The first day of spring training is traditionally a joyous time of renewal, but on Blue Jays Day 1, manager John Schneider opened with a trio of injury reports — OF Anthony Santander, RHP Shane Bieber and RHP Bowden Francis — plus a mutual mea culpa surrounding RHP Jose Berrios and his bail out during the World Series. Both sides now say the Berrios situation could have been handled better. Is all forgiven? Already, less than a week into camp, the Jays have made a trade to shore up the outfield for the loss of Santander. Griff and Mal discuss the role of OF Jesus Sanchez, acquired from the Astros for OF Joey Loperfido, returning to his original team. Is there a role for Berrios that would see him make 30+ starts for the Jays or, as the boys discuss, with the club's Top 10 depth of starters, is a trade more likely with three years left on his contract and an opt-out looming. With $20M remaining on his final season in Philly, what happened to prompt the release of volatile OF Nick Castellanos. And more. Award-winning journalist and member of the Hockey Hall-of-Fame, Michael Farber, guests on Conversations with Griff. A New Jersey native who paid to see Bruce Springsteen perform for $2.50 at Rutgers University, Farber moved from a Yankees beat in Newark to Montreal to join the Expos beat for The Gazette in 1979. He still lives with his wife Danielle in Montreal and offers up work for TSN television and TSN 690 radio, as well as hockey insights for NBC. Michael and Griff discuss the memorable Expos years from 1979-94, focusing on the special bond those teams had with the city in which they played. Farber recalls the details of his exclusive access and coverage of the Tim Raines drug rehab winter, at age 23, between 1982-83, and the Hall-of-Fame redemption song that followed. Within 24 hours on Thursday and Friday, the two top MLB free-agent hitters linked to the Blue Jays signed and came off the board, but neither one was headed north of the border. Was Bo to the Mets a panic move by owner Steve Cohen? Was Bo's departure always an inevitability? The Blue Jays head to the New Year having accomplished necessary improvements to the pitching staff, but still needing one big bat to solidify the lineup. Conversations With Griff Presents Ellis Valentine Griff welcomes former Expos outfielder Ellis Valentine, discussing his career as a blossoming young Montreal baseball star in the '70s, derailed in the early '80s by injury and immaturity, from what once was a Hall-of-Fame career path, to finding himself out of MLB prematurely due to injury and a self-destructive lifestyle. The L.A. native talks about his journey from high school star, to second round draft pick in 1972, mentored by Mel Didier and Karl Kuehl in the Expos organization. He talks about similarities with the Jays' homegrown duo of Vlad Jr. and Bo Bichette, as he was linked in his early career with Hall-of-Fame catcher Gary Carter, advancing to the majors year by year from the same draft class and with similar potential. Valentine's big personality shines through as he talks about what it was like being young and an Expo, surrounded by a roster of like-minded friends, winning games in 1979-80, all in their early 20's all single and coming into their own together, with a fanbase that had a chance to get to know them in downtown srettings after almost every game. Ellis offers an opinion on what has happened to the African-American presence in the majors, his dislike of Gene Mauch, how he lost his peripheral vision for three full years after being hit in the face by Roy Thomas of the Cardinals, his trade to the Mets in 1981, his retirement, realizing he needed help and facing the problems head-on. Exit Philosophy with Griff and Mal The MLB Hot Stove is heating up early with several significant trades and with important free agent tires being kicked in earnest. Griff and Mal discuss where the Blue Jays stand with regard to '26 team payroll and what it allows them to do in their attempt to repeat a trip to the World Series. What should be the key free agents they should pursue. Does that include a new closer too slot in ahead of Jeff Hoffman. What about their own free agent, Bo Bichette? Are they in danger of making the same mistake the Leafs did with Mitch Marner, letting him go and feeling they can replace him, no problem. On Exit Philosophy, Griff and Mal welcome former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons for his view on the just-completed World Series, his new gig as bench coach with the Angels, and more. The former skipper, who took his Jays to consecutive ALCS in 2015-16, explains the similarities of his first playoff team that lost to the Royals and the difficulties of repeating the next year. He explains the phenomenon of playing for an entire country and hosting Jays fans compared to others around baseball. He describes his favourite memories from Winter Tours, including driving tanks in Edmonton with his head sticking out the turret and the icicles that formed. Gibby shares his thoughts on clubhouse chemistry, winning, and how talent is the overriding factor. He talks about his first stint as Jays manager in New York when he was appointed while eating a post-game sandwich, his famous dustup with