Gwenda, short for Gwendoline, convinced her father to let her go into the circus as long as she got an official job or "booking." She did not want to get a traditional job such as working in the postal service, as her father had dreamed she'd do.Gwenda and her mother were very very close but unfortunately her mother died way too early. In spite of her parents, Gwenda became a Catholic. She fell in love with Stephen's father who was Italian and catholic.Well he had already abandoned the Catholic church by the time they met, but she was certain she could convince this enthusiastic atheist to come back to the church.  And she was a success on both fronts. Stephen did not enjoy his experience being raised in the Catholic church and schools. As a young boy Stephen struggles with anxiety, stealing from local vendors, fights and more. Gwenda was a storyteller and that's one of manny gifts she gave to Stephen. Years later when Stephen was teaching Mindfulness lessons she came to some of his teachings.Stephen left home in order to find himself. This journey had experiences of exploring Catholicism, Marxism, drugs, Buddhism, Mindfulness, compassion and more.Years later while raising her children, Gwenda used the expression "never mind"  when Stephen would come to her hurt or upset. She was say "never mind" and offer a smile and have them move on. Stephen was looking for more than that from his mother. My guest trained as a Buddhist Monk in the Tibetan tradition for eight years. To this day he still uses and teaches his practice and he enjoys applying his practice to real life situations and can help others without them knowing it's a Buddhist technique.  I was looking for something but more importantly I was leaving behind stuff, everything," Stephen explains. Stephen asked his mother years later, why she hadn't protected him more from his father when he was younger . "She was angry at me for asking that, she was angry at herself. She thought she'd done what she could. She was protecting herself as well."After reading Stephan's first draft of his book, "The Novice, Why I Became a Buddhist Monk", Gwenda said  "Don't you think it would have been nice if we'd listened to you a little more when you were young?" Stephen got very emotional. Their relationship changed so much for the better after that. She was acknowledging that they could have done more. That was what I wanted to hear.Gwenda had a big heart. Bio:Stephen has a fascinating story that could offer a unique perspective. His journey, shaped by both his mother and his unconventional upbringing, has deeply influenced his life and work. Growing up in a challenging environment, Stephen learned lessons from his family and from overcoming obstacles, which he now shares through his coaching and mindfulness framework. His story isn't just about overcoming adversity but also about the lessons learned along the way, including how his relationship with his family, especially his mother, shaped his journey to becoming a Buddhist monk and later a TEDx speaker.I believe his experiences of both struggling with and learning from his upbringing would provide a heartfelt and insightful conversation for your listeners, touching on themes of resilience, personal growth, and how those early life lessons shaped the person he is today.BOOKS:The Novice-Why I Became a Buddhist Monk, Why I Quit & What I Learned By Stephen SchettiniIt Begins Silence-the art of mindful reflection-Al Practical Guide to Meditation based on the teachings of theHistorical Buddha By Stephen Schettini Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/the.innermonk/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/stephen.schettini.3/LinkedIn:www.linkedin.com/in/schettiniYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@theinnermonkX: Stephen SchettiniWEBSITE: THEINNERMONK.COM (https://schettini.com/) "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Timestamps 00:45 Gwenda has been president for 12 years and she's also an umpire and masters rower. 02:30 Master rowing in Belgium isn't a big sport. There are 28 rowing clubs in the country - only a few have masters. Gent has hosted regattas regularly in April and May for many years. There has been a lack of entries recently. Until 2 years ago when changes happened. 04:45 The Federation added masters rowing to the national championships three years ago. They worked hard to ensure that there were enough entries. IN September 2023 there were a huge growth with 9 eights racing masters. The April regatta will now have a small boats champs (1x and 2-) and in September for big boats (4x, 4- and 8 as well as a mixed 8). 06:40 There is now a Belgian National Title on offer and Gwenda believes this has accelerated the change and growth in competitors. The standard is high. Gwenda thinks the changes weren't big but had a large impact. She hopes to have a separate masters championships. 08:50 New innovations - they are waiting to see how the event evolves and may have a masters only event with international participants as well from local countries.

