Linguist, author and film-maker, Helena Norberg-Hodge. Helena is the founder and director of the international non-profit organisation, Local Futures, a pioneer of the new economy movement, and the creator of World Localization Day. Her work, spanning almost half a century, has received the support of a wide range of international figures, including Jane Goodall and HH the Dalai Lama. To provide greater context to this conversation and the work of Helena and Local Futures, we'd highly recommend watching two of Helena's films; Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh and ‘The Economics of Happiness'. Both are incredible award-winning documentaries. And a lot of conversation during this conversation was predicated on these two pieces of film. And finally, her most recent book, Local is Our Future: Steps to an Economics of Happiness, outlines how a systemic economic shift from global to local can address the world's social, economic, ecological and spiritual crises. Have you heard of Regenerative Agriculture lately? We look at it in-depth with Mark Gardner.Regenerative Agriculture is a system of farming principles and practices that increases biodiversity, enriches soils, improves watersheds, and enhances ecosystem services. It aims to capture carbon in soil and aboveground biomass, reversing current global trends of atmospheric accumulation. At the same time, it offers increased yields, resilience to climate instability, and higher health and vitality for farming and ranching communities. The system draws from decades of scientific and applied research by the global communities of organic farming, agroecology, Holistic Management, and agroforestry. Extending the life of clothes by just nine months of active use would reduce carbon, water and waste footprints by around 20-30% each.Remember:'Our choices, our voice, CAN make a difference.'I’d like to thank Charlotte and Dan for their willingness to work hard on their business for positive change, their strong voice in the clothing industry and time to have a conversation.Links for ReRunWebsitehttps://rerunclothing.org/ Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/rerun.clothing/?hl=en Twitterhttps://twitter.com/rerunclothing?lang=en Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/rerunclothing/ Trees Not Teeshttps://www.treesnottees.com/ Want some stats?CLOTHES GOING TO LANDFILLEvery year it is estimated that 300,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK. That's the equivalent of 544,311,000 Olympic gold medals being chucked away.THE LIFE OF A SHOEThe average life of a running shoe on our feet is 4 - 6 months, if sent to landfill they then hang around for a further 11,994 months before starting to decompose.CARBON FOOTPRINTCurrently, over 5% of the UK's total annual carbon and water footprints result from clothing consumption. Extending the average life of clothes by 3 months would result in a 5 to 10 % reduction of their carbon, water and waste footprints, extending the life by 9 months would result in a 20 to 30 % reduction.UK HOUSEHOLD WASTEIn the average UK household, nearly a third of clothes haven't been worn in the last year. That's over £1000 per household, £30 billion of unused clothes in the UK.How can I help?*Prolong the use of your existing clothing and equipment and create new stories with them*Fix anything before you fling it*Donate any unwanted clothes or equipment to ReRun*Organise a collection of unwanted running gear or equipment for ReRun at your local club*Donate your unwanted clothes or equipment to another project or runners you know*Sell on your own unwanted clothes or equipment to prolong the life of it*Smile and tell everyone how wonderful they are*Encourage everyone else you know to do one of the above

Fancy some life advice and running advice from one of the greatest of our time?‘When it feels like you can’t go any farther: Left foot, right foot, left foot…’-Courtney D.Humble, dedicated and very capable at making friends with nearly everyone she crosses paths with. It’s a real honour to speak with Courtney and get to know more about her and how she moves to the beat of her own drum, setting an example for us all to take notice of and a lesson from.Next time in part 2 of this yarn, we will get to yarn with Kev, too. Remember: ‘I was already a wreck just a few hours into my first 100-mile attempt in 2012. Made a lot of mistakes during that race, but the biggest one was getting stuck in a whirlpool of negativity. I convinced myself that I wasn’t capable of making it to the finish line, and dropped out at mile 60. Don’t get stuck in the whirlpool!’-Courtney Dauwalter I’d like to thank Courtney, for the yarn yet another fun conversation with a leading figure in the sport of running. Jill Wheatly, in my mind, is a mountain of positivity and continuous inspiration. In her own words ‘Every day is an opportunity to celebrate impermanence and the life I nearly lost.’ And I am truly grateful to have met this champion of human endurance and the ability to hold space for this conversation with her. Please take your time to listen to her story. In the blink of an eye, Jill went from being an active, autonomous athlete to suffering a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that took 70% of her vision and nearly her life. This has led Jill to become someone who aims to be mindful in every moment and make every second count adventuring in mountains around the world. Remember‘A story is only interesting because of what one overcomes and works through — so too is life.’ I’d like to thank Jill, for yet another inspiring conversation and for sharing her incredible story which is continuing to be a light for people she meets. Beautifully wise and radically honest, Gabriel Mazur. Traversing through childhood in Czechoslovakia, 9 years in a Tibetan Buddhist Hermitage, working in the field of mental health and now an IFMGA Mountain Guide, Gabriel has gained experience in many areas which I am grateful to speak about.
