ABOUT BONNIE-JILL LAFLIN AND IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN Some of the most influential women in sports tell their stories of courage, adversity, and triumph to trailblazer Bonnie-Jill Laflin, the first and only female NBA scout with the Los Angeles Lakers, in her new book, In A League of Her Own: Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports. A half-century after Title IX legislation leveled the playing field for women and girls, the time has come to celebrate the lives and careers of some of the most notable groundbreaking women in sports, while also encouraging future generations to make history of their own. In a League of Her Own: Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports shares the stories of nineteen impactful women, including Billie Jean King, Rachel Balkovec, Danica Patrick, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Laila Ali, Jeanie Buss, and Mary Lou Retton and gives them a voice to share their experiences across the sports industry. These iconic women open up to Bonnie-Jill Laflin, herself a trailblazer as the first and only female NBA scout, about the sobering realities females face in the sports world and the many obstacles they had to overcome. But they also celebrate the amazing support they received from colleagues, friends, family, and the women who came before them, and impart their own desires to inspire young women through their stories. They discuss such issues as the pressures of social media, the sexism that still exists in boardrooms and locker rooms, and their hopes for closer equality in the sports space. Their journeys are each unique, but together, they have changed the face of sports and culture forever. She is also the founder of Hounds and Heroes and Horses, a non-profit that pairs rescue dogs as service and therapy dogs with wounded warriors and veterans, as well as rescue horses as equine therapy for our recuperating service members. Working to improve the lives of veterans, she has traveled to military bases across the country and abroad on 19 USO tours, including visits to bases in Iraq and Afghanistan. Have you heard of the term 'sharenting'? That's when a parent, caregiver or relative shares content about their child's life, such as news, videos, images, online. Some have even turned it into a lucrative business. The psychologist Dr Elaine Kasket was an habitual 'sharent', chronicling her young daughter's life on social media. But then four years ago at the age of nine, her daughter told her she didn't like her doing it, so she stopped. Elaine's written about 'sharenting' and her experiences in a chapter in her new book Reboot: Reclaiming Your Life in a Tech-Obsessed World. She joins Jessica Creighton along with her daughter Zoe. British Gymnastics has published a list of 62 banned coaches and members, as part of its response to the damning Whyte Review published in 2022, which detailed 'systemic' issues of physical and emotional abuse in the sport. The campaign group Gymnasts for Change has accused the governing body of "serious institutional betrayal" for not including more people on the list, who they believe meet the criteria. We heard from the co-founder of Gymnasts for Change, Claire Heafford and BBC Sports correspondent Natalie Pirks. In the 70s and 80s, nearly 5,000 people with haemophilia contracted HIV or Hepatitis C after being infected by tainted blood clotting products. Over 2,800 people died including women and children in what was described as 'the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS'. With an ongoing public inquiry, we spoke to Sunday Times Political Editor Caroline Wheeler, who has interviewed countless victims and has been following the story for 20 years. You'll no doubt be familiar with the book Frankenstein - but how much do you know about its author Mary Shelley? That's a question that led director, Lucy Speed, and producer, Deborah Clair, to write, direct and produce their new play that's about to start touring in the UK. Conception - Mary Shelley: The Making of a Monster tells the story of a journey of self-discovery, as the Frankenstein author returns, years later, to Lake Geneva where she wrote her famous novel. The play is hitting the stage around the 200th anniversary of the first publication of the novel under Mary Shelley's name - having originally been published anonymously. This week, Jemma and Marina, cordially invite you to The Troscars (that's the Trawl Oscars). Hugh Grant wins one for 'most whatevs performance on a red carpet' and there are many more virtual, meaningless awards to be bestowed throughout the ep. The 'Stop The Boats' saga rumbles on, with the policy only ever seeming more cruel the more you scrutinise it. 'Gary-gate' reached extraordinary proportions, culminating in the entire BBC Sports department not working in a heart-warming show of solidarity. Unfortunately, GB News were there to step into the breach with their version of the show. It was, as you might expect, terrible but pure gold for The Trawl. Tories pretended to love football and seemed unable to fathom that the ratings had anything to do with rubbernecking What a time to be alive. The “Fab Five” – Ghana, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia and Cameroon – will represent Africa at the World Cup in Qatar. And on Friday, we will learn who they will play, when the draw is made. This is a World Cup like no other both in terms of its location and timing: with it being played in November and December this year. The tournament will not see a man considered to be one of the best players in the world – Mohamed Salah and his side Egypt, after they were kicked out by Senegal, in what was a repeat of the recent Africa Cup of Nations Final in February. But it does mean another global stage for Sadio Mané. Nigeria and its array of stars, also missed out after suffering defeat to their rivals Ghana. Cameroon, clinched an 8th World Cup qualification - a record for an African side - following a dramatic game in Algeria. As Qatar 2022 World Cup awaits, Victoria Uwonkunda is joined by BBC Sports journalists, Nishat Ladha and Mimi Fawaz to discuss how the African teams might fair. Presenter: Victoria Uwonkunda - @Msuwonkunda Guests: Nishat Ladha - @NishatL and Mimi Fawaz - @MimosaFawaz