Hey! Welcome to our series of podcasts and posts all about showing vs. telling, which we are on fire about right now, right Shaun? Growls. You can check out the rest of the series on Carrie's Substack Write Better Now or just the podcast episodes on her blog, https://carriejonesbooks.blog/ So, a lot of my writers have a brain like mine, which is sad for them. Just kidding! Just kidding! A lot of them do better when they see an explanation of show vs tell rather than just having their editor or writing coach shout, “SHOW DO NOT TELL!” So, here's a paragraph that maybe could be tweaked for a little too much telling. Once they reached Gwenda the Gerbil's cage, Ham-Ham shoved himself inside before swiftly closing the trap door, notching it. He took a second to breathe while Gwenda stepped onto the hamster wheel. She sighed, and suddenly he felt her staring at him. This is what happens when you immerse yourself in the scene a bit more. Ham-Ham scurried into the cage, Gwenda following. This was bad. “Latch the door!” she demanded, hopping to the wheel. “I'm trying!” It clicked and his breath whooshed out, smelling of stolen dog food. “They'll never know,” Gwenda whispered, “come run up here with me before the human comes.” “You have kibble on your fur.” “Oh,” she said, “I do. You want to lick it off?” Not only is it less telling, but it's in scene and we have a lot more context than just getting somewhere, closing a door, sighing, breathing and staring, right? One reads like blah. One reads like you're in the moment (even though it's in the past tense). One is flatter. One is more dimensional. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Look, you want to live your life in the moment, not have those moments told to you or via other people's/dogs/hamsters moments. WRITING EXERCISE This is from WillowWrites: "Write a scene where two people are arguing. Show the anger and frustration without using the words angry or frustrated." Susan, your host, welcomes Gwenda Lambert to today's episode. Long before becoming an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist, Gwenda was drawn to helping people navigate loss. She had experienced 17 deaths by the time she was 21 as well as being the daughter of a Gerontology nurse.   Her greatest loss came in 2012, a loss of health. She experienced a Post Traumatic Stress diagnosis that completely sidelined her. She was unable to focus or hold a thought. She was unable to sleep or actually even feel safe enough to leave her home most days. Even in all the chaos, she knew she had to find out what was going on. Basically, all those traumas and emotional losses including deaths and loss of trust that were locked in a room burst out. While she is well versed in the death and dying part, grief and embracing all those messy emotions still needed work. She had tried many different modalities from Yoga and somatic work to talk therapy yet it wasn't until she found the Grief Recovery Method, a simple, yet not easy, four-step process that allows you to get a lay of the land of your own emotional landscape, that she was able to embrace her incomplete relationships and trauma that held her back in ways she wasn't aware of. Now she wants to share that emotional freedom with you.   Key Takeaways: Anger, loneliness, and confusion are all part of grief too. Gwenda talks about the brain after experiencing trauma. Grief not only comes from death. Laughing and crying are both expressions; if you are not comfortable around tears you need to ask yourself what is wrong with you with this emotion. Gwenda explains how she ended up with post-traumatic stress disorder. Everyone grieves differently. Self-care is never selfish. It is hard to be supportive sometimes, we need to learn how to support people. Allow yourself to feel how you feel because if you don't, it will come out in an unexpected way. Grieving is not necessarily being strong but it is courageous and brave to do what you can each day. If you got through the first year after losing someone and you are still standing, prize yourself, it is not easy to grieve. Practice self-attention, pay attention to yourself, and learn to treat yourself with compassion and respect.   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com   Meet Gwenda Lambert Learn more about Gwenda Email Gwenda at gwenda@lifestartsnow.com

That evening, Gwenda smashed Michelle's face with a kitchen draw and stabbed her over 30 times. She then wrapped her body in rubbish bags and buried her off State Highway 38. Michelle's unidentifiable body was found 15 days later, and on day 35, Gwenda pled guilty to Michelle's murder. She stated she had killed her as she thought Michelle had stolen $20 from her wallet. "Human memory is a marvelous but fallacious instrument. The memories which lie within us are not carved in stone; not only do they tend to become erased as the years go by, but often they change, or even increase by incorporating extraneous features". Your Hidden Mind is an innovative online system of short prose ("RAPs") which enables you to uncover and rewrite your past conditioning so you get to enjoy a better life. In this episode, we are joined by the creators of the system, Christine and Brian Phillips. You'll surely be impressed by how they come up with the system and how it is fast and effectively works.   Don't miss:  ●     When you open all doors unexpectedly, unconsciously your brain automatically makes adjustments ●     We're all driven by our memories held in our subconscious ●     The unexpected triggers your subconscious ●     What is memory reconsolidation? ●     We have approximately 50,000 moments a day that our brains recording ●     We are just a machine making our own cells day in day out ●     Our fears keeps on repeating so often that it ends up impacting us rather than our age ●     Anything that traumatized you on a cellular level will have an impact on your body About Christine & Brian Phillips: The Your Hidden Mind system was created by Christine, Brian and Gwenda Phillips based on their wealth of life experiences and observation of human behaviour from over 40 years in education, fitness, health, leadership and the military around the world, in helping people find what really drives them, and equally, their potential. It was these broad and varied life experiences across so many cultures that has enabled them to help so many people to learn to observe their own behaviour and find out what really drives them. Most importantly, this is what has enabled them to develop this system of effortless self-insight and to write the massive amount of self-reflective articles to trigger unconscious drivers and in the process allow the mind to get closure. Brian and Christine's ability to look behind people's words and actions to help us all better understand ‘people' and Gwenda research and study of the neuroscience of memory reconsolidation, is what has brought this unique system to us today. This is an entirely unique approach to whole health and is an experience, not an explanation.
