Inspiration is a word that comes up a lot when speaking with Cleo McLaren. Not only is she an inspiring human being, a practising lawyer, certified coach and podcaster, but she is also role model to single Mum’s everywhere. Cleo takes her own inspiration from her mother, who raised her on her own and gave her strength. Cleo also cites her primary school teacher who gave her confidence at an early age. “She chose me to be Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz” and it started there! There is a realness to Cleo that is palpable through the way she talks and it carries over into her work; “My coaching is not just a bag load of mantras to repeat 10 times a day until you believe it, because life isn’t that simple”. She coaches from the heart and encourages clients to dig deeper. "Blips happen in life. We all experience hurt and joy. I want them to be able to bounce back, because there is always a way forward.” Her new podcast; 'Conversations With Cleo' is part-inspired by her brother whose achievements, despite an ongoing battle with cancer, have motivated Cleo to get his story out there NOW, rather than later. Cleo talks openly about her own health battles and how she has completely reframed her approach to fitness in a way that is calmer and now prioritises her own emotional well being. “My purpose is to share the love and light that I have with as many people as I can so, they may be uplifted and elevated in their lives. For more on how Cleo lives this purpose, tune into this warm, emotional and yet gritty and real episode as we cover coaching, family, the law and life/work balance. Carolyn Ball is in a hurry. She’s in a hurry to help save the world for her children and future generations. She is acutely aware of the seismic task ahead of her and is smart and humble enough to know that she cannot do it alone. Always passionate and talented, Carolyn finally found a creative outlet for her dream and Save The World At Lunch was born. She is the first to admit it’s a personal passion project; “I am documenting something, rather than creating business”, she says humbly. It’s a project though with which she is determined to make an impact. A mini-movie series is about to launch; one for adults called and one for children, with a first trail coming in December 2020 called ‘An (In) Edible Inheritance'. The project centres around the importance of people making food and drink choices that serve the wider world and everyone in it. One aim is simply to inspire other families to also do things differently, which otherwise might not have and to see the results of that. Small steps lead to giant leaps. Carolyn sees much of the inertia that paralyses people due to the enormity of the challenge and is attempting to present something very accessible and simple, starting with her own family, that we can all apply in our own lives. Carolyn has always loved the food and drink hospitality sector and still passionately works the day job for Restaurant Associates. She also needed a creative outlet though, to express herself through and an idea was born. Listen in to this warm and wonderful podcast and you won’t help but be infected by Carolyn’s warmth, enthusiasm and passion for her subject, as we talk sustainability, food and drink, ice baths and roller skates! “It’s taken me some serious ups and downs to work out what my purpose in life is; to give people the permission to live their life with real clarity of who they uniquely are”. So says, Author, Publisher, Mentor & Personal Brand Strategist, Jo Baldwin-Trott. In this inspiring and deeply reflective podcast, Jo openly shares the sadness and challenges of her personal story, and how she has come from a dark place of despair to a place of triumph and meaning in her life and work. We go deep into identity, confidence, vulnerability, equality, mental health and the difference between the sexes in how these issues are addressed, or not in some cases. Not afraid to skirt the big questions, Jo gives some great positive examples of those who are getting it right and others who are not. The world needs more honesty according to Jo and she sees many positives in a post-Covid world. “It’s very exciting time for equality. Everyone (on zoom) is the same size. It doesn’t matter how tall you or small you are, or what car you drive or how big your house is. And I love that about these times.” I only started publishing in lockdown. I’ve got a lot to say and so have many of my friends. The books I publish are for the greater good, for the social consciousness. Jo’s latest book ‘Being Fine: The Other F Word’ is out in December. We discuss the positives and negative of the art of persuasion and how it can be used for both good and bad. When it comes to leadership, John is very clear that public speaking and communication skills are a pre-requisite of being a leader, and not a ’soft skill’, as they are so often deemed. “I work with a lot of people who have been in business for years but never received any formal leadership or communication skills training. They are just expected to know it.” We cover a range of topics including female empowerment, the impact of Covid 19, vulnerability, self care and John’s own podcast; Speaking Of Influence. John explains something called ’Spiral