It's our last episode of the year! Pete and Martha dig into the most passionate of passion projects, the movies that almost-but-not-quite get made. Movies die in Hollywood all the time, but some are such powerful ideas that they leave an impression in our imaginations. And sometimes, decades later, they do get made! But should they? Let's find out... Homework for the episode: Jodorowsky's Dune (2013, dir. Frank Pavich), Lost in La Mancha (2002, dir. Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe), The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018, dir. Terry Gilliam)
Sam Clements is curating a fictional film festival. He'll accept almost anything, but the movie must not be longer than 90 minutes. This is the 90 Minutes Or Less Film Fest podcast. In episode 118 Sam is joined by artist and illustrator Murugiah. Murugiah has chosen Jodorowsky's Dune (90 mins). Directed by Frank Pavich, the 2013 documentary follows Alejandro Jodorowsky's attempt to make a film adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel Dune. Sam and Murugiah discuss how Jodorowsky gathered his 'spiritual warriors' to work on the project, how not making the movie became a huge influence on sci-fi cinema - from Ridley Scott's Alien to much much more - and how seeing Jodorowsky's El Topo changed Murugiah's life. Adaptations toujours, avec Pierre Salard, alias The Spaceshipper. "Alucarda" (1975) opens on a woman (Tina Romero) who has just given birth and knows she's not long for this world. She asks an old man who is with her to make sure her child, named Alucarda, goes to live in the local convent. The mother, presumably speaking of the devil, says, “Don't let him take her away.” After the old man leaves with the baby, the scene that transpires suggests that an evil force has come for the mother. Slithering, death rattle-like noises intensify and there are quick edits between close-ups of the mother's face and the faces of cobwebbed statues in the room. After the title cards, the film jumps forward 15 years. Alucarda (also played by Tina Romero) has been living at the convent. When Justine (Susana Kamini), another orphan around the same age, arrives, Alucarda bonds with her instantly. When the two stumble upon the place where Alucarda's mother died, they release a satanic force that possesses them and wreaks havoc upon the convent. The film, directed and co-written by Juan Lopez Moctezuma, has become a cult classic over the years, especially following the 2002 DVD release from media distributor Mondo Macabro. Underlying themes are breaking free from tradition (the Catholic Church, heteronormativity) by burning it all down in an attempt to embrace individuality (queer identity, atheism, feminism). Here are some things we mentioned during the episode and/or that we think you should check out: This piece on the history of nunsploitation films by James Newton Sheridan Le Fanu's "Carmilla" (1872), edited by Carmen Maria Machado (2019) This bizarre/incredible interview with Carmen Maria Machado A tiny bit of information on "Alucardos: Retrato de un vampiro" (2011), the fan-made documentary about Juan López Moctezuma (kinda) Here are some other films we mentioned during the episode: "The Devils" (Ken Russell, 1971) "The Exorcist" (William Friedkin, 1973) — Sound effects engineer, Gonzalo Gavira, worked on this film, along with "El Topo," and "Alucarda." "Fando y Lis" (1968), "El Topo" (1970), "The Holy Mountain" (1973), and "The Dance of Reality" (2013) — all by Alejandro Jodorowsky. You should probably also watch "Jodorowsky's Dune" (2013), Frank Pavich's documentary about this fucking weirdo and his quest to make the most absurd, impossible adaptation of "Dune" "Possession" (1981, Andrzej Żuławski) "Frankenstein" (1931, James Whale) "Child's Play" (1988, Tom Holland) "Scream" (1996, Wes Craven) "Black Narcissus" (1947, Powell and Pressburger) "The Mansion of Madness" (1973) and "Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary" (1974) are Moctezuma's other most popular films. The film that Jo mentioned where someone takes a two-minute shit onscreen is Wim Wenders' "Kings of the Road" (1976). For this episode number 44, I have documentary director Frank Pavich. Frank appeared along with Dan Lanigan and Soby on episode 39 in November 2021, in which we discussed the purchase of the Jodorowsky's Dune book. A story which has been picked up again by the press just in the past week or so. I may not have got the hits, but I got the scoop! The documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, which Frank Pavich directed has been favourite of mine since I was introduced to it by my friend 2015. I've watched in many times since, trying to find our everything I can on the subject. That quest still continues to this day. I love reading every tidbit about Jodorowsky's Dune. So as soon as episode 39 of the podcast was over, I knew I had to get Frank back on.. Over the past couple of months we've become friendly acquaintances. We chat quite a bit on whatsapp and share a similar enthusiasm for stories. So you're in for a fun episode here. You can buy Frank's doco here and the fantastic soundtrack here Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/jamiebenning)
