On this week's episode, Cody enthusiastically shares with Joe the latest adaptation of the iconic science fiction film Starship Troopers, which has been reimagined by the talented writer and director Neil Blomkamp. Blomkamp, known for his unique visual storytelling and thought-provoking narratives, brings a fresh perspective to the beloved source material. Cody delves into the specifics of this adaptation, discussing how it aims to capture the essence of the original while introducing new elements that resonate with contemporary audiences. He highlights the innovative special effects and the thought-provoking themes that Blomkamp is renowned for, creating anticipation for fans of the genre.Transitioning to another popular franchise, Joe informs Cody about the remarkable success of the Halo TV series, which has gained a significant following on Netflix, particularly outside the United States. This unexpected popularity sparks a discussion about the global appeal of video game adaptations and how they are finding new audiences in international markets. Joe expresses his surprise at the show's reception, considering the mixed reviews it initially received, and they both ponder what factors contributed to its rise in popularity, such as engaging storytelling and strong character development. As the conversation shifts, Cody provides a detailed breakdown of the rumors circulating after the shocking death of a major character in the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again. The unexpected twist has left fans reeling, and Cody explores the implications it may have on the storyline and character arcs moving forward. Joe listens intently, sharing his own theories and speculating about how this bold creative choice might impact the series' reception and its connection to the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.Joe then expresses his disbelief that The Minecraft Movie hasn't already been released in theaters, given the immense popularity of the game. He reflects on the potential for such a film to either soar to great heights or crash and burn at the box office, considering the challenges of adapting a game with such a loose narrative structure. This leads to a broader discussion about the risks associated with video game adaptations and the expectations that come with them.Continuing along the theme of adaptations, the conversation turns to Disney's apparent lack of confidence in the upcoming live-action remake of Snow White. Cody and Joe analyze the marketing strategies employed by Disney and how they reflect the company's faith in their projects. They discuss the mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, particularly regarding the casting choices and the changes made to the beloved story, which have sparked significant debate within the community. This naturally leads to a conversation about the backlash surrounding other live-action remakes, focusing on the new Lilo & Stitch film. Joe expresses his frustration at the vocal complaints from fans regarding changes made to characters and storylines in these adaptations. The duo examines the balance between honoring the original material and updating it for modern audiences, pondering whether filmmakers should prioritize nostalgia or innovation when reimagining classic tales. As they continue to reminisce about cinematic history, Joe recounts the notorious disaster that was the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993. With its convoluted plot and stark departure from the source material, the film has become a cautionary tale for future adaptations. Cody and Joe dissect what went wrong with this film, reflecting on how it has impacted the perception of video game movies ever since and what lessons can be learned from its failures. Finally, the discussion takes a fascinating turn as they dive deep into the works of David Cronenberg, exploring his distinctive filmmaking style and the themes that permeate his body of work. They analyze how Cronenberg's films often blur the lines between horror and science fiction, delving into the human psyche and the complexities of identity. This exploration reveals their admiration for Cronenberg's ability to challenge audiences and provoke thought through his provocative storytelling.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 2013 dystopian cyberpunk social commentary ELYSIUM – written and directed by Neill Blomkamp; starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner. In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.Elysium was the follow-up film for Neill Blomkamp after he exploded on the scene in 2009 with District 9, which garnered a Best Picture nomination and countless Top-Ten lists. This is Blomkamp is full cyberpunk mode and he does a great job of exploring the thematic signatures of our favorite sub-genre.So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. On the latest episode of Cinematic Underdogs, we chat about Gran Turismo, Neill Blomkamp's rousing, kinetic, feel-good hit racing flick released at the tail end of the summer box office rush in 2023. Much more than a video game IP-grab, Gran Turismo is an unbelievable true story about a young SIM-racer, Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), who is chosen to compete at an academy and become a real-life racer. Much like Yann's transition from simulation gaming to actual racing, Blomkamp showcases his versatility, adapting a screenplay that is packed with heartwarming albeit cliche sports tropes and mainstream beats. Glossy and tidily packaged, the film uses platitudes to achieve an high-octane pacing that hits a lot of beloved sports movie beats. All the actors are on their A-game. David Harbour plays a has-been racer turned mechanic who begrudgingly plays a mentor with a tough outer shell that slowly melts away. Orlando Bloom plays Danny Moore, an entrepreneurial maverick who concepts a madcap marketing ploy to turn SIM-racing GT gamers into professional racers. Geri Halliwell (yes, of the Spice Girls) plays a supportive mother who cooks lentils. Djimon Hounsou plays a blue-collar ex-soccer playing father who worries about Jann's future and chides his son for excessively gaming. Mixing tragedy with inspirational zeal, and commenting on the symbiotic nature of digital/virtual SIM-racing and physical/analog race car driving, Gran Turismo has enough heart and subtext to satisfy one's emotional and intellectual needs. It's narrative is filled with spoon-fed exposition to maximize mass-appeal and some of the story beats are predictable and manipulatively rearranged, but overall it does the trick, creating a film that entertains and motivates in equal measure. Enjoy our episode as Mikey from Screen Nerds Pod joins us to celebrate and champion this underdog of a movie (which is now streaming on Netflix!).