Dynamics’; “The idea is that we have to pass through different values levels as part of our personal and societal evolution. Happiness at work, life/work balance (in that order), loving work and helping organisations to help themselves - these are some of things that Michelle and ‘her crew’ are fighting for. Pirate analogies aside, Michelle speaks with a candour and an honesty about herself that is refreshing many will resonate with. Inspired by the book; Be More Pirate by Sam Connie Allende; “I loved every word”, Michelle not only adopted its principle but tracked down the author “I dragged him up to my house in Newcastle” she smiles and received his blessing to start putting his principles into practice. After moving to Silicon Valley in the late 90’s and working as a futurist and forecaster for several venerable think tanks, Alex has managed to create a 2nd co-career as a writer. The author of 3 books; The Distraction Addiction, Rest and the latest; Shorter. Shorter deals with how organisations and companies can re-design their workdays to allow more rest into the lives of their people without reducing productivity. As founder of Strategy & Rest, Alex has always been interested in creativity and how people gain insights and new ideas. He is keen to illuminate the role that downtime, leisure time can play in this. He examines activities that 'don’t look like work’ and are ’seemingly unimportant' and seeks to prove this is not true! Creating space for rest, for hobbies, for “deep play” can foster the creative process. "We need to pay attention to this stuff”, he asserts. Alex cites the proven and documented stories of Darwin, Beethoven and Ernest Hemingway and the role downtime played in their creative genius. The latest book also deals with busy professionals who are in 24/7, "always on” industries and how reducing their ‘work’ hours can actually improve productivity. In this fascinating and insightful and up to date episode, we cover the effects of Covid-19, 4 Day Weeks and technology. Alex further cites William Gibson; “The future is here, it’s just not evenly distributed yet” and adds; "The 4 Day Week is already here. It’s just buried under a pile of rubble of outdated thinking. By day Ellie Steele is a Marketing Manager for the beautiful Georgian House Hotel in London’s Pimlico. By night she dons her cape and is Food & Lifestyle Blogger; “Just for fun”, she says. Ellie has always had a strong emotional connection with food. Ellie was influenced by her environment growing up; “I was raised on home grown organic ingredients and my mother was always hosting and cooking for friends”. In a world where we are bombarded by health information, fake images and fad diets, Ellie brings a breath of fresh air, common sense and responsibility via her Instagram Blog; “ellies_eats16” ; "My want is to find the correct balance between the enjoyment of food and understanding what I am putting into my body and the impact of that”. Ellie talks openly and honestly about the time it took to adjust to life in London and then the early realisation that despite having a great time, the almost mandatory after work partying and socialising wasn’t actually making her happy. Preparing and sharing healthy food choices became part of the small things each day that improved her mental and emotional wellbeing as well as her physical wellbeing. She expands on the concept of mindful eating and is full of praise for her employer; she learnt about mindful eating via the ‘Wellness Wednesdays’ that are an important part of her company’s culture. Whether she knows it or not, Ellie is a great role model for young women who love food and want to enjoy it, whilst making healthy choices and understanding why they eat. There are three things that Simone cannot live without; one is speaking, one is basketball and one is playing the digeridoo. These days a successful entrepreneur, podcaster, three- time author and motivational speaker, his business - GTEX - turns experts into authorities by providing a framework business model to enable passionate entrepreneurs and solo-preneurs to get their voices heard and make income as well as impact. It was not always thus. “I am a very driven person. I am all in or nothing.” Simone explains the pivotal moments in his life and how they shaped him and still do. After his parents split at 14, Simone was determined to take responsibility for himself and help provide for his mother. An all-in detour via hospitality saw him go from waiter to managing a Michelin starred restaurant aged 19. A self-initiated stint living out of a backpack and effectively being homeless for two years led to an activist phase, helping to set up Occupy London, outside the London Stock Exchange. Today he is paid up part of the capitalism that he used to rebel against. “It’s an interesting paradox that there I was shouting “screw capitalism!” and now here I am running three businesses” he laughs. Whilst creating change and making an impact has always been a core theme, Simone has changed his approach; “I was living in a world of conspiracy theories. Activism is about destroying and I realised I prefer to impact through creating something positive, something new.” Simone's passion is infectious as he invites us all focus on the