In our penultimate episode of 2021, Dario speaks to Frank Pavich the director of Jodorowsky's Dune and NYHC. With all the publicity and discussion around Denis Villeneuve's blockbuster interpretation of Frank Herbert's influential Sci-Fi novel, it was fantastic to go back to the first, incredibly imaginative but ultimately failed attempt to bring the book to the screen from one of cinema's singular visionaries: Alejandro Jodorowsky. Frank talks about his first contact with Jodorowsky, his uncompromising attitude to the production scope and casting, and his assembling of a team of designers and artists including Kurt Geiger, whose drawings Pavich uses to great effect in the documentary and which would go on to define mainstream sci-fi for decades to come. Frank also talks about NYHC (New York Hardcore) his directorial debut, putting the making of the film into the context of his fascinating idiosyncratic film education, and how the film was made in that liminal period between the analog and digital eras of filmmaking. You can watch it online for free here. Also, Neil reviews serval blu-ray releases including Champion directed by Mark Robson and starring Kirk Douglas, Sergio Corbucci's The Great Silence (both from Masters of Cinema), Jean Pierre Melville's Enfant Terrible (BFI), Alistair Mcleland's music film on Saint Etienne, I've Been Trying to Tell You. ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. This is the second episode in a matter of two days. I only just released episode 38 with Howard Kazanjian yesterday. BUT I felt the need to get this episode and it's story out there because it's one that I've been chasing since 22nd Nov 2021.It started while I was at work at F1 talking with my friend Will Buxton. Will is a presenter and a big movie fan and we got talking about the imminent auction for the Jodorowsky's Dune pitch book. So if you don't know this story, I implore you to seek out the 2013 documentary “Jodorowsky's Dune” and watch it before you listen to this podcast. But if you want to go ahead now and listen I'll give you a quick summary. So back in the mid 1970's the Chilean-French director and performer Alejandro Jodorowsky became consumed with producing a film version of Frank Herbert's Dune. He managed to pool the resources of people like Dan O'Bannon, Moebius, Giger and Chris Foss. Much of the talent that went on to work on seminal sci-fi films and indeed inspire a whole generation of filmmakers. So Jodorowsky put together a pitch book. This thing is huge with thousands of illustrations, storyboards, costume designs, architectural designs by these artists with the intention of sending it around all the Hollywood studios to convince them to buy his idea for the movie and let him direct it. Ultimately this endevour failed but its influence still resonates strongly today. One of these hallowed Dune books sold for $42500 in 2019. And on the 22nd November this year another sold but this time it went for $3 Million dollars. All thanks to one man stepping in and buying it on behalf of a collective who at that point had managed to raise $750,000 dollars. (As of today that amount has topped $11M).That man's name is Soby. He was some what of a mystery to me for several days but I managed to connect with him over twitter (thanks to Will Buxton for the heads up) and we got chatting. He agreed to come on the podcast to talk through just what went down, and WHY!It then occurred to me that I should contact the director of the documentary Jodorwosky's Dune, a guy called Frank Pavich. Again after a quick search I made contact with Frank and he was also keen to join having seen the story in the press himself. I then wondered if I could get my friend Dan Lanigan, prop collector and co-creator of Disney+'s Prop Culture. Dan was also very keen and I knew he'd bring his unique perspective to the conversation. To my knowledge somewhat of an exclusive - this is the first podcast interview with Soby regarding the Dune book sale. And to have both Frank and Dan involved is such a treat.LinksWhat is a DAO - https://www.forbes.com/sites/cathyhackl/2021/06/01/what-are-daos-and-why-you-should-pay-attention/What is crypto currency - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Gu2QMTAkEUWhat is blockchain - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSo_EIwHSd4What is the Dunning Kruger effect - https://www.britannica.com/science/Dunning-Kruger-effectSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/jamiebenning)
The Ghost of Dune: Jodorowsky's Unmade Masterpiece On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ibrahim & I continue our look at Frank Herbert's Classic Sci-Fi Novel, Dune. There's no shortage of angles to come at this movie from. Last week we looked at Denis Villeneuve's new film playing in theaters and HBOMax right now. This week Mr. Chavez & I touch on David Lynch's failed early-80's effort with producer Dino De Laurentis. A disastrous production and final product that Lynch has disowned and has great difficulty discussing, for the longest time Dune seemed unfilmable. But the meat of today's episode lays with Frank Pavich's 2013 documentary, Jodorowsky's Dune - a documentary on the making of the most famous un-filmed project in Cinema History. Featuring interviews with directors Richard Stanley and Nicholas Winding Refn, special effects, production and artistic designers, and producers including: H.R. Giger, Michel Seydoux, Chris Foss, and Jean Giraud. This is a fascinating documentary on one of the greatest disappointments in Cinema. A Must-See for all fans of Cinema. Take a listen and enjoy. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