Ted Lilly, and his clubhouse clash with Shea Hillenbrand. It began with an upbeat media session starring Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins, describing the joyous October journey to World Series Game 7 and Shane Bieber's surprising decision to opt in for 2026. But the Jays task of defending the AL championship title does not get any easier, as Bo Bichette heads into his free agency, as Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt potentially leave the rotation and as Don Mattingly decides to step away from the dugout. What are the various scenarios for Bo moving forward? Will he stay or will he go? The epic Vlad October and its perception of his mega-extension are discussed as well as a potential spinoff, the possibility that the run to the Fall Classic has made it easier to recruit free agents in Asia, as well as North America. Was this the greatest World Series story ever told? How about the most memorable Game 7? The Blue Jays, in the end, had chances to hold on to or extend the lead, then, when the Dodgers tied it, chances to win in regulation and then tie it when falling behind in the 11th. The Dodgers' comeback in Games 6-7 came mainly due to the Japanese influence of Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto and superstar DH-RHP Shohei Ohtani, with rookie Roki Sasaki looming as yet another Rising Sun weapon. In this week's Exit Philosophy, as the Blue Jays head towards their first Fall Classic appearance in 32 years, Griff and Mal break down the team's League Championship Series win vs. the M's, from George Springer's historic three-run blast in Game 7, to Mad Max's aggressive meltdown getting in the face of manager John Schneider. And where was Seattle's dominant closer, Andres Munoz, to face the top of the Jays order with eight outs to go and the tying run on second, a series win for the taking? What about the highly regarded M's rotation when they were most needed. Moving on to the World Series, should Bo Bichette be activated for Joey Loperfido, even if he's only able to swing the bat once per game? Hey fans, Shohei Ohtani's flight has finally landed, unfortunately, it's still not to sign with the Jays. Is Trey Yesavage the man for Games 2-6 of the World Series vs. the Dodgers if the Jays expect to win. Is the Jays' bullpen still an Achilles Heel, and how does it match up against the Dodgers' disappointing group of relievers? Has Vlad done enough in this postseason to cement his legacy at 26 years old? Plus, a quick head-to-head comparison between the Jays and Dodgers. All this and more. The pure fun of playing a kid's game has returned to the Blue Jays dugout and clubhouse. Griff and Mal discuss the unique post-game speech from manager John Schneider after beating the evil empire Yankees and enjoy the ever-more-unique Vlad Guerrero Jr.'s performance with Big Papi, David Ortiz, playing off of broadcaster John Sterling's famous “Th-uhhhh Yankees Win.” In response, in unison, Papi and Vlad shouted an out of tune, “DAAA Yankees Lose, DAAA Yankees lose,” with Derek Jeter and A-Rod on the panel trying to smile and play along. Moving on, can the Jays repeat the three-starter, 10- reliever approach to roster building for the next round and does it make a difference as to who their opponent might be, Tigers or M's? Manager Schneider has often lover the course of 162 games, laid out a road-to-victory plan for the bullpen, but never has it come together as flawlessly as in the clinching ALDS Game 4. Beyond Vlad outplaying Aaron Judge as series MVP, what other Jays stood out and what does this team have to do with their roster to win the next series and advance to their first World Series since 1993. To kick off Wicked Wednesday Urban Legends series, we're throwing it back to our coverage of the Texarkana Moonlight Murders. This horrific, unsolved case is the inspiration for the infamous legend of The Hookman. Come back next week to hear all about it!Between February and May 1946, three people were brutally attacked and five were murdered in Texarkana by a man dubbed the Phantom Killer. Texarkana straddles Texas and Arkansas and had a population of about 27,000 at the time of the murders. The murders have never been solved, though many believe to know who's responsible for the crimes. James “Jimmy” Hollis and Mary Jeanne Larey were attacked in February 1946 but luckily survived. Richard Griffin and Polly Ann Moore were not so lucky when they were killed just three weeks later in March. Paul Martin and Betty Jo Booker were the second double murder three weeks later in April. Virgil Starks was killed and his wife Katie was shot twice at the beginning of May 1946. Then the attacks ended as quickly as they began. On this special solo edition of Exit Philosophy, the Blue Jays simply did what they had to do to win the AL East, knowing the powerful Yankees were likely to run the table against the O's and the White Sox. The team concept of this group of Jays has likely made them the first No. 1 AL seed in years that other wouldn't mind facing in a 5 or 7-game series. Griff breaks down payrolls of the 12 postseason qualifiers … and that doesn't include the free-spending Mets. The playoff-bound Blue Jays were once riding high atop the