Ben & Rob exorcise 2021's ‘Demonic' as the train of their Neil Blomkamp series rolls through its most controversial stop yet. Released in the midst of a global pandemic that had forced the total shutdown of society, and made with a budget of less than two million dollars, ‘Demonic' explores what happens when you enter a virtual reality hosted inside the comatose mind of your serial killing, demonically possessed mother. Starring Carly Pope, Chris William Martin and Michael J Rogers, Blomkamp's fourth film is one of many firsts - his first horror, his first small budget feature, and his first total critical and commercial failure. But can Ben convince Rob that there's a single thing to love about this bold new direction for Neil Blomkamp? As his life falls apart around him, can Rob make it to the end of the episode? Ben & Rob strap on an exo-suit and set sail for ‘Elysium', Neill Blomkamp's 2013 sophomore cinematic symphony of love, death and robots. Set in a dystopian future where the poor live on a polluted and scorched Earth while the ultra-rich live off-world on space station Elysium, he tries to cover themes of global inequality, immigration and healthcare whilst providing the guttural action and scifi splendour that have become his calling card. But despite having an all-star cast in Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley, has Blomkamp bitten off more than he can chew with the broad themes? Why do Ben & Rob have such wildly different takes on this entry into his filmography? And what do the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have to do with any of this? It feels like an absolute no-brainer... Involving our users in the design process. We've all seen the outcomes of services that neglected this step. In the best case, these services that looked great on paper just get no adoption in the market. In the worst case, they cause harm to certain communities. Within service design, we know that co-designing solutions is a way to minimize this risk greatly and to deliver services that meet the needs of our users. Yet, involving users in a meaningful way is easier said than done. The challenges can be overwhelming, like ensuring that co-design happens before the key decisions are made. So, what does it take to good co-design? Well, in this episode, Marc sat down for a chat with Emma Blomkamp. Emma is a respected expert in our industry around anything and everything co-design. Emma's insights on good co-design go beyond processes, touching on its often-overlooked mental aspects. Because knowing the right steps in a co-design process is meaningless if it leads to burnout. We explore how to cope when things don't go as planned, maintaining a light approach around loaded topics and finding the support for creating deeper, more human connections. All in all, it is an inspiring conversation for when you want to do justice to the people you're designing for while also taking care of your own mental well-being. It's easy to forget that we sometimes need to take a break and reflect on our own practice to develop a clear perspective on what good looks like. I'm grateful that Emma reminded me of that. Sports movies are tricky. So are video game adaptations. Thankfully for Gran Turismo, rather than attempt to spin a narrative out of gameplay, the plot capitalizes on the unique opportunity to showcase its game (that's actually an extremely advanced driving simulator) through Jann Mardenborough's extraordinary real-life journey from gamer-to- professional race car driver. In Neill Blomkamp's (District 9) hands Gran Turismo is slick, well-paced, and visually engaging. The storytelling weaves the game creation by Kazunori Yamauchi (Takehiro Hira) backstory in but really revolves around British teenager Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe). It's a highly relatable story of a young man who dreams of a career that seems beyond his means to achieve. He gets a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to prove his worth and make his dreams a reality. His adventure starts with winning a competition designed to identify the best Gran Turismo drivers in the world. The prize: access to a specialty racing academy run by Nissan and a chance to earn a spot on their professional racing team. Gran Turismo's solid ensemble performances, dynamic race sequences (based on real races Mardenborough participated in) and the light Hollywood gloss on the chronology keep you invested right through until the end. It's imminently watchable as racing movie. This is a move based on a marketing ploy turned Cinderella story so expect to see the products in question on screen. However, you'll be pleasantly surprised that Blomkamp stayed the narrative course all the way through. Listen as Ro and Kriss discuss Gran Turismo now. ** Writers: Jason Hall, Zach Baylin Runtime: 2h 15m Starring: Sophie Wilde, Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto Synopsis: Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver. With Simon still chugging along on the UK's glorious waterways, beloved actor and Take fave Sanjeev Bhaskar steps in to chat nonsense – ahem, review films - with Mark. Sanjeev speaks with director Neill Blomkamp