Vincent Kompany is one of European football's most exciting young managers – so exciting, he got handed the keys to German giants Bayern Munich, the season after relegating Burnley from the Premier League to the Championship. It's a strange trajectory, and at the time, his appointment in Munich raised more than a few eyebrows. How had Kompany gone from relegation to one Europe's biggest, most historic clubs? Was it because he was a student of Pep Guardiola, the ex-Bayern boss? Was he somehow failing upwards? This episode of Football Daily is hosted by documentary maker for Copa90, Eli Mengem. Eli heads off on a journey to understand how Kompany has had such a remarkable rise in football management by analysing his youth, playing career and early steps in management, speaking to his ex-team mate Kyle Walker, ex-manager Hugo Broos and others along the way. It maps Kompany's rise, but also asks bigger questions too. We'll speak to journalist at the Athletic Seb Stafford-Bloor about whether Kompany's appointment is a harbinger for a new style of manager coming to the fore in Europe? And we'll ask Troy Townsend, the ex-head of the UK's anti-racism in football charity Kick It Out, about how Kompany's experience as one of the very few black managers in Europe has affected his rise.As Kompany thrives in the Bundesliga in his first season, this episode of Football Daily arrives at the perfect time to dispel some of the myths around him, while examining his personality off the pitch, to create a portrait of what is one of the most fascinating personalities and footballing stories in the modern game.

“As soon as the Southport murders happened, the way Muslims specifically were targeted has made you question again whether we do belong, whether deep down in the end, we're always having to justify our existence,” says Azeem Rafiq, the former professional cricketer on today's podcast. “On an individual level. I'm not sleeping, I'm patrolling around the house, covering letterboxes up, that sort of thing is what all of us have been doing, getting in touch with each other, making sure if you do have to go out, that people know where you are and you're on a very, very high alert.”Today's conversation is about the impact and implications of the racist rioting that followed the devastating and tragic murder of three children in Southport on July 29th.Azeem Rafiq has written a book, called “It's Not Banter, It's Racism: What Cricket's Dirty Secret Reveals About Our Society, records his experiences confronting institutional racism while a player at Yorkshire County Cricket Cub.He is joined by Sanjay Bhandari MBE, who was appointed chair of Kick It Out the anti racism charity in 2019, from where he lobbies government and sports governing bodies for greater black and Asian representation across every level of football, and helped construct legislation for the new Online Safety Act, which was passed earlier this year. We talk about the role of Twitter and it's owner Elon Musk, the role of sports governing bodies and their sponsors, and we ask, for all the talk of it's power to influence societal change, does sport really matter?Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. Naomi and Alex talk about the Far Right riots up and down the UK, the extent to which they are an omen of worse things to come, or the final spasm of a faction of sore losers, the role disinformation has played, and what Starmer can do. Alex: “The far right have had a pretty bad year. The European election did not go their way in the mega-wave they thought, Modi lost his majority in India, Le Pen came third in France, Starmer won a landslide here, and now it looks as if Trump might even be in danger. It's not a good moment for them and something about this feels like their final tantrum by the checkout.” Naomi: “The far right are always with us. They never go away. It is a fact of life. They have peaks in their activity and while this has been nowhere near as bad as it could be, you have to have constant and ever vigilance around those that seek to divide us.” Please take a minute to subscribe to the podcast, like, review and rate us, and share Quiet Riot pearls on social media because sharing is good, is it not? For as long as Chris Paouros can remember, she's been a proud supporter of Tottenham Hotspur. But while she's always loved her football team, she's not always been sure that football has loved her back – which is why she's spent years trying to transform the game into somewhere that everyone feels welcome. Her CV is formidable enough – a vice-chair and trustee at Kick It Out, a Board Member at the Football Supporters' Association, a Supporters Representative on the FA Council, and the co-chair and co-founder of Proud Lilywhites, to name just a few. She's also a brilliant talker and a fantastic guest to have with us on the podcast, as we talk about her love of football and her desire to change it for the better in whatever way she can. There's so much in this conversation with Chris – where that love of Spurs comes from, her drive to open the game up to everyone, some of her proudest achievements with Proud Lilywhites, where the game goes next, even some cheeky film recommendations as well – and it's a cracker with one of our favourites on the pod. The Beautiful Game. The World's Game. Football, or Soccer to us North American types has not only been a vehicle of entertainment, but has often been a vessel for advocacy, activism, protest and progress. From anti-racist and anti-fascist efforts born of the 1980s and 1990s to the more recent struggle between democratization and unfettered monetization of the sport, the pitch has often been political. In 2010, Football v. Homophobia was started in response to the sporting culture that was seen as unwelcoming, especially in the sports ancestral home, Britain. The effort, much like the Kick It Out anti racism movement a generation before spread across world. In 2019, a effort along this same line was started, Football v. Transphobia. The