Many of us think of spending as something you just... do. You make money, and spend it. But in fact, spending isn't something that just happens. It's a skill. It's a practice that you can refine over time and use as a tool to make your life as beauitful and valuable as it can be. One of the most important components of learning the skill of spending is aligning your spending with your values and highest priorities - something refered to as values based spending. It's entirely possible to be financially responsible, hit all your financial goals, and to buy what you love without going broke.   On this week's episode of The Money Love Podcast I'm talking with my friend and the Co-Host of The Frugal Friends podcast, Jen Smith. Jen and I discuss why it's imperitive to think of spending as a skill, why frugality isn't something to resist but rather embrace, how our desires and problems are manufactured by modern day marketing, and why quality over quantity with your spending is the secret to financial success. One of the questions we get asked most often is for guidance on what someone should and should not spend money on. The answer is always... it depends. What's important to me, may not be important to you. Jen Smith is here to give everyone the framework to make those tough decisions. This framework is called Value Based spending. Jen lays it all out in her new book, "Buy What You Love Without Going Broke". Long-term listeners may remember Jen from episode 58, "Frugality without Deprivation," in 2019. She's also still rocking things over at the Frugal Friends Podcast. In today's episode as we discuss the book you'll find answers to the following: Why is it so hard to stop spending money? What is values-based spending and how is it different? What's the problem with telling someone a budget will solve their spending problem? What's the point of learning values-based spending when the bigger issue is that we don't earn enough money? And so much more. If you enjoyed this episode, please share it with a friend! Jen Smith is a personal finance expert and the co-host of the top-rated Frugal Friends Podcast. After she graduated from college, she and her husband buckled down and paid off $78,000 of debt in just two years.  They also made extreme lifestyle shifts that she doesn't recommend anymore. Because she was miserable.  She knew she had to find a middle ground between spending frivolously and spending nothing. For the last five years, the “Frugal Friends” podcast has become a journey to find how to get the things you love without going broke.  She's on a mission to help people spend in alignment with their values, empowering them to live for today while saving for tomorrow. Because we will say, we love intentional spending, so why don't we just talk about that and forget the word frugality? It's archaic, it's got bad vibes, we really want to reclaim this word, because frugality is about so much more than intentional spending. We can't be intentional 100% of the time. Sometimes your mind just takes over and you're working off habit, working mindlessly, so we want to work with our minds to create habits that conserve resources, so not just money, but conserve time, physical space, mental energy, all of that stuff. We believe frugality is the conservation or the good stewardship of all these resources, and we can, yes, be intentional to conserve them, but we can also create psychological barriers and aids, shortcuts that help us do it even when we're not being ‘intentional.'”“A hundred years ago, frugality was seen as this somebody who is creative, who is resilient, who can reuse and repurpose things. When you were frugal, you were seen as a really intelligent person who really valued quality and keeping their things well functioning. So, it was this lauded quality about you. And over the last hundred years, marketers have made us believe that we are consumers first and people second. So, to be a person of worth, you must be a consumer, you're not of worth simply because you are a person. And so that is the reason why we want to bring frugality back.”

How would the rest of 2023 feel if you prioritized sleep this summer? How would you feel if you prioritized moving your body? What would shift in your life if your family took on a lot more responsibilities around the house? What would you do with your free time? Something to think about, right? I ask myself these kinds of questions all the time. My belief is the deeper my self-knowledge, the deeper the life. One of my areas of interest is personal finance. People, especially women, tell themselves stories about money and many of our money issues can be traced back to childhood. This week on the podcast, I am talking to Jill Sirianni, co-host of the Frugal Friends podcast. In our chat Jill and I talked about how she went from being in debt to now working in personal finance. Jen Smith and Jill Sirianni, co-hosts of The Frugal Friends Podcast, are joining me today to talk about debt and why frugality is considered the bad F-word in finance. Jen and Jill are no strangers to debt since they've paid off a combined total of nearly $140k with their husbands. They approached their debt differently than some of the typical financial advice you'll hear the "gurus" sharing, which proved to them that personal finance solutions are not always one size fits all. Jen's journey even inspired her to write The No-Spend Challenge Guide, a best-seller on Amazon. They now host Frugal Friends Podcast to help people overcome their impulse spending and transform the habits that cause them to overspend to live a better, more financially free life. In this episode, Jen and Jill share their debt journeys and the shame and guilt that comes with paying them off. We also talk about how habit-forming and learned behaviours from childhood play a big role in your finances. Lastly, Jen and Jill share why FOMO and social media can be a leading cause for overspending and how to counteract the need to spend by figuring out your "Why" for your money. I think, especially with the background I have, the clients that I care for something like breathing, and grounding techniques, something that can be implemented wherever we are. We don't have to have special tools or a tool belt to be able to implement an effective coping strategy and breathing we carry with us everywhere we go. And so whether it's a stressful situation or a financial decision I'm making in the store, when I need to be present in the moment, I ground myself. My guest this week is Jen Smith, a personal finance expert and author of the Amazon best-selling book The No-Spend Challenge Guide. Jen and her husband paid off $78,000 of debt in less than two years making well under 6-figures. She talks about it on her blog, Modern Frugality, and as the co-host of the Frugal Friends Podcast. 3:07 – Jen 101 Jen's podcast teaches people how to spend. She believes people can live a life they love with the money they already have. 9:48 – Money mindsets We think that money is just numbers on a screen when you check your account balance or dollars in a wallet, but it's only a means to get the things you want. Money touches everything in your life that you care about. 19:30 – Pivotal moments There are pivotal moments in your life where you can choose to be challenged, but it will provide a lot of growth. 21:58 – Dealing with debt Paying off debt is like going on a diet. You try to go extreme and lose it fast, and then a week in you aren't doing it anymore. The radical middle is making small changes with large impact. 32:41 – Less friction The less friction and barriers there are to paying for something, the more people pay, on average, according to studies. 39:53 – Post debt hangover After paying off debt, it can be hard to get over the shame of how you previously spent money. You can always choose a different path. 51:17 – Get to know you Her splurge item? CrossFit Something we'd never guess about her? She doesn't like celery. FEATURED QUOTES When I was able to identify what a money mindset really is, I was able to start identifying what I thought about money. We think that money is just numbers on a screen when you check your account balance or dollars in a wallet, but it's only a means to get the things you want. Money touches everything in your life that you care about. https://www.modernfrugality.com/author/jensmith/page/5/ https://www.frugalfriendspodcast.com/about/ Thank you to our partners of the show!