about his new stranger-than-fiction biographical sports drama ‘Gran Turismo', covering everything from Blomkamp's motivations for making the film to the challenges of shooting in a moving race car - or as the directors puts it, a “motion sickness, nausea machine”. Mark offers his thoughts on Blomkamp's new film, which sees a young man win an opportunity to become a real racing driver because of his prowess playing the Gran Turismo video game. He also reviews ‘Haunted Mansion', a star-studded remake of the Eddie Murphy-helmed 2003 supernatural comedy of the same name, which sees Rosario Dawson and Lakeith Stanfield take the spooky baton; and ‘Meg 2: The Trench', indie director Ben Wheatley's stab at a sequel for the arguably soon-to-be-cult-classic prehistoric shark franchise. As we bring this Blomkamp miniseries to a close, we end in a place we never expected: one of empathy, appreciation, and understanding. It's easy to lose sight of the human behind the headline. Neill Blomkamp underwent some very public suffering during the events surrounding his unmade Alien film. And Ridley Scott, despite his prickly exterior, is a person with feelings and frustrations as well—and Alien: Covenant is a window into those frustrations. This final installment is dedicated to listener feedback, and it's your listener feedback that brings us to that place of empathy. This episode is a wild ride, and it's one we'll always remember. Almost exactly eight years after our first episode aired, we return to the topic that started it all: Neill Blomkamp's unmade Alien project. In this first episode of a miniseries we're devoting to the Blomkamp situation, Jaime, Patrick, and Christian take a trip back in time to 2015 and examine the sequence of events that led to the very public conversations about whether or not this thing was going to get made. It's not every first time director who hits it out of the park with their first feature, especially one based on an original idea, with an unknown cast. Luckily (or rather unluckily for Halo), an existing project that had brought them together had crumbled, and so a partnership began between powerhouse producer Peter Jackson, fresh off his The Lord of the Rings trilogy and newcomer Neill Blomkamp. Based on Blomkamp's 6-minute short film Alive in Joburg, District 9 takes South Africa's recent history and translates it into a science fiction satire, asking the simple question of "How would humans treat alien refugees?" and is it really any different to "How would white people treat black people?" While District 9 has its controversies and critics, it was a fresh and interesting take on the alien invasion genre in 2009, and while you would have thought a sequel would be forthcoming rather quickly, District 10 has never quite materialised... Elyisum Elysium is a 2013 American dystopian science fiction action film written, produced and directed by Neill Blomkamp. It stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Alice Braga, and Sharlto Copley. The film takes place on both a ravaged Earth and a luxurious artificial world called Elysium. Back to Blomkamp again. This time we talk about his vision of a world divided by a massive wealth gap, both figuratively and literally. We discuss juxtaposition, lighting and samurai themes before diving into the world of ring worlds.
Chappie Chappie is a 2015 American dystopian science fiction action film directed by Neill Blomkamp and written by Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell. It stars Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman, Ninja, Yolandi Visser, Jose Pablo Cantillo, and Sigourney Weaver. The film, set and shot in Johannesburg, is about an artificial general intelligence law enforcement robot captured and taught by gangsters, who nickname it Chappie. Back to Blomkamp and his vision of South Africa. We discuss the appearance of rap artists, characterisation of CGI robots and the odd mix of documentary and narrative styles that Neill is known for. On the science front we discuss transhumanism and the quest we have for being better than ourselves. We normally use a still from the film for our episode image, but who could resist this photo from the premiere of Neill Blomkamp's Chappie? It perfectly encapsulates the bizarre appeal of the film, which assembles an enviable cast of blue-chip movie stars and reliable character actors, then has them play support to a Johnny 5/Robocop hybrid and a South African rap group, not necessarily in that order. This week, Andrew from Behold! returns to Pop Screen to authorise the launch of the Moose, by which we mean talk about Chappie's insane tonal shifts, its wincingly misjudged ending and the chequered career of Blomkamp following his smash-hit debut District 9. There are fewer mad tangents than usual, largely because the whole film is a series of mad tangents. Get ready to go Zef! Whatever that means! The earmarked joes discuss the 2015 Blomkamp feature CHAPPiE. Yo this is like the coolest movie I ever saw. There is water at the bottom of the ocean and there are white people at the bottom of Africa. There are robots there, too. For a little while, about 10 years ago, we fell in love with this very unique accent.

