Every five years, we put a cross on a piece of paper – and put it in a ballot box. It's a democratic right. A civic duty. An opportunity to have a say on what matters to us in our communities. 2024 is a big year for elections. Because more of us than ever before will be going to the polls around the globe. In the US. The UK. India. Taiwan. Mexico. South Africa. And many more. And there's a lot at stake – from the rise of the far right and soaring inflation to ongoing geopolitical conflicts and the climate emergency. But voting is one thing. Making change happen, is another altogether. For this episode, we're joined by Rt Hon Caroline Flint, former MP and Government Minister for the Labour party, and Ian Stewart, Chief Economist at Deloitte, as we ask: Do elections change anything? Tune in to find out: What we can learn from past elections to make future elections count How governments can balance short-term issues and long-term challenges Which issues matter most to voters right now How elections impact business – and how businesses can be prepared Enjoyed this episode? Change is accelerating, or so we are told. But while the world is changing, it's far less clear that Britain's economy is. In fact we're seeing less industrial change, as some sectors grow and others shrink, than has been the case for decades. Fewer workers are moving jobs. This matters because, while many of us are ambivalent about change, such economic dynamism has historically been a big driver of productivity – and pay – growth. What has happened to the pace of economic change – for workers, firms and the economy as a whole? How much does this matter? Can policy makers help to foster a more dynamic economy? And what should be done to deal with the disruption that a more dynamic economy could bring? The Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of the key highlights from new research on how to encourage more dynamism, we will hear from leading experts on the gains, challenges and trade-offs that more economic change will bring. Hello! Capitalism, eh? Despite its creative genius, some would say it's at the root of many of the problems we're facing these days, from planetary breakdown, to poor health and social inequality. How can it become the solution? We're revisiting the idea of purposeful business, a way of re-thinking our system so that companies are also putting the needs of people and the environment up there with profit. CEO of Graze Joanna Allen explains how the Better Business Act and B Corp movement will enable this in the UK. We're talking to Charles Conn about Patagonia's 'earth is now our only shareholder' ethos. Finally, we chat to Cemal Ezel, founder of Change Please, a social enterprise which tackles homelessness through the power of selling coffee. After a decade of stagnation and many decades of persistent regional economic divides, the task of securing a brighter economic future for a wider range of places is now up in lights. It's an ambition that resonates with the public too, and if policy makers across local, city-wide and national government are to take effective action, its vital they understand what people want – and don't – when it comes to growth in their home towns and cities. Do people think their local area has fared well or poorly over recent years? Which routes do they see for their place, and the people in it, to succeed? How do people's experiences differ between major city centres, nearby commuter areas and less well-connected towns? What are the factors pushing people away from whey they live, and what are the pull factors keeping them there? The Resolution Foundation and Open Innovations are hosting an in-person, hybrid event in Leeds – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of the key highlights from new Resolution Foundation research on people's experience of the economy in their local area, we will hear from leading experts – including the Metro Mayor for West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin – on what this means for local and regional economic strategies, as well as the Government's levelling up agenda in Westminster. Cemal Ezel is a social entrepreneur with a big heart and a great cause. Working with homeless charities, Change Please is a brilliantly simple not for profit enterprise that takes homeless people from the streets and gets them into employment and back into society using coffee as a vehicle. Virgin Airlines, Barings Bank, Elior Catering to name but a few have all switched to Change Please as their coffee provider. You will also see their kiosks and carts starting to appear in and around our cities. The individual stories are moving and powerful. The enterprise focusses on a ‘job first’ model, to empower its people. As well as lifting people out of homelessness, Change Please allows people to do good everyday simply by choosing where they buy their coffee. It helps to humanise and break down stories and labels. “We’re not going to have social change in our society unless we have social enterprise as a part of it.”, says Cemal passionately. “Disrupting established marketers by adding the social element”. Away from the heartwarming stories, as a seasoned business professional Cemal is acutely aware of the reasons why businesses take on Change Please. There is a massive focus on quality and taste tests have been hugely successful when pitted along side other more well known brands. Also, the kudos and ability to win contracts by being associated with such a strong socially