When fires erupted in Los Angeles in early January, the incidents seemed to shift from wildfire to urban conflagration in an instant. Orange County Fire Authority Fire Chief Brian Fennessy, who grew up in Altadena, hurried back to his home community as it was being run over by the Eaton Fire. What Fennessy witnessed was mind-blowing – only a few homes in a massive area spared from the fires. Fennessy shares his experience during the firestorm, including his use of milk and beer to address one hazardous condition; his reflections on the state of wildfire, WUI and urban conflagration training; his perspective on resource ordering systems that can delay critical apparatus getting on the road; and information about the California Fire Service Leadership Alliance. Next: Watch Chief Fennessy on “60 Minutes.” This episode of the Better Every Shift Podcast is sponsored by MagneGrip. Mutual aid – fairly common in the fire service, right? Sure, there can be “stumbling blocks” in setting these arrangements up, such as personnel, different equipment, availability and even what might be seen as “silly” issues, like egos and a competition mindset. Lest we forget that our oath is succinct…”To protect the lives and property of our community. “ There is no mention of egos or equipment matches, etc., in the Oath, just “to protect!” No departments exemplify this truth as do the Orange County Fire Authority, Los Angeles County Fire & Rescue and Ventura County Fire Department. For years and years, we have watched local and national news of major wildfires in Southern California. And for years, each of these counties basically cared for their counties with help from CAL FIRE and some mutual aid. However, that all changed in 2021 when the idea of a unified approach with a Quick Response Force took hold in these three counties. The goal was to not only attack these fires as early as possible, but to also have some of the best possible equipment available and…to be able to continue the fight into the night, when fixed-winger aerial aircraft could not fly. With the assistance of world-renowned of Coulson Aviation of Vancouver, BC in Canada, the counties leased refitted former military CH-47 Chinook helicopters into masterful firefighting weapons. Each helicopter can drop up to 3,000 gallons of retardant or water in one drop. Using IR goggles, they can fly in the dark of night and hit their marks. This is a game changer. Tune in to learn how and why this came about and what it takes to make it work. And though your department may not be able to grab a Chinook helo, you might learn how your department can enhance your mutual aid pacts and why it is imperative to have them today! As the holidays are here! Please help us to help our Brothers and Sisters in dire need! Over 90% of our disbursed funds have been donated to families of firefighters who have made the Ultimate Sacrifice. Chief Brian Fennessy of the Orange County Fire Authority joins us to talk about leading and innovating in the face of history, tradition and bureaucracy. Brian began his career in 1978 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management, working as a hotshot crewmember, hotshot/helishot/helitack captain and, ultimately, crew superintendent. In 1990, Fennessy joined the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) and, ultimately, became chief of the department in 2015. While he was with the SDFD, he developed and established a fire/rescue/EMS helicopter program. He became fire chief of the Orange County, CA, Fire Authority in 2018. Under his visionary guidance, OCFA's Quick Reaction Force (QRF) — a groundbreaking public-private partnership with Southern California Edison — has revolutionized wildfire response. The QRF fleet, including CH-47 helitankers and intelligence helicopters, made over 2,200 drops, preventing new wildfires from exceeding 10 acres, 95 percent of the time. As fire chief Fennessy oversees 78 stations serving nearly 2 million residents in 23 municipalities and unincorporated area. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) awarded Chief Fennessy the 2023 IAFC Fire Chief of the Year, noting that “Chief Fennessy's remarkable contributions to the fire service have earned him the IAFC Chief of the Year recognition, a testament to his enduring commitment and dedication to making a lasting impact on the fire service community.”

