In this episode of the Explaining History Podcast, we examine the opening moves of the Ottoman Empire's war against Britain – a desperate, audacious campaign to seize the Suez Canal that has been largely forgotten but which revealed the fragility of the British Empire and the resilience of the Ottoman army.At the outbreak of the First World War, the Ottoman Empire saw itself surrounded by enemies: the British in Egypt, the Russians to the north, a hostile Habsburg Empire to the west, and a recently hostile Italy in the Mediterranean. The Young Turk government initially hoped to stay out of the war. But when they looked at Britain, France, and Russia, they saw voraciously hungry powers intent on dismembering their empire. Germany offered a security guarantee – unreliable, but the best available.The German High Command placed a high priority on cutting the Suez Canal. Between August and December 1914, 376 transport ships carried nearly 164,000 Allied troops through the canal. It was the vital artery connecting the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean – the lifeline of Britain's Asian empire. If the Ottomans could pinch it off, they could deal Britain a mortal blow and perhaps inspire a pan‑Islamic jihad against British rule.The man chosen to lead the attack was Cemal Pasha. In November 1914, he stood in Istanbul's central train station and publicly proclaimed his intention to conquer Egypt. The British dismissed his pledge as empty rhetoric. They did not believe he could raise an army large enough or cross the waterless, hostile Sinai desert.But Cemal assembled a heterogeneous, multi‑ethnic force – regular soldiers from the Arab provinces, volunteers from Bedouin, Druze, Circassian, Kurdish, Albanian, and even Jewish communities. He wrote to the Sharif of Mecca, Hussein ibn Ali, asking for troops under one of his sons. Hussein's son Ali went no further than Medina – a warning sign Cemal chose to ignore.Against all odds, Cemal's force marched across the Sinai in 12 days, losing neither a man nor a beast. They carried light rations of dates, biscuit, and olives, water carefully rationed, marching through the freezing nights and resting by day. British aerial surveillance initially failed to detect them – early aircraft lacked the range to reach central Sinai.By late January 1915, the British realised the impossible was happening. They withdrew all troops to the western shore of the canal, chained guard dogs on the east bank, and waited. The odds were stacked against the Ottomans – 25,000 attackers against 50,000 dug‑in defenders, backed by warships, armoured trains, and the canal itself. But Cemal had achieved surprise. Gästin der dritten Folge der zweiten Staffel ist Şehnaz Dost, Autorin mehrerer in verschiedenen Zeitschriften publizierten Prosatexte und des im Februar 2024 veröffentlichten Debütroman „ruh“, der im Herbst dieses Jahres auch als Taschenbuch erscheinen wird. Während Cemal, der Protagonist des Romans, versucht Ordnung in die kleinen und großen Unordnungen seines Familien-, Liebes- und Berufsleben zu bringen, verstrickt er sich in seinen Träumen immer wieder und tiefer in seine Familiengeschichte. Dieses von Şehnaz klug komponierte Spiel zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit, Traum und Wirklichkeit, ist durchwirkt von Mythologie, Geschichte und Musik, deren Einfluss diesem Roman seinen unverwechselbaren Sound verleiht. Weil Musik eine so große Rolle in Şehnaz‘ Schreiben spielt, werden Şehnaz und Rasha nicht nur, wie sonst, über eine weibliche literarische Größe sprechen, sondern auch über eine musikalische. Die beiden widmen sich der Autorin Leylâ Erbil, die 1931 in Istanbul geboren wurde und dort 2013 verstorben ist, und ihrem einzigen ins Deutsche übersetzten Roman ‚Eine seltsame Frau‘ (Ü: A. Gillitz-Acar & A. Hoch). Er erzählt die Geschichte von Nermin, die sich in der Türkei der 1950er-1970er Jahre ihren eigenen Weg als Frau, Intellektuelle und politische Denkerin zu bahnen versucht. Der im türkischen Original 1971 veröffentlichte Roman stellt allerdings nur einen kleinen Teil von Leylâ Erbils Romane, Kurzgeschichten und Essays umfassenden Gesamtwerks dar. Während Erbils Büchern zu Klassikern der türkischen modernen Literatur zählen, ist die Autorin in Deutschland kaum bekannt. Şehnaz und Rasha sprechen darüber, warum das so ist, die Dürftigkeit des westlichen Kanons im Allgemeinen sowie die Unzulänglichkeit und Allgegenwärtigkeit von Übersetzung. Deutlich bekannter als Leylâ Erbil ist Sängerin, Rapperin und Songwriterin Lauryn Hill, deren einziges und legendäres Solo-Album „The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill“ von 1998 Şehnaz sehr geprägt hat. In ihrem Gespräch mit Rasha konnte es deshalb nicht unbesprochen bleiben, besonders weil Şehnaz und Rasha in dieser Folge immer wieder darauf zurückkommen werden, wie es ist, einem Text oder Musikstück nach vielen Jahren wiederzubegegnen. Als Produzentinnen standen Rasha auch für diese Folge wieder Kathrin Albrecht und Asya Kurtuldu zur Seite.

Cemal spent nearly 30 years with the firm Dauby O'Connor & Zaleski (DOZ), a leader in affordable housing and real estate accounting, starting there as an intern in 1993 and ultimately becoming Chief Executive Officer in early 2020. He stepped down in 2022 to focus exclusively on his newest project, Ozwell Fitness, an elevated wellness studio that combines the two core elements of wellness–fitness and recovery–into a single, seamless experience. He has a degree in business and accounting from Indiana University and has also taken over 2,000 group fitness classes, with Orangetheory, CycleBar, Fit Flex Fly, Shred 415, Peloton Tread and bike, Flywheel, and SoulCycle as well as several hundred hours of personal training.

What if your morning cup of coffee could alter people's lives?   Cemal Ezel is the proud founder of Change Please, a social enterprise that helps homeless people by training them to become baristas and providing them with jobs. While on a sabbatical in Vietnam, the idea came to him after visiting a tea house staffed by deaf and mute people. The proceeds from the tea house were invested back into the staff's well-being.
