Better known as a mountain and trail runner, when Donnie Campbell took up gravel cycling he started winning races and smashing FKTs. Donnie has been on the podcast twice, talking about the wild places he runs (Ep. 2) and setting a new record for the fastest self-propelled round of Scotland's "Munro" mountains (Ep. 35). Now he explains his very different approach to bikepacking races - he doesn't sleep! Well OK, that's not strictly true, but he doesn't sleep much, even on the 2000km off-road French Divide, reckoned to be the hardest bikepacking race in Europe. We chatted in his kitchen.Donnie's coaching website - Get Active Running Instagram Facebook

Fifty episodes seems a good time to bring the first series of Always Another Adventure to a close. When will series two start - I don't know yet. It'll be when I have the energy and enthusiasm to chase guests who interest me and start recording with them.In the meantime my efforts are directed towards the Always Another Adventure YouTube channel. Please check it out if you haven't already. Oh and stay subscribed to the podcasts please, then when they return a new one will drop into your phone. You might like to know 89% of you download to a mobile device. 69% of you use an iPhone. 49% of you use Apple Podcasts. 17% use an Android phone. Very few of you listen on a smart speaker - too few to count. 85% are in Europe, 8% North America and 4% Oceana.Since starting in March 2020 those fifty episodes have received more than 65 thousand downloads, and I hope they'll continue while we all wait for series two. Each episode gets about 1500 downloads with the single most popular episode being Donnie Campbell's record breaking self propelled Munro round with well over 2000 listens. Mark Beaumont, Emily Chapel and Josh Ibbett are not far behind. They're all still available for download and I expect those numbers to increase. Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! On this bonus episode, Christian and Brett have a quick but insightful discussion with Jason Sudeikis' high school basketball coach - Donnie Campbell!Sudeikis has shared that the character of Ted Lasso is partially based on his former coach, and we had a ton of fun talking with Coach Donnie about his upbringing in Lyons, Kansas (it's the next town over from us, y'all!), his time playing basketball and football at K-State, and those mentors who have influenced his coaching style and philosophy over the years. If you're a Ted Lasso fan who's also had a great coach at any level, we think you'll really enjoy this episode. Plus, you may be surprised to find that Ted Lasso's accent sure sounds a whole lot like this rural Kansas boy's endearing drawl. And Coach still lives near KC, so of course we asked him about barbecue. So maybe don't listen to this episode too close to lunch time. You've been warned.Discussed On This EpisodeCoach Donnie's Twitter accountThe inspiration for Ted Lasso? This edition of the Life of Fitz podcast features host Tim Fitzgerald calling his new friend and former Kansas State University quarterback from the 1980s, Donnie Campbell. Some listeners may remember Campbell playing at K-State from 1980-84, but what has now made him well known is the fact that in the 1990s he coached a player named Jason Sudeikis, who went on to become a comedian, a cast member of Saturday Night Live, a star in movies and now the star of the Apple TV+ series, Ted Lasso. It's a brilliant show, but Sudeikis has now credited Campbell for being part of the inspiration for the Ted Lasso character, an American football coach who is hired to coach an English Premier League team despite knowing nothing about soccer. The character, and the show, is charming and funny. Since Sudeikis credited Campbell, he's now done many interviews and even appeared recently on NBC's The Today Show. A coach and teacher, Campbell started his career in the Shawnee Mission school district, moved to the Blue Valley School District, and now has moved across the state line in Kansas City to the Lee's Summit, Missouri, school district. *** Tim Fitzgerald is a sports journalist who writes, does TV, radio and is a long-time podcaster. He has served as publisher of GoPowercat.com, a website that focuses on Kansas State sports, for more than 20 years. Fitz also has stage 4 prostate cancer, so during the initial stages of the pandemic, his doctors have advised him to stay home and lay low. Now, Fitz is fully vaccinated and rejoining society, but his podcast lives on. Welcome to his life and the Life of Fitz podcast. A few weeks ago at the Golden Globes, Jason Sudeikis won the award for Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy for his performance as Ted Lasso, the American football coach who goes to England to coach professional soccer. It turns out that character is based, in part, on a real-life coach from Sudeikis’s past. The Athletic’s Rustin Dodd recently tracked down that coach, and Rustin joins us today to talk about how the relationship between him and Sudeikis helped inspire an iconic character all these years later. Read Rustin Dodd’s story about Jason Sudeikis, Donnie Campbell and Ted Lasso: https://theathletic.com/2430910/2021/03/15/ted-lasso-jason-sudeikis-coach-kansas/?source=theleadpodcast
On 2nd September 2020 Donnie Campbell completed his human-powered Munro Round in a record time of 31 days, 23 hours and 2 minutes. He completed all 282 Munros by running, biking and kayaking between them, starting on Ben More on Mull and finishing atop Ben Hope in the Far North. This improved on Stephen Pyke's 2010 record of 39 days, 9 hours and 6 minutes which itself knocked a significant chunk off the previous record before it. I talk to Donnie and Stephen (Spyke) about all things Munro Round on a Zoom call for the Fort William Mountain Festival. I found it really interesting to get into the scale of the challenge, logistics, and highs and lows with these two - who both clearly had incredibly memorable experiences on these journeys.