Don't get the wrong idea here. “Rules are important,” says Orange County (California) Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy; however, firefighters need to be trusted to make smart decisions when things go awry in the world of chaos around us – and this trust is best achieved through an intent-driven culture where members understand the organizational mission. Plus, we dig into all this: Learn: The OCFA Doctrine shaping the future of the department Action: The power of a station visit, particularly for new members Laugh: Firefighters' keen abilities to sniff out a fraud High note: IAFC's Career Fire Chief of the Year Award honor Power quote: “Legacy? Can tech companies send data about European Union citizens across the Atlantic? According to a new framework, the answer is yes. Recently, the EU formally adopted a new agreement with the U.S. on data privacy that gives companies the green light to send data back and forth. For years, EU privacy advocates have raised alarms that U.S. intel agencies like the NSA are spying on EU citizens, particularly by tapping the data droves of Big Tech companies like Google and Meta. This framework is the third attempt at a data-sharing framework after past attempts were struck down by a European court after the Edward Snowden revelations revealed U.S. spying practices. Will the third time be the charm?Evan is joined by Caitlin Fennessy, Vice President and Chief Knowledge Officer at the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Prior to joining the IAPP, Caitlin was the Privacy Shield Director at the U.S. International Trade Administration, where she spent ten years working on international privacy and cross-border data flow policy issues. We have a truly incredible guest in this week's episode. We don't think we've ever met someone with so much drive and conviction as serial entrepreneur, Sue Fennessy. Sue's vision for her latest, purpose-led-business ‘WeAre8' is absolutely epic. So large is the vision, that she's spent the past 8 years building the technology platform required to take on the social media giants of the world. Yes, this one woman ‘tour de force' is taking on the goliaths of social media with a determination to make social media better for all. She's also invested more than $11 million of her own money to get WeAre8 to where it is today. She's been able to do this because of her phenomenal track record building and exiting businesses. To date, she's scaled and sold three previous businesses. The last business that Sue co-founded and then sold in 2022, the global Standard Media Index, was bought for $200million. SMI, as it's also known, was a pioneering data and technology business recording global media spends across different advertising channels. It required years of persistence and serious influence skills to get all the world's largest media agencies on board to have access to all that data. Sue has these in spades! These days, after numerous years living in New York, Sue is based in London where we visited her at her HQ in central London. In this epic conversation you'll learn : How Sue thinks about her Purpose in lifeHow she plans to transform the worlds of social media AND digital advertisingThe high personal cost of Sue's single minded focus on making WeAre8 a success; and The crazy and sexist things Venture Capitalists have said to her.In short, this is a truly memorable conversation so please enjoy this episode with the purposeful and driven, Sue Fennessy. Often when we think of cinema, the first places that come to mind are New York or Los Angeles. But did you know that hundreds of films and television shows are set in cities around the Pacific Northwest? From popular series like Twin Peaks to blockbuster book adaptations like Twilight, culture writer David Schmader's new book Filmlandia!: A Movie Lovers Guide to the Films and Television of Seattle, Portland, and the Great Northwest highlights more than 200 film and television entertainments created and centered in our region. Extensively researched and curated by Schmader, Filmlandia! explores the oft-overlooked film culture of The Pacific Northwest. The author shows a culture that is thriving and robust, one that is finally given space to be celebrated in a guide that aims to be visually arresting and compelling – much like the films themselves. Classics like Sleepless in Seattle are discussed, but so are little-known documentaries, including multiple about Nirvana legend Kurt Cobain. Schmader put in a lot of screen time and research for this release, resulting result is over 200 TV and film entries that feature synopses (with healthy doses of levity and insight), behind-the-scene facts and trivia, and regional scenic highlights. Sidebars showcase the television shows that shaped the public's perception of the region (such as Twin Peaks, Shrill, and Portlandia), filmmakers like Gus Van Sant and Lynn Shelton, queer cinema, silent films, and more. This is a talk for any cinephile or anyone with a curiosity about a lesser-known aspect of Pacific Northwest culture! David Schmader is a writer and performer devoted to exploring his obsessions, from homophobic rock stars and