positive or negative directions? All that, plus we talk about some new things were reading and playing as well as our new geeky obsessions for the week.
Fall movie season is right around the corner. This week, we take a look through the slate of movies coming this Fall in search of anything exciting coming from the genre world. Unfortunately, the pickings are slim, with a few movies we’re excited about (Mockingjay, Birdman, The Zero Theorem, Interstellar), a bunch we’re mildly intrigued by (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Space Station 76, Horns, Automata, Maps to the Stars) and some others that we just don’t care about at all. All that, plus we talk about some new Marvel news that may spare us from our case of origin fatigue.
Finally, Guardians of the Galaxy is out in theaters and Hey You Geeks are here to offer our review, dive into those easter-eggs and post-credits teasers and talk about our most anticipated movie of 2014! There are loads of spoilers, so if you haven’t yet seen the film, check it out before listening. After our Guardians breakdown we’re talking about Marvel’s new Thanos led graphic novel by Jim Starlin; Thanos: The Infinity Revelation. We also discuss the six-year slate of dates DC and Marvel have released for their upcoming films, speculating on what films and franchises could pop up in the future.

We’re one week away from San Diego Comic Con and already the big comics news is breaking. Marvel announced a new Avengers team led by the newly outfitted Superior Iron Man, a female spinoff of Thor, the new Captain America (formerly Falcon) and a handful of other interesting characters pointing towards greater diversity in the comics landscape. This week, we’re breaking down what this means for the series and the industry itself. We’re also reviewing the new, surprisingly epic return of Damian Wayne in DC’s new series, Robin Rises: Omega as well as sharing our thoughts on The Strain, the TV spinoff of Guillermo Del Toro’s book and comic series and our thoughts on Universal’s announcement of plans to spinoff a whole new Universal Monsters multiverse.
The big question of the week is; Why do overstuffed, critically panned films like Transformers: Age of Extinction continually break box-office records while great films like Snowpiercer are left to struggle with a limited release? Luckily, it turns out that Snowpiercer is about to break into a wider release, but will it bring financial success? We look back across the 1980’s and 90’s in search of a trend in summer box-office. Does conformity trump originality when it comes to tallying box-office receipts or is summer box-office an enigma with no definable trends to point to? We do our best to find an answer. After that, we discuss new comics, Disney World and more of the latest Star Wars news, including Kevin Smith’s set visit and the addition of Rian Johnson to the SW team.
E3, the biggest videogame showcase in the world just ended, so for episode 26 of Hey You Geeks, we’re looking through the massive list of game announcements to preview the games we’re most looking forward to. In celebration of the Ghostbusters 30th anniversary we’re breaking down the qualities that make this movie great. From the cast, effects, story and score to the animated series and merchandising, we’re celebrating every aspect of this timeless film. We even go so far as to discuss the cast that could have been if the films original casting plans were realized. But first, we review the biggest surprise of 2014 thus far, the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt led Edge of Tomorrow.
In episode 24 we’re reviewing the latest comic book movie to hit theaters this Summer, X-Men: Days of Future Past. We’re discussing the idea of canon as it exists in todays comic book movie landscape. We’re also talking about a lot of the big news, rumors and shakeups in Geek Cinema over the past couple of weeks. From Edgar Wright’s departure from Ant Man, the first picture of Ben Affleck as Batman, Jurassic World plot details, trailers for new DC shows The Flash and Constantine, changes on the Netflix Daredevil series, Star Wars spinoffs and more, we certainly have a lot to discuss.
For episode 23 we invited Director Richard Griffin back on the show to discuss his latest, post-apocalyptic action film Future Justice. We’re discussing the making of the film as well of some of Richard’s other films, Nun of That and The Disco Exorcist. In a greater discussion about the post-apocalyptic genre itself, Richard discusses some of the films that inspired Future Justice, like the Italian post-apocalyptic wave of Bronx Warriors and Fall of New York. Our conversation eventually turns to the world of indie filmmaking and some of the challenges and privileges of working on the indie level.

Amazing Spiderman 2, Godzilla and Guardians of the Galaxy to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Days of Future Past and more, we look at the big comic and sci-fi films coming our way and ponder why, on Batman’s 75th anniversary, we don’t have a new Batman film to look forward to. First, we discuss the unofficial summer kickoff film of 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and its implications on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. All that, plus Star Trek 3 rumors, DC Comics questions and so much more.