positive and explains how what you focus on expands. Steve also describes the book as a way by-pass potential trouble and assumed truths through this relationship with your future self. In this fascinating interview, Steve explains in simple everyday language some of the reasons why people get stuck in life. “People get stuck in thought loops. However, endless restructures, moving goal posts and ever more bureaucracy, again left Pam feeling unfulfilled. That’s when Pam discovered the power of coaching and she’s never looked back. As a client, I can vouch for this! We cover Coaching, Mentoring, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Tapping (EFT) and other modalities - all of which Pam has in her locker. Pam is a master at eliciting people’s real values (not their aspirational ones!) and at helping people overcome limiting and negative beliefs that might have been holding them back. “We get in life what we deserve we believe, not what we want” she says profoundly. "Coaching is for people who are ready OR are interested in finding out if they’re ready to become the person they need to be to achieve what it is they want”. “75% of people are motivated by what they don’t want,” she adds. Now a two time author and social entrepreneur, James puts an enormous amount of time and energy into helping others, who have also suffered similar disfigurements. “It took me 5 years to adjust to a new reality. (The accident) completely changed my life. I was a Guernsey dairy farmer when the first book came out. Social entrepreneurship didn’t really exist back then" James describes his latest book; Face It, as ‘part memoir, part self help manual, part manifesto for change’. James cause is not helped by how Hollywood often portrays people with facial imperfections as unfriendly villains (think James Bond), as well as some of the myths surrounding plastic surgery. In this incredibly honest and vulnerable podcast, we cover the stigma and prejudices of growing up with facial imperfections, and also James’s own self-imposed prejudices and limiting beliefs about what was attainable from life. James set up the charity, Changing Faces in the early nineties, to help others deal with the psycho-social challenges of navigating life with a facial imperfection. “Face-ism,” as James calls it is also dealt with in the 2nd part of James’s latest book. “People need help to deal with themselves, and to deal with the rest of the world.” This podcast is a profound invitation to learn, to liberate oneself of and adopt facial equality. It is off the pitch however, where Adam has had to fight probably his toughest battle. That is working with dyslexia. After challenges at school, a professional football career meant that dyslexia was not much of an issue but now with a career in the media and public speaking engagements and interviews, it has reared its head again and Adam outlines some of the obstacles he has had to overcome in order to get where he is today. “I practice talking to myself every day and especially before a (commentary) game." At the time of recording, this podcast interview is only the 2nd time that Adam has talked about his dyslexia in public and by doing so draws awareness to this much overlooked and underestimated disorder. "Even my employer has no idea of the challenges I have before each game”. Adam reflects on his time at schoolchildren are more protected these days but back then I was bullied and ridiculed a lot. I wanted to learn and paid attention in class but my dyslexia prevented me from translating my learning to the exam. I was always at the bottom. Yet at sport, I was an A star pupil". At such a young age, Adam couldn’t understand why kids who weren’t good at sport were not ridiculed yet if you struggled academically, you were.” These days Adam goes the extra mile when researching and making notes for his commentary on games. “Because I want to and because I have to,” says Adam. “Football is a spontaneous game. I always have to be prepared for the unexpected”. The last thing Adam wants is sympathy and worries that the school model has not advanced much over the last century in terms of how information is delivered and that the experience if you’re dyslexic is much the same today as it’s always been. Adam is as compelling to listen to as he was to watch as player and I have now forgiven him for scoring all those goals against my own team back in the day! "It’s about having a two way conversation with the energy, a deeper way of listening and communicating, it’s powerful. Delilah reveals how her past work was human led, whereas now it’s the bigger picture in nature. "It was sparked by the trees. The trees are in crisis. We risk reaching a tipping point where we lose all the trees because they’re all interconnected. So the fires on the other side of the planet will affect the trees in our back garden. They’re all one and they’re all linked.” Delilah believes it’s possible to reverse this by helping trees to grow and heal and appreciating them more. "Rather than planting 100,000 trees, it’s about getting 100,000 people to appreciate and wish to plant just one tree” she offers. Delilah emphasises that it's the energy behind something that is most important. It’s the intention which carries everything; "It’s