pray-away-the-gay Christians to trash cinema and legalized drugs. His solo plays have been performed in theaters across the US. From 1998–2015, Schmader was staff writer and editor for Seattle's Pulitzer-winning newsweekly The Stranger, where he wrote the issue-opening column “Last Days: The Week in Review.” He is the world's foremost authority on the glorious terribleness of the movie Showgirls, hosting annotated screenings of Paul Verhoeven's notorious stripper drama at cinemas all over North America and providing the commentary track for the Showgirls DVD. He is the author of Filmlandia: A Movie Lover's Guide to the Films and Television of Seattle, Portland, and The Great Northwest and Weed: The User's Guide, published by Sasquatch Books. Kathy Fennessy is a Seattle Film Critics Society board member, an approved critic for Rotten Tomatoes, and a regular contributor to Rock and Roll Globe, Seattle Film Blog, and Video Librarian. She has also written or spoken about film for Amazon, KEXP's Sound and Vision, KUOW's All Things Considered, Minneapolis's City Pages, the Northwest Film Forum, the Seattle International Film Festival, and The Stranger. She was born in Connecticut, raised in Alaska, and works in development at Cascade Public Media/KCTS 9. She is a Whitman College graduate and has lived in the Pacific Northwest for 35 years. For most, living in a world where social media is only a positive and empowering place is nothing but a dream. In this empowering and emotional episode, Sue talks to Holly about the current value exchange of digital advertising. She also explains the power of the female founder, and how WeAre8 aims to contribute towards solving the global economic crisis by reconnecting millions of brands and people — whilst saving our young from the bleak reality of social media as we know it today. This week on The New P&L we speak to the phenomenal Sue Fennessy, serial tech entrepreneur and Founder and CEO of WeAre8, The People's Platform. Anyone living in the UK will have no doubt seen WeAre8's nationwide advertising campaign featuring the voice of England football legend, Rio Ferdinand. WeAre8's ambition is to play a role in redirecting some of the billions of ad dollars going to social platforms back to people and the planet, delivering transformational results for advertisers in the process. Sue is a serial entrepreneur and is also founder, largest shareholder, and former CEO of the world's leading media data aggregation business, Standard Media Index, which works with some of the world's leading media and finance companies including Comcast, NBC, Disney, Warner Media, FOX, Discovery, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and more. With a unique view of the $450B digital advertising market, Sue became obsessed with the lack of effectiveness, transparency and waste in major digital platforms and the damaging effect this was having on content creators, people and the planet. For the last six years, through WeAre8, Sue has been focused on building the antidote to this broken system to create a platform where people are loved, valued and rewarded all while uniting to help save the planet in just two minutes a day. We discuss with Sue: · The foundational values that underpin WeAre8 · What led to the launch of the social platform · WeAre8's engagement and revenue model · What the industry's response has been to WeAre8's disruptive approach · What will drive real change in the social media space · Why the impetus to change needs to come from the VCs and investors not just the platforms · What its ‘platform free from hate' slogan means in practise · How the management of user data has been reshaped on WeAre8 · What lies behind WeAre8's successful commercial engagement model · What continues to inspire Sue after 30 years in entrepreneurship To learn more, go to: www.weare8.com Download the WeAre8 app at the Apple Store App Store or Google Play Store If you'd like to join The New P&L movement for more principled leadership and more purpose-led business and keep up to date with all our latest news, go to www.principlesandleadership.com and subscribe. WeAre8 is a new sustainable social platform that promises to curtail hate. It also wants to offer ‘green' advertising solutions, reward users for watching ads, and empower creators who share positive content. But do we need another platform? Here to tell us what made brands like Heineken, Nike, BT, and lots more, partner with the new platform, is Sue Fennessy, founder and CEO. Expect to learn how it's defining hate speech vs free speech, how their ad model differentiates itself, and what a platform looks like when it's not designed to keep you there. Ep. 16 features Carys Fennessy who is a sophomore in high school and just won her second straight