What does it mean to live a good life? And can your running practice help you get there? In this episode of The Trailhead, Zoë Rom and Brendan Leonard sit down with Sabrina Little: ultrarunner, philosopher, ethics professor, mom of (soon to be) three, and author of The Examined Run: Why Good People Make Better Runners. Sabrina's work sits at the fascinating intersection of character development, everyday ethics, and endurance sports. She teaches philosophy at Christopher Newport University and writes a beloved ethics column for iRunFar—and she's here to explore how running can be a "laboratory for virtue," where our daily choices shape who we become both on and off the trail. Together, we unpack: How running teaches us about moral character (whether we know it or not) Everyday ethical choices in sport and life—beyond the big scandals Why we hedge the truth (even when no one's watching) What it means to celebrate others' success while still chasing your own The role of humor and humility in building resilience How parenting and philosophy collide And why runners aren't just chasing finish lines—they're practicing becoming better people.
BONUS POD: Keep It Peripheral—Eszter Horanyi of iRunFar. Nolan's 14, The Tour Divide, And A Life Of Possibilities. Kia ora e te whānau! Sometimes it happens. You speak with someone cool and interesting then you come away with a nagging stem of a question that you should have asked. When I spoke to Eszter Horanyi this was some variation of the following. “What does Coddiwompling even mean??” Well if you must know, to Coddiwomple means to travel purposefully to an unknown destination. And goodness me if that isn't a raison d'etre for Colorado-based Horanyi. Growing up in the mountains as a free-range kid, and then racing bikes for a decade, including a 19-day Tour Divide FKT, transitioning to two feet to focus on the shiny things in the periphery and not “big goals”. Splitting her time between Colorado and Te Waiponamu Eszter embodies the true spirit of adventure and freedom that our sport can (sometimes) only touch on. Tonight we kick it off by talking about Canal Corridor 100 and our friend Stephanie Campbell's second place finish! Then we discuss the history of Indiana Trail 100 along with what a great community surrounds the race and go over the results from this year's event. We also go over results from Oil Creek 100, Kodiak 100, and the Heartland 100. Then we talk about Bryon Powell from iRunFar who just competed in and won the Ultra Trail Gobi 400K stage race in western China. In addition we discuss race results from Cape Fear 24 hour race where costume chic was out there representing. We dive into a new 50K in Cascade Locks, Oregon called Angel's Rest where they just had the inaugural running and now we both want to run it. Also, Free State Trail Run 40 miler was over the weekend and they had one finisher, spoiler alert she took first place overall. Nedd Brockman finished his 1,000 mile run in 12 and a half days. He didn't break the world record but he did raise at least 2.6 million dollars for homelessness in Australia. Pretty impressive accomplishment all around. There is a fundraiser being done in western NC at the Old Fort Strong Endurance Festival December 7th and as we talk about some of our favorite ultrarunners will be out there. Proceeds will go to residents and businesses whose homes were damaged or lost due to hurricane Helene. We end with a guy that did a run during hurricane Milton, basically running through the storm, there is always one! Sabrina Little is a 5x national champion ultra runner who happens to also be a professor of moral philosophy. During her career, when she wasn't breaking American records, she earned a Phd in Philosophy at Baylor University. More recently though, she published her book “the Examined run - why good people make better runners” all about how running fits into a happy and fulfilling life. Her book is filled with thought-provoking lessons for anyone who loves to run and she is the perfect guest to explore how running can make us better people or even how practicing virtuous traits can make you a better runner. One of the key tenets of Sabrina's writing is that virtuous traits like patience and empathy are teachable and performance-enhancing, so practicing them is beneficial to excelling in sport. This means that becoming a better person can actually be a tool to improve your running! Some of the topics we cover include: Why virtue can be beneficial to athletic performance How to practice building traits of virtue through your running How to find your “why” for running What are Sabrina's thoughts on the role of running in a happy life Sabrina has a way of making philosophical topics approachable and relevant to runners that we're sure you'll love. Tune-in and find out for yourself how you can become a happier and faster runner all at the same time. If you didn't know, mitochondria are often called the “powerhouse” because most of the energy your muscle cells need during aerobic running is supplied by mitochondria. This is why one of the primary goals of all the runs we do is to increase the amount of new mitochondria in our cells and to increase their efficiency. But, now there's a new way to also improve your mitochondria - Mitopure from time-line nutrition. Mitopure restores mitochondrial function, so every cell in your body has the energy to do its job and keep you healthy and functioning right. In fact, clinical studies have shown that 500mg of Urolithin, one of the main ingredients in Mitopure, can significantly increase muscle strength & endurance with no other change in lifestyle. Brett Hornig and Leah Yingling join Singletrack to recap the Lululemon-backed FURTHER event which took place outside of Palm Springs, CA about a week ago. It was equal parts interesting from performance, research, technology, marketing, and lifestyle standpoints and we touch on a lot of that in this episode through the lens of Leah's experience logging 400 miles over the 6-day event and Brett helping crew her during that time frame. Specifically, we recap her race experience, talk about the multi-day race strategies she picked up over the 6 days, and learn about some of the ultrarunning-related research that was conducted and when that will be available for public consumption. No doubt many of you were glued to the live tracker for all the athletes out there, Mike McMonagle's photo journalism, and some of the reporting from Outside and IRunFar. Hopefully, this episode adds another interesting angle to one of the more unique events