responsible cause has proved to be the number one draw for businesses. “It’s not always about 'doing the right thing' as people might think”. Cemal understands this and makes sure it works for everyone. Now expanding internationally and gaining increasing mainstream media coverage as they grow, this is one of life’s great stories. One of four enterprises, Cemal is not limiting himself to coffee. Hear more in this uplifting and powerful podcast about how a trip to Vietnam and 'seeing signs' led to such an incredible initiative. Welcome to Episode #4 from the Festival Of Enterprise Podcast 2020."I didn't have any experience of homelessness or know anybody really, that was living on the streets, you know. I didn't really know all of the areas that we would need to make a change to their life. But actually seeing how the sale of coffee in our case, is making a difference to someone getting their keys for the first time for their new flat or to being paid the living wage or to get their bank account. All those issues which they're struggling with, all coming about through the sale of coffee. Just was such an incredible moment. So therefore, for me being able to look back now and say actually, firstly this models worked in at first instance, but we're growing at such a speed that it's making on a day by day basis, a real difference to people's lives."I talk to Cemal Ezel, Founder and CEO of Change Please, who are using coffee to tackle homelessness by retraining people who are homeless as baristas, and providing a London living wage job, housing, bank account, therapy and support. From selling coffee across London through mobile vans, Change Please coffee is now stocked by Sainsbury's nationwide and served on Virgin Atlantic planes and trains. Join Cemal at the Festival Of Enterprise in London to hear his full story and ask him your questions in person. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Welcome to the trailer for Episode #4, Season 2 of the Festival Of Enterprise podcast 2020."The first say four, five months was all about us learning what we need to do, who we are, what's our kind of position within the coffee market. And I think slowly, there's a bit of a tendency to kind of see the first people that come along who know what they're talking about, and try and get them involved to give you support. And I just wanted to kind of hold back a little bit and make sure that actually the people that do join the board are people that are genuinely going to invest time, energy, relationships and also add value as opposed to coming doing this as partly a vanity project. And I think that's one of the reasons that we've grown so quickly because we've chosen some really incredible people."Join me later this week for the full episode with Cemal Ezel, founder and CEO of Change Please, where using coffee to tackle homelessness. Cemal was named social entrepreneur of the year, was the winner of the $1 million Chivas Venture fund and Richard Branson's startup of the year 2018. HAPPY NEW YEAAAARRR! We hope you’re striding into 2020 with a sense of rejuvenation and a fresh perspective on the year ahead. We have the most inspiring of podcasts to help you usher in the first week of 2020. Homelessness is a growing issue in the UK. We believe that the placemaking industry is perfectly placed to play a key role in creating lasting, substantive solutions to the causes of homelessness, as well as lifting people out of vulnerable positions through providing jobs, skills and training. In this podcast we talk to Chris Hancock and Julian Burnham, who, as well as being utterly lovely people are inspiring advocates for the Homelessness. Chris Hancock is Head of Best Practice at Crisis UK and Julian Burnham is Managing Director of Change Please. They join Samantha Sen to kick off a new decade and talk about the causes of Homelessness, support and solutions and how the placemaking industry can get involved. Along the way we talk about the build up of pressure in todays society, people falling through the net and the importance of empowerment. We hear about what it means to be able to give something, after years begging and why getting people indoors is the best way to start to address other life limiting issues. The solutions are complex and it’s a process but there are opportunities to get involved. Is it possible to change the world, simply by changing where you buy your coffee? This was just one of many questions discussed at Alex Chisnall’s Entrepreneurs’ Summit in Bournemouth. It brought together a group of inspirational speakers, including Cemal Ezel, founder of the award-winning social enterprise, Change Please. If you’ve not yet come across Change Please coffee, you soon will. It’s stocked in Sainsbury’s nationwide and it is Virgin Trains’ beverage of choice. If you live in London, Cambridge, Birmingham, Coventry, Manchester or Edinburgh, you might have spotted its distinctive grey carts with a bright yellow circle on the side. What you might not know is that all the baristas at Change Please have experienced periods of homelessness – but with the right training and support, they’re able to make sleeping rough a thing of the past. Perhaps the most inspirational aspect to Cemal’s work, is his conviction that businesses with a genuine social conscience will be leading the way, commercially and morally, over the next few years. It’s a point he makes powerfully, first in his presentation, and then in the conversation I had with him afterwards, on stage.