“You are about to enter a world where the unexpected, the unknown, and the unbelievable meet. A world where the mighty, the mad, and the magical will have their final battle. A world beyond your experience, beyond your imagination.” Those words, from the trailer to David Lynch’s 1984 feature adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, equally describe the conversation you are about to hear. Join the FC as we venture into the desert of Lynch’s compromised vision, worship at the holy mountain of Alan Splet’s sound design, and question whether the whole movie might just be a dream plucked from the world of Eraserhead. Along the way, we also confront the heretical visions of director Frank Pavich’s 2013 documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune, and debate a film adaptation’s responsibility to its source material. Not even The Lord of the Rings, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, or Denis Villeneuve's yet-to-be-released (at the time of this recording) Dune are spared. It’s psychomagic in space! Erratum: At the 17-minute mark, we misidentify the special-effects supervisor as Brad Dourif, who in fact appears onscreen as Piter De Vries. How could we make such an error? Because Brad Dourif is amazing, and we’re inclined to give him credit for everything that is right and good in this world.
"What a fool believes he sees, no wise man can reason away." This line from a Doobie Brothers song is probably one of the most profound in the history of rock-'n'-roll. It is profound for all the reasons (or unreasons) explored in this discussion, which lasers in on just one of the major trumps of the traditional tarot deck, that of the Fool. The Fool is integral to the world, yet stands outside it. The Fool is an idiot but also a sage. The Fool does not know; s/he intuits, improvises a path through the brambles of existence. We intend this episode on the Fool to be the first in an occasional series covering all twenty-two of the major trumps of the Tarot of Marseilles. Crédits musicaux : The Last Seven Minutes de Magma, issu de l'album Attahk (1978)
Today we discuss Jodorowsky's Dune a 2013 American-French documentary film directed by Frank Pavich. Our guest is comedian Michael D'Bey, who has also worked on film productions for Kink.com. The film explores cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky's unsuccessful attempt to adapt and film Frank Herbert's 1965 science fiction novel Dune in the mid-1970s. Part thoughtful tribute, part bittersweet reminder of a missed opportunity, Jodorowsky's Dune offers a fascinating look at a lost sci-fi legend. "Jodorowsky's Dune" is an account of a film that was never made despite all the love that its makers poured into it, yet somehow it's warm and inspirational: a call to arms for dreamers everywhere. (RogerEbert.com) We also talk about duck dicks, Jodorowsky's Dune as the Tupac of movies, Joe Morton, Meteor Man, Star Wars Force Awakens, and feeding Orson Welles. Michael D'Bey was Born in the Great State of Tennessee in the 7th month on a Sunday at Sunrise... At 7 he knighted himself in His Aunts backyard with his Uncles Straight razor it was pearl handled with Excalibur inscribed on it... At the behest of his principal He dropped outta High School in what should've been his Junior year and joined to Theatre companies and begin working as On-Air Producer at the local radio station, awhile attending various classes at 3 different colleges before getting his G.E.D. Moving to Hollywood And actually enrolling in the American Academy of Art. Where he met a Beautiful Woman, Had a A Gorgeous Baby... and was Cursed to start doing Stand-Up Comedy. **Sup Doc has created a Patreon page for those that can help out. Join us as we interview Frank Pavich, director of The N.Y.H.C. Documentary and Jodorowsky’s Dune!! Greetings and salutations faithful listeners, welcome to the latest and perhaps most charming episode, episode 46, of CINEPUNX! On this episode we were very lucky/honored/blessed even to sit down with director Frank Pavich. Do your remember, or have you seen, or have you heard the sound track for THE N.Y.H.C. DOCUMENTARY?? It is such a weird and awesome exploration of a moment in time, a scene in transition, and the ridiculous characters who populate that scene. The soundtrack was HUGE when I was about 16 and going to all the shows I could. It wasn’t until much later I got to actually see the film, and it even got some press at the time. A brief history of the show, for those of you who are new to it. Josh and I met through hardcore shows, but really bonded as friends and brothers going to film events. It did not take long for us to discover some shared