With the new Syfy series set to premiere on March 25th, a new Muppets film in theaters and this week marking the 15th anniversary of Farscape, theres no better timing for an episode devoted to the imagination geniuses at Henson Studios. From the Creature Shop itself, Peter and John discuss past projects including the Dinosaurs TV series, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films, Where the Wild Things Are and more. Then, we discuss the practical effects vs. CGI debate and what that might mean for the future of special effects.
Episode 18 of the Hey You Geeks podcast is a grab bag of film trailers, the Oscars, upcoming video games and in true Hey You Geeks fashion, lots of Star Wars digressions. We’re talking about the new trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, Transformers: Age of Extinction and Annie, yes Annie. We also discuss the Oscars and which actor we thought was most deserving of the big bald guy this year. To our surprise, Rocksteady released a trailer for a new Arkham game this week, so of course we discuss that development. Finally, our talk about the final season of Star Wars: Clone Wars coming to Netflix evolves into a discussion about Adam Driver being cast as a villain in the new Star Wars film. It just wouldn’t be Hey You Geeks if our conversations didn’t lead into a Star Wars debate.
In episode 17 of the Hey You Geeks podcast we’re talking about what it means to be a geek parent. As dad’s with kids on both ends of the age spectrum, we discuss what movies and TV shows we enjoy watching with and exposing our kids to, as well as what our kids have exposed us to in return. From problems with the toys of today to the importance of immersing kids in fantastical worlds, we cover it all. We’re determining which film is the biggest disappointment of the year and which sci-fi films met or exceeded our expectations. Do we think it was a great year in film, or another nail in the coffin of theatrical film distribution as we know it? Listen to find out. We also look back at what was a fantastic year in comics, celebrating stellar superhero titles like Batman and Guardians of the Galaxy and recommending some even better indie titles you might have missed.
In episode 14 of the Hey You Geeks podcast we are diving deep into the cavernous collection of movie, comics and video game news that has come out over the past few weeks. So much has been announced that we thought it would be fun to talk about it all and see where the conversation takes us. Spoiler alert: it takes us all over the map. We discuss new trailers for Godzilla, Jupiter Ascending, Edge of Tomorrow and The Amazing Spiderman 2. We offer insight and snark about the potential for new Indiana Jones films from Paramount and Disney. We reminisce over the long lost culture of the video store. In the extra-big 13th episode of the Hey You Geeks podcast we are breaking Batman. With yet another new Batman incarnation in the works with Ben Affleck, we thought it would be fun to pick through each of the live action Batman films from 1966-2012 in search of their failures and successes. We’re breaking it all down, from the music, villains and acting to the scripts, world-building and batmobiles. Starting with Batman: The Movie in 1966, we move through Burton’s Batman films, Schumacher’s missteps and Nolan’s reinvention, digging deep and going back to the source comics to figure out what worked, what didn’t and what should be considered moving forward with a new Batman franchise. This is a fun one, so, to steal a line from Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze; “Chill out’ and enjoy the show!
In episode 12 of the Hey You Geeks podcast we review Thor: The Dark World, the latest film from Marvel Studios. We’re breaking everything down from the films story, end-credit teasers and a particular actor who steals the show…again. We’re also discussing Marvel’s film and TV plans for each of their three phases of entertainment domination. Part of that domination includes Marvel’s live-action TV presence with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a group of new series’ coming exclusively to Netflix. Inevitably, our Marvel talk devolves into more predictions on where Disney (who own Marvel) plan to take the Star Wars franchise. It happens.
Last week, Hey You Geeks attended New York Comic Con, a geek mecca second only to San Diego Comic Con. On this week’s show, we talk about what we saw from the convention floor and what we learned at some of the Con’s biggest panels from Lucasfilm, Marvel and DC. We also discuss some of the problems with massive fan conventions like New York Comic Con, including the inexcusable levels of sexual harassment endured by a number of cosplayers last weekend. We end the show with an exclusive interview with author Diana Gabaldon and showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) about their collaboration to adapt Gabaldon’s Outlander series for television. Did you attend the show? What were your highlights? What are your thoughts on cosplay and harassment?

In episode-eight of the “Hey You Geeks!!” podcast, we talk about the biggest news to come out of the 2013 San Diego Comic Con as well as the minimal news to come out of last weeks Star Wars Celebration Europe. Is a Batman/Man of Steel crossover film a good idea? Does Avengers: Age of Ultron really need to make such drastic character changes? Are the Sentinels in Days of Future Past everything we’d hoped for? Will the next Star Wars animated series be better than Clone Wars? Listen to hear our thoughts.
In episode-seven of the “Hey You Geeks!!” podcast, we look at Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro’s biggest movie to date, and determine where this robot versus monster epic falls in the awesome to awful category. Is this another Transformers or a transition back to the classic and original films long absent from summer blockbuster season? After that, we speculate on what big movie, comics, videogame and TV news we most hope to learn coming out of this weekends San Diego Comic Con.