how we approach the world and ourselves and how we communicate and our intention behind it” Delilah talks about creating a heart centred life and doing whatever you have to do to keep your heart open, as a way to shape your life; "Any answer that comes from the head is not the truth. It’s useful and needs to be incorporated, not dismissed but my work is encouraging us to become more heart-centered, more grounded. That’s a very different experience of the same reality” Delilah encourages and invites us to create our actions from within, to be in the body rather than the head, to feel and go with our instincts. The key, he says is asking better questions of ourselves. Tim had his own moment of enlightenment whilst on the beach - "All the stuff that had happened to me… the good & the bad… the experiences and knowledge… were irrelevant. I needed to try to put it into a still, heat it up and distill it into one drop of wisdom. Tim reveals the one common denominator that links all of the people that inspire him the most; “The number one with all of them is passion. It’s an attitude… we can learn to be productive and be happy or we can give up. Passion always wins." Tap into Tim’s own passion and amazingness by listening to this podcast! Part creator, part connector, part coach and now podcaster, Rachel is above all else wonderfully human. In this wide ranging and open podcast, we cover women, spirituality, vulnerability and purpose. Rachel has recently launched the 40 For Tea Podcast where she shares other people’s stories and experiences of what it’s like to be human. “There are 7 billion unique perspectives in the world. What if we can hold multiple perspectives by listening to other peoples. Get curious. Talk to strangers,” encourages Rachel. Rachel’s ability to search deep inside herself and share vulnerabilities make her insights and wisdom really authentic and well worth listening to. There are no angles or sides. She speaks simple truths that allow for a deep sharing of knowledge and experience as she encourages us all to own our own experience of life as well as our emotional response to it. She reveals how the dancing is her meditation. How it came from a low place and became something joyful; “ Dancing is connecting to my own truth. It’s a moment in time that I’m not thinking about the external world.” Many of us catch ourselves in victim mode, saying things like “I have to do this”. “No you don’t”, says Rachel. Choosing our mindset. Choosing to enjoy an experience rather than be a victim of circumstance are central to her message. “ When do we ever get the chance to really question who we are in the world?” , she muses. Jill reveals her personal journey, trying to balance work life with home life; .”I represent millions of people…but specifically women and mums who wake up everyday and struggle with the challenges, the conflict and guilt. I want to work, I want to have a career and have something for myself…but I want to be an amazing mother.” Jill has decided, it’s no longer a balance for her, it’s a work-life blend.”I try hard now to be present wherever I am. It’s not about making money. It’s about being great wherever you are.” We talk about the universal challenge of sharing feedback with others, not just in business, but in all areas of life. “My key to success in business has been sharing with people in a truly honest, compassionate, caring and brave way” Jill laments the fact that in our world of work, we’ve come to believe that feedback has to come with a cello, a curtain, a big audience, a form, a lawyer. “No! The right thing to do is to give very specific feedback It’s more simplistic and less of big deal”. We take in the effects of Covid-19 in America as well as the UK, and I particularly love Jill’s take on having People Director’s on company boards; “Any company that wants to be successful has to have a people strategist on their board. The only companies that shouldn’t are the ones without people”. Tune in for more gems like this! Smash The Box is a personal development business. Doug Gordon used to be a stressed out investment banker. That was until a near death experience changed his life and set him on a new path. Strong white lights, a strange biblical inscription appearing on his leg, a powerful energy and a strong message set Doug on a path of enlightenment. It’s been a deeply spiritual path that has taken him via several religions; “religions are like rivers - it doesn’t matter which one you go down as long as you get to the sea. Each river is beautiful in its own way.” He tried the Alpha Course before settling on his own path. These days he is a successful executive coach, speaker and host of his own radio show; Inspirational People/Inspirational Stories on 103.2 Dublin City FM (I was actually a guest on his show in September 2019 and it is great to be able to return the compliment!). Energy and intention are central to Doug’s work and teachings. “Energy” he says "is all around us, within us and it affects us". If you can get yourself into a high vibration state then you will perform so much better because you will attract high vibration people”. Much of Doug's work is with Sales Teams. He stresses that the intention for sales people should be all about creating a positive