Earning her second Canadian Screen Award (Best Local Newscast) in 2021, Lindsay Dunn has become one of Canada's most respected talents. Honing her reporting skills for the better part of the last two decades, Dunn grew up in Regina and spent much of her childhood dreaming about reporting on the world's biggest sporting events — especially those of the WNBA and NBA. Dunn currently holds the position of National Sports and Music reporter for CityNews and is the first to ever hold that title — since it was created to honour both her passions in life.As Toronto's only local news female sportscaster for a national network (CityTV), Dunn has covered the biggest sporting events of the last decade. From Kobe Bryant's last game in Los Angeles to the Raptors Championship, Lindsay's everyday approach to reporting allows her to connect with sports fans across the globe. She is regularly featured as a WNBA/NBA expert on BBC News, BBC World TV and BBC Sportsworld and has appeared on ESPN, TSN, CTV, Global and Rawlco Radio as a basketball commentator. In addition to her love of sport, Dunn has an unrelenting passion for music and the artists who create it. Over her 11 year career, she has had the opportunity to highlight the incredible stories of artists such as Drake, Keith Richards and Dolly Parton. Working to celebrate the human-aspect of every success story, Dunn shines as an entertainment reporter at Canada's biggest events including the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the JUNO Awards, among others.Nominated for a 2021 Canadian Screen Award (although already 2x CSA winner), for her work as a host and producer on the ‘Heroes of Covid' special, Dunn is a regular contributor to Sportsnet's monthly interview series “Top of Her Game,” writes weekly WNBA features for Sportsnet, and is a member of the Pro Basketball Writers Association. When not reporting, she spends her time working on a documentary that showcases the impact that Canadians have had on the UK music industry while listening to every album ever made by an NBA player on vinyl (yes, she has them all).Find more about Lindsay Dunn:https://toronto.citynews.ca/author/lindsay-dunn/https://twitter.com/LindsayDunnhttps://www.instagram.com/lindsaydunntv

Alison Walker was the first woman to report live on a football match for the BBC. That’s a significant moment looking back but it didn’t feel like it at the time for Alison – she was too busy focusing on doing a good job while navigating the hostilities of the male-dominated media pack. However, this achievement heralded an outstanding career in sports broadcasting that has included covering seven Olympic Games and compering the Commonwealth Games athletics events at Hampden Park in 2014. A self-confessed Hamilton Accies fan, Alison tells the story of her career with great humour and some wonderful anecdotes. But she also discusses why she is campaigning for close relatives to be able to visit their family members in care homes – her parents suffer from dementia and she hasn’t been able to give them a hug for 10 months. We also close with a song that Alison has co-written as part of the campaign. Recorded on 11 January 2021. www.allencomms.co.uk
Presented by Jenni Murray. Every few days we hear of more jobs going. The Bank of England said at the end of last week that unemployment is likely to hit 2.5 million this year. That means the jobless total would almost double by Christmas. Tonight there’s a Channel 4 documentary series starting which focuses on a job centre in Leeds and the people who use it. Jenni is joined by Olivia, who is a single mother mum and unemployed, Jan Baxter, who works at the jobcentre in Leeds and Helen Barnard, Acting Director of Joseph Rowntree Foundation. In Daisy Johnson’s novel Sisters July and September have an uncannily close relationship and one is more powerful than the other. Their mother struggles to cope and when things come to a head after a nasty incident at school they flee to a house in Yorkshire which turns out not to be the refuge they needed. Jenni talks to Daisy Johnson about horror, adolescence and the relationship between the two. The BBC Elite British Sportswomen's Survey was sent to 1,068 women in 39 different sports and received 543 responses. The survey covers trolling; funding and impact of Coronavirus; Periods and the Pill; Racism; Sexism; Abortion and Family Planning; Mental Health. Jenni discusses the findings with Becky Grey, BBC Sports reporter, Susannah Townsend, Gold medal hockey player, Priyanaz Chatterji, Scottish cricketer for Scottish Women’s Team and Tammy Parlour, CEO of Women Sport’s Trust. The English Premier League's plans to finish the season after weeks of shutdown. Almost all major European football leagues have been on hold since March due to coronavirus. Ed Butler speaks to BBC Sports journalist Emlyn Begley about missing live football and his new love for the Belarusian league - the only place in Europe still staging matches. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire explains why failing to finish the season could cost the Premier League more than $1bn. And football club chairman Mark Palios says the current plan of playing matches behind closed doors is not an option for less wealthy clubs in lower leagues. This morning The Premier spoke to Fred & Lisa and answered some of your questions. Lisa had a horrible encounter on the way to work this morning, found out what happened here... and if you need a bit of a laugh, have a listen to how a BBC Sports commentator is passing the time while there’s no sport.
A multi-million pound takeover of the English Premier League team Newcastle United by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund could be in the works. BBC Sports reporter Alistair Magowan explains what we know so far about the deal. In the meantime Ellen R Wald, author of Saudi Inc, speculates on Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman's motivation for wanting to buy Newcastle. It’s not likely to be profit, explains football finance expert Kieran Maguire. Perhaps prestige? But given that the Saudi state’s record on human rights is abysmal, as Felix Jakens from Amnesty UK explains, is it appropriate that they should be allowed to buy the team? We hear from Norman Riley, Newcastle United diehard and deputy editor of the True Faith fanzine. Producers: Edwin Lane, Frey Lindsay. (Picture: Newcastle supporters in the crowd.