I welcome Cemal Ezel, Founder and Ceo of Change Please to episode #179 of Screw It, Just Do It: UK Social Entrepreneur Of The Year, 2017, $1 Million Chivas Venture Winner, and Richard Branson's Startup of the Year 2018 - and the man responsible for the coffee you're drinking onboard a Virgin Train or Virgin Atlantic Airways aircraft. I had the pleasure of catching up with Cemal twice in one week in October, as he very kindly spoke at my Entrepreneur Summit 2019 and at the SME forum I host for British American Business every quarter for UK businesses looking to scale in the US. Now I've known Cemal for 4 or 5 years now and the growth of his business has been nothing short of phenomenal. I last interviewed him two years ago in 2017 and other than Piers Linney, this is the only repeat guest I've had on this show. Why: Because my 2017 interview with him was, and still is, my personal favourite of every episode ever recorded for this show. I wanted to highlight what's possible - anything - if you're super-focused, persevere and are very clear on your why. It's just one hell of a story. Change Please trains people who are homeless as barista's and provides each person with a London living wage job, housing, bank account and mental health support. Today's episode comes in two parts, first my chat with Cemal in front of our live audience, complete with paper rustling form yours truly, secondly, an up to date talk from Cemal on Change Please's expansion into the US and the challenges that they have faced. We talk about: The perceptions that need changing around social businesses Distribution being the biggest challenge The currency of the future StartUp!

Sahar Hashemi is the co-founder of Coffee Republic, the first chain of American-style coffee bars in the UK. She left behind a promising legal career in 1995 to launch the business from her mother’s kitchen table. When it sold six years later, it had 110 stores and a turnover of £30 million. She has since founded confectionery brand Skinny Candy, and her latest venture, Change Please, is a social project which trains and hires homeless people to run coffee carts. In this in-depth interview, she describes how businesses can succeed by encouraging staff to think like entrepreneurs, argues that success isn’t about the “big idea” that comes to you on a plate - and recalls the “stab in her heart” when Coffee Republic went into administration nine years after she “handed it to the grown-ups”.

"At the start of this bus journey this american traveller sat next to me and asked me what I did. I explained I wasn't too happy with my job and he basically said something that changed my life. He said if you're not happy you should do the rocking chair test. Essentially this is to imagine sitting in your rocking chair at the age of 90 and thinking about your legacy in the world, who you have helped, have you left the world in a better place, who's going to remember you, and for why. That was a pretty profound moment at the start of an eighteen hour bus journey. I was thirty minutes in going "No, no, no. I haven't done anything of any significance that's going to make a difference in the world. If I died tomorrow no-one's going to remember me. I've not left the world in a bette place and that really struck me hard. Whilst everyone else was asleep on the bus I was bolt upright thinking about my life about what I need to do to make changes." So #screwitjustdoit is one year old. To mark the occasion and celebrate the success I have selfishly picked my favouite interview of the last 12 months. Ridiculously hard choice, but I did it. And now I want you to do the same. Message me @alexchisnall on twitter, linkedin or email alex@startupu.co.uk and let me know your favourite. I'd really like to know and would mean a lot. You may have in fact missed this episode which went out just a few days before Chiristmas when I spoke to Cemal Ezel, founder of social enterprise Change Please. Cemal was crowned Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 and has a story that really resonates with me, especially as i've been reflecting back on 2017-2018. Change Please essentially uses coffee to tackle homelessness by training homeless people to become baristas and providing a London living wage job, housing, a bank account, therapy and support. Selling coffee across London through mobile vans, Change Please coffee is now being stocked in Sainsbury's supermarkets nationwide and with locations in New York and San Francisco after a chance encounter on Richard Branson's Necker Island the future is one of hope and promise. Cemal and I talk about the rocking chair test, regular reviewing and celebrating, networking..plus rocketships and parachutes..stay with us on that one.. Let's StartUp!
In the first episode of this new series for 2018 Nikki Bedi meets Thomasina Miers, founder of Mexican food chain Wahaca, and Andrew Hunt, founder of African-inspired superfood company Aduna. Together they discuss how they’ve built ‘profit with purpose’ into their business journeys – from scaling sustainability within the restaurant world, to kickstarting a new industry for rural African producers. And with the VOOM competition in full swing, we hear from one of the judges of this year’s Virgin Unite Impact Award, Cemal Ezel (of Change Please) whose own company is fighting homelessness with coffee.