It's been 6 1/2 years since Neill Blomkamp released his third film. Little did anyone that realize while the film industry was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Oscar-nominated director was shooting a secret supernatural, horror film in the hills of British Columbia. Receiving a limited theatrical run--Blomkamp's fourth film came out to little fanfare. To make matters worse, critics and audiences alike absolutely hated the film. There is a time shortly after the release of Prometheus and before pre-production on Alien: Covenant where things get ... murky. Ridley Scott was doing interview after interview, talking about a planned trilogy (or was it a quintology?) of prequel films in the coming years. The rumor mill on Prometheus 2 (or was it Paradise Lost?) was in full swing. Things were happening. In this installment in our ongoing exploration into Alien: Covenant, Jaime and Patrick are joined by Aaron Percival of AVP Galaxy to comb through those early days in a search for answers. What happened to Lindelof? How did Blomkamp's art dumps change the narrative? We dive into all this and more in this archaeological dig of an episode. Dê o play neste RdMCast especial e descubra! For a while Neill Blomkamp seemed to inhabit a unique space in modern filmmaking - big original science fiction films. Then Chappie happened. Listen as we dive into the three films of Blomkamp starting with District 9, the critical darling that garnered a Best Picture nomination, and ending with Chappie, basically a reimagining of Short Circuit. And in the Mailbag, we'll be responding to some letters about Neill Blomkamp and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Opening Banter: There was no episode on Friday but this week is D23 Expo 2019. In the News: Brad - ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation' Animated Series Revival Coming From Kevin Smith at Netflix Ben - Jason Momoa Has Seen the Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League', and He Has a One-Word Review Ben (og Chris) - ‘Venom 2' Will Be Shot By Cinematographer Robert Richardson Brad: Disney Aiming to Crack Down on Password Sharing with Charter Communications Cable CompanyBrad: Disney+ Announces Compatible Devices for Launch and International Pricing Plans In The Mailbag: Haisam (Pronounces Hi-Sam) from Egypt writes in “On the August 15th episode, while discussing the RoboCop news, you guys brought up Neill Blomkamp and Chris mention how he thinks he's a bad filmmaker. While I agree, Blomkamp filmography is bad, I don't think the guy keeps falling upwards or the implication that he's a hack. I find Blomkamp to be an interesting filmmaker with one major flaw. He is a technical and visually driven director who puts a tremendous effort and attention to detail in the image and has total command and control over it, yet has no sense of storytelling. Just like Gareth Edwards, and to some extent, Zack Snyder, his skill as a writer is far behind his skill as a visualizer. Blomkamp's approach to action and spectacle is very uniquely his own. It has intention and clear point of view, and doesn't just go for the flashy overstimulating bombast that amounts to visual noise. While his style feels influenced by video game cut scenes, it's done in a way that is dynamic, and shows an understanding of the cinematic medium. If you get a chance to check any of the ART OF THE MOVIE book of one his films you'll see how deep and fledged his approach to the process is. It's just that despite all this micromanagement and focus on the frame, he lacks that nuanced perspective when it comes to the bigger picture and story. Which is why I don't think he has not made a good movie yet. There is still a lot of promise though, and I wouldn't write him off yet. Love you all, keep up the good work.” Some responses to our Once Upon A Time In Hollywood spoiler discussion:Gokul from Auckland, NZ writes in: I have just listened to your spoiler-cast on Once Upon A Time in Hollywood ( a little late I know but NZ only got the movie here last week), and I was really caught up by your discussion about whether having prior knowledge about the Mansons and Sharon Tate was needed to really get the most out of this movie. What really interested me was that most of the crew seemed to think that the background knowledge wasn't needed and in Chris's and Ben's point of view, the audience should already know about this as part of their education. I thought I would share my thoughts from a perspective of someone brought up outside of the United States, and who wasn't around when these events occurred. Personally I think this movie actually requires you to do some homework and learn about Tate and the Mansons. My girlfriend and I both saw the movie together and while I had some cursory knowledge about the events, my girlfriend was going in blind as this era in American history is not taught in the NZ curriculum. What that meant was, the build up to the end and the anticipation of what was going to happen was kind of wasted on my girlfriend. I mean, she knew that something could happen to Rick and Cliff but the added dread about what could happen to Sharon was simply missing for her. In fact, she couldn't understand what the point of Tate's role in the film was. To my girlfriend, it just seemed like the audience was following her around, seeing her day to day life for no reason and with no real payoff. This was probably compounded by the fact that Robbie did not have a lot of dialogue or even a seeming arc compared to Dalton or Cliff. I would say that the sweetness and sensitivity felt towards Tate was due mainly to what the audience knows happens to her and so the little moments with Tate took