we've seen in the running sphere in at least a few years.Timestamps:01:00 Initial Thoughts and Event Background08:34 Cognitive Tests and Mental Performance10:29 Preconceptions vs. Reality of a Multi-Day Event23:02 Training Volume and Performance37:56 Sleep Strategies43:28 Medical Support, Managing Injuries49:10 Wearable Technology - Core Temp, Glucose, Etc01:09:47 Insights from Shoe and Apparel Tech, Biomechanics Feedback01:17:05 The Purpose and Impact of Further01:26:37 The Mental Game in Multi-Day Events01:32:39 Post-Event Recovery and Future Races, Final TakeawaysSponsors:Naak - use code SINGLETRACK15 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 15% off your purchase.Rabbit - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.runinrabbit.com/) to get 20% off your next order.Brooks Running - check out their High Point clothing collection and new and improved Cascadia 17 shoe at this link (https://www.brooksrunning.com/singletrack).deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20) to get 20% off your next order.Links:Follow Leah on Instagram, Strava, TwitterFollow Brett on Instagram, Strava, YoutubeFollow Singletrack on Instagram, Strava, YoutubeSupport the show

This week we go over race results from last weekend and a few of them were very sloppy conditions. We preview and make our predictions for Black Canyon 100K this weekend. There is a crazy amount of elite ultrarunners of all experience levels running this year. The course might be crazy too with some snow in the town where the race starts and super high rivers to cross. We discuss this new runner tracking system that will be the wave of the future. Finally we give kudos to Will Sprouse, one of the most unique ultrarunners out there who has interesting fueling methods and just achieved something that not many ultrarunners have done. Is the Apple Watch Ultra ready for long-distance running, including ultramarathons ? Here's iRunFar's in-depth review of Apple's top of the line smartwatch. You may have heard that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 released in September, 2023. The bad news? This isn't a review of the Ultra 2 — yet, we'll review it in due time. The good news? The features and functionality of what is covered in this review are relevant to the Ultra 2. Mainly because most of the updates for the Ultra 2 are quality-of-life changes versus changes to running functions. The Ultra 2 introduces a new processor, some new gestures, a slightly brighter screen at maximum capacity, and a dimmer screen for nighttime interaction. WatchOS was moved up to version 10, but we'll receive that update for this model and provide additional commentary on any significant changes that come with the new software. Now, onto the review of the Apple Watch Ultra. 00:00 - Intro 02:47 - Device Overview 08:12 - Running Screens 12:10 - Safety Features 17:35 - Maps and Routing 19:51 - Smartwatch Functions 23:23 - Filling in the Map Gap 26:40 - Final Thoughts

Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Virtues: Perseverance, Patience, Courage, Accountability, and Practical Wisdom How do these virtues apply to plant based nutrition and movement? Pride, Envy, and Intemperance. How do these impede our success in attaining ultimate health and wellness. Dr. Sabrina Little wrote an article in IRunFar.com applying those virtues to sport. Transitioning to a plant based healthy lifestyle is a growth over time for most of us. There are obstacle we don't even know exist until we begin. The path is not perfect but filled with twists and turns. I hope you enjoy my lament on a more virtuous path to plant based nutrition. It might even help your running or favorite sport. We reference the great two-part article Joe wrote at iRunFar nine years ago: The Western States Killing Machine, Part One The Western States Killing Machine, Part Two: The Marble in the Groove But don't worry if you're not one of the lucky 381 runners who will be tackling Western States this year. Our conversation will offer valuable principles that can help you in your own runs and races, no matter the distance or terrain. How to Silence the Killing Machine: Step 1: Prepare to Problem Solve Step 2: The Mental Taper Step 3: Turning Inward Step 4: Presence and Perspective Step 5: Don't. Panic. Step 6: The Will to Finish Trumps All Step 7: Like a Marble in the Groove Learn more about how Joe can help you with gait analysis, coaching, or therapy visit UhanPerformance.com
Are you ready to take your running game to the next level? Whether you're gearing up for marathons, ultra-races, or simply looking to improve your endurance, this is the episode you don't want to miss. In this special rerun edition from two years ago, we dive into the valuable insights shared by the renowned runner and coach, Andy Jones-Wilkins. Get ready as we explore the seven simple yet powerful rules that can transform your long runs from good to extraordinary. But hold on, these rules are just the beginning! We'll be sure to follow up with more episodes to keep you on track for success. So, lace up your shoes, tune in, and let's embark on the journey towards long run excellence! Don't run a single hill (the definition of a hill varies by fitness level) Run all downs, (unless the hill taxes the knees, quads, or risk a fall) Start early with a purposeful walk/run rhythm. Keep the body fresh, do not put yourself in a catch up position. EVERY time you shift from a run to a walk, use this mantra, “Walk with purpose!” Walking with a purpose is effective and a strategy. Manage the aidstations, show up with a plan. Let a volunteer fill your hydration. Next, take care of your gear and medical. Select your fuel, eat it as you walk out. (No loitering). You cover an enormous amount of ground when you purposefully walk. Monitor anything that feels slightly off; calories, hydration, electrolytes, salt on face, salt on shirt, color of urine, cramping, stomach, apply lube to anything hot (chaffage) and listen to negative mental chatter. Negative chatter is your body's way of telling you that you need to change something, if you push through the early warning sign, catastrophe is around the corner. Give yourself permission to back off your effort and recapture anything that isn't working or needs correcting. Most issues can be solved by backing off the pace. Give it time and you can return to your gameplan. SCOTT has a story for this one Trust your math. Stay with your plan. Worrying requires energy. You need that energy to finish the run (Do all the math before the run) and share it with your crew/pacer.