Donnie Campbell tells us the tales of his recent journey travelling between and summiting all the 282 Munro's of Scotland, in a new record of 31 days, 23hrs and 2min. What makes this even more Jedi like is that Donnie did this all under his own power, kayaking, running, hiking and cycling. Munro's are the mountains of Scotland that are over 3000ft in height and how Donnie managed to go nonstop over this terrain for over 31 days is what we get into in our conversation. #StokelyPodcast Links for Donnie CampbellWebsite: https://www.getactiverunning.com/about Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getactiverunning/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GetActiveRunnin Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/donnie_campbell84/ We acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional and rightful custodians of all the places where this podcast is created and listened to. Episode 75 is an interview with Donnie Campbell. Donnie, of Inverness Scotland, is an ex Royal Marine Commando with a background in a wide range of sports from Mountaineering and Kayaking to Football and Shinty. Shinty is unique to Scotland and one of the oldest games in the world. The game is similar to games such as hockey and lacrosse in some aspects and has historical roots with golf and ice hockey. As with lacrosse the game is a fast moving aerial game where physical fitness is tested to the limits. However, different from both hockey and lacrosse as in Shinty, feet can be used to stop the ball but not the hands (unless you are the goal-keeper). You can carry the ball on your caman (which is the stick used in the game) which can be also be swung above shoulder height.....a skilful eye and a sense of survival are paramount!! However, Donnie’s greatest passion now is running which he has gone on to excel in. Donnie has set an astonishing new Munros record to finish all 282 mountains over 3000ft (914.4m) in Scotland in 31 days, 23 hours and two minutes. Munros are all the mountains over 3000ft (914.4m). He ran and “power-hiked” a total of 1422km and cycled and kayaked in between. Can I ask you a favour; would you be able to go on over to Apple podcasts to rate, review and subscribe to the podcast? Doing this helps the podcast grow, which is greatly appreciated. How is your running going? Today's edition of The Aid Station takes a distinctly off-road route as we head to Paisley just outside of Glasgow, Scotland to meet John Kynaston, host of the Run to the Hills podcast. A wonderful story of a man with strong Christian roots whose journey includes working in Bangladesh and India during which time his four daughters, including twins, were born. John's return to the UK saw him work as a pastor and 10 years ago joining Glasgow City Council as an Active Schools Co-ordinator. Another example of the wonderful impact of sport and activity on the lives of kids with some of the stories of transformation during COVID-19. Watch the screen light up as John shares his passion for trail running which lead him to writing a blog and more recently taking over the Run to the Hills podcast. Listen to his insights into the impact of the Pandemic on the trail running calendar in the UK and an interesting case study on the often asked question of "to rest or not to rest in between races" When it comes to inspiration, hear the amazing story of Donnie Campbell who ran for 32 days to beat a 10 year old record of running up all of the 282 Munros (mountains over 3,000ft) by 7days. https://youtu.be/H__oQubRbZw Listen to my chat with John here https://youtu.be/UzmxzAqWooY #theaidstation
On weds 2nd September at around 5am, adventurer, ultra-runner and coach Donnie Campbell finished a record attempt that had taken him 31days and 23hrs to complete. He had summited all 282 Munros (Scottish mountains over 3000ft in height), completing the entire journey under his own power. He covered almost 900 miles on foot and the same on a bike whilst enduring enough ascent to climb Everest 14 times. In doing so, he beat the previous record by over a week! In this episode we chat about his epic journey from forming the idea, through planning the monster logistics, to tackling a serious contender for the most epic record of this summer of FKTs.