on added meaning. Since I had a vague idea of her story, her role made more sense to me. Funnily enough, once we saw the movie, my girlfriend and I both went home and read up on the Mansons and Tate, and suddenly the movie took on a whole new meaning for us. So I would say to anyone watching the film, do some homework on the Mansons and Tate before going in to see the movie.” Phil writes in “After having watched Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, i was able to finally enjoy the spoiler podcast for this movie. The movie premiered 3 weeks after the us release in Europe, where I live. I have to thank you for bringing up that the movie has structural problems in the case of viewers not being familiar with the Manson murders. As a non-US-viewer, I know that Charles Manson was a cult leader and murderer, but not much more. Only if you are interested in serial killers and American cults, you know details. I tried to stay away from spoilers too. This resulted in me not getting why we follow this young starlet, who actually never became relevant to the story, as she is not involved in the final showdown. Furthermore the intruder who was supposed to be Charles Manson didn't ring a bell, as i do not know how Charles Manson looked like when he was young. And there are Killers whose motivation I do not get alone by watching the movie, although it is instantly obvious that they are dangerous. So yeah, it is a possibility for the audience to not know the context and it results in a unsatisfying viewing experience. The movie seemed like shards connected through something I'm not familiar with. Best regards, Phil.” Other Articles Mentioned: All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today's show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. This week we dive into Neill Blomkamp's filmography as we watched Elysium and discuss the Elysium exoskeleton and the its possible real world applications, how the floating habitat and the Elysium space station is actually inspired from history along with simply reviewing the Elysium movie summary and the Elysium movie cast. So, get a big dose of radiation (don't really do that), fit yourself for a powered exoskeleton suit and journey to space in this sci-fi action romp! The Elysium Movie Cast and Director Matt Damon as Max - The role of Max was originally offered to two individuals from the world of music: South African rapper Watkin Tudor Jones (aka Ninja) who passed on the role and Eminem who also passed on the role after producers refused to have the production based in Detroit. The role then went to Damon who had the action chops from the Jason Bourne series to bring to this film. While we are interested to see what this film would look like with Eminem, at times Damon seems to be phoning it in along with most of the actors. Jodie Foster as Secretary Delacourt - Foster starts off as the main villain but her character could've used more development and screen time as her eventual death does nothing for the audience. We just grow to despise her and there's nothing sympathetic about her character as it seems like she was written solely for the audience to focus their hatred until Kruger takes over the black hat role. Sharlto Copley as Kruger - Copley is a frequent collaborator with Blomkamp having previously appeared in District 9 (which is in our list) but he's relegated to a henchman type role until he kills Delacourt. However, he definitely plays up the insanity of his character and it often overshadows the story and the other characters in his scenes. Alice Braga as Frey - Sean and Chris feel like Braga provides the only nuanced performance in the entire film as she's balancing her duties of being a mother and caring for her old friend, Max. She and Max have a past together, but not a ton of screen time is devoted to this and could've provided more context why they drifted apart prior to the events of Elysium. Director Neill Blomkamp - Prior to directing this film, he helmed the wildly successful District 9 which received acclaim for its story and visual effects and Blomkamp along with many of his collaborators returned for Elysium and this was not as well received as District 9. While Blomkamp is a good filmmaker and has great ideas to bring to the big screen, we feel like this was not his best effort so hopefully he can return to Hollywood soon and thrill audiences once again. Elysium Movie Summary Set in 2154, Earth has been ravaged by disease and famine. However, the wealthy have retreated to an Earth-orbiting space station called Elysium. Back on Earth though, a factory worker by the name of Max has been involved in a radiation-exposing accident. This leads him left with a deathly fate, unless he can make his way up to Elysium to use the wealthy's technology to cure himself. Along the way, he gets involved and in the way of Elysium's defense secretary's plan for a coup against the current president as she vows to use more power to protect Elysium from the rest of the Earth dwellers. In the end, he doesn't end up saving himself, but instead, saving humanity. Elysium Themes and Setting Elysium is set in 2154 as stated in the summary and let's just say the world has not improved in the future. The world's wealthiest individuals have left the Earth and built themselves a monstrous space station that is somehow visible from the surface. Crime rates seem to have spiked, there's global food shortages and overpopulation has afflicted many regions. Sean and Chris debated during the podcast episode whether this version of the future is a dystopian creative look from Blomkamp or if this was to serve as warning for what we can expect in the next 100 plus years? Granted,