passions in film, not the LEAST of which was the director Alejandro Jodorowsky. Jodorowsky directed films like El Topo, The Holy Mountain, and Santa Sangre. So when we first heard about the documentary exploring Jodorowsky’s failed efforts to make Dune we were beyond excited, and I THINK we first saw it together, though our collective memories are fuzzy on that point. Yet very few documentaries in recent years have inspired so much, and I even had a chance to review the film for Cinapse here. However, it was on an early episode of this very show I pointed out a significant discovery that I made, that the director of the visionary documentary, Frank Pavich, was also the director of the cult classic The NYHC Documentary. When we first discovered this, both Josh and I were floored because Pavich, from afar, seemed like our perfect guest, considering how his work combined our two interests so well. Who else had even done anything that spanned Jodorowsky and Hardcore? Nobody that we could think of. Flash forward to today, and low and behold Frank Pavich was not just an ideal guest in theory, but in reality as well. We had a GREAT conversation with him where he graciously indulged our questions about the making of these two very different films, as well as some fun personal stories and a few about friends! Frank was very generous with his time, and really informed us about so much. We loved having him on the show, and we really hope he will join us again soon!! We also cannot express ENOUGH how grateful we are to goo friend of the podcast Grace Kim. Grace is the coolest ever, she welcomed us into her Queens abode, made us coffee, and took us afterwards to get amazing food. She has been going to shows as long as we have, and if you don’t know here you are missing out. She is also an AMAZING tailor so keep that in mind if, you know, you need someone for your classy event or expensive movie. A few other notes. During the show Frank explains that we should use a famous quote from the NYHC doc, one in which Puerto Rican Mike explains his employment situation. The problem is, I could not find that clip. In fact, what is on the show is basically all I could find on youtube, and as I said, I do not own a dvd copy of the film. Then again, even if I did, I wouldn’t know how to rip the sound from it. Whatever. The films is hard to find though, so I can’t exactly post a link. You can still find JODOROWSKY’S DUNE and I highly recommend that you do. So, big thanks to Frank Pavich, Grace Kim, and those like Doug Tilley who told me just to ask whoever we want to be on the show and see what happens. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS EPISODE AS MUCH AS WE DID MAKING IT SUBSCRIBE, RATE, REVIEW PLZ The post CINEPUNX Episode 46: Frank Pavich ( THE N.Y.H.C. This hour, director Frank Pavich joins us to talk about his 2013 documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune. Alejandro Jodorowsky is an avant-garde filmmaker who planned to make a movie adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, Dune, in the early 1970s. He enlisted the likes of Orson Welles and Salvador Dalí to be in his movie, but…

We examine Alejandro Jodorowsky's landmark 1973 philosophical film, The Holy Mountain, about nine adepts searching for immortality, undertaking a sacred journey. Joining us is Stephen Scarlata, co-producer of the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune.
Frank produced and directed the documentary N.Y.H.C. about the NY hardcore scene of the mid 1990s. Frank also was involved in production for film and television projects including: Die, Mommie, Die!, Anton Chekhov's The Duel, and Scrappers. More recently, Frank directed and produced the documentary feature, Jodorowsky's Dune, which explores the genesis of one of cinema's greatest epics that never was: cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky's adaptation of Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic Dune, whose cast would have included such icons as Salvador Dali, Orson Welles and Mick Jagger.
Welcome back for another episode of the GGtMC!!! This week Will and Sammy bring you a special episode, we had the privilege of seeing Jodoworsky's Dune (2013) directed by Frank Pavich. We also had the opportunity to speak with one of the producers Stephen Scarlata, or as we know him in the community...Neck!!! We want to thanks him for thinking of us!!! Joining us for the 20th episode of the Hey You Geeks podcast is director Frank Pavich, here to discuss his incredible, hit documentary, Jodorowsky’s Dune. We discuss the film, the enigma of Jodorowsky, alternate timelines and so much more. Pavich shares fascinating stories about first meeting the legendary Jodorowsky, H.R. Giger and Michel Seydoux. From Jodorowsky’s Paris apartment and Giger’s museum to Cannes, Pavich takes us on a journey through the creation of the documentary, and what could have been if Jodorowsky’s visionary epic made it to the big screen. With names like David Carradine, Orson Welles, Dali, Pink Floyd and Mick Jagger attached to Jodorowsky’s adaptation of Dune, the doc is full of fascinating casting stories and a visual tour through a unique vision in film.