girls individual high school championship (while hitting all 18 greens in the final round! What??!!). We talk about that win (and others) and we discuss a scary injury she suffered while attending the US Open this past June at The Country Club. We also discuss her plans post high school and what's in the bag. I hope you enjoy the conversation and thank you for sharing this with your friends. Sue Fennessy is a serial technology entrepreneur, innovator, creator, thought-leader and disruptor. She's also cheeky, funny, curious and like me, periodically inappropriate. Which, of course, I celebrate. This was a fun chat with a passionate woman, who's determined to bring some light, laughter and positivity into what-can-be the messy, negative, polarising and hateful landscape of social media. Sue is all about creating a safe, supportive and empowering online space for people to be inspired, informed and educated and she's on a f*cking mission! That space is called WeAre8. Among other things, we chat about wanting to rescue a sloth (her first big project as a kid), how social media algorithms work, seeking approval from people who don't care about us, being addicted to drama, being an entrepreneur (it chooses us), under-estimating our own power and potential, imposter syndrome, falling apart on the floor of the shower, online nasty-ness and lots more. Enjoy. weare8.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 25 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Mark Fennessy. Mark is an entrepreneur, television and film producer. I’ve worked with Mark on a few occasions and he’s become somewhat of a mentor and actually a mate. Had I known the full extent of his achievements, I actually would have been a little intimidated to do this interview, he’s a giant in the world of media, broadcasting and production. Mark started out in 1981 as an Assistant Cameraman in the news department of network 7 in Melbourne, rose quickly through the ranks to become a highly respected producer with Seven and Nine, with dozens of major credits including 4 Olympic Games broadcasts. At 26 Mark Headed up MTV Australia, eventually joining the team at MTV International when it was a global phenomenon. Mark returned to Australia to create Crackerjack with his brother Carl. As a little independent production company, they made a big name for themselves as producers of comedy and trail blazed the new world of unscripted television. Among the slate were Backberner, Comedy Inc, Chaser Non Stop News Network, Jamie’s Kitchen Australia, and the legendary Enough Rope with Andrew Denton. Crackerjack was sold to Fremantle Media in 2003, with Mark taking the reins as CEO and his brother Carl COO. They quickly built a slate of 19 different productions including the very new Australian Idol, Australia’s Got Talent, Newstopia, The Farmer Wants a Wife, The Apprentice, Project Runway, Choir of Hard Knocks, The Biggest Loser and MasterChef. In 2010 Mark & Carl left Fremantle to head up the local affiliate of the Shine Group launched by Elisabeth Murdoch. What followed was a blitzkrieg of TV content with an extraordinary slate tv franchises and super brands including Beauty & The Geek, The Bachelor, Shark Tank and The Voice. During this same period they launched highly successful Dramas including INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, Catching Milat and Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door . Within just 3 years Shine was the No. 1 production company the Southern hemisphere. Following a global merger, Mark and Carl Fennessy agreed to oversee a new company Endemol Shine Australia. What followed is another incredible output of content and hits including: Lambs of God, Mystify, Australian Survivor, Offspring, The Beautiful Lie, Wake in Fright, Gogglebox, Australian Ninja Warrior, Married At First Sight, Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, Blue Murder - Killer Cop. In 2017 Mark was awarded an Order of Australia, recognising him for his significant service to the broadcast industry. He was recently ranked No 1 in the Australian Financial Review’s Cultural List. The brothers Fennessy recently departed Shine after almost 11 years and whilst the world waits to see what these industry trailblazers might do next, Mark is overseeing the highly anticipated scripted series Last King of The X. He also runs a small independent record label in keeping with his passionate and longstanding relationship with the music business. Mark has a relentlessly creative mind, always ticking over with new ideas and possibilities. Combine that with his fierce work ethic and ability to articulate his vision, well, it’s kind of epic! He is a very private family man and this is a rare opportunity to see what makes a man like this tick.