communication, a positive connection and a long term relationship. Not to make a quick sale. "When I visit CEOs, a lot of them do visualisation and meditation. They are actually quite spiritual, because they need to optimise their energy to optimise their performance. The women’s team currently punches above its weight in FA Women’s Championship - the 2nd tier of the Women’s National League. They play their home matches at the amazingly named Dripping Pan, where the directors boxes are actually beach huts. On another level, Lewes are the first ever football club to pay and treat male and female footballers equally. Maggie’s business card actually says ‘Equality FC’ and that’s what they are. With a background in human rights and a passion for football, Maggie (and the club) are driven by strong values and purpose; "Everything we do is driven to create a better society. We believe in the power of football for good and we believe that football can create inclusive, diverse, happy sustainable societies. Therefore it’s easy for us to turn down sponsorship from a gambling company because we don’t believe that has a positive impact on society”. I used to have a lot of questions; Why was I always fighting for little scraps of money? Why did we only get a little tiny mention in the paper when we won the National Cup? Why did our kit not fit? All these questions hit me at the same time as the corruption scandal was coming out of Fifa. It was huge moment for me - 'That’s why I was struggling’, I thought”. James Routledge started a business at university and had been it for 4 years but he made more impact in one blog post than anything he had ever done before. At the tender age of 21, he wasn’t used to talking about his feelings. “I didn’t really have a relationship with my mental health". The post not only went bananas and had a positive impact on people, it also felt invigorating. James describes it as the best day of life. “I felt accepted.., heard…,seen”. It was the start of a culture that James has created, via his business, Sanctus, that gives permission around mental health. The aim - to put a mental health gym on the high street. “Physical health is a hobby for people so why can’t mental be? We want to position a space, more like a gym. It’s not a therapy room, or counselling. It’s coaching applied to a broader range of mental health. The world needs a mental health brand”. James calls for more regulation of the coaching industry and talks about the challenges the industry faces. Despite the success of Sanctus to date, James says that his mental health can suffer still and talks with an honesty that is raw and refreshing when it comes to his own struggles. Failure, self-deprecation, panic attacks, anxiety - it’s all in here and addressed in a very upfront and real way. James says that Sanctus is all about connection and community. n 2018, CEO & Author, Andrew Barnes boarded a plane from his home in New Zealand, armed with just a laptop, some papers and a copy of The Economist. He was the most dangerous man on the plane yet, when he arrived at his final destination of London, he was not arrested and walked effortlessly through security. He had fired an email to his HR Director (who promptly deleted it, thinking it was a joke!) and what happened next transformed his working life, transformed his business (Perpetual Guardian), the lives of his employees and is now starting to change the world of work. “You only get one chance to change the world and this is mine” he smiles. Already being talked about and adopted by businesses in 83 countries (the Russian government have added it to their policy manifesto), it will be interesting to see, post Covid-19, how many more businesses adopt his 100-80-100 model, as we move into a brave new world. Inspired and shocked by an article in The Economist that revealed that the average worker in the UK is only productive for 3 hours a day. It’s 2.5 in Canada, Andrew decided to immediately put this to the test his own business, starting with his own board. "Just because someone shows up and sits in an office from 9-5, actually they’re not necessarily delivering you anything in return. Commute, coffee, emails, surfing the internet… and then you get down to work…and then someone taps you on the shoulder”. On average you get disturbed once every 11 minutes and it take you 22 minutes to get back to full productivity. Andrew explains 100-80-100. “We will pay you 100% of your salary of 80% of the time spent at work, on the condition that we still get 100% of the output”. Sound crazy? Think again. Despite the mischievous, attention grabbing title of his new book; “The 4 Day Week”, this is not really about three day weekends or improving culture and balance for people - albeit these are amazing outcomes. This is about improved productivity and a happier workforce. In Andrew’s company’s case, productivity went up 25%, revenues went up and profits went up and staff retention went through the roof. The first objection Andrew often gets is “but that won’t work in my industry because…”. Andrew has an answer for you. By taking blame out of the equation, he and the team were able to learn lessons in a productive way and communicate in a more constructive way. “I had to create from nothing this