goal is to make a dent in growing transphobia within the UK, that was showing up on the street as well as the stadium terraces. At person has the lead is Natalie Washington, a football-loving trans woman who is at home discussing why inclusion and representation matters even at the highest level of the game, as she is organizing a midfield with the ball at her foot. Washington sits down with Karleigh Webb to talk about the impact FvT has had on the sport at all levels and where such an effort need to move toward next. In this episode, we bring you a conversation on Inclusive Leadership with the CEO of English Football's leading equality and inclusion organisation. Leaders in Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) is a monthly series covering news, views, comments and debates happening across the equality, diversity and inclusion space. It also shines a spotlight on the progress being made and the challenges being faced in EDI across sport. This episode includes a guest interview with Anthony Burnett, the CEO of Kick It Out. Kick It Out have been working throughout the football, educational and community sectors to challenge discrimination, encourage inclusive practices and campaign for positive change in the game for almost 30 years. Having previously had experience in senior roles within organisations such as Ford, Lloyds Banking Group, and the West Midlands Police, and having worked across the world within the EDI Space, Burnett brings a strong, fresh, and global perspective on the topic of inclusive leadership. Within the discussion, Burnett offers fascinating insight on the distinction between re-examining and re-inventing, lists some examples of leaders setting a shining example, and laments the significant negative impact of when imposter syndrome meets longstanding systemic messaging. The Leaders in EDI podcast is part of the Leaders Meet: Diversity Series, delivered in partnership with Meta, which provides a platform for executives within sport to come together to drive diversity across the industry, accelerate the pace of change and inspire the next generation of executives, through thought-leadership events and digital forums. The boy from Wolverhampton who, as he outlines, was destined to follow Manchester United and has been doing just that, home and away, for the best part of 40 years. It has been a joyful existence but also one of fear and loathing because of his ethnicity. Growing up Asian in Wolverhampton in the 1970s meant being subject to racism from the top of government, specifically in the form of local MP Enoch Powell. It was the time of Powell's infamous Rivers of Blood speech, which as Sanjay explains had a profound, day-to-day impact on his life and love of football. Sanjay and Sachin also talk about what it means to be an Asian fan generally – why and how the immigrant experience influences who those from Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi backgrounds support and why the lack of on-pitch role models matters, not to mention what can be done about it. It's then onto Sanjay's role with Kick It Out - how he got it, why he took it and what he hopes to achieve, specifically in the fight against racism - before the conversation moves onto United. Sachin takes great delight in reflecting on the club's current woes and credit to Sanjay for providing his own thoughts with calm, humour and intelligence. And he gets his own back when the chat moves onto the club's era of dominance under Alex Ferguson, with Sanjay explaining why of all the great moments during that period, it was a night at Selhurst Park that stands out most. Sanjay also talks through his all-time United XI before providing a Gazza-influenced answer to the final question. So download, listen and love. And after you have, please Rate and Review. It would mean a lot. Cheers!
The subject of today's conversation is racism and sport's relationship to it. And our guests are Sanjay Bhandari and John Amaechi. Sanjay is chair of Kick It Out, the charity campaigning to end racial and ethnic discrimination in English football. John Amaechi OBE is a psychologist and founder of the APS Intelligence consultancy. The context for the podcast is English cricket and specifically the accusations of institutional racism made against Yorkshire Cricket Club by Azeem Rafiq, the former player, who detailed his experiences at a highly charged and very emotional meeting of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee on November 16th. The conversation took place before the publication yesterday of the ECB's action plan to tackle the issues raised by the controversy.

The racist chanting and gestures of several members of the crowd at a recent England international match in Bulgaria was a stark reminder that Racism in sports crowds is still an issue that hasn't been driven from stadiums around the world. There have also been recent episodes in British domestic football, particularly in the Manchester derby in which one man in the crowd was given a lifetime ban for what the club believes was clear racist gestures towards two Man Utd players. But there was an ugly situation back in 1810 during a Boxing bout between Tom Cribb, the champion of England, and his African American former slave rival Tom Molyneux. In fact a number of the crowd which numbered thousands turned to violence against Molyneux when he appeared to have gained the upper hand in what was the most important sporting event in the country at the time. An invasion of the ring resulted in an injury to Molyneux's hand which made victory all but impossible. What Molyneux did about it and how the Boxing authorities tried to quell the racial tensions is the story told by Historian Peter Radford, with contributions from Troy Townsend of the anti-racism movement Kick It Out and the former Manchester United and England player Paul Parker who has watched attitudes appear to change over his playing career only to see the ugliness return in the form of online abuse of players. Producer: Tom Alban