AL East, but a punchless 10-day spiral, a combination of frustration, panic, tough calls and poor internal decisions, now sees them tied with the confident Yankees heading to the Final Four games. Decisions like Berrios to the bullpen, Bieber pushed back a day, Bassitt to the IL, Manoah cut loose after 14 months of intense rehab from elbow surgery, multiple ejections, gloomy dugout views, umpire blaming and more. The final out of the Wednesday game seemed typical, with Alejandro Kirk thrown out at first base from right field on a 104.1 mph one-hopper to Wilyer Abreu. Griff and Mal talk strange roster decisions, disappearing offence, the new ABS Challenge System for 2026, tributes to Kershaw (Dodgers) and Arenado (Cardinals), historic collapses and more. Richard Griffin was Queen Elizabeth II’s personal police officer for fourteen years. Accompanying her on a picnic in the hills near Balmoral Castle one day, they met two American hikers. “Have you ever met the Queen?” they asked, not recognizing the monarch in plain dress. “I haven’t,” the Queen quipped, “but Richard here meets her regularly!” Thrilled to meet someone close to royalty, the hikers then handed the Queen their camera, posed with Richard, and asked her to take a photo! It isn’t the first time someone has been in the presence of an important person unawares. “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it,” Jacob said after encountering God in a dream at Bethel (Genesis 28:16). And when Philip asked Jesus to show the disciples the Father, Jesus replied, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Like the hikers, the disciples had been ready to hand Jesus the camera, not recognizing He was the One to zoom in on (vv. 10-11). Like the Queen that day, Jesus hasn’t always been recognized for who He really is. Beyond a “wise teacher” or “great moral leader,” He’s God in the flesh and King of the world (1:14; 18:36). What a revelation it is when we discover it!
The new hate-on between Blue Jays and Yankees fans began with a catty observation by YES broadcaster Michael Kay and intensified lately with a calculated response from Buck Martinez questioning the Bronx Bombers. The MLB most recent ranking of the Top 20 starting pitchers in the game does not include any Blue Jays, even though Toronto's rotation, as a group, remains highly regarded. The Blue Jays are the Beasts of the East, the hunted not the hunters in this race to the title in what has traditionally been the toughest division in baseball. How did they get there and what about the Yankees and Red Sox. Did Bo Bichette win the bet on himself when he didn't sign any of the deals that have been offered by the Jays over the past several years and what kind of total value, or AAV could he expect? Does Bo know shortstop or could he do a Marcus Semien? The Yankees seem like a good fit as a new home for the Jays shortstop this coming offseason. How would Bo look in pinstripes? Griff and Mal discuss the well-documented clubhouse confrontation between Phillies star Bryce Harper and MLB Commissioner. Was there a message to his madness and how big an influence was his super-agent Scott Boras? What about when RH Shane Bieber is ready to start in the majors again coming off Tommy John. It's a great problem to have, deciding whether to go with a six man rotation for the final seven trips through the rotation or the traditional five. LH Eric Lauer has been the most consistent starter but he could be the odd-man out. Are the Blue Jays getting the proper respect from national media and their own fan-base? Why not? Ross Atkins deserves some credit for filling the need for two more hard throwing bullpen arms and a clear roll of the dice with Bieber. Should he have done more at the deadline? The Toronto Blue Jays have not lived up to expectations. The “movie” promised to fans by their players has been a dud, and the patience upper management has benefited from is running out. With a farm system full of question marks and a front office with years of experience but not much to show for it, the Toronto Blue Jays are in a hole that might take years to get out of. Richard Griffin joins Bob and John for the first half of the show to talk about the team and theorize about what will happen to them going forward. From one disappointing team to another, Bob and John try to look on the bright side by bringing George Ofman on the show as the pair get to hear firsthand about a team worse than the Jays: the Chicago White Sox. With the team on track to have the worst record in MLB history, George talks to Bob and John about where it has all gone wrong for this storied franchise, dedicating the day to some of MLB's worst.
With the MLB Playoffs out of the question for the Toronto Blue Jays, what should they do now? Richard Griffin joins Bob and Richard Deitsch to try to answer that question as they wrap up the week with some Jays talk. Rich, Richard, and Bob pull no punches today as they take a deep dive into what Toronto needs to do to improve for next year. They examine the security of jobs in the front office, if any, before shifting their focus to the team's roster. With the trade deadline fast approaching, should the Blue Jays make a move now or wait until the off-season?