team culture…way of working…ethos…that was going to keep everyone safe. As well as diet, Aneela emphasises the importance of who you surround yourself with. "I have power words. I call myself a “mental lifter” because feedback affects my lifting. Donald Sloan believes in the power of food and drink as cultural entities. As Chair & Founder of The Oxford Cultural Collective (OCC), Donald sees food and drink as being at the heart of who we are as people, how we think about ourselves, how others perceive us. “They are a sense of pride, identification”, he suggests. Donald feels that in the UK we have become distant from food. He talks passionately about the role of food in community, “Any community that is connected to where their food comes from, to the traditions surrounding the food will have a sense of connection with it and that will unavoidably strengthen that community”. He has created his own vibrant community (OCC) in which everyone can flourish, feel a sense of belonging to and connection with. OCC is something that people can input to and draw energy from. Formerly Head of The Oxford School of Hospitality Management at Oxford Brookes University, Donald became interested in organisational structures and consciously creating a positive environment where people can become the best version of themselves. Always using food and drink and hospitality education to positively impact individual lives and communities, there are plans for an academy to include gastronomy and food writing masterclasses. “Food is a particularly powerful emotional connector to where you and others before you came from, and a way to let others understand you”, Donald enthuses. "Food should be enjoyable and pleasurable”. Just like this podcast! Bon Appetit!

The founder of Lifeforce World, Daniella is also the author of a new book called ’Through The Eyes of a Wounded Soul - 10 Steps To A Stress-Free Life’. Daniella describes powerful ups and downs during her upbringing which led to her taking the role of protector. Always very in tune with other people’s pain, Daniella found an incredible urge to liberate them from it; “I started putting my hand on people’s shoulders from about the age of 14. I could touch somebody’s shoulder and feel what they were feeling”. In order to discover who we really are, Daniella believes we need to go through uncomfortable pain. That this pain is powerful, that it can be an ally and be used to help others in deep ways. This is all despite our natural instinct to try and escape it, push it away and bury it. Daniella talks about the importance of processing emotional experiences properly to avoid resulting physical pain, illness and mental imbalance, if we don't. She sees stress as a sign that something needs your attention and how perception is projection. She says that people are thinking too much and are forgetting how to feel. “The only way to relieve stress is to work on an inward level” reveals Daniella as she encourages us to take more control of our lives and become the ‘driver of the vehicle’. “Pain is a power. If you drive it the right way, you will massively change your life”. Daniella is a true force for life and this podcast might just change the way you see yours. Troy Townsend has always lived and breathed football. Today he is notable for being Head of Development for Kick It Out, a high profile not for profit organisation with the sole aim to kick racism and discrimination out of football. He is also Sports Columnist for The Voice newspaper and MD of his very own Towno10 Productions. His professional football journey started when he joined Millwall, followed by Crystal Palace. Being released twice at an early age however, had a lasting and damaging impact on Troy’s mental health. After being put on a pedestal by his peers early in life, he spent a number of years not knowing where he was going in life. He started to mix with the wrong crowd; “I didn’t like myself as a person” and a first seminal moment involving a fight and a firearm spurred him to change path. “I realised if I wasn’t going to change then things were not going to pan out the way I wanted.” He went back into football as a coach and found a new calling - to support & help people who, like himself, had a vision & a belief but who struggled in terms of family background. He helped shape a football academy and became a father figure to many young aspiring footballers. Success followed with several non-league teams, including a memorable FA Cup run. Football also brought tragedy however, when Troy lost his 18 year old son Kurtis in a car crash. This interview is the first time Troy has spoken publicly in an interview about this and unbelievably, neither Troy nor the interviewer knew of one another’s tragedy prior to this interview. Witness this raw emotional moment shared live on air. A dark period followed and rebuilding his life afresh, troy found purpose in challenging all aspects of discrimination in and around the game he loves so much. We tackle the big issues head on, including events surrounding the England national team’s recent match in Bulgaria, Rainbow Laces and a father’s natural pride in watching his son Andros Townsend play for Crystal Palace & England. “The Kick It Out generation